House committee approves Iraq withdrawal plan.

“A Democratic plan to require the withdrawal of U.S. combat troops from Iraq passed its first test on Thursday as the House Appropriations Committee voted to endorse the proposal, overcoming Republican opposition. Members voted 37-27 along party lines to uphold a provision in a $124 billion war spending legislation that calls for troops to leave Iraq before September 2008, and possibly sooner if the Iraqi government does not meet certain benchmarks.”

UPDATE: Via The Gavel, Ranking Member Jerry Lewis (R-CA) offered an amendment that would have stripped language restricting the use of troops who are not properly equipped or trained. “The effort was defeated shortly after Appropriations Defense Subcommittee Chairman John Murtha spoke against it.” Watch Murtha’s speech, it’s powerful:

Fu*k September of 2008. Bring our troops home now. Stop the war profiteers. End this illegal occupation. Stop wasting taxpayers money.

    Ditto. Gotta start somewhere, right?

  6. Patrick Doesn't Have 1 says:

But…but…but…this will coddle our enemies and embolden the terrorists…why does the House Committee hate our troops?

  7. Operation Northwoods III says:

Ever since Ms. Pelosi decided not to put impeachment on the table, I abandoned the Democrats. I went down to the Town Hall and re-registered as an Independent. We need a 3rd political party in this country.

The current (for the most part, except Kucinich and Feingold) since the election have been nothing more than another Wing of the War Party.

To be direct : The Democrats are nothing but wusses. Of course, we NEVER should have gone into Afghanistan or Iraq.

    Again, F*ck September 2008!

  8. Jake says:

I hope the troops are out by Election Day 2008 as well. Setting that date for withdrawal, however, lets the terrorists know exactly how long they have to wait.

You are not an Independent or you would uphold the Constitution and call for George W Bush’s Impeachment for High Crimes and Misdemeanors.

You are a Bush bot, nothing more. Everything that is said about him you blame on Clinton. “Clinton did it too” is not an excuse for Bush to break the law. But you can’t see that.

You are NOT and Independent anymore than my right wing, Christian, Pro-Life, Republican mother and father. They make all of the same EXACT excuses you do for Bush. Everything is Clinton’s fault.

  12. dlet says:

September 2008?!?!? That’s giving them 3 Friedmans. No reason to do so.

    Comment by Jake

What do you think they did in Afghanistan to the Russians. They waited till the money forced them to withdraw. The same will be done to our forces. Either you set up deadlines for the Iraqis to make them do something or we sit there until our countries economy collapses. Hmm. They don’t have to do anything but wait. And again the question must be asked. Do you think that the Iraqis will allow their country to be ruled by al Queda?

You are no independant. Everything you post shows you are a Bush loving, and water carrying troll.
You do not give a damn about the troops.
You post lies and cannot back up any statements you make from a reputable source.

  20. midwestblue says:

Speaker Pelosi not only took impeachment off the table, she also gave her support to the provision that allows Bush to strike Iran without Congressional approval. And troops home by September 2008..my, my, isn’t that courageous. This is ridiculous. “Out by September 2008! Or until we run out of money! Or troops! Whichever comes first!”

  21. Jake says:

Yes, I thought proving party registration, given the nature of the Internet in general and this blog in particular, was patently impossible as well — I keep getting challenged to do so however — also, for shane specifically, I think the fact I was able to type this post “proves” that I have a working brain. For what that’s worth (even that wouldn’t have stopped you guys from killing Terry Schiavo).

Perhaps if you didn’t constantly defend every single act of this corrupt and criminal administration, while simultaneously trumpeting your alleged ‘Independent’ status, you might not get so many people doubting you.

    I FEEL BETRAYED.

I was so happy on November 7, 2006 that I lined up early to vote, hoping that was the catalyst needed to end the rule of the neo-con warmongers in Washington.

Now that the Dems have decided to cave in to the Israeli lobby and remove the “Iran Provision” from the Supplemental War Funding Bill I feel as if all that has happened is we substituted one set of idiot warmongers for another. Bushco can now attack Iran anytime it wants.

First it was troops by March 08, then August 08, now Sept. 08. Just enough time before the elections to make sure there is effective coverup of everthing that went on in Iraq with news about Brittany Spears.

How much more of our blood and tax dollars must be “wasted” before we the people realize what we have in Washington is not worth keeping; we must rise like our forefathers did in Boston and toss those bastards (Dem. and Repug and otherwise) into the Potomac and start all over again with that blessed peace of parchment called the Constitution of the United States of America.

Government of the People, for the People and by the People should never perish.

Heh. Party registration or affiliation doesn’t mean a damn thing. Today in TN it was announced that one of our state senators is leaving the Republican party to become an (I). But he says he will not caucus with the Dems.

Same for Joe LIEberman. He says he’s an Independent Democrat (whatever the hell that is) but he’s still a Bush as* licker.

    Comment by Jake — March 15, 2007 @ 2:42 pm

So what do we do, Jake? Stay forever? At what point do you suggest we declare “victory” and pull out a majority of our troops? Do we measure victory by the number of attacks our troops face each day? The number of deaths each month? When the estimate of the actual number of terrorists reaches a certain number?

So who’s attacking us there, Jake? The 7% of the opposition that consists of actual terrorists? The Iraqis who want us out of their country?

Why should the Iraqis get motivated to “stand up” and take over their own security if we keep letting them believe we’ll be there indefinitely?

Last year Bush himself said that we’d leave if the Iraqi government asked us to. Didn’t that embolden the terrorists as well? Wouldn’t that have made them lie low until we were gone? Oh, and the Iraqis did ask us to leave, yet were ignored by Bush.

Bush said we can’t win the war on terror the way a conventional war can be won. Didn’t that embolden the terrorists as well?

  34. Roger_Roger says:

    Let me repeat:

We can’t simply leave Iraq folks. We currently have remaining vital national security interests in Iraq. The United States security would be undermined if parts of iraq turned into a Failed state. Failed states turn into a test dish for insurgents and Al Qaeda. Afterall, this place is right in the heart of the oil region. It is also directly in opposition to the interests of Israel to leave Iraq. It is vital that we keep force levels, resources and operations level as it is an essential stabilizing element in Iraq.

  35. Rebel in CA says:

Roger_Rhetoric is posting this across multiple threads. He thinks it’s the absolute height of cleverness to rephrase Hillary Clinton’s screed as his own, and then laugh and point when we disagree with him.

What Roger_Rhetoric can’s seem to understand (no matter how many times he is told) is that very few of us embrace Hillary’s views. That doesn’t stop him, though…failure to understand has never been a serious impediment to Roger_Rhetoric’s rhetoric.

  37. ValiantVenusGrewFromUranus says:

Tripmaster, Hillary elaborated on her views – leaving Roger_Roger as the *confirmed* homophobic bigot.

Didn’t y’all read the articles that said the Pentagon plan was to wrap up the entire “war on terror” before October 2008?

  39. keith says:

    Re: #33, Roger Roger

What if China had vital interests in the part of the world that the USA occupies? Would that make it perfectly all right for China to invade and occupy the USA forever? Causing the deaths of 655,000 Americans and creating 2,000,000 refugees? Selling off our resources? Changing our government?

After all, everyone knows that we have vast stockpiles of WMD (unlike Iraq or Iran)—nuclear, chemical, and biological.

We have invaded other countries before. About 150—depending on the definition. We do have an unelected dictator.

Would it have been all right for China or Russia to do what we have done in Iraq?

  40. Stubain says:

I knew it would not take long before the nutty lib boogy man came into the picture… Haliburton… They were taxed right out of the country. Thank you nutty libs and unions for sending more American jobs overseas. One more thing… Screw peace – GIVE WAR A CHANCE!!

  41. Roger_Roger says:

#38 Oh you didnt get the memo. My post was actually just a repeat of what Hillary Clinton said in an interview. Her words not really mine. She is the one saying we need to keep at least 75,000 troops in Iraq to protect the Oil and look out for Isreals interests. Kinda weird huh? Really weird when you realize TP is her biggest supporter yet puts anti war posts up right next to those big “I love HIllary for 08′” posts.

  42. Stubain says:

    To Roger_Roger,

As Robert De Niro so eloquently put it, “you… you… you’re good, you.”

  43. keith says:

    Re: #40,

You seem to have the very false assumption that I agree with Hillary. You gave me the impression that you agree with the invasion, occupation, staying the course, surge, etc. If that is not true, then tell me what you do think. I ain’t psychic!

The question I gave you that you did not answer was: Would it have been all right for China or Russia to do what we have done in Iraq? Could they have done this invasion, occupation, government change, selling off of resources, fourteen permanent bases, rape, torture, embassy larger than Vatican City, etc., etc. all because Saddam was a bad guy and a threat and had wmd, etc., etc.?

  44. Roger_Roger says:

#42 This question largely depends. If we invaded because we were concerned they had WMD’s and it was for our safety and the safety of our allies, then of course the attack was correct. Currently, that is what the evidence shows. Now if your a man that likes to base his opinions on assumptions, then you can make up the most creative story in the world if you like.

Lastly, Hillary didn’t say we should invade Iraq for the Oil, she said we should stay there for it since we are already there. I would at least hope that she is simply looking out for the “world’s interest” in the Oil. The world will require that Oil shortly afterall unless we wake up and find an alternative. We can’t walk away from Oil now however. We can only do that once we have completely shifted away from it which will be another 30-50 years I’m afraid.

  45. keith says:

So, I’m guessing that you are saying it is only all right for us to invade and occupy Iraq forever, but not for China or Russia to do this.

Did you hear about the Downing Street Memo? The “liberal” media is afraid to mention it. It said that the policy of invasion was set in July 2002 and the evidence would be fixed around the policy later.

The “liberal” media is also afraid to mention that the Niger documents were known by Cheney’s office to be very poor forgeries at least eleven months before they went into the State of the Union Speech.

I have seen the documents that divided up Iraq’s oil fields among the oil corporations before 9//11/2001.

  46. keith says:

    Re: #43

No, currently the evidence shows that we knew there were no WMD in late 2002/early 2003. There were a large number of weapons experts there who could find nothing and ran out of places to look. We knew they were right and Curveball was wrong.

We did not do it for our safety, either. According to the 16 intelligence agencies of the USA, we have harmed our safety.
