Spitzer to skip St. Patrick’s parade over gay ban.

“New York Governor Eliot Spitzer (D) will not be marching in this weekend’ St. Patrick’s Day parade, making him the first governor in 12 years not to take part. Earlier this month, it was announced that openly gay New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn would refuse to march in the parade because of its policy against allowing gays and lesbians to march. Quinn decided she’ll march in Dublin, Ireland instead.”

    Good for you, Quinn.

  2. Zooey says:

Is Gov Spitzer’s decision not to march in the parade because he supports Quinn?

That’s because in Ireland they let gays march in their parade. It’s not until it crosses the pond does it get distorted into a discriminatory celebration that falls short of the inclusiveness that the Irish have.

  5. Eric Hundman says:

This is why Think Progress is losing credibility fast — there is absolutely no confirmed connection in that story between Spitzer’s decision and the continued exclusion of gay groups. The actual quote from Towleroad:

“Though a source in the governor’s office refused to say if Spitzer was declining a place in the line of march in support of the continued exclusion of Irish gay groups, it is believed that the governor took this issue into consideration when making his decision not to participate.”

Now, if Think Progress has more information to substantiate its claim, great. If not, posting unconfirmed speculation as fact is blatantly dishonest or, at best, extremely shoddy journalism.

Good for Spitzer. Isn’t it nice having adults back in charge of the House, Senate, and so many Governor’s mansions? And in January 2009 when Al Gore moves in we’ll have an adult in the White House as well.

#5. So can we expect now that TP has lost its credibility (in your myopic mind) that we will no longer have to put up with you and your drivel in the comments section?

“shoddy journalism”?? This is a blog, Eric.

Do you understand the difference between a blog and a news outlet?

Plus, the link is there for everyone to follow, read the original article, and make up their mind.

Eric, most of what these clowns post here is speculation!

  15. James of Galway, Ireland says:

It is misleading to assume the Ancient Order of Hibernians (the traditional patrons of this parade) is representitive of Ireland. It is a conservative, right-wing organisation and its members share the neurotic tendancy to project their own demons onto others. (How representative is the GOP of the US?) That said, the Irish establishment is similar but overall, the liberating influence of affluence, education and self-confidence has made most Irish people more accepting. (At the last count, for example, 66% backed same-sex civil unions.) The way to break free of this annual brouhaha is to recognise that the AOH is not representative of Ireland in spite of its pretensions to that claim and feel free to organise an alternative. It’s not an Irish event – it’s an AOH event.
