Just out from the AP:
The White House on Friday backed off its earlier contention that then-White House Counsel Harriet Miers first raised the idea of firing U.S. attorneys — an act that led to a firestorm of criticism of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.
“It has been described as her idea but … I don’t want to try to vouch for origination,” said White House press secretary Tony Snow, who previously had asserted Miers was the person who came up with the idea. “At this juncture, people have hazy memories.” [...]
Asked if Bush himself might have suggested the firings, Snow said, “Anything’s possible … but I don’t think so.” He said Bush “certainly has no recollection of any such thing. I can’t speak for the attorney general. I want you to be clear here: don’t be dropping it at the president’s door,” Snow said.
And as President of the United States he can fire anyone in the Executive Branch for any reason. That pesky Consitution again gets in the way of the moonbats wet dream.

So why not just come out and admit that he fired them?
Because nobody has done that mid-term before (nope, not Clinton, not Reagan, not even Poppy); and people will still want to know *why* they were fired, given that they had good performance reviews; and people will come to the conclusion that they were fired for political expediency; and people will have additional evidence that this administration does in fact value party and patronage over country.

March 16th, 2007 at 1:13 pmAt about the same time as this misadventure got underway Bush was on the stump talking about the political capital he earned with the 2004 election win and how that political capital would be spent.
With that in mind, Bush could very well be the mastermind behind this mess. In fact, as badly botched as it was suggests that Bush had to have a direct role. Nothing gets this badly botched without Bush getting involved.

March 16th, 2007 at 1:15 pmActually, no he can’t. He can nominate people, he can temporarily appoint them when the Senate is in recess, but in actual fact there is nothing in the constitution which gives him the power to fire anybody over anything.
As such, the next step down is civil and criminal law – which if it is anything like South African law would make for an interesting case should any of those he has fired bring forward a suit for unfair dismissal.
March 16th, 2007 at 1:15 pmWhoops….my previous post was in response to patrick1’s vapid question: “Impeach for what?”
March 16th, 2007 at 1:16 pmIts obvious that the more response given to the trolls (and I’m guilty of it) the more their little under appreciated egos feel appreciated and the more bile and false statements they spew. Why not everyone (myself included) make a commitment to not answer their taunts and misinformation? We aren’t going to educate them no matter how hard we try because they are uneducable. There is an old saying that goes “Its better to be wanted for murder than not wanted at all.” Perhaps if we stop troll responding they will realize they are unwanted and find a nearby freeway overpass to curl up under.

March 16th, 2007 at 1:26 pmSaying “Anything’s possible … but I don’t think so” is a long, long, long way from “no” in Washington. It’s basically saying “probably, but they’re not telling me, and hopefully you won’t be able to prove it.”
March 16th, 2007 at 1:27 pmHey, Trolls!
March 16th, 2007 at 1:28 pmThe impeachment issue won’t be if they could be fired; it’ll be why they were fired. And we still don’t know what they successfully got other federal prosecutors to agree to! Pass the popcorn!

Then why not come clean, and give exact details as to the step that led to, according to you, perfectly legal and ethical dismissal of US Attorneys that he himself had appointed a few years previous?
Aren’t you curious what the administration’s reasoning was for firing eight Bush-appointed attorneys that had already received good performance reviews? Aren’t you just the LEAST bit curious what those eight were working on?
Perhaps they were able to put their partisan views aside and were investigating Republican misconduct?
March 16th, 2007 at 1:31 pmOf course Patrick-the-intellectual-coward is dodging the thread about Gonzales lying on the record. Earlier today he had to flee the Walter Reed thread after being confronted by some facts that made him uncomfortable.
So Patrick, someone here posed the question: if everything has been legal and constitutional, why are you and the Bush team so scared right now? You are fighting like cornered animals, but over what? Testifying under oath? That’s all it takes to scare the crap out of your Leaders?

March 16th, 2007 at 1:57 pmEarlier Patrick or one of the other lower life forms stated emphatically that as “chief executive” Bush has the authority to fire “anyone” in the executive branch.
Wrong.
The executive branch includes every agency of the Federal government – what Patrick and the others complain about as the “bureaucracy.” Every civilian employee of the executive branch is covered by a multitude of federal personnel laws that protect us (I am a federal employee) against madmen like Bush firing us for less than good cause. Bush can fire any of the Schedule C folks because they are political appointees. As has been repeated so often in the lies trying to cover up the US Attorney purging, those political appointees “serve at the president’s pleasure” (and I wish one of them would pleasure the president so we could impeach the bastard).
Bush cannot reach down into the ranks of GS-15s and lower civilian employees and fire us. We can be transferred to a oil storage tank field in Newark or to the Barrow Alaska Country Club for screwing up. But the “president” cannot fire me or any other civilian employee.
Check the facts Patrick.
March 16th, 2007 at 1:58 pmWhy the endless desire to communicate with pat ? Right wing view points well backed up have a place here and propel the discussion . Nonsense not backed up and obscenities only help the opposition and are disempowering .
March 16th, 2007 at 2:01 pmDamn I never thought I’d miss jason Hendler or Seixon but they atleast civilly and eloquently presented a counterpoint to my opinions .
Jake and roger aren’t doing too bad but many of the obscenities and name calling used by supposed left wing bloggers toward them and others who have remained civil in their responses have made the left look bad .
TP should ban the obscenities , foul language, and outright rude behavior which has so prevalent here of late.
Don’t underestimate the power of your blogging ,it serves as a heads up for the establishment and I believe led to a fair election, more or less ,in the face of electronic voting !
I believe that most appointees in the current Administration and most other Administrations in recent history serve and served “at the will of the President” not because of any Constitutional right of the President to fire them but because they were all forced (extortion, coercion) to sign undated letters of resignation. There are also laws covering the unjust termination of an employee of which removal for political reasons is probably high on the list. All this aside, however, the primary malfeasance in this case is the involvement of lower level political hacks and the key to the issue as Tricky Dick found out: “It’s the cover-up Stupid.” Lying under oath, conspiracy, obstruction of justice are all impeachment offenses. Had King George the Dumb just said to the Attorneys “I accept your resignation” there is not a thing that could been done except the usual screaming, shouting and gnashing of teeth. However, KGtD lives up to his crown and will go down to Leavenworth.
March 16th, 2007 at 2:02 pmNo one has mentioned the use of the Patriot Act to get these attorneys appointed. What kind of fool does Tony Snow take the American people to be? The lesson from the CIA leak case it that it works to throw up a fall guy, in this case Harriet Miers. But thanks to Josh Marshall and others it hasn’t worked this time.
My hazy memory says at the time the details on this operation got started Bush was on the stump talking about how he earned political capital from the 2004 election and that he would be spending some of that capital soon. Now we know what he was talking about when he made that declaration.
