Gonzales apologizes.

Gonzales apologizes.

“Attorney General Alberto Gonzales apologized to the nation’s 93 U.S. attorneys in a conference call Friday as he tried to hold on to his job amid the scandal over the firings of eight federal prosecutors. … Across the country, morale within U.S. attorneys’ offices deteriorated, leaving many feeling misled by the Bush administration. ‘They feel a strong sense of betrayal,’ said a former Bush administration Justice Department official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to protect his friends in the administration.”

UPDATE: “Two New Mexico lawyers with strong ties to the state Republican Party met last summer with a top aide to U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and complained about then-U.S. Attorney David Iglesias,” the AP reports. One of the lawyers, Pat Rogers, “has represented the New Mexico GOP in legal matters for several years,” and “was among the names that Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M., submitted to President Bush for consideration as Iglesias’ successor.”

Just think about the bad precedents your side is going to shoot itself in the feet with when (if) a Democrat gets into the Oval Office. IF Gonzales / Bush have to resign / get impeached over this, can ANY U.S. Attorney can EVER be fired again?

  2. whiteyfresh says:

    put in Fitzgerald as AG!!

  3. ForTruth says:

So THIS is the solution? Heh. Yeah right.

  4. Raven says:

    Not good enough, Alberto.
    Resign now.
You made a statement a couple of weeks ago that you were “to busy” to respond to Congressional subpeona’s and requests for information.
We know now what that business was.

Have you made it past the Junior year in High School? If so, then why do you present such lame arguments?

    1. U.S. Attorneys are usually replaced with any incoming administration.
    2. U.S. Attorneys can always be fired for cause, i.e. bribery, corruption, committing serious crimes.

But do you sincerely support the position that U.S. Attorneys should be selected not for their adherance to the Constitution but for their Party Loyalty? Do you long for a country more like Communist Russia, Nazi Germany, or Orwell’s “1984″?

  6. katy says:

    …Gonzales apologized to the nation’s 93 U.S. attorneys…

but he needs to apologize to ME, to US, to the citizens whose CONSTITUTION he is trying to thwart and miscontrue…

  7. Briseadh na Faire says:

Did the conference call include the 8, 9 or so Party Loyalists who got their jobs as a result of the Purge?

Do you realize that Bush is now the “Purge and Surge” President?

  8. Jake says:

    Briseadh na Faire:

Yes, it’s not “lame” since the next firing by a Democrat (regardless of cause) will be attacked with a vengence, no, and no (not necessarily in that order).

  9. ForTruth says:

If Gonzo apologizes, that means he is tacitly admitting to wrongdoing. Lets get that one nailed down first.

  10. R says:

SURE he’s sorry, now. He should have been straight with the people all along, and it wouldn’t have gotten to this point. I feel nothing but disgust and revulsion for Gonzo and his lack of ethic.

  11. Jake says:

    ForTruth:

I’m “sorry” you feel that way.

  12. Raven says:

well, you are certainly ’sorry’ sounding, jake…

Yes jake, they can be fired for a number of reasons. The just can’t be fired to cover up criminal behavior, or to make room for incompetent cronies. Is that what you repbubs are so worried about, no more coruption and cronieism? It would destroy your way of life!

Good thing Carter and Clinton weren’t held to that same standard.

Don’t apoligize for ANYTHING. Did Clinton apologize? No, he just FIRED EVERY US attorney.

    Chew on that libs.

  19. whiteyfresh says:

isn’t it funny(no offense to you, jake)that it seems like more and more Republicans are suddenly Libertarian(sp?) or Independents nowadays??

I don’t believe you, Jake. You are a card-carrying Republican.

  23. Jules says:

Jake you are so full of s*it I bet your hair is even brown. You are by far the most ignorant troll I have read on these threads. That is really sad because I am including firehead and partick1 in that bunch. They are just delusional and therefore can be stabilized if they will stay on their meds. You are a liar and therefore must be a republican hack.

  24. RUCerious says:

Jules, that’s so right there. Last night someone mentioned that they are now going to have to take a Jake, if you catch my drift.

  28. TripMaster Monkey says:

An apology isn’t going to do it, Gonzo.

    Neither will a resignation.

You’ve committed crimes, and you will be held accountable.

  29. Zooey says:

Sorry Gonzo, saying you’re sowwy isn’t going to cut it. Hold on to that job as long as you can, ya hear?

  30. Bluedahlia says:

What are apologies but empty words? Unless he fixes his mistakes and ensures the same “mistakes” are not done again, this apology is worthless. Do those 8 or 9 fired attorneys get their jobs back? Is that how sorry he is? Yeah, that’s what I thought……

  34. veritas says:

Bush’s unflagging support of Gonzales is either indicative of his ongoing level of incorrigibility to yield to the wishes of the majority of americans OR – OR – OR – what would you do, assuming that you knew that “De-Nile” was not just a River in Egypt and did not indulge is such flights of fantasy – would you not “hand pick” your own “straw which breaks the camel’s back”, if you possibly could??

Understandably, W may be selecting the purging of US attorneys as the least toxic scandal which will beset his administration – since there is obviously an entire mountain of corruption yet to be uncovered. I suspect that his “lone ranger” support of Gonzales has either to do with the goods which Gonzo has on him and may “sing” about dating back to W’s governor days and/or a flagrant in-your-face rejection of the wishes of congress, his own party, and the american people which will net him even more flagging poll numbers and a call for his ouster.

The dots are being connected in terms of just how desperate these neocons were to bring about a coup of this democracy and an “oil grab” in the middle east. Some of them are not very pretty dots, indeed. But they are being connected and will continue to be connected by the people and the new awarenesses and revelations, along with outright whistleblowing by people forced to engage in illegal activities at the behest of their superiors will be astounding in the months to come.

I view this as W’s “easy way out” – as this scandal will be the least of the forthcoming scandals he has to worry about being outed.

  35. veritas says:

Gonzales’s apology is meaningless, insignificant, and fool’s blather. He’s inept and we know it; he’s unqualified to do the job and we know it (as does the administration) which is precisely WHY he was placed in the position of being a “gopher” for BushCo.

  36. AboveTheClouds says:

“registered Independent” is GOP code for “I voted for and support the Bush Administration but I am too much of a chickenshit to admit my mistake.” Remember, Joe Lieberman is also a “registered Independent.”

  37. veritas says:

#33 Don’t even try to show him a job description because he probably never learned to read (remember his testimonies “er….er…I haven’t read that report”….

As well, if he can read, he wouldn’t care to because then he might “have a clue” as to what he should be doing which will never happen.

This guy was clueless during his confirmation hearings and a total embarassment to the american people……but what can one expect when “you can’t polish a turd”.

What do you mean by “your side”? Your anger is making you insensitive to subtle but important distinctions.

Unless you cede that “our” side now includes most moderate republicans? (shrug)

Either way, it sounds like our side is sounding more and more like AMERICA’S side. That’s what I call progress! ;)

  40. AboveTheClouds says:

It appears through statements issued by Sampson’s lawyer, Bradford Berenson, that Sampson does not agree with the evolving and fluid Gonzales/White House rationale for dismissing the US Attys and won’t be painted as the “Scooter Libby” of this scandal. He’ll have a chance to get his side of the story out–it will be interesting to see if Gonzales or Rove have the guts to share their side. How about that? Is being a “Scooter Libby” fitting of traitors and liars who take the hit for the neocons; or is a “Scooter” one who refuses to fall on their sword for the neocons? All these GOP scandals have me confused.

  41. Bluedog49 says:

Jake, you sit there every day and use all manner of sleazy distortion and obfuscation to protect and defend Bush. You repeat republican talking points with reckless abandon, even when they make no sense. You’ve all but admitted that politics and republican power are more important to you than fighting terrorism. And, on top of that, you proudly call yourself an “independent.” What a cowardly weasel you are. You vote for republicans, you defend republican positions, you talk like a republican, you obviously get your talking points straight from repub central. Step up to the plate, weasel. Take your swings. But don’t insult everyone’s intelligence by trying to act like your just a principled independent. It’s just pathetic and shows how little faith you have in your own absurd arguments.

  42. AboveTheClouds says:

Well said, Bluedog49. The trolls know they are tasked with defending the undefensible and when “your side” gives you lies and a sliding scale of morality to try to justify, their argument goes limp and fizzles out under the scrutinty of facts and the truth. When you have the truth and facts you don’t need to change your story.

  43. hypatia's father says:

Jake is one of a growing number of republicans who are now indignantly calling themselves “independent.” It’s fascinating.

I’ve not interacted enough w/ Jake to say in his case, but it seems like most of these erstwhile republicans are now “independent” to the exact same degree as FOX News is “fair and balanced”.

My prediction is that when (or if) the republican party finally can crawl out from under it’s currently tainted reputation, all of those independents will decompensate back to their old card-carrying GOP identities.

  44. JPV says:

Hey, I have an idea Speedy.

If you are really sorry, perhaps you and Bush can give all those Attorneys their jobs back, so that they can complete all those investigations that they never got to finish.

    That would work for me.

What bad precedent? I don’t want dishonest and criminal Democrats in office any more than I want dishonest and criminal Republicans in office.

There should be higher standards for all of them.

Good Post’s all, well most all…..The apolegy by gonzo and “I take full responsability”, although I didn’t know about it garbage is just that..Garbage..

The guilty do this kind of crap all the time, they cry because they got caught, period…All this remind’s me of the dreadful green river killer, here in Wash. state awhile back…This sniveling piece of shit was crying and trying to cut a deal to stay alive after killing 46 women…I do not support the death penelty BTW. My point being they cry and want more right’s than they gave their victom’s when they are caught…I don’t support plea agreement’s either, I think all the fact’s and charges shoulld be known and then the guilty should rot in jail forever..

Clearly treason against our country has been done by many in this administration….Apparent that war crime’s and crimes against humanety have been commited by the same administration..We have to clean up our own house…Blessings

I see our new troll Jake is hell-bent on repeating this talking point.

The firing of eight federal attorneys by a president -his own appointees and half-way through his second term- is unprecedented. This is a fact that will not change, regardless of how often the Bush cultists deny it.

  49. bob (not the hacker) says:

a late response to jake the republican:

You spent 80 million dollars and ten years sniffing through Clinton’s life and all you came up with is a lie about martial infidelity. you were all worried about “rule of law” back then sleaseball.

What exactly are you accusing carter of? You are republican scum.

  50. TripMaster Monkey says:

Especially amusing, bob, considering that the amount spent on investigating 9/11, the worst terrorist attack ever on U.S.soil, was a paltry $600,000.

It’s pretty clear where the Repug’s priorities lie.

    Comment by firehead

Fried Brains, we all know already that Clinton fired every US attorney at the outset of his administration, just as Dumbya did. This is no stranger than a new president installing a completely new cabinet. What has been pointed out several times on this blog and elsewhere but still doesn’t sink into your thick but weak head is that Bush Jr. alone has fired eight US attorneys midway into his term under dubious circumstances. Your attempt to spin or ignore the details that make up the truth gives us nothing to chew on.
