Yesterday on CBS’s Face the Nation, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said he would not ask Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Peter Pace to apologize for calling homosexuality “immoral” and comparing it to adultery,” saying “we should just move on from this point.”
Host Bob Schieffer asked Gates, “You don’t plan to ask General Pace to do anything more than he’s already done?” Gates responded, “No,” and praised Pace as “one of the finest people I’ve ever worked with” and “a man of enormous principle and integrity.”
Gates later refused to comment on whether he believes Pace’s comment was “a slur on members of the armed forces,” and said that he was too busy to have an opinion on whether Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is an effective policy. “I’ve got quite a lot on my plate,” he said.
Watch it:
Gates may not believe that Pace’s remark was a slur, but others do, including retired Marine Staff Sgt. Eric Alva, a gay man and the first American soldier to be seriously wounded in Iraq. Alva said in a statement about Pace:
Judging gay men and women in the military for factors unrelated to their fitness to serve undermines our military’s effectiveness. Certain leaders’ bigotry should not be a rational basis for discrimination. This kind of prejudice is going to continue to have a direct impact on our national security as we allow qualified gay men and women to lose their jobs for no good reason. This policy — and General Pace’s bigotry — is outdated, unnecessary and counter to the same American values our soldiers are giving their lives for each and every day.
Transcript:
SCHIEFFER: Another tough situation that you’re facing in your job early on is the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, General Pace, said recently that he considered homosexual acts immoral. He later said, well, he shouldn’t have said that, but he didn’t apologize. And a lot of gay people are saying that that is a slur on thousands of people who are serving in the military right now.
I would like to ask you first, do you agree with General Pace, and should more be done on this front?
GATES: Well, as I said the other day, I think that this is an issue on which personal opinion really doesn’t have a place. We have a don’t ask, don’t tell policy that is a law. It’s inscribed in statute. My responsibility is to implement the provisions of the statute.
SCHIEFFER: And you think it’s OK as it is? You don’t plan to ask General Pace to do anything more than he’s already done?
GATES: No. I think General Pace has made pretty clear that he wished he had avoided his personal opinion.
Let me say, you know, Pete Pace is one of the finest people I’ve ever worked with. He’s a man of enormous principle and integrity and a tremendous — and of tremendous skill. I think the American people are lucky to have him as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
SCHIEFFER: But what I guess the question I asked was, do you consider that a slur on members of the armed forces, what he said?
GATES: I think I’ll leave it at the fact that I don’t think this is an issue where personal opinion has any place.
SCHIEFFER: And you don’t think he should apologize?
GATES: I think we should just move on from this point.
SCHIEFFER: And should the don’t ask, don’t tell policy — are you satisfied with that or should that policy be reviewed?
GATES: Look, I’ve got a war in Iraq, a war in Afghanistan, challenges in Iran and North Korea and elsewhere, global war on terror, three budget bills totaling $715 billion. I think I’ve got quite a lot on my plate.
Who would expect Gates to demand an apoligy from Pace for a comment supporting current military law/policy? It would be like asking Pelosi to apoligize for saying she agrees that Robbery is wrong.
March 19th, 2007 at 3:13 pmYou’d think this current cabal would want to put homosexuals out on the front lines and hope they were only ones to get hit.
George Will said on “This Week” something to the degree that the righties better catch up on this issue because the younger generations look at homosexuality in the same way that people look at whether your left or right handed. It just doesn’t matter.

Bush Miscalculates on Gay Republicans
Jonathan Rauch, The New York Times
April 17, 2000
So, George W. Bush finally held a meeting with a dozen openly gay Republicans. Afterward, he announced that while his mind had not been changed on the issues, he was a “better person” for listening.
Glad to hear it. But the more interesting question is: Did the meeting make him a better candidate? A better potential president?
Yes, a little. Meeting with gays is certainly better than not meeting with them. And it is better if the Republican Party treats homosexuals as respectable citizens instead of pariahs.
But the meeting was also part of a larger pattern that Governor Bush set early on during the primaries, a pattern that is less heartening. His every move seems based on political calculation rather than personal belief.
From the very beginning, his often maladroit maneuvering on gay issues has looked more like triangulation than principle. Before the early primaries he forswore meeting with a gay Republican group; then, just before California, he said he would reconsider.
He had first said a year ago that he would be willing to appoint openly gay officials, then seemed to backtrack in a talk with conservatives. Last week, he said that sexual orientation “is not a factor” in naming someone to a job. He opposes adoption rights, anti-discrimination protections and hate-crimes laws for homosexuals, while also trying to sound less harsh than his similarly positioned competitors to the right.
In short, he has chosen his path with a mincing delicacy that suggests fear of being wrongfooted politically. “Gotta play this right,” he seems to be saying. The carefully choreographed meeting with homosexuals seemed just another move in the game.

March 19th, 2007 at 3:18 pmoooooooo… the poor man has a lot on his plate… he’s got time to go on face the nation, but when his direct report, the joint chiefs chairman, takes a stand against basic human dignity, he has nothing to say… after all, HE has a WAR in IRAQ and AFGHANISTAN and CHALLENGES in IRAN and NORTH KOREA… he has no time for trivial matters… true colors, mr. gates, true colors…
And, yes, I DO take it personally
March 19th, 2007 at 3:19 pmOnce Again, Roger the Repuke shows what a complete idiot he is.
Pace did not state DOD policy, he stated his own personal view.
When you’re in uniform, whether you have one chevron or four stars, you are not allowed to state personal political opinions. That’s because when you’re in uniform, you’re representing the US. Any military person or any civilian with general knowledge of the military knows this.
Pace quickly backtracked when he realized he stepped in it.
Roger, go back to your trailer and bang your sister.
March 19th, 2007 at 3:19 pmLOL!! Way back in 2000, Rauch characterized Chimpy as having “mincing delicacy” LOL!!
I guess Rauch knew even back then that Chimpy is a homo.

March 19th, 2007 at 3:23 pmwow, you Liberals hate freedom of speech don’t you.
It is this Generals right to say what he said. Why do you Liberals always try to do professional harm to those individuals that speak their personal feelings on morality.
can anyone explain to me how it is not General Pace’s right to say that he believes homosexuality is immoral….
why do you liberals hate freedom of speech? actually, you guys only hate it when someone use it to speak against you guys.
March 19th, 2007 at 3:24 pmDo the trolls get bonuses if they’re the first ones to post on a thread here? They really seem to monitor this site and refresh constantly. Almost as if they were getting paid by the RNC to do it…

March 19th, 2007 at 3:28 pmHomosexuality is offensive and should not be permitted by society. I agree with:
Genesis 19
Leviticus 18.22
Leviticus 20.13
Judges 19.22-26
Romans 1.26-27, 32
Corinthians 6.9-10 &
St. Jude 1.7
I also agree that their death should be swift!
March 19th, 2007 at 3:28 pmDo the trolls get bonuses if they’re the first ones to post on a thread here?
No.
March 19th, 2007 at 3:28 pmhowsad, see my explanation to Roger.
You’re another dumbass Repuke who doesn’t have even a basic understanding of military regulations.
You’re not allowed to make political statements when you’re in uniform.
As for hating freedom of speech, it is you Repukes who have been curtailing free speech since 9-11. That is well documented.
Go back to your trailer and screw your sister, howsad.
March 19th, 2007 at 3:29 pm#7 I was in the military (11B out of Fort Lewis) so I understand this. The issue at hand however is that his personal view fits perfectly with military policy and law so he wasn’t out of line. If he spoke out against “don’t Ask, Don’t tell” however he would be out of line and could be in some trouble. Now I personally believe the military should allow openly homosexual people in our ranks, but that isn’t the issue. We are talking about a man voicing his personal view that he agrees with the military’s rules. It is childish to say he did something wrong. How could anyone interpret this as wrong to simply say that in his personal view, military rules are something he agrees with?
Go change the rule, then what he said would be wrong.
March 19th, 2007 at 3:29 pmI believe that gay-bashers like Ben are an affront to God.
They should be put to death immediately.
How do you like them apples, Ben?
March 19th, 2007 at 3:31 pm“Gates: Pace Doesn’t Need to Apologize for Anti-Gay Remark”
Of course he doesn’t need to apologize. He is entitaled to his opinion. He does not have to agree with gay behaviours - the ONLY thing he owes all people is to treat them civilly.
**Note: To Gay Activists - I don’t care, what you do - or which adults you do it with - it’s NONE of my business! PLEASE quit making your personal life MY BUSINESS -
March 19th, 2007 at 3:34 pmThe US Constitution guarantees us that Pace is free to express his opinion on any question asked unless the response contains ’secret information’ He is in the opinion that engaging in the filthy disgusting behavior of gay butt sex is not only a sin but in fact an abomination and a precursor to extinction.
March 19th, 2007 at 3:35 pmRoger, you’re STILL an idiot.
When Pace says homosexuality is immoral, that’s not “in line with military policy”. Military policy on gays does NOT mention morality at all. It talks about unit cohesiveness and morale and other military stuff.
What Pace said was a highly controversial political statement. That is against military law.
Roger is an obvious example of what happens when siblings procreate.
March 19th, 2007 at 3:36 pmI see Valiant Uranus is joining the chorus of gay-bashing morons.
See my posts above. I am correct and you Repukes are all wrong.
Pace knew he made a mistake and he backtracked. That is all the proof you need.
Stupid Repukes. It is amazing you can tie your shoes in the morning.
March 19th, 2007 at 3:38 pmAhhh well that would be murder should you kill me.
Leviticus 20.13
“If any one lie with a man as with a woman, both have committed an abomination: let them be put to death. Their blood be upon them.”
In that case I pray their death is swift. Here I don’t want to see them tortured or caused to suffer in any way!
March 19th, 2007 at 3:38 pm19 Ben, Killing innocent people in a War is a sin too! How come you aren’t complaining about that?
March 19th, 2007 at 3:40 pmwow… pace said all that?
can you say “transferance”?
and aphro thinks it’s all the gays fault that they have to defend their civil rights… huh…
March 19th, 2007 at 3:40 pmBen, you’re selectively quoting Leviticus. It also prescribes the death penalty for a LOT of things. Including eating shrimp or a cheeseburger.
Mosaic law is very similar to Sharia law, they are both brutal and outdated.
It is intellectually dishonest to selectively quote the Bible to push your gay-bashing agenda. But then you Repukes are generally dishonest, anyway.
March 19th, 2007 at 3:40 pmI wouldn’t expect Pace to apologize for stating his honest opinion. What I do expect is that Pace’s personal opinion about homosexuality would be irrelevant regarding public policy. The military is under civilian control, and the general is subject to that control, whether he agrees or disagrees with the laws passed by civilians. His personal opinion should be inconsequential.
March 19th, 2007 at 3:40 pmSimple question for all those that are upset that Pace voiced his personal opinion.
Would you be just as outraged if Pace had said “In my opinion, DADT should be lifted and gays should be allowed to serve openly”?
I doubt any of you will answer this question…
March 19th, 2007 at 3:40 pmOnly fundies get their panties in a bunch about all of this.
Being Gay Is Just as Healthy as Being Straight: Evelyn Hooker’s pioneering research debunked the popular myth that homosexuals are inherently less mentally healthy than heterosexuals, leading to significant changes in how psychology views and treats people who are gay. Continued here…
March 19th, 2007 at 3:41 pmNote to Tom3 - Why do gay people feel this overwhelming need for a “Stamp of Approval”?? Why should you care what I think about your sex life? (FYI - I don’t care what YOU think on the topic of sexual preferences…) TMI!
March 19th, 2007 at 3:43 pm#20 Your right, morality is not a covered topic when it comes to homosexual acts in the military which is exactly why he is free to speak his mind on this subject since it does not speak against or for a current military policy. Furthermore, the forum from which he spoke his mind meant he was free. Lastly, free speech rights are supposed to be the realm of the Dems right? I would think that the repugs would be the folks demanding someone keep their mouth shut. I thought the Dems were the party for free speech even when that speech is against the majority view, the legal view, etc.? Is free speech only ok if you agree now? I don’t agree with Pace and yet think it was perfectly ok and within his rights to say.

It is weird how these Repukes just don’t get it. This is a simple cut-and-dried matter of military regulations.
Pace understood it. That is why he backed off his original statement right away. He knew he had stepped in it.
And Ben, well he is a nut case. He supports murdering 10% of the US population because he doesn’t like their sex life. What a psycho.

This message board just proves one thing - that Chimpy has succeeded in dividing our society to the point where I feel like we are on the brink of civil war. Hell, we already call it “culture wars”.
This was not a huge issue dividing the country until Chimpy made it one, and he bashed gays just to get re-elected.
Chimpy really does have a mincing delicacy about him. That’s because he is a closet case, like all of his cronies. They all get Jeffy Lubed at Bohemian Grove every year.

I can’t honestly say I’d be outraged, but I can say that if Pace only said your hypothetical quote that I would not see that as sufficent. If Pace is going to comment at all, his comments should be based on the direct impact on the military’s performance, both from the individual and from the group perspective. His purely personal opinion on military matters is not appropriate given his position.
March 19th, 2007 at 3:55 pmWhy would I be outraged about that?

March 19th, 2007 at 3:59 pmCherry picking the Bible. Bad fundy! Shame on you!
Assuming there is a God - why would he care about such things? People make him sound more perverted than pious. If they’re going to talk sin - straights are not exactly free from it. Something about logs and eyes comes to mind here. Why on earth would God find the sight of two people showing love for each other unacceptable? Ok so they’re not married, but that’s not their fault is it?
I can only imagine what all this might look like to God. He’s probably LHHAO at all the petty silliness and unbridled arrogance. On the other hand, if Proverbs 6:16-19 is any indication - he will not be very pleased at all. Silly Christians, did they somehow forget that God hates things like lying and hypocrisy? According to the laws written in the Bible, those are very, very serious violations. How will the Party of Moral Values explain that one to God? I don’t think “accidentally on purpose” is a very good defense in the eyes of the Lord. However, I’m not religious so you might want to check with someone who is.

March 19th, 2007 at 4:01 pmTom3 & goose1,
March 19th, 2007 at 4:01 pmHere is food for thought. Men have sex with women to make children if needed because it feels good. Homosexuality is offensive on several levels. Those engaging in it constantly attempt to reverse the facts. I do not eat shell fish since those creatures are made to clean waste from the water. I do not have sex with my wife when she is having her period. I do not eat pork, etc. Sodomy is not sex nor is it permitted in my religion. Males have their place in the chain of life as do women. So, while it sounds harsh war is acceptable in the bible and also to me. In the real world these faggots will get fragged during action or rendered into a paste.

Surely the difference is that none of us are calling Pace immoral. How about this - the Christian faith is immoral as it encourages the suppression of womens rights and is a divisive element in civil society. This faith has led good people to murder innocents for no other reason than their religious belief. Hence it is immoral.
Is that OK for me to say? Of course it isn’t. Pace must learn to grow up and move into a world of balance and acceptance of other people’s world view.
March 19th, 2007 at 4:18 pm[Gates later refused to comment on whether he believes Pace’s comment was “a slur on members of the armed forces,â€]
Gates equated the ’slur’ comment as relating to the don’t ask, don’t tell policy. The only thing I can be sure of is that the comment has no bearing on the policy. It is unclear without greater context whether the question concerning a homosexual orientation or soldiers that sleep with other soldiers wives. That was the two parts to the Pace comment. And, as far as I can see, both parts are a slur on the armed forces.

Tell you what - let’s consider having a cicil Civil War. All liberals wishing to live in Blue State Nirvana can move to Blue States and Red Staters can do the same. You can have as many entitlement programs and taxes as you wish!! You can let gay people get married, provide universal health care and legalize drugs! You can abolish a military and spend the Peace Dividend!! (Not having anything to protest….we’ll allow you to picket our border as long as you stay on your side.)
Red Staters can make their laws and we will be polite but estranged neighbours…

March 19th, 2007 at 4:28 pmThere are several related topic here:
1) Gates: thinks Pace should not have mentioned his personal opinion but sees it for what it is and that happens to be Pace’s opinion and true in every and all ways. Gates sees no need for an apology since stating that you think faggots are immoral since they engage in consensual butt sex is not a crime or wrong or not true for Pace.
2) Pace: Pace in summery said that faggots go against his moral upbringing. Those that want to talk about the morality of war in relation to the exclusion of faggots have a problem. You say war is immoral but faggotry is not yet those same faggots will go to war and kill.
3) Religion: No religion condones faggotry.
4) Majority: Most people when asked about their views about faggots disapprove of it.
5) Defining a New Low: Should the population allow slim minorities to cross the line of acceptability then society will cease to function and we will wind up in anarchy.
6) Extinction: If we all became faggots within a short time all humanity will go extinct.

Comment by hacker bob
It doesn’t outrage me, except that whoever wrote it was deprived of an education. Because it’s historically and anthropologically WRONG.
As usual, people cherry-picking the Bible manage to miss all the references to polygyny. If God was so crazy about David, why didn’t he smack him around for having eight wives?
You can make essentially the same argument, historically, morally and religiously, for the practice of slavery. It’s condoned in the Bible and it has been the historical norm throughout recorded history. Fortunately, human culture does evolve.

Perhaps you, not wanting to be called (gasp!) “judgemental” are incapable of making moral judgements. That’s your choice and your problem.
“Why do you make a person’s sexual life a basis for public policy?”If I don’t know about a person’s sex life why would it be a basis of policy. (Are you starting to see a pattern - If I don’t know - why do you NEED to tell me?

March 19th, 2007 at 6:15 pmBut who really care ignoramus. Just go thump your bible little man.

No idea of how old you are and what your music tastes are but I know for a fact that the music collective is was involved with in the 90’s will be going to straight to hell. It was called “Stay up forever” and played nothing but the most intense acid techno. Hey, we even used to run a post club morning called Heresy. It ran until the police busted us.
Good times…
March 19th, 2007 at 6:18 pm#134 - Do you pray with that mouth?
“But in vain do they worship me, teaching as their doctrines the precepts of men. And he called to him the multitude, and said unto them, hear, and understand: Not that which entereth into the mouth defileth the man; but that which proceedeth out of the mouth, this defileth the man.” -Matthew 15:9-11
You know, you seem bored. Why don’t you go here and play.
March 19th, 2007 at 6:23 pmAt least in Hell we’re going to get the best music. What’s heaven going to have? Cliff Richard?

March 19th, 2007 at 6:43 pmLook Zooey – Blasphemous Paper Dolls for you to play with and enjoy!! How about making a Muslim version - and have all kinds of “laughs” when they burn buildings and threaten to kill people!
But you are too precious….YOU pick a lousy husband, have a couple of kids and blame him for being a schmuck - well, I guess that makes sense to some people.
March 19th, 2007 at 6:46 pmI could care less who you leave your real and personal property to your, who you appoint as guardian of your children, or who you give power of attorney.

…I DON’T CARE. But re-write societal family rules - I’ll have to disagree.

#138 Since the faggots in question are in the service under don’t talk don’t bend over they might do well to simply SU. 10% does not a majority make. Look many here post about how killing is immoral then talk about Pace as though he is immoral but fags in the service will do the immoral and kill. So fags want protection under the law and that is not the same topic as, “Pace is evil since he hates faggots!”
Faggots want hetros to accept what morality, law and common sense say as WRONG. Some rapists claim that they could not help themselves and were born that way. Many men are rapists and since they can’t help themselves by having rape and assault laws we are hurting their chances of forming rape/victim relationships.
We are talking about the military here and close quarter’s life and death etc. The Army is and has typically been the domain of the hetro alpha males. Out of respect for the 90% the best the fags can do is accept that they are super unique. They are fags and they want to kill. They must also remember that the rest of the guys around them may hesitate or react in an unexpected way leading to their injury or death if it is known they are faggots.
March 19th, 2007 at 6:53 pmThat’s what I’m talking about, Valiant Venus. It’s creeping in…

March 19th, 2007 at 7:04 pmAwww, they’re just hanging around trying to cop a peak at your glorious junk, Ben. Yeah, go with that one… it comes from a “higher” and apparently more reputable source.
