Justice Department documents released.»

ABC News reports:

New e-mails released this evening by the Justice Department reveal the depth of White House involvement in the discussions to fire eight U.S. attorneys last year. The thousands of pages of e-mails suggest the White House was involved in the plan from the beginning.

The e-mails detail conversations about attorneys targeted for dismissal. There are no e-mails from Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, who reportedly does not use e-mail, though the Justice Department says messages show some indication that Gonzales’ former chief of staff, D. Kyle Sampson, kept the attorney general apprised.

The House Judiciary Committee website is likely to have some of the emails in PDF form available tonight.

UPDATE: U.S. News reports: “One day after Justice Department Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty testified on Capitol Hill about the reasons eight U.S. attorneys were summarily fired, a Justice Department spokesman…sent an E-mail to Gonzales’ chief of staff, Kyle Sampson, and spokeswoman Tasia Scolinos saying Gonzales was unhappy with McNulty’s testimony regarding why U.S. attorney Bud Cummins of Arkansas had been let go. That E-mail is what is causing the most concern at the Justice Department.” During his hearing, McNulty had agreed that Cummins was fired even though “he had done nothing wrong” and was simply making way for Rove protege Tim Griffin.

UPDATE II: Justice Dept. official: “You have no idea how bad it is here.

    Time to subpoena Turdblossom!

Looks like we’re gonna hit the Gonzo, Cheney, Rove resignation trifecta!

    YES!!!

Let the resignations and impeachment begin.

Gorn; it was an 18 minute gap.

Zooey; how was your local protest Saturday? In DC the Bushbots were out in droves-thousands of them. Shouting ’shame on you’ and ‘traitors’ at us. The only thing missing on their side of the street was the brown shirts, jackboots, and swastikas.

Due to bus-lag, I’m out of here.

No…. Because it can be used against him… Like Bush does not use email…..

It leaves a trail and it does not lie, when it is presented to a court of law!!

  9. Zooey Says:

Sorry I missed you Uncle Ho. It was pretty damned lame, but we don’t have a lot of people. It was more fun watching the wrecking ball knock the shit out of the abandoned grain elevator. :)

I’m going to a protest in Spokane on Saturday. It’s bound to have a little more activity.

  12. GSD Says:

Alberto, behaving like a cheesy-bag mob boss who turns on the radio to drown out wire taps.

Nice to know these cheese-holes probably have doubles like Saddam too.

Although Alberto Gonzales’ double would be the size of a Hummel.

That’s our Attorney General the guy they call Seedy Gonzales.

  14. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) Says:

Cummins was fired even though “he had done nothing wrong” and was simply making way for Rove protege Tim Griffin

I have less problem accepting this purely political move, in comparison with the other seven firings which smell of obstruction and manipulation of justice.

    Isn’t true oversight grand!?

  15. Briseadh na Faire Says:

Well, if Cummins was let go to make room for a political croney, that, at least, is not obstructing justice.

So, from what we know about this particular firing, it doesn’t look like any law was broken.

It merely follows the Bush Doctrine of putting Party Loyalty as the most important qualification for any job in the Government. The net result is that the Government is the Party, and the Party is the Government.

“If you’re not with us, you’re with the enemy.”

Republicans might as well run on that campaign slogan, for it speaks the truth about their view of America.

  16. Briseadh na Faire Says:

PLC, this version of “oversight” is merely entertainment. There is no true oversight, as there is no impeachment hearings.

Minor players are thrown off the bus, but the people in power remain untouched, as do those behind the scenes running the whole show.

  17. Marie Says:

Gonzo and McNulty are toast. They will remain only as long as it takes to persuade others to take their places. Then it will be on to the confirmation hearing which will be interesting.
Meanwhile, although the cast of characters on the perimeter are being picked off one by one, the central cast of Bush, Cheney and Rove remain safe and secure in the inner circle, protected by their toadies.

  18. big papa Says:

“There are no e-mails from Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, who reportedly does not use e-mail,”

    A very telling revelation…

    …A “public” servant…

…in a position that requires the UTMOST transparency…

    …in order to maintain credibility…

…for a department that represents one of the pillars of DEMOCRACY…

…and is entrusted with safeguarding this country’s “rule of law”…

    …its CHIEF officer…

…doesn’t use email, in THIS day and age…

…ONLY someone who is computer illiterate or…

    …with something to hide…

    …doesn’t use email…

  19. Marie Says:

You all realize, of course, that NONE of this would be investigated, NOTHING would have been done on any scandal, it would be business as usual if the Dems had not won control of the House in November. It gave us oversight for the first time in six years over the most corrupt and secretive administration in history. If oversight was ever needed before, it is desperately needed on this administration.
They had 6 years to operate with impunity, making their own rules, changing laws, and otherwise acting as a monarchy - no one was able to stand up and say “wait a minute - we have to look at this.”
Until now. Hopefully it is not too late.

  20. Marie Says:

Bush has said he doesn’t use Emails either. (on the advice of his consigliere?) Evidence. Evidence. Evidence.
They learned from the tapes of Johnson and Nixon; better to have no permanent record and instead build a strong army of toadies instead who will defend you and protect you.

  37. Jake Says:

I was using “pogrom” as in you liberals here at TP are out for conservative blood, no matter if we are innocent or not. What’s next, breaking all the windows in our BMW’s? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystal_night

I don’t talk smack to him, and he’s ok to me. i find him amusing to say the most, but i can still be cordial with him. why does everyone get so upset?(btw, ‘taking a jake’ is on e of the funniest damn things i’ve heard in a very long time..

I went to your link but i don’t get the connection. How does holding people accountable who theaten our safety as a democracy and a nation relate to that link? If you think about it the real provokers of treasonous acts are the ones who need to be held accountable for. BTW, see my above Q to Zooey. Which hearing are you most looking forward to?

  50. Clyde the Ripper Says:

Hey Jake! How come you left the last thread before you answered my question. Again: Why is it that you claim King George the Dumb is right in locking Arabs in torture camps while FDR was wrong in relocating the Japanese (your words: “locking the japs in intenment (sic) camps?” Don’t cut and run again and claim prostate problems as you did last time.

Since I disagree that the AG “theaten[s] our safety as a democracy and a nation” I consider the issue linked. As for which hearing I am worried about, I don’t worry (see Jesus’s discourse on the sparrow in the Book of Matthew).

  55. Jake Says:

    Clyde the Ripper:

Sorry I missed your question — I have a life outside of TP — and I never claimed prostate problems. I’m pretty sure I at least capitalized the word “Japs” too, but I guess the fact that they were shipped to camp(S) by the hundreds of thousands and all turned out to be innocent is qualitatively and quantitatively different, don’t you think?

Blind obedience is no replacement for the truth. It’s a charming quality in a pet, but pathetic in a human being.

You can type whatever rubbish you want. It won’t stop the inevitable and will only make you look like an even greater fool than you already are.

Why do you keep spouting off this garbage that only falls on deaf ears. This incessant parotting of idiotic GOP talking points may carry some sway with the 30% inbred and moronic Bush loyalists. But most people here see right through that crap. You aren’t gonna gain nay converts.

Go find somewhere else to waste your time.

You are becoming tedious predictable and very, VERY boring. We can already tell what your gonna say before you even post it. So what’s the point? Are you a masochist or something?

I guess you can see now how male Democrats felt before. After all when you people impeached Bill Clinton for lying about a blow job can you imagine how scary that was for other Democrat males. I mean most men, democrats anyway, have gotten one at some time in their lives. And most would prefer not to be asked about it in front of their wives. So when you guys asked Clinton in front of the world and his family well men were clenching everywhere.

So I’ll tell you what you guys always tell us.
Stop whining, buck up and take it like a man.

  70. whiteyfresh Says:

OH, so are you playing the “first they came for the (insert group here), and I did nothing” bit? I think that makes your postion a little more clear to me. So, since Jesus hears every sparrow that hits the ground, he’s heard over 3,200 sparrows hit the ground in Iraq?

Not much call- It’s the single most popular cheese in the world!
    Not round here, sir.
And what is the most popular cheese round here?
    Ilchester, sir.
    Is it.
Oh yes, sir. It’s staggeringly popular in this manor, squire.
    Is it?.

  79. JPV Says:

Ok, so far I found this little tidbit from Kyle Sampson in one of the pdfs…

I am only in favor of executing on a plan to push some USAs out if we really are ready and willing to put in the time necessary to select candidates and get them appointed — it will be counterproductive to DOJ operations if we push USAs out and then don’t have replacements ready to roll immediately. In addition, I strongly recommend that, as a matter of Administration policy, we utilize the new statutory provisions that authorize the AG to make USA appointments. We can continue to do selection in JSC, but then should have DOJ take over entirely the vet and appointment. By not going the PAS route. We can give far less deference to home-State Senators and thereby get (1) our preferred person appointed and (2) do it far faster and more efficiently, at less political cost to the White House.

Another interesting email that I found in the “dump”…

    From: Chiara, Margaret M. (USAMIW)[MM.Chiara@usdoj.gov]
    Sent: Thursday, February 01, 2007 3:41 ‘PM
    To: McNulty, Paul J .
    Cc: Elston, Michael (ODAG)
    Subject: WDMI

Paul: February 1 seems to be the right date to provide a status report. I continue to vigorously pursue employment. In addition to applying to numerous public agencies and organizations, I am now working with a “headhunter”. Who knew this could be so difficult?
Michael Elston informed me that I must vacate my position by March 1. Therefore, I plan to announce my resignation on the afternoon of February 14 or the morning of February 15. I need all the time, salary and benefits available so my resignation will be effective on February 28. The first question within WDMI will be who is the nominee? When will I be able to answer that question?
FYI: Everyone who knows about my required resignation, (primarily our USA colleagues and people who are providing references ), is astonished that I am being asked to leave. Now that if has been widely reported that departing USAs have either failed to meet performance expectations or that they acted independently rather than follow DOJ/EOUSA directives, the situation is so much worse. You know that I am in neither catagory. This makes me so sad. Why have I been asked to resign? The real reason, epecially if true, would be a lot easier to live with. Margaret

I’m not the second batch right now. Did you see anything in the first one except Drug policy and Immigration Enforcement problems with Carol Lam?

It’s more than interesting that a sudden rash of complaints about Lam’s prosecution of criminal aliens comes flooding in from Republican congressmen less than two weeks after federal agents execute search warrants on the home of Kyle “Dusty” Foggo.

It’s downright hilarious that “Duke” Cunningham had the nerve to sign a letter complaining about Lam just one month before pleading guilty to bribery charges and resigning from Congress.

FYI - Michigan is going to push this out tomorrow. The first question will be whether she was asked to leave. The first assistant said he did not know what Margaret planned to say in response to that. Has anyone talked to her this week to get a feel for where she is at with this? She is also faxing a copy of her resignation letter to the AG and the WH -the first assistant did not know what it said. Has she discussed it with any of you? I believe this will generate another round ‘of rough stories as expected- her press release paints a pretty dam good record and emphasizes her many “firsts” as a woman which the media will no doubt play up. I am planning to decline comment out of here with respect to whether she was as to leave.

Paul: On November 3, Michael Elston conveyed professional shocking news. I had previously consulted him about the feasibility of a brief leave of absence to serve as the interim dean of the Michigan State University College of Law. (Note: MSU is interested in me only if I am the USA for WOMI.) Mr. Elston informed me that such a leave is only an option when the alternate service is within the federal government. He further informed me that I should expect contact from the White House requesting my resignation as USA shortly after the November 7 elections. He could offer no explanation other than that I erroneously assumed that good service guaranteed longevity because other USAs have been asked for their resignation without cause. In my case the service has exemplary in a difficult district in addition to being an active contributor since appointment on 3 of the A.G.’s subcommittees. While I live in hope that this dire prediction is untrue, I am contacting you because I need assistance to remain in federal service with a comparable compensation or, quite frankly, I will lose everything that I have been working toward for the past five years. My chronology will not allow me to recoup from such an unanticipated financial catastrophe. I trust that I can count on you to intervene or provide an alternative. Margaret

Harriet/Bill, please see the attached. Please note (1) the plan, by its terms, would commence this week; (2) I have consulted with the DAG, but not yet informed others who would need to be brought into the loop, including Acting Associate AG Bill Mercer, EOUSA Director Mike Battle, and AGAC Chair Johnny Sutton (nor have I informed anyone in Karl’s shop, another pre-execution necessity I would recommend); and (3) I am concerned that to execute this plan properly we must all be on the same page and be steeled to withstand any political upheaval that might result (see Step 3); if we start caving to complaining U.S. Attorneys or Senators then we shouldn’t do it — it’ll be more trouble than it is worth.

We’ll stand by for a green light from you. Upon the green light, we’ll (1) circulate the below plan to the list of folks in Step 3 (and ask that you circulate it to Karl’s shop), (2) confirm that Kelley is making the Senator/Bush political lead calls, and (3) get Battle making the calls to the USAs. Let us know.

  109. The Oracle Says:

Last year just before the November elections, a major story broke that dominated the pre-election airwaves and the front pages of newspapers: MARK FOLEY and the House page scandal plus news that House Republicans had covered up his activities for years.

Rove and the White House counterattacked…primarily to replace negative Republican news with negative Democratic news.

The U.S. Attorneys were the vehicle employed to execute this plan. Thus, the pressure on New Mexico’s U.S. Attorney to speed up the release of grand jury indictments against Democrats, which the U.S. Attorney (to his credit) refused to do. So, he was fired essentially for political insubordination.

This order to indict Democrats MUST have gone out to all the U.S. Attorneys. Many complied. Some refused, or didn’t have any real cases to prosecute and weren’t interested in fabricating cases against Democrats (voter fraud?). Some were already involved in cases against Republicans, but settled for lesser charges instead of going after more serious charges (e.g. Patrick Fitzgerald settling for Libby and lesser charges instead of going for the conspirators in the Bush administration behind the outing of a covert CIA operative).

Anyway, I’ll be interested to see if there’s any mention in the emails of Mark Foley and needing to do some damage control before the elections last fall. Or, will there be a suspicious gap in the emails released that cover the two-month period before the elections?
