ABC News reports:
New e-mails released this evening by the Justice Department reveal the depth of White House involvement in the discussions to fire eight U.S. attorneys last year. The thousands of pages of e-mails suggest the White House was involved in the plan from the beginning.
The e-mails detail conversations about attorneys targeted for dismissal. There are no e-mails from Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, who reportedly does not use e-mail, though the Justice Department says messages show some indication that Gonzales’ former chief of staff, D. Kyle Sampson, kept the attorney general apprised.
The House Judiciary Committee website is likely to have some of the emails in PDF form available tonight.
UPDATE: U.S. News reports: “One day after Justice Department Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty testified on Capitol Hill about the reasons eight U.S. attorneys were summarily fired, a Justice Department spokesman…sent an E-mail to Gonzales’ chief of staff, Kyle Sampson, and spokeswoman Tasia Scolinos saying Gonzales was unhappy with McNulty’s testimony regarding why U.S. attorney Bud Cummins of Arkansas had been let go. That E-mail is what is causing the most concern at the Justice Department.” During his hearing, McNulty had agreed that Cummins was fired even though “he had done nothing wrong” and was simply making way for Rove protege Tim Griffin.
UPDATE II: Justice Dept. official: “You have no idea how bad it is here.“

Time to subpoena Turdblossom!

Zooey; how was your local protest Saturday? In DC the Bushbots were out in droves-thousands of them. Shouting ’shame on you’ and ‘traitors’ at us. The only thing missing on their side of the street was the brown shirts, jackboots, and swastikas.

Odds on what time Tuesday AM?? haha
March 19th, 2007 at 9:29 pmCummins was fired even though “he had done nothing wrong†and was simply making way for Rove protege Tim Griffin
I have less problem accepting this purely political move, in comparison with the other seven firings which smell of obstruction and manipulation of justice.
Isn’t true oversight grand!?
March 19th, 2007 at 9:32 pmWell, if Cummins was let go to make room for a political croney, that, at least, is not obstructing justice.
So, from what we know about this particular firing, it doesn’t look like any law was broken.
It merely follows the Bush Doctrine of putting Party Loyalty as the most important qualification for any job in the Government. The net result is that the Government is the Party, and the Party is the Government.
Republicans might as well run on that campaign slogan, for it speaks the truth about their view of America.
March 19th, 2007 at 9:34 pmPLC, this version of “oversight” is merely entertainment. There is no true oversight, as there is no impeachment hearings.
Minor players are thrown off the bus, but the people in power remain untouched, as do those behind the scenes running the whole show.
March 19th, 2007 at 9:36 pmGonzo and McNulty are toast. They will remain only as long as it takes to persuade others to take their places. Then it will be on to the confirmation hearing which will be interesting.
March 19th, 2007 at 9:41 pmMeanwhile, although the cast of characters on the perimeter are being picked off one by one, the central cast of Bush, Cheney and Rove remain safe and secure in the inner circle, protected by their toadies.
“There are no e-mails from Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, who reportedly does not use e-mail,”
A very telling revelation…
…A “public” servant…
…in a position that requires the UTMOST transparency…
…in order to maintain credibility…
…for a department that represents one of the pillars of DEMOCRACY…
…and is entrusted with safeguarding this country’s “rule of law”…
…its CHIEF officer…
…doesn’t use email, in THIS day and age…
…ONLY someone who is computer illiterate or…
…with something to hide…
…doesn’t use email…
March 19th, 2007 at 9:41 pmYou all realize, of course, that NONE of this would be investigated, NOTHING would have been done on any scandal, it would be business as usual if the Dems had not won control of the House in November. It gave us oversight for the first time in six years over the most corrupt and secretive administration in history. If oversight was ever needed before, it is desperately needed on this administration.
March 19th, 2007 at 9:45 pmThey had 6 years to operate with impunity, making their own rules, changing laws, and otherwise acting as a monarchy - no one was able to stand up and say “wait a minute - we have to look at this.”
Until now. Hopefully it is not too late.

March 19th, 2007 at 9:48 pmBush has said he doesn’t use Emails either. (on the advice of his consigliere?) Evidence. Evidence. Evidence.
They learned from the tapes of Johnson and Nixon; better to have no permanent record and instead build a strong army of toadies instead who will defend you and protect you.
I’m going to a protest in Spokane on Saturday. It’s bound to have a little more activity.

Why do you keep spouting off this garbage that only falls on deaf ears. This incessant parotting of idiotic GOP talking points may carry some sway with the 30% inbred and moronic Bush loyalists. But most people here see right through that crap. You aren’t gonna gain nay converts.

Why quote this at length as though it is news ?
That is how attorneys get replaced, properly or inproperly, at the behest of the White House.
You could quote someone saying “emails reveal Pentagon was involved in the invasion of Iraq” to the same effect. Well yeah, that’s how that works and always has.
I would recommend your readers stop paying attention to your website and go reag Greenwald at Salon if they want to get an informed coverage of what is going on and what are meaningful developments.
March 20th, 2007 at 1:56 amI have had this idea floating around in my head lately. I think we ought to start being American citizens first. That’s what we are, first. Then we are Dems or Repubs. I would like to see a Party of American Citizens. How could the right point their fingers at the American Citizen Party. I think there is a lot of like minded people who would go along with this. Just some thing to think about. I don’t know if this is the right thread to say this, I’m sorry if it isn’t, but I just needed to get the idea out there. Thanks.
March 20th, 2007 at 2:13 amLast year just before the November elections, a major story broke that dominated the pre-election airwaves and the front pages of newspapers: MARK FOLEY and the House page scandal plus news that House Republicans had covered up his activities for years.
Rove and the White House counterattacked…primarily to replace negative Republican news with negative Democratic news.
The U.S. Attorneys were the vehicle employed to execute this plan. Thus, the pressure on New Mexico’s U.S. Attorney to speed up the release of grand jury indictments against Democrats, which the U.S. Attorney (to his credit) refused to do. So, he was fired essentially for political insubordination.
This order to indict Democrats MUST have gone out to all the U.S. Attorneys. Many complied. Some refused, or didn’t have any real cases to prosecute and weren’t interested in fabricating cases against Democrats (voter fraud?). Some were already involved in cases against Republicans, but settled for lesser charges instead of going after more serious charges (e.g. Patrick Fitzgerald settling for Libby and lesser charges instead of going for the conspirators in the Bush administration behind the outing of a covert CIA operative).
Anyway, I’ll be interested to see if there’s any mention in the emails of Mark Foley and needing to do some damage control before the elections last fall. Or, will there be a suspicious gap in the emails released that cover the two-month period before the elections?

Could we still impeach Bush,or would he be the Pres. of that party too?

March 20th, 2007 at 2:47 amIf this has half the effect on our Democracy that my dust-busting has had on my allergies, we will all be really gratified.
PS: Sorry Zooey, no take on the protest march - my bad back took precedence on Sunday, But there are still vigils this week so i hope to make one.
Goodnight!
I’ve been looking at the documents on the House Judicial Committee’s website. What?….. The DOJ thinks that releasing transcripts of hearings constititues compliance? I can just hear the staff saying, “We’ll fix them, we’ll give them pages and pages of stuff that is of no use at all — screw ‘em.”
And this is our tax dollars at work? And they have the nerve to question OUR patriotism? OUR committment to the Constitution?
What the hell has happened to our country?

Hey Kilo, this talking point was debunked repeatedly on the first day that it was brought up. It’s not that it’s outright false, it’s just that it’s simplistic, misleading and irrelevant. Very Rovian.
Right wingnuts have roughly the same MO as the mouth breathers that want to teach biblical creation in the science classroom. Their pseudo-scientific nonsense has been debunked over and over again, but they keep bringing it up as if god didn’t give them eyes to see, ears to listen, and a brain to think. The same arguments demolished on the talk.origins usenet group 15-20 years ago come up again and again anyway, and apparently will continue to do so until the End of Days.
There are people who actually believe the earth is flat, too (see http://www.theflatearthsociety.org). The explanation from their FAQ states: “Well, it looks that way up close. ” Brilliant.

March 20th, 2007 at 4:24 amWho has the numbers of prosecutions of Republicans by the Fired 8? I have heard that 80% of all political prosecutions by the US Attorneys were of Democrats and 20% were of Republicans.
Of those 20%, there must be some numbers of which prosecutors initiated them. I know Carol Lam took down Duke Cunningham. That is one case. Surely, there are statistics on which prosecutors initiated which cases and what the party affiliations were. I would like to know where to find that information.
March 20th, 2007 at 4:51 amHey Kilo, this talking point was debunked repeatedly on the first day that it was brought up.
That is not anyone’s talking point. It is just how it works. The same way that emails showing deep involvement of the Pentagon in the Iraq war would not be anyone’s “talking point” or able to be “debunked” as it is not a claim. It is just how shit works.
It’s not that it’s outright false, it’s just that it’s simplistic, misleading and irrelevant. Very Rovian.
And yet when I ask why ThinkProgress has bothered printing this simplistic and irrelevant point — that the White House was deeply involved in White House business –which takes up half of the quote, you apparently have a problem with this.
Perhaps tomorrow we can find out that the White House was deeply involved in this White House business at The White House!
Seriously.
Right wingnuts have roughly the same MO as the mouth breathers that want to teach biblical creation in the science classroom.
Do they ? Does rightwingnut MO usually include referring readers to gay liberal bloggers who have produced the most damaging exposes of Bush administration abuse of law to date, for a more intelligent analysis of what actual impropriety has gone on ?
Or are you just really crap at reading and interpreting things you see ?

In this post, TP has informed us that the White House was deeply involved in White House business at the White House. You apparently think this is a long debunked claim.
It’s not that it’s outright false, it’s just that it’s simplistic, misleading and irrelevant. Very Rovian.
Yet when I write a post dedicated solely to pointing out that this is simplistic, misleading and irrelevant, and therefore unworthy of taking up half of that quoted article you apparently have a problem with this.
Right wingnuts have roughly the same MO as the mouth breathers that want to teach biblical creation in the science classroom.
This right-winger MO I’ve diplayed is apparently the old classic: Referring people to homosexual liberal bloggers who write far more insightful and damaging accounts of White House impropriety than was originally offered.
That old right-winger favourite. Yeah.

First of all, Democratic subpoena power is proving that the current GOP adminstration is a cess pool of corruption. There are no “innocents” in the White House.
Secondly, No. I am not going to break the windows on your BMWs . . . I am going to bust out the headlights.

March 20th, 2007 at 8:45 amTHis is how the White House, Justice Dept, CIA, and the Pentagon work together, sending our children, our soldiers to die, so they can reap billions.
It’s high time for a war crimes tribunal to be convened.
“Wilkes was accused of bribing Cunningham and Foggo, who as CIA executive director ran the agency’s daily operations, to get contracts for his companies. Wilkes was head of ADCS Inc., which initially converted documents from paper to digital formats for the military and expanded into other information technology services, and two smaller logistics and lobbying firms.
In his plea agreement, Cunningham acknowledged using his position on the defense appropriations subcommittee to get millions of dollars in federal contracts for ADCS.
Foggo, who at one time was the CIA’s deputy ethics officer, was charged with conspiracy and money laundering for failing to disclose lavish gifts, meals and trips from Wilkes.”

March 20th, 2007 at 8:59 amThey allege Carol Lam was ousted in San Diego because she was investigating Republican politicians in Southern California.http://www.latimes.com/ news/ nationworld/ nation/ la-na-usattys19mar19,0,2790807.story?track=ntothtml
The Republican party has been an agent of subversion and treason throughout its history. It has cost Americans millions of lives and uncountable amounts of treasure. It and the rich, the Zionists, the Moonies, the Dixiecrats and numerous other components are guilty of high treason for their vicious undermining of our institutions.
They should all be in prison and under net surveillance for the rest of their lives.

Of course he was.

One of the things that floors me is how one of the proposed replacements being offered by the Repuglicans in the White House is Michael Jerkoff. You know the head of the Homeland Insecurity Department… Ya there’s a good candidate, he’s done such a great job “protecting” our country and it’s citizens NOT…

Moscow, Idaho is a beautiful place.
My band once played the Blue Mt. Festival there to about 10,000 people. We had a great time, and a producer from Portland, OR. had us come over & spend 2 weeks in a studio recording our original songs.
Gosh, hadn’t thought of that gig in many years.
Sorry, folks…back to reality.

March 20th, 2007 at 9:29 amGod, what a surrealist thread, with all the cheese amid :D
And, well, british cheeses haven’t been very renowned in the cheese’s history, and cheddar itself isn’t so particular at all, only by the orange coloration of some varieties. Most of the cheese varieties of Spain, France, Italy, Holland, Denmark and some other European varieties have better qualities. Trust me, I know. My father was in the food industry and I’ve tasted a good couple varieties :)
