White House seeking Gonzales replacements,

and Gonzales’ deputy Paul McNulty is almost certain to resign, The Politico reports:

Republican officials operating at the behest of the White House have begun seeking a possible successor to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, whose support among GOP lawmakers on Capitol Hill has collapsed…

Among the names floated Monday by administration officials are Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and White House anti-terrorism coordinator Frances Townsend. Former Deputy Attorney General Larry Thompson is a White House prospect. So is former solicitor general Theodore B. Olson, but sources were unsure whether he would want the job.

Republican sources also disclosed that it is now a virtual certainty that Deputy Attorney General Paul J. McNulty, whose incomplete and inaccurate congressional testimony about the prosecutors helped precipitate the crisis, will also resign shortly. Officials were debating whether Gonzales and McNulty should depart at the same time or whether McNulty should go a day or two after Gonzales.

UPDATE: Fox News’ Major Garrett reports: “Several GOP [congressional] sources told Fox tonight: Gonzales is the President’s friend and his problem, and that they will waste no political capital defending him.”

Digg It!

    “Mission Accomplished” Indeed!

Rove’s going down too, he’s even further involved in this obstruction of justice than Gonzales is

  3. Jules says:

Chertoff? Seriously, there are not at least 100,000 potential candidates out there who have greater qualifications then that ass?

Republicans have no class and even less credibility!!!

  4. VerbalKint says:

But nobody did anything wrong, Roger, Patrick, and Jake.

I like the idea of Cherthoff. The guy is a complete idiot. His Katrina performance will kill him in the hearings.

  5. veritas says:

Typical Bush MO – say one thing; do another. Publicly, today he said that he’d hoped Gonzo would stay (Gonzo should have known that he can’t be trusted based on his statements before kicking Rummy’s neocon arss out)….and now he’s investigating replacements. Is this President bipolar? It’s beginning to look that way. Which is a very frightening thought…..saying one thing and doing another is hypocritical but when done as a habit or general rule, it’s serious psychiatric disease. Has he seen a shrink lately? Perhaps he should consult with Justin A. Frank, M.D. who wrote the tell-all book on Bush entitled “Bush On the Couch”….yikes….that one will frighten you right out of your skin.

The scary thing is it’s beginning to looks every bit like what Dr. Frank has diagnosed and predicted about Bush. Very scary stuff.

  6. katy says:

they should be indicted… especially gonzo…
but, unlikely this soon… so, just go… go go go…

  7. veritas says:

#1 You’re right….The entire administration should resign because the ugly truths which will be forthcoming will make them wish they’d resigned. Perhaps them remaining will be “poetic justice” since they will then have to lie to defend their crimes and then be convicted all of perjury. Or perhaps the american people will grow some cojones and call for the impeachment of them all????

  8. veritas says:

CHERTOFF! CHERTOFF?? Chertoff is a gerbil who couldn’t handle getting water to the victims of Katrina for goodness sakes. He’s bungled everything he’s done and has the persona of a gerbil….or a sniveling asp. This guy will do nothing for the integrity of the office; in fact, his karma from Katrina and the lack of trust in him based on his performance, will tank his effectiveness to do the job (if he even has the qualifications for it in the first place)….Great job Brownie!

  9. Marie says:

Jerkoff? Oh, sorry, I mean Chertoff? Chertoff? As AG? OMG.
From the frying pan into the fire.

  10. wayne says:

Sadly, right now it is such a mess in the JD, not many HONEST people are going to want the job. =/

  11. VerbalKint says:

The Katrina hearings focused mostly on Brown, but they could just as easily have focused entirely on Chertoff. Now that Brown is out of the picture, a confirmation hearing with Cherthoff would air out his complete incompetence and buffoonery during Katrina. But Bush has a special knack for choosing extraordinarily incompetent people. Just look at Rumsfeld and Gonzales. So let us pray that he nominates Chertoff.

  21. veritas says:

#11 On the HBO 4 part special on Katrina, the material fact was uncovered that it was Chertoff who pulled higher rank than Brownie and failed abysmally. So, of course, Bush appoints another loser to the position of Homeland Security. Since when has integrity meant doing the diametric opposite of what is right and honest? The guy who botches Katrina then is appointed as Homeland Security Head. I think we will all look back and see that this administration was one huge joke on the american public. What was once right is now wrong; what was once illegal is now legal – by a mere tweaking of semantics and/or creating intentional loopholes in the law so that the conartists can escape. Amazing how degenerated this government has become and how low this country has descended….now all we need is for China to call that 30+ percent of ownership in our national debt due and payable and this country will sink like the Titanic. ALL THIS – Thanks to Bush and his Jim-Jones-fashioned cadre of Bushies!

  23. veritas says:

#14 Do we know that Gonzales is a lawyer? Frankly, from his statments at hearings and his lack of finesse, I find it difficult to believe. We all realized he was merely a “puppet” but he didn’t even project a quasi-intelligent version of puppetry when speaking publicly. We collectively cringed to imagine that he holds the Dept. of Justice in his hands and he appeared so clueless.

  24. veritas says:

#21 No, I think today’s hearings and Gonzo’s imminent dismissal have them all clueless….what compromised brains they do have in their cranium are spinning like a tilt-a-whirl. What can they say now? Only a clueless idiot would continue to post when there is nothing positive or credible for them to say. They realize that their spin & drivel game is over.

  28. Impeachcheneythenbush says:

Cherotoff, Townsend and Olsen? (Don’t know about Thompson..yet). What is it that these people don’t get? Do they honestly think that playing musical chairs or trying to appoint people (like Olsen) who have been, frankly, tarnished by the whole 2000 election is going to satisfy the American people? Oh, and I’m not one bit surprised that they are going to get rid of Gonzales. One thing we know for sure…when the President says one thing, you can bet the reality is the opposite.

  30. CoffinsDrapedWithFlags says:

WTF… I knew it was the “Brownie you’re doing a heck of a job” support coming from the WH. You mean to say that boy Bush is looking for a replacement for Gonzales? Thought boy Bush said that he supports his main consigliere, Gonzales, oops, I meant Attonery General Gonzales :)

  31. veritas says:

The fact that the WH is shopping for a Gonzales replacement is quite illuminating as it occurs simultaneous to the document dump which will surely be indicting to many in high places. Bush, mistakenly, hopes that his sacrifice of Gonzales will end this firestorm of corruption leading to the top – It will not. Instead, people will see that this action is not because he has suddenly developed a soul; rather it is because he KNOWS what he and Gonzales have done will be revealed to the american public soon.

In fact, it could be said that the impetus and sentiment behind the people’s anger on this attorney issue is a culmination of an avalanche of lies by this administration, by Bush himself, and by those Bushies around him. It is the lies leading up to the war; it’s the horrendously treasonous action of outing a covert operative for political purposes; it is the illegal wiretapping of americans (against our constitution); it’s the abuse of the Patriot Act; it’s the overturn of Habeas Corpus; It’s Abu Graib; It’s an Unprecedented National Debt; It’s about war profiteering; It’s about oil grabbing….and the litany of horrible things goes on and on….and on…

The sum total of all of this lying and overt corruption (did I mention voting fraud?) is why people are jumping on this DOJ nightmare to the extent that they are. We’re sick and tired of being lied to; We’re sick and tired of having our constitution trampled by a twisted group of power brokers who are “wolves in sheep’s clothing” – pretending to work for the people and care about their welfare and screwing them behind their backs.

It’s over. The american people have reached a critical threshold – a critical mass of rejection of this administration. For Bush and his Bushies, their nightmare has just begun. There will be investigations upon investigations and the cold, hard truth will get darker and darker as americans realize that they’ve been duped by those whom they trusted.

It’s quintessential “BETRAYAL” and it will take time for people to recover and heal from this level of betrayal by those pretending to care about them.

  32. veritas says:

#29 Oops…we all fell into compacency again and believed something the Chimp had said, didn’t we? Of course, he’s looking for a replacement. 49. JPV says:

    http://www.usnews.com/usnews/blogs/news_blog/070319/paralysis_sets_in_as_doj_faces.htm

The Justice Department now says the document dump will contain closer to 2000 documents.

“You have no idea,” said one Justice official, “how bad it is here.”

The fear that virtually any piece of communication will have to be turned over has paralyzed department officials’ ability to communicate effectively and respond in unison to the crisis, as has the fact that senior Justice officials themselves say they still don’t know the entire story about what happened that led to the crisis. So they are afraid that anything they put down on paper could be viewed as lies or obfuscation, when in fact, the story is changing daily as new documents are found and as the Office of Legal Counsel conducts its own internal probe into the matter.

The Bush administration is making its own calibrated calculations. A stubbornly loyal individual, the president has had trouble cutting his ties to his embattled cabinet secretaries. However, if he chooses to keep Gonzales on, he is at risk of seriously eroding political capital at a time when his administration is being criticized even by party loyalists.

    —–

But if he decides to let him go, then who can fill Gonzales’s place? For one thing, who would want the job? And who could Bush find that could get Senate confirmation, since Democrats now run the show? It would have to be a seasoned insider, a consummate veteran or an elder statesman who has bipartisan respect and acceptance and a squeaky-clean record.

“The trouble,” says one former official, “is that no one comes to mind.”

  52. bluestatedon says:

“Gonzales is the President’s friend and his problem, and that they will waste no political capital defending him.”

If true, this is an ominous development for Bush. It may be an indication that GOPers in Congress are starting to conclude that going to the mat for Bush is a losing proposition politically. As dumb as the vast majority of evolution/global warming/factual reality-denying GOPers are, they’re just smart enough to realize that they’re in a very different position than Bush: they’ll have to face the voters in ‘08. Nothing focuses the attention on reality more effectively than the suspicion that the train you’ve hitched your wagon to is speeding straight for a cliff. Abstract principles like loyalty to your party’s nominal leader disappear pretty quickly.

If that feeling spreads, then Bush will be on increasingly thin ice with his own party when he stonewalls Congressional subpoenas. The clincher for Nixon’s resignation was when Congressional Republicans came to the White House and told him it that it was either resign or face certain impeachment. Eventually, these GOPers will see that Bush doesn’t care any more about them than displaced Katrina refugees. They’re all just expendable pawns in the service of propping up his gigantic and gigantically fragile ego.

Michael Brown aka Brownie would be as good an AG as Gonzales. If unavailable, there’s a lawyer here in my hometown who doesn’t get much work since his wife and children left him. Nominee: I will work with Congress to repeal the Patriot Act; I will restore to office the 8 fired US attorneys; I will end all illegal wiretapping and warrantless surveillance. Also, I want to go on record right now stating that Habeas Corpus is a cornerstone of our legal system and as long as I’m Attorney General, we will honor and abide by the rule of law.

(Democratic members of the Committee are looking at each other, smiling approvingly while several spectators are “oohing” and “aahing” audibly.)

Sen Leahy: Your reasoning and conviction are highly compelling. Remind us again where you went to law school?

Nominee: Oh, I didn’t go to law school.

    Sen Leahy: You didn’t?

Nominee: No, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

… at least he’ll be more than willing…

    …to look into it…

  82. Kid Clu says:

All the lawyers who advertise on daytime TV have been recruited, but refused the position because “the adminstration is too slimy.” Because this is a job that Americans do not want to do, rumor is that the AG opening will now have to be outsourced to an offshore contractor:D

  83. TerrytheTurtle says:

So do ya think Chimpy is trying to Torquemada it?

    ba bum

  84. Jay Randal says:

Bush and Cheney must be forced to resign, because they will keep appointing stupid butt kissers to cabinet positions. Gonzales just gets replaced with another criminal imbicile.

  85. JPark says:

#76 John M…I second. However, you are not a Bush crony so good luck getting that nomination. Really…Chertoff? Are these people stoned?

  86. The Artist Formerly Known as WORFEUS says:

Chertoff doesn’t have a prayer of senate confirmation.

    Period.

  87. Raymond Funamoto says:

ONCE GONZO the CLOWN QUITS, I WOULD LIKE TO SEE HOW CHIMPya and Bushland Uber Allies GETS A A.G. OF THEIR “CHOICE” CONFIRMED IN A DEMOCRATICALLY-CONTROLLED HOUSE AND SENATE—-HAH HAH HAH HAH HAH!!!!! VENGEANCE IS SO SWEET!!!!!

  88. JPark says:

#85 That is the very reason I hope he is nominated.

  89. Raymond Funamoto says:

“Nosferatu” Chertoff and Olson DON’T HAVE A SNOWBALL’S CHANCE IN HELL OF BEING EITHER NOMINATED OR CONFIRMED, AND NEITHER WILL BE, BECAUSE OF THEIR SHODDY AND BIASED RECORDS–SO repugnant-repubs CAN GNASH THEIR ROTTEN TEETH TO STUMPS–IT AIN’T GONNA HAPPEN—-A GEAS CURSE ON BOTH OF THEM!!!!!

  90. JPark says:

#88 That leaves Silbermann. Might as well kiss our civil liberties goodbye.

  91. The Artist Formerly Known as WORFEUS says:

If they are stupid enough to nominate him JPark, then all they will do is give the federal prosecuters a good reason to investigate them for corruption.

Not that they don;’t have good reason now. But with the spotlight on them now like it is, if they try to put a Bush cronie in as the new Attorney General, it will just make him look more guilty than he already does.

  92. R says:

I would like to suggest my good friend and experienced law student Homer Simpson, as a replacement to Alberto Gonzales for Attorney General. He is already stupid and there is no need to coach Homer on the finer talents of saying the wrong thing at the wrong time.

  93. Homer Simpson says:

    DOH! Why me laugh?

  94. The Artist Formerly Known as WORFEUS says:

With a Democrat congress standing between his nominee and confirmation and given his administration is under the microscope at the moment, I suspect Bush will be forced to find a candidate who at least appears independent.

Anything less will just reinforce the appearance of corruption.

  95. JPark says:

#90 WORF, you have a lot more trust in the Dems than I do (well, maybe they would with an obvious target like Chertoff but Silbermann…I am not so sure and he is much more dangerous…he is a true believer.)

  96. JPark says:

#93 I used to think that until the “gang of 14″. I am thinking the Dems own stock in Vaseline.

I would like to nominate Alfred E. Neuman as a replacement to Alberto Gon…. oh wait, I forgot…… never mind.

    He’s already serving as President.

  98. Raymond Funamoto says:

GONZO’s departure is THE BEGINNING OF THE END for Bushland Uber Allies—-THEY WILL FEEL THE FULL FURY OF AMERICAN JUSTICE WHICH WILL CRUSH THEM AND THEIR SUPPORTERS LIKE THE FILTHY PISS-ANTS THEY ARE!!!!! MARK MY WORDS!!!!! SO MOTE IT BE!!!!!

#90 WORF, you have a lot more trust in the Dems than I do

    Comment by JPark — March 20, 2007 @ 12:20 am

Well, I’m with you there. With spineless leaders like Nancy “Impeachment’s off the table” Pelosi its hard to imagine them doing anything right.

But times are changing, and far too much information is coming out. We have a new Bush scandal almost daily now, and signs of corruption are everywhere. Guys like Chuck Schummer CAN get the job done in the right circumstances.

    These are the right circumstances.

  100. JPark says:

#98 Well, Chuck is not on the top of my “Get things done” list (unless it helps him politically) but Waxman and Conyers (and maybe Leahy) will do just fine, I hope.

  101. The Artist Formerly Known as WORFEUS says:

GONZO’s departure is THE BEGINNING OF THE END for Bushland Uber Allies—-

    Comment by Raymond Funamoto — March 20, 2007 @ 12:23 am

Raymond makes a valid point. If the Attorney General resigns in the midst of this scandal, then the focus will be forced to turn on Bush. Its inevitable.

And since Gonzales is going to be forced to step down, because he doesn’t have the support of the GOP, then that means we are seeing the beginning of the end for the Bush administration.

  102. The Artist Formerly Known as WORFEUS says:

They’re all good at getting it done when the tides with them. Waxman is a good man. Biden and Kennedy can get aggressive to. And they don’t want to be under oath on camera in front of Ben Veniste.

But in general, I am just saying I think the circumstances right now outweigh the wimpiness factor of the democrats. There is so much corruption scandal that has been made public, and with the approval of the President all but gone, its going to be impossible to avoid.

  103. JPark says:

#101 I hope you are right, WORF. I have seen them cave on way too many things. I AM surprised at how far they have gone. Gonzalez is toast, no ifs, ands or buts. I hope they go further. By the way, ugh, Biden has the balls of a newborn…female.

  104. GaPeach103 says:

Scene in Senate Judiciary Committee Room:

Sen Leahy (two fisted rub of head): Judge Pickering, although I appreciate your willingness to appear before this committee, I must tell you that you have little to no chance of being confirmed. What makes you think you are qualified to serve as Attorney General of the United States?

Judge Pickering: Look heah, Eyeam as qualeefied as any other inbred Southern gentleman. Eye take ekcepshun to your comments, suh!

Sen Leahy(with exasperation): Have you at long last resigned from the CCC, the Conservative Citizens Council Judge Pickering? Isn’t it little more than the KkK in a suit and tie?

Judge Pickering: How dare you attempt to malign the outstanding civic and community service done by the CCC. Resign? On the contrary, Eyeam proud to be a member and to serve as nashnal preznit of the CCC.

Sen Leahy: Do you have any African-American or Jewish members?

Judge Pickering: (Laughing) Now we at the CCC believe in privusee, but I guess it won’t harm anythang if I tell you that Clarence Thomas is one of our most distinguished members (winking roguishly). Where’s Joe?

Sen Leahy: Joe? I’m not certain…

Judge Pickering: Joe Lieberman! He’s one of our most beloved members. He and George Allen often eat a ham samich during our meetings.

Sen Leahy: (rapping gavel) Order, please! The committee will be in order.

  105. Dumb_Fox says:

This is especially for my buddy VerbalKint… see comment #7:

Dumb Fox takes it to the house.

  106. Mauimom says:

No one seems to have noticed Ed Meese, neanderthal AG from the Nixon days. He was dusted off and appointed a member of the Iraq Study Group. I guess that qualifies these days as “tan, rested & ready.”

The delicious thing about this whole “kerfluffle” is thinking about the confirmation hearings of each of these toadies Bush might send up to the Hill. Oversight at last!!

  107. Bryan says:

Unfortunately Gonzalez isn’t the problem. They’ll just find another way!

  108. kathleen says:

Come on why does anyone think that right wing radicals like Bill Kristol are so excited by this Attorney General. They want to take Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty out.

He is the prosecutor for the upcoming AIPAC/ROSEN ESPIONAGE TRIAL COMING UP (IF IT IS NOT DELAYED FOR THE 5TH TIME OR EVEN DISMISSED IF THE IRAELIS FIRSTERS HAVE THEIR WAY).

This is a chess game and they want to cast clouds over the upcoming espionage trial.

    Watch Closely.

  109. Brooke Oberwetter says:

Yes, it is time for both Gonzales and McNulty to go. Both are liars and failures. I would like to see Andrew Langer for AG and John Berlau as his deputy. Both have wonderful experience. Berlau is also an expert on prostitution, qualifying him to prosecute other crimes. Langer has political ambitions and this would help him. The only issue I see is that neither is a lawyer but I think Bush can get around that if he wants to.
