Bush lashes out.

Bush lashes out.»

At a press conference moments ago:

bush1.jpg

“We will not go along with a partisan fishing expedition aimed at honorable public servants. The initial response by Democrats unfortunately shows some appear more interested in scoring political points than in learning the facts. It will be regrettable if they choose to head down the partisan road of issuing subpoenas and demanding show trials. And I have agreed to make key White House officials and documents available. I proposed a reasonable way to avoid an impasse, and I hope they don’t choose confrontation. I will oppose any attempts to subpoena White House officials.”

UPDATE: Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) said, “I don’t accept [the White House’s] offer. It is not constructive and it is not helpful to be telling the Senate how to do our investigation, or to prejudge its outcome. … Testimony should be on the record, and under oath. That’s the formula for true accountability.”

“I will oppose any attempts to subpoena White House officials”

The Constitutional crisis is looming. We thought it would come over his plans to illegally invade Iran.

But Bush is planning to bring this to a head now. He’s going to challenge the COngress. We’ll see if the COngress is made up of patriots or sniveling corrupted sychophants. They will either call Bush’s bluff and demand subpoenas be honored, and if the subpoenas are not, go to the Supreme COurt and then — to the streets.

  10. TripMaster Monkey Says:

Just got back from watching the President’s speech…the only word that adequately fits Chimpy’s demeanor was ‘pugnacious’…it looked like he was going to start swinging any second.

The principle argument that Chimpy put forth for not allowing Rove and Miers to testify under oath was that he was concerned that establishing such a precedent would keep presidential advisors from speaking candidly, harming the ability of the President to receive sound advice.

What a crock. Chimpy sees the constitutional crisis up ahead, and responds by jamming the throttle wide open. It’s obvious that this sociopath would rather destroy this country than hand it over. He and his band of murderous thugs need to be removed from power.

  20. John H. Farr Says:

I fully expect the Democrats to cave on this and NOT issue subpoenas. Judging from the past two months, the Democratic party is completely dead and useless.

  21. ChildrenofLir Says:

That was the same backdrop for the “I did not have se*ual relations with that woman, Ms. Lewinsky moment. And he got angry and wagged his finger.

For a Presidential staff supposedly smart on PR, that was an incredibly dumb place to do that announcement.

  28. wayne Says:

    From rawstory:

In a statement released before Bush’s remarks, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) released a statement which called on Rove to testify under oath.

“After telling a bunch of different stories about why they fired the U.S. Attorneys, the Bush Administration is not entitled to the benefit of the doubt,” Reid said. “Congress and the American people deserve a straight answer. If Karl Rove plans to tell the truth, he has nothing to fear from being under oath like any other witness.”

The people will arrest Bush. Ever heard of the French REvolution.

  34. Roger_Roger Says:

Bush is correct completely here. While the Dems have the right to perform these political show trials, Bush shouldn’t lower himself to those standards. He hopes, as well as most Americans, that the Dems move on and start focusing on real issues. What Bush did wasn’t even a crime regardless of his reasons.

  35. wyderp Says:

bush’s premise is that this gonzales flap is all just political posturing from the democrats. this argument appears specious when the administration is scared to testify under oath and is attempting absurd legal acrobatics to avoid it. But ok, let’s just see. let’s go ahead and have a national referendum on whether rove and others should testify. no partisan games here, let the people decide. if bush is such a tough guy he will suggest this himself

  46. veritas Says:

If it’s just a “political flap” as the master of chicanery purports, then let’s see it via sworn testimony. Insisting on unsworn testimony is an “unofficial admission of guilt” and people can see right through it.

  51. ForTruth Says:

    Jake,

I will let Leahy issue subpoena’s that have yet to be issued.

  52. helenahandbasket Says:

roger_roger: A show trial, comrade, implies that the charges are baseless. So why are worried about rove, et al testifying under oath?
    Are you scared like bush?

  53. Erroll Says:

If Bush claims to be interested “in learning the facts” then why has he emphatically stated that White House employees will not be testifying under oath, on the record, in a public forum? What is he and the rest of the administration trying to hide? Why is he not allowing sunshine to fall on their testimony? The word hypocrite is not strong enough to describe the words that tumble from the mouth of this prevaricator, especially from someone who claimed that he would restore honor and integrity to the White House.

Let’s see. Dingle’s got subpoenas ready. Leahy is writing them up. Waxman has already issued subpoenas pursuent to his committee hearings. Maybe John Farr knows something we don’t.

I have to say that was the most bellicose, belligerent display I’ve ever seen by a sitting president. He’s back in “dead or alive, bring it on” mode. Pretty shocking to throw down the gauntlet like that. If his intent was to embarrass Leahy, et al, he failed.

    ChrildrenofLir:

When did the Vice President lie to Congress?

  71. Bluedog49 Says:

Hard to believe it’s only been 8 years, but here’s a golden oldie:

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, July 26) — Top Republicans Sunday warned President Bill Clinton that refusing to honor independent counsel Ken Starr’s grand jury subpoena in the Monica Lewinsky case could have serious political consequences — including the possibility of impeachment.

“I think it would be disastrous. It is basically saying he is above the law, he doesn’t have to comply with the law,” said Senate Majority Whip Don Nickles of Oklahoma on NBC’s “Meet The Press.” “Everybody else in America has to comply with subpoenas (while) he’s saying he wouldn’t. … I don’t think that would be sustainable.”

  72. ChildrenofLir Says:

    Roger_roger

We won’t need a show trial. We have the facts. And we’ll get the rest of the facts when we subpoena and Bush is forced under threat of arrest to turn over the documents.

Then we’ll get the documents from Cheney’s Energy conferences in early 2001 when he and the cabal plotted to takeover Iraq using any ruse, to gain control of its oil. The treasonous plot will then be exposed.

  73. veritas Says:

The truth will prevail and the american people will know all the lurid details in due time. What we’ve already got in terms of the true details stacking up against this administration is certainly enough to bring about impeachment proceedings. Since when have we become a country to accept multiple lies from our commander in chief? Since when?

And therein lies the problem. It seems like real democracy is too much for the right to imagine. As long as ‘deal leader’ didn’t actually ‘break any laws’ - even to the point of making a mockery of the traditional process - then all is well. It’s funny for a person who doesn’t do nuance, Mr. Bush tries it out for size whenever it suits his own purpose.

Wacko Bush is scared and knows this is the big one. The Justice System requires all to testify under oath or take the 5th. Now Gonzales will be charged with lying under oath because he did lie. Bush now wants all to testify not under oath and behind closed doors as they can freely lie and keep the secrets of illegally firing DOJ lawyers away for the public. I hope Ted Wells is paying attention because the question is did Gonzales refuse to let Fitzgerald charge Rove of his crimes in the CIA case yet let Libby take the fall. I did notice that Fitzgerald 2005 job review was poor yet he was awarded Lawyer of the Year. Bush will be busted as with Nixon the United States is not a Dictatorship. Daddy Bush will have to come in and bail out his idiot son Georgie yet again.

  121. mrJJ Says:

Some crimes that a special prosecutor might one day look at:

    1. Misrepresentations to Congress. The relevant provision, 18 U.S.C. § 1505, is very broad. It is illegal to lie to Congress, and also to “impede” it in getting information. Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty indicated to Congress that the White House’s involvement in firing the United States attorneys was minimal, something that Justice Department e-mail messages suggest to be untrue.

    2. Calling the Prosecutors. As part of the Sarbanes-Oxley reforms, Congress passed an extremely broad obstruction of justice provision, 18 U.S.C. § 1512 (c), which applies to anyone who corruptly “obstructs, influences, or impedes any official proceeding, or attempts to do so,” including U.S. attorney investigations.

    3. Witness Tampering. 18 U.S.C. § 1512 (b) makes it illegal to intimidate Congressional witnesses. Michael Elston, Mr. McNulty’s chief of staff, contacted one of the fired attorneys, H. E. Cummins, and suggested, according to Mr. Cummins, that if he kept speaking out, there would be retaliation.

    4. Firing the Attorneys. United States attorneys can be fired whenever a president wants, but not, as § 1512 (c) puts it, to corruptly obstruct, influence, or impede an official proceeding.

Frankly, at this point I have no idea. But these criminals need to answer for this corruption, so it will all get figured out, won’t it?

This shit is illegal, Jake, and it’s really sweet to know that you’re ok with that, as long as they can get away with it. You’re just the kind of American that is ruining this country.

  129. veritas Says:

#103 I fear the truth about the sad facts surrounding the air of contamination of this administration - we do need to see the actual documents of Cheney’s 2001 Energy Conference because herein lies the crux of why we are in such a mess in this country today. That along with a reinvestigation of the myriad of inconsistencies surrounding 911 - the wargames which were taking place on 9/10 and 9/11 and why they were used to confuse the air traffic controllers, etc. There’s sooooo much yet to be revealed but, like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, we will dig for the truth, piece by piece until we understand how this all came about.

    From the Boston Globe, 2005:

But the agenda was different during the Clinton administration. The government reform panel alone, for example, issued 1,052 subpoenas related to investigations of the Clinton administration and the Democratic National Committee from 1997 to 2002, and only 11 subpoenas related to allegations of Republican abuse.
The panel received more than 2 million pages of documents and heard from 44 Clinton administration officials, including two White House chiefs of staff, according to statistics culled by Democratic staff on the Government Reform Committee.

Let’s just keep some of this in mind, Bush cultists, before you get your panties in a bunch about “executive privilege.”

Your Leichengehorsam to the Prez is admirable. The Leader’s Will shall prevail, whatever the reason? But of course.

  149. Ben Dover Says:

Thik about it. This is just a prelude to the beautiful legal situation that will occur on January 20, 2009, shortly after Al Gore and Wes Clark are sworn in. Agents of the United Nations will walk on the stage at the capitol, put Bush and Cheney in cuffs and leg irons, march them off the stage and out to Dulles where they will be flown overnight to Amsterdam. On arrival they will be transferred to Den Hague where they will await the first day of their War Crime trials.

Dumbya’s legal worries have only just begun (with apologies to the Carpenters).

I get giddy just thinking about it.

  150. veritas Says:

  151. Jake Says:

    Zooey and VerbalKint:

I’m not admitting anything they did was illegal, but even assuming it was (called a hypothetical where I come from), no one can arrest the President of the United States anyways. All you’ve got is impeachment — is that back “on the table” now?

  152. VerbalKint Says:

Congress should invite Fitgerald to conduct the questioning.

  153. Jake Says:

    veritas:

Who are you calling? Congressional offices are closed (or maybe you missed the time change?).

  154. ChildrenofLir Says:

If the President refuses the order to turn over documents based on subpoena - he can be arrested Jake.

This is what dopes like you don’t understand.

Nixon came to the brink of this point, and he resigned rather than push the COnstitutional crisis that would result. No President has ever refused the authority of the the Congress and the Supreme Court and refused to follow an order

Should Bush refuse, he would be subject to immediate impeachement. At some point, should he refuse to honor the decision of the Congress, whenever that point comes, he would have to be arrested.

This has never happened before. But you wouldn’t get that Jake. You’re too ignorant.

  155. Jake Says:

At least you agree that Bush cannot be arrested before then, right? I remember Pat Buchanan saying he would do the same thing to Clinton had he won too . . .

    > Comment by Jake

That’s right. So shortly before, he has to be relieved of his office. Is this so hard to understand?

  157. RUCerious Says:

Cmon Jakers you can take one minute to let us all know where you spent the Korean Conflict years, can’t you. I can’t imagine a patriot such as yourself not having served in the military…

  158. JPV Says:

WOO HOO!! Hopefully, now that the President has told Congress to go pound sand on subpoenas, we can really see what a bunch of impotent cowards they are . . .

  160. veritas Says:

#136 The scales have been tipped in such a direction of darkness that three honest presidents will not be able to undo the damage done by this cadre of criminals. This is unfortunate - but accurate. Their insidious poison has now permeated all aspects of american life, our image abroad, and our future success. They’be been spewing their poisonous reach into the DOJ in order to contaminate what should be an autonomous branch of this government. Prior to this new congress (of the people), they’d contaminated that branch of the tripod of our democracy which is precisely why the damage has reached unprecedented proportions. It will take a Herculean or superhuman to come in here and clean up the disaster they will leave in their wake.

  161. TripMaster Monkey Says:

Are you seriously suggesting that Chimpy and his gang can just ignore subpeonas? That they need not concern themselves with them, because no one can force them to conform to the rule of law?

Is this seriously what this country has come to?

Jake, if this is truly your position…if you truly support the idea of a band of sociopaths hijacking this country and declaring themselves above the law…then don’t be surprised at what comes next. If you deny the people legal means of redressing grievances, they will find another way.

This is America. It’s been a while since we fought for and won our freedom, but we still remember how to deal with tyrants.

Either dementia has set in or you are just the most ignorant and outlandishly stupid 75 year old on the planet. My guess is that you are just a farce trying to usurp the respect traditionally given to elders in order to lend credibility to your asinine assertions.

Imagine someone living through the heinousness of WWII era dictators and oppressive regimes only to later profess that the president of the United States has, and should have, dictatorial powers. If it weren’t such a serious subject it would actually be hilarious.

  181. Rosencrantz Says:

When will Democrats learn. Only Bush knows the facts and only Bush knows what is relevant and according to the law. If congress cares about getting to the bottom of this issue then they should let Bush decide what is relevant information and what isn’t, what is fact and what isn’t and they should just trust that he is telling the god’s honest truth all the time. There doesn’t need to be any swearing in.

If Bush thinks this is working then he’s dumber than even the biggest leftie could have imagined.

Indeed, I say to you, they have received their reward. But you, when you would pray, retire to your closet; and having shut the door, pray to your Father; and your Father, to whom, though he is unseen himself, nothing is secret, will recompense you.”

Actually, that’s just the start. On on impeachment, and conviction by the Senate, the President is removed from office. Once removed, he’s just a private citizen, and then subject to arrest and prosecution for any crimes committed. And once removed from office, he is no longer head of anything (including the DoJ and the military). He’s on his own then. Best solution would be a trip to some country that has no extradition treaty with the U.S. … and then ask for asylum.
