New FBI phone record rules could elimate paper trail.

The FBI, “which has been criticized for improperly gathering telephone records in terrorism cases,” has issued new rules for agents who want phone companies to voluntarily hand over their records. “The new instructions tell agents there is no need to follow up with national security letters or subpoenas,” the Washington Post reports. “The agents are also told that the new letter template is the preferred method in emergencies but that they may make requests orally, with no paperwork sent to phone companies.”

I think we should tell the FBI to stop investigating terrorist cases. They obviously are being to aggressive with those cases. It is much more important to protect our privacy over investigating some terrorists that are looking to destroy us. If we have to choose, we choose our privacy over our safety!!

  2. Fritz says:

Of course – no paper, no email trail = NO EVIDENCE!!!

    Brilliant.

I think we should tell you to lay off the straw men. No one’s advocating that, and you know it.

They obviously are being to aggressive with those cases.

These cases can be pursued quite effectively within the bounds of law, without unnecessarily removing all accountability.

It is much more important to protect our privacy over investigating some terrorists that are looking to destroy us.

    False choice…and you know it.

Stop it. You’re embarrassing yourself (again).

If we have to choose, we choose our privacy over our safety!!

We don’t, but even if we did…

Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

  5. Fritz says:

My main objection is not that wiretaps have to be performed, it’s that there is eroding accountability on agencies that perform them.

There will always be morons that insist that there should be NO accountability and that law enforcement should have a free hand to do whatever they want. Morons like that clearly hate America and the ideas that make America great.

#1 So tell me, how much is this “safety” gonna cost us? Is it going to come straight out of the register? Is Vinnie gonna come by on Thrusday to pick it up, or is it gonna be someone with a badge this time?

The idea of being safe is a lie. The world is a dangerous place, filled with everyone who has or ever will commit a crime.

    It’s a racket.

When this country was started, the opposite was true. Remember “Those who give up freedom for security deserve neither.” Privacy = freedom. If they’re telling us that we have to give up any sort of privacy simply because the government asks for it, then that’s just stupid.

The paper trail isn’t their to prohibit access. It’s there in case a mistake is made. When a mistake is made, we can go back and find out where the mistake occurred and correct it. Removing the paper trail is removing error checking. That’s just asking for trouble. Unless you’re one of those naive twits who thinks the government doesn’t make mistakes.

  12. Smack says:

This Administration seems bent on removing the ‘paper trail’ on everything. Leaving evidence laying around is bad for crooks. Just ask Nixon.

  18. Tom3 says:

The information obtained by the FBI in their ILLEGAL warrantless wiretap program led to 1 terrorism prosecution out of 143,700 individual investigations.

And now the FBI wants to make it easier for them to do more ILLEGAL warrantless wiretaps without even a paper trail to document exigent circumstances.

Did I mention this warrantless wiretapping is ILLEGAL?

  19. TripMaster Monkey says:

    Jake sez:

How long did it take them to find the Unibomber?

Almost 18 years (from very first bombing to capture).

Here’s a couple for you, Jake:

    - How many deaths was the Unabomber responsible for?

    - How long did it take them to find Osama bin Laden?

  20. Tom3 says:

Jeez, all the trolls are in here today, puking up their talking points.

They support illegal wiretapping. They support torture. They support treason.

The Repuke trolls are immoral, unethical and un-American. They have nothing to say and we really should ignore them.

But, I admit I cannot resist the temptation to bash them.

  23. Jake says:

Three preople were killed, and 23 wounded, by the Unabomber. Members of the U.S. government and private contractors are still actively searching for Osama too, so I cannot answer the second question phrased in the past tense.

  24. Xbot says:

    #16 Jake:

Osama bin Laden will be dead 18 years from 9/11, one way or another.

  26. Tom3 says:

Jake, the FBI could use 100% recycled paper.

  36. freeman says:

Jake and roger ,why do you hate our civil liberties ,and our constitution. What else must Americans part with to make you guys feel safer,?We’ve thrown away habeas corpus, the right to know what we’re being charged with , to face our accusers , the right to our privacy at home, work or at the library, the right to not have our homes searched in secret, the right to know what our government is doing, the right not to be tortured or rendered to secret imprisonment…all from an administration that has been caught lying straight faced to the American public on national TV and then exposed .
This is the same administration that has lied to the American people over the real reasons for it’s actions in Iraq which has caused the deaths of 650 000 people ,wounded and refugeed millions of innocents ,men women and children .An administration which gives no bid contracts to the corporations ,as in the vice presidents case , that they left to assume office and from whom they still receive moneys from while in office .A cabinet which includes a secretary of state who left a post on the board of a major oil company , which subsequently names an oil tanker after her.A cabinet whose main members wrote pre 911 that it was necessary to invade another country inorder to control oil and the developing world.
In addition Jake you don’t even claim to believe absolutely was ever elected to office legitimately.
Cowardess at the very least , treasonous by all appearances and so I ask again why do you hate our values as Americans and have you no respect for our institutions ?

  37. Jake says:

John Wilkes Booth and Lee Harvey Oswald both escaped capture several times as well.

Wrong. John Wilkes Booth was track from the Ford Theater to a tobacco that was set ablaze with him inside. When he came out he was shot in the neck. It took 12 days of chasing him, but he didn’t escape from being captured. When he was captured, he was dead from a gun shot wound to the neck.

Lee Harvey Oswald shot at Kennedy from the book depository in Dallas, then went home and grabbed a pistol. He was walking down the street where he was spotted by Officer JD Tippit, who Oswald ended up shooting. Oswald then entered the Texas Theater, where he was apprehended. He was eventually shot by Jack Ruby as he was being transported.

    Nice try at rewriting history.

    DEMOCRACY NOW !!!!!!!

  66. Spudge_Boy says:

So, again, how is shooting Tippet “not escaping from being captured”?

It was about 15 minutes. If you consider that “escaping capture” then we should have Osama bin Laden.

Or how about this one: John Wilkes Booth and Lee Harvey Oswald ran away from the scene of their crimes and evaded capture a little longer. Osama bin Laden was allowed to run away from the scene in Tora Bora by Bush.

  67. Jake says:

12:33 PM: Lee leaves the TSBD by the front door (presumed).

12:40 PM: Lee boards a bus to make his escape.

12:44 PM: Lee leaves the bus when it becomes bogged down in traffic.

12:48 PM: Lee hails a cab and asks to be taken to 500 North Beckley.

12:54 PM: Lee exits the cab in the 700 block of Beckley.

1:00 PM: Lee arrives on foot at his rooming house, where he retrieves his pistol.

1:03 PM: Lee leaves the rooming house.

1:16 PM: Lee shoots Officer J.D. Tippit and continues fleeing.

1:22 PM: Police broadcast a description of the suspect in the Tippit murder.

It’s a little hard when Bush gags ANYONE who has evidence against them……

Just look at Siebel Edmonds, the MOST gagged person in history.

She has already stated that “if a true investigation into 9/11 were to take place, there would be several high level officials going to prison”.

Why is Bush preventing her from talking???? What do they have to hide???? Why do they prevent other CIA/FBI officials from talking as well?????

Well Jake??? Why keep them from telling what they know about the facts if there is nothing to hide? Why have several people stated that the Bush administration did play a roll, either directly or indirectly?????

But you dare not answer these other than to say the typical Republican talking points……. Your not concerned about FACTS, your concerned about keeping your KING in power so he can start eliminating the bad “liberals”.

It truly scares the hell out of me. Living in freedom does come with some risks. I personally am willing to live with some added risks if it allows my freedom. The Dems are correct on this front. I congradulate them for fighting to protect our freedom and I hope they make their choices for Iraq based on what will ultimately create freedom for the poor folks of Iraq. Freedom is worth dying over so I certainly am not willing to simply hand over some of it for nothing. Anyone attempting to take away even an ounce of my or anyone else’s freedom would have a fight on their hands. It is completely wrong to take away someone’s freedom or by your actions/inactions hold someone back from freedom.

Our government should only make plans, laws, and war decisions based on what will add or enhance our freedom and the people of other countries freedom. It is criminal to wire tap our phones just like it should be criminal to make decisions on Iraq that would hurt the cause of freedom. I hope bush changes his ways on wire tapping and I hope the Dems continue to support the Iraq war so the Iraqis continue to have a chance at the Freedom they deserve.

#84 – you’re a pig. You invoke a man you apparently knew nothing about. You should hang your head in shame and go live with your beloved terrorist friends. You are not a patriotic American.

What I don’t like is how both parties only fake what they truly care about. The Dems are completely right on this issue because it endangers our Democracy and our Freedom. They problem is that the Dems do a 180 on other issues involving Freedom. The are happy to demand Pace not be allowed his Freedom of Speech. In their campaign, they were advocating that Iraqi’s don’t deserve a chance at freedom. Luckily they have changed their tune and are now fully supporting the Iraq war and are even promoting extending it. I truly hope the Dems can work with Bush to better clean up our mess and work with the Iraqis in their journey towards the freedom they so much deserve. The repugs are also equally to blame. They speak about freedom as being important and then decide to limit the freedom of future generations checkbooks by creating the largest federal budgets in the histry of the USA. Furthermore, the defend the idea of wire tapping Americans without warrents and even try to appoint new US attorney’s without the people’s elected reps getting a chance to say yes or no. These are all grave attempts to take away the Freedom of American citizens and take away the chance of freedom from other people’s of the world. Both parties need to wake up and realize they are simply “fighting these fights” for political gain. They seem to both do whatever is in their interests. It is amazing how neither party seems to consider what our best interests are. Furthermore, it is amazing we the people allow them to get away with it over and over even when they say one thing to get elected and then do the complete opposite. It proves how loyal each party is when you watch an antiwar blogger defend the Dems new prowar stance or when you see a profreedom conservative blogger defend Bush illegally wire tapping us and taking away a certain portion of their freedom. LONG LIVE POLTICS!!!!
