When President Bush nominated Dr. Elias Zerhouni to be the nation’s top medical researcher — director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) — he said that Zerhouni agreed to restrictions on embryonic cell stem research. 3/26/02:
Dr. Zerhouni shares my view that human life is precious, and should not be exploited or destroyed for the benefits of others. And he shares my view that the promise of ethically conducted medical research is limitless.
Zerhouni also reportedly “endorsed…in writing” a 2002 bill by Sen. Sam Brownback (R-KS) that would impose criminal penalties on all attempts to “derive embryonic stem cells for disease research.” Bush currently has threatened to veto legislation to increase funding for embryonic stem cell research.
But yesterday, in “a high-profile dissent from Bush administration policy,” Zerhouni reversed course and criticized the Bush administration’s restrictions. He stated that “American science will be better served — and the nation will be better served — if we let our scientists have access to more cell lines that they can study with the different methods that have emerged since 2001.” Watch it:
As AP notes, “Zerhouni’s comments appear to be his strongest yet in support of lifting President Bush’s 2001 ban that restricted government funding to research using only embryonic stem cell lines then in existence. There are just 21 such lines now in use.” Story Landis, the NIH official overseeing Bush’s restrictive embryonic stem cell policy, also recently suggested that the President’s approach is delaying life-saving cures. (More on recent medical breakthroughs involving embryonic stem cells HERE.)
Transcript:
HARKIN: Would scientists have a better chance of finding these new cures, new interventions for diseases if the current restrictions on embryonic stem cell research were lifted?
ZERHOUNI: I think the answer is yes. My experience has been this. In 2001, I think the policy that was put in place was the first one to fund embryonic stem cell research. I think NIH has done a great job in the first three years of that, in establishing infrastructure, funding new scientists which weren’t fundable before. Since 2004, I think it’s very clear, from the point of view of science, and what I have overseen, that these cell lines won’t be sufficient to do all the research we need to do. For the reasons that you mentioned, but the most important one is that these cell lines have exhibited instability from the genetic standpoint, and it’s not possible for me to see how we can continue the momentum of science in stem cell research with the cell lines that we have currently at NIH that can be funded.
So from my standpoint, it is clear today, that American science will be better served — and the nation will be better served — if we let our scientists have access to more cell lines that they can study with the different methods that have emerged since 2001, the different strategies that we now understand, which underlie the fundamental issue, which is nuclear programming, or DNA programming, or reprogramming. So the answer is yes.
Do it now!

I adore the far-right neo-con fanatic view that abortion is seen as a culture of death. Your "cause" sees abortion as murder and preaches about the sanctity of life; but once those crack babies, incest babies and children of rape are born, you and your ilk are suddenly nowhere to be found... and cries for funds for programs for children with FAS or retardation due to incest, as example, are outright refused. Odd, I think so. Perhaps they want to save those children and send them to the front lines in whatever "war on terror" mission the admin has cooked up, because they certainly won't send their own flesh and blood. That's a job for the minorities and non-white republicans, whom are of no help in furthering their propagan...err, I mean cause.
March 20th, 2007 at 1:17 pmI'm with Patrick1 on this one - it says right in the Bible not to conduct studies on embryonic stem cells! If god wanted us to live free of disease, he wouldn't be giving us these diseases!

Comment by not impressed with the U.S
Exactly!! Save the fetuses, but to indescriminately kill hundreds of thousands of innocent women and children over "oil" is perfectly ok.
It reminds me of a chorus:
March 20th, 2007 at 1:39 pm"Bow down before the one you serve
You're going to get what you deserve."
Republican neocon culture of death = "just numbers, commas and such."
March 20th, 2007 at 1:39 pmHe's not the only one breaking with Bush. Just watched on CSpan something which has shed light on the "conservative coalition against presidential power abuse" gathered by Bruce Fein (in Reagan cabinet) and they are moving forward as thou this attorney scandal as well as all of the other abuses enabled by The U.S. Patriot Act and put in place to enable Bush to abuse his presidential power has become a "constitutional crisis". He made it clear that the onus of responsibility to reign in these abuses of power by this administration is the patriotic responsibility of each american citizen. They've outlined a laundry list of how Bush abused the power of his office to trample the Bill of Rights, the Constitution, etc.
I see this new "conservative coalition" as a last-ditch attempt to save the GOP from itself. This constitutional crisis has united citizens regardless of political affiliation. No doubt that this new coalition is a way for the Republican party to remain relevant and to break with this twisted administration who have abused the power of the executive branch more heinously and more cavalierly than any other administration in history.
They emphasized the need for citizens to become knowledgeable about their constitutional rights and to overturn all of the insertions which have diluted them by this administration.
The CONSTITUTIONAL CRISIS has begun and will be in future history books, just like the attribution of Watergate to Nixon, as the beginning of the end of the Bush Regime.
He made it clear that the "true patriot" is the one fighting for the rights of the people and not the reverse. He made it clear that those in power will try to deceive and threaten one who stands up for his freedoms and attempt to intimidate by saying that it is the "unpatriotic" thing to do - to question one's rights. But, conversely, it's precisely those who argue for the unchecked power of the executive branch who are the disloyal patriots - the enemy within.
March 20th, 2007 at 1:47 pmI personally feel that embryonic stem cell research is very important. I also feel that the Federal government has no place investing tax payer money into this controversial research since it angers many Americans. We certainly should not force someone to pay taxes on research they feel is murdering human life. On the flip side, our government should make sure that embryonic stem cell research is perfectly legal for private industry and they should promote private industry doing this research and increasing it. It is the same situation with abortions. I personally feel that women should be allowed the right to choose, but I also feel we shouldn't be forced to pay for it. The government shouldn't ban it nor should they make it illegal but they simply shouldn't force Americans to pay for a practice they feel is murder. In the end, if you truly think it is murder, you would be forced to not pay your taxes. No sane person would ever be a part of something they believe to be murder. Furthermore, no sane person would force someone else to invest in a practice they believe is murder. Do you actually feel we should force someone to invest in something they believe to be murder? Honestly?
The only morally "controversial" tax payer funded practice should be our military as it is the primary function of our government to protect us. Without that function, we wouldn't need a Federal government.
March 20th, 2007 at 1:48 pmWhat hypocrisy to worry about killing a cluster of cells and not be at all concerned about the 3200 men and women who have been killed and the 28,000 maimed by this immoral war? What total stupidity and hypocrisy.
March 20th, 2007 at 1:48 pm"human life is precious, and should not be exploited or destroyed for the benefits of others"
Sometimes I wonder which human life Bush finds precious and what, exactly, defines his CIC-driven cost/benefit analysis... this whole Kabuki theater of "the culture of death" crap from the rightious is sickening. When a man pumps his fist in the air and proclaims "I feel good" prior to making a Presidential speech about going into a disastrous war of CHOICE that will wreck a whole country and kill thousands -- well, he's got some 'splainin to do. And those that support him better get off their fat asses and enlist so they can see their own gleeful culture of death up close and personal. And no, you don't get to wall off a whole city in order to keep your precious butt safe.

March 20th, 2007 at 1:50 pmBruce Fein's list of ten abuses of power could handily be used as the "10 impeachable offenses" of the Bush administration.
Impeachment is definitely in the air....but not before Rove, Cheney, and Bush get their day in court and perjure themselves. That will net not only impeachment but prison time as well.
March 20th, 2007 at 1:50 pmI am extremely happy to see Dr. Zerhouni step out in a more forceful manner to speak out in favor of this highly important research. I found it particularly savoring to read Dr. Zerhouni essentially pre-empt the religious right and their highly exaggerated arguments that adult stem cells have the same potential as embryonic stem cells.
From the L.A. Times article: "Studies claiming that adult stem cells have as much potential as embryonic stem cells 'do not hold scientific water,' Zerhouni said Monday."
Unfortunately, we need to look at reality here. Bush will veto this legislation again. The Senate looks more and more promising to have enough votes to override such a veto. However, the sad reality is that the House leadership has some serious arm-twisting to do.
March 20th, 2007 at 1:50 pm#33 I believe you're getting your books mixed up....it's not the bible that sits out thar' in yon outhouse and used as toilet paper....it's the Sears catalog! And this year's "Wish Book" isn't even published yet! Yikes!

March 20th, 2007 at 1:54 pmBush says "Dr. Zerhouni shares my view that human life is precious, and should not be exploited or destroyed for the benefits of others."
This from the man who has dealt out more death and destruction for the benefit of oil companies since the beginning of recorded history. This from the man who facilitates child slave labor and forced prostitution in the Marianas Islands so that the garments they make can carry the "Made in USA" label. This from the man who joked about Karla Fey Tucker last words before her death warrant was executed: "Oh please don't kill me!" This from the man who claimed Brownie was going a fantastic job while people drowned and died of thirst in a great American city. This from the man who lets the perpetrator of 9/11 run free while caught up in an occupation of a country that was no threat to us whatsoever. This from the man who claims God guides his hand, and this is how he proves it: by denying the research that can help living people on the grounds of his perverse sense of "morality."
Have you no shame, Mr. Bush? None whatsoever?

March 20th, 2007 at 2:23 pmIt is wrong for the Federal government to force people to pay for something they believe is murdering children. I think we should promote the private sector do the research. They are much more efficient anyways then a large bueracracy. We would also not be forcing anyone to pay for something they believe to be murder.
While I understand that sometimes the government need to force us to pay for things we find wrong, Stem cell research is not something of vital interest that the private sector wouldn't do. The only thing the government should force us to pay for are things we have to have that the private sector isn't capable of. Military is a good example as we certainly require it for our protection and we cannot rely on private industry for millions of troops and trillions of dollars. Stem Cell research is a "what", not a "need" in the regard that the research can just as well get done with private money so we don't have to force anyone into an insanely difficult spot. How could we force someone to pay for murder if it isn't something we can't get private industry to do?
March 20th, 2007 at 2:43 pmRoger is right!
March 20th, 2007 at 2:48 pmYes, he is. So, since 70% of America wants us out of Iraq, which murdering children, the Federal government should stop paying for it, with taxpayer money.
March 20th, 2007 at 3:03 pm#50 There is a major difference there actually. Stem Cell Research is something we can simply allow the private sector to do meaning those that want a part of it can and those that don't can choose not to. Military functions are different because the private sector cannot take over the war in Iraq which is part of our military. When you want that to stop, vote for someone who will stop it. I bet you are upset the Dems lied and now support the war?

And we've had the Bush Administration pour $750 Billion down a rathole and it angers "many Americans" for a war that nobody but 29 people want in Washington. Yet you're riled up that Stem Cell research might provide a solution for Parkinson's sufferers due to the source from embryos that infertile couples want to throw away. Your priorities aren't with the needs of people. No one suffers from stem cell research.
Can you say the same thing about this STINKING Bush War?
March 20th, 2007 at 3:26 pm#52 Again, this is very different. Stem Cell research is something we can allow private industry to do while War is something only the government can do. These arguement are not one in the same. If we could allow private industry to fight our wars and provide the troops, you would have an arguement. Stem Cell research can easil be accomplished by industry which means we don't have to have the government do it, thus we shouldn't since it angers many. I hope you see my logic here as its very clear.

Roger, are you actually THAT naive? Have you been paying attention AT ALL?? Do you know how many contractors are in Iraq at this very moment? Upwards of 100,000. Two-thirds as much as our actual # of soldiers performing activities that until the Neo-Nazis came along were performed by the American military. The private sector has ALREADY taken over most logistic functions of this war, including the un-metered theft of millions of $$$$ each day of Iraqi oil. All with no oversight or consequences. Your argument holds no validity. Additionally, no Democrat I know of (other than Lieberman, who is an "Independant") SUPPORTS this war. Each and every Democrat in congress supports ending this disaster. THAT'S supporting the troops - getting them out of your "hero's" meat-grinder. Perhaps if you opened your mind once in awile, instead of your bible, you would come to the same "Christian" conclusion.

Somebody tell this clown there are other problems in the NIH too, like Lyme Disease patients getting their care cut off regardless of whether or not they are well at the 60 day mark. People, Lyme is a spirochete and it looks like Tuskegee part two is being allowed as well these days
March 20th, 2007 at 5:50 pm#63 Please study a bit sir. Your Dems are the ones that just extended this war. Your dems are the ones that just approved over $100 billion to support Iraq. These are votes they could have said no to and ended this war. I understand that they go on TV and proclaim how against this war they are, but their votes speak much differently. Furthermore, the contractors in Iraq are only there because of our government. They still have no authority, nor should they ever, to wage war based on their own decision. Stem cell research is very different. the Private sector has the authority to do the research when and how they want. This is the huge difference between to the. There is no link at all.
Again, I would personally fight very hard against government if they tried to pass a law banning private companies from this type of research as it is very important medically. I am equally against the government forcing this stuff on Americans when they don't need to. What is the point when many Americans feel that it murders children? The answer is there is no point when we have a perfectly good substitute in the private sector.

oh yeah, i forgot how scientists are all loaded and can do whatever research they want.
It's called a grant.
Also, why are "we" funding NASA? It doesn't say anywhere in the bible about space exploration and other worlds. does it? That goes against the Bible, right?
While we get pushed around by the religious right, America will continue to fall back into the stone ages. i think that is what the r.r. want.
March 20th, 2007 at 7:44 pm#68 Stem cell research isn't done by some individual scientist for fun. The private sector would love to find new cures and medications derived from this research as we are talking big money here. Phizer and many others are already investing much more then the government has ever proposed for it. You don't think stem cell research is currently not happening in the private sector, do you? THe government, even if it added many millions to its current research, wouldn't even scratch 1% of the investment already being made by private companies. This is the reason it is completely wrong for the government to step in. We already have a great source for this research which won't force anyone to pay for it.
Lastly, what does NASA have to do with this? No one is morally against NASA as no one believes NASA's research is killing children. I never talked about the bible at all either as it isn't part of the discussion. I talked about people's moral beliefs which is much different.
I hope I am aruging this with a sane person. You sound a little out there as you aren't even making sense. Nasa has nothing to do with Stem Cell research. One people are morally against and it can be done by the private sector. The other one morals don't apply and can't be done at that level from the private sector.

March 21st, 2007 at 10:26 am#73 How you fail to read my posts and understand them is beyond me. I have no problem with this research. I was simply stating that is should be done, LIKE IT ALREADY IS, by the private sector. We should certainly allow the private sector access to an unused embryos from fert. clinics. Again, we are then talking about 2 private companies doing a private business transaction. Why does this crowd have a problem with the research being done this way? Private industry already invests billions more then the government ever planned to. Allowing private industry to do this research eliminates this whole debate. This research is looked at as murder by some (NOT ME). Since we have a valid solution that would allow for these people to not be forced into paying for it, we should go that route. I still have yet to see a valid arguement showing how it is vital we force people to pay for it when we don't have to. Are there any posters left on this post that have anything valuable to add.
