The U.S. Attorney document gap.

By Nico Pitney on Mar 20th, 2007 at 9:58 pm

The U.S. Attorney document gap.»

“In DOJ documents that were publicly posted by the House Judiciary Committee, there is a gap from mid-November to early December in e-mails and other memos, which was a critical period as the White House and Justice Department reviewed, then approved, which U.S. attorneys would be fired while also developing a political and communications strategy for countering any fallout from the firings.”

UPDATE: McClatchy and the AP reprint some noteworthy emails from the documents.

Is the gap 18 minutes long by chance?

  2. Fritz Says:

Of course there’s a gap. Wouldn’t want anybody to find out any truth…

  3. DrSinker Says:

The DOJ and WH are incompetent, but they’re not stupid. I suspect this is precisely the same period of time they’ll try to prevent having anyone testify under oath to Congress about.

The irony here is, if they just came out and told the truth, they’d get shelled for it, but nowhere near as much as what they’re going through now.

  4. RemoveBush Says:

Is ANYONE actually surprised that the Criminal-In-Cheif did not provide all the information to the Congress?????

Is he trying to re-live the days of the Iraq war push?????

Can we just draw names for the firing squad and get it over with already?

  5. Xbot Says:

I don’t even need to draw the connection the Nixon. I like this article. It draws the connection to evil past incidences by itself. Most of Bush’s stuff requires us to guide the line…

    Watergate tapes.

  11. firehead Says:

Nothing to see here libs. Move on and get a life. Investingating Bush will do the country no good. In fact, we might lose the war in Iraq if you distract the President.

    Was it 18 minutes long?

    Cheers,

    Firehead,

Did you get the chair massage from the people in the mall?

  14. chimpeach Says:

    #9 ForTruth

Rosemary Woods, Nixon’s secretary, claimed to be responsible for an 18 minute gap in a key portion of one of the Watergate tapes. Said she accidentally leaned on the mute button or something.

  15. DrSinker Says:

Congress does need to tread lightly here. Most people aren’t terribly upset about this. If they drag it out for even a few more weeks, folks are going to wonder why they’re wasting all this time.

  16. Adolph Hitler Says:

you heard firehead. Let’s move on and get this Nationalsozialisten going.

  19. ForTruth Says:

    Thank you Chimpeach for that.

  20. monkeyboy Says:

The “18 minute gap” comment is referencing the Watergate Tapes. We already had a new version of The Saturday Night Massacre with Carol Lam, and now an 18 minute gap. Lets hope for an impeachment proceeding too!

  22. KRank Says:

That firehead — what a satirist!

It takes a special ear for language to be able to pick up on the distinctive cadence and obliviousness of the wingnut mentality, and then take it that extra mile into absurdity. Firehead does this consistently.

Firehead, I salute you! Keep up the great comedy!

  23. White Punks on Dope Says:

Hmm. I’ve seen this movie before. Back in 1974 I believe.

  24. scared shitless Says:

you guys have to stop this! If we get distracted then the terrorists will come over here and we will all be speaking, um, speaking, um, well, speaking something other than english!

  25. dlet Says:

In fact, we might lose the war in Iraq if you distract the President.
    Comment by firehead

Then nobody better throw a ball of yarn into the Oval Office.

Who is advising the White House to release all these documents? I forgot his name. There is an article in Vanity Fair that goes into this guy’s history back to Nixon. Could it be he is advising the White House to release just enough to hang themselves like a true American would in order to protect America. He was around to advise Noxon to do what he did when he got into a pickle also. Insider? Hmmm? Leading villianous idiots to their own slaughter?

    #21 - avert,

What percentage of the public do you think are really up in arms about this???

One poll I saw only had 1/3 believing Gonzo should resign. That’s not overwhelming.

  29. untruthiness Says:

I saw a poll that showed 62% think Gonzo should resign. And then on MSNBC they said only 42% were concerned. But then again, how were these polls worded?

  32. avert Says:

DrSinker, that is probably true, but how many people actually pay attention to politics? Virtually nobody where I work even knows who Alberto Gonsalez is.

  33. avert Says:

So I take my message back. You are probably correct that it could all be forgotten quickly.

  34. dlet Says:

Fred F. Fielding. That’s the guy. Does anyone have any opinion on this guy. He took over Miers’ position and from what I read he is the only White House Staff Member that is a solid D.C.er and not one of his Texas “yes sir boss” guys.

Clearing brush at the pig farm will surely solve the problem, right farthead? Maybe he should go to latin America again, that will surely win the war, maybe take a flying leap off a Segway, or perhaps crash on his mountainbike?

    What do you think farthead?

  36. Farthead Says:

rSinker, that is probably true, but how many people actually pay attention to politics? Virtually nobody where I work even knows who Alberto Gonsalez is. Comment by avert

I find that pretty hard to believe after all Ashcroft pretty much quit after asked to sign off on some wiretap stuff [Ashcroft was perhaps smarter than Alberto [amazing]] and and Alberto was his replacement,,,then again people are more concerned with Idle American.

  37. SouthWest Bob Says:

    Comment by chimpeach

Jeeze, you guys are all really young, aren’t you? There was a famous photo of Woods demonstrating how she could have “accidentally” deleted the critical 18 minutes while she was transcribing the tape. The subsequent contortions necessary to do that while answering the phone looked like an ad for Twister.

Y’all do know what Twister is, right? Or have I aged myself yet again.

  41. katy Says:

I hate that when it happens. My first thought was the 18 minute gap in the Nixon tapes. Oy.

  43. RemoveBush Says:

Here is what I wrote on Kucinich’s site…..

I have not figured out why this conversation has taken so long….

Here is just a few of the items that I KNOW are crimes that warrant Impeachment.

    1) Neglegant for the murder of 3000 Americans. Possibly a participant into the actual events of the day. Either they Made it happen on purpose (MIHOP), or they Let it happen on purpose (LIHOP). How can a terrorist organization threaten Air Force One using Coded language??? AF1 was threatened by coded language that day, so to me that was a warning that Bush better just sit back and do nothing which makes that a crime in it’s self. It also shows that some faction of our government was involved and Bush did not do anything about that. (TREASON)

    2) Fabrication of information presented to the Congress! Decieving Congress is a Felony crime! This ALONE is enough to Impeach!

    3) Redirecting funds authorized for Afganistan for pre Iraq combat. Only the Congress can distribut funds, and the diverting of funds was a FEDERAL Crime.

    4) Warrant less Wiretapping! Bush admitted on TV that he authorized it. In one case, months before the information was released to the public, he was stating that “we always get a warrant”. Then when the information came out it was “FISA was written in 1978….. this is 200x”. Clear and DIRECT admission that he broke the law out right and without regard for the law.

    5) Conspiring to spy on Americans before 9/11. Documents revealed from the lawsuit against AT&T show that Bush started this path only 3 weeks into his office. Which shows the fact that this was PLANNED long before the act, which makes it a conspiracy against the people of the US. And with this spying on Americans already in full swing before 9/11, Bush could not prevent 9/11 because his focus was not on terrorists but rather his political enemies. (Another FELONY).

    6) Outing of a NOC. Effectively destroying YEARS of tax payers dollars and who knows how many operatives in the field. The public may never know if any of those agents have been captured, torchered, or killed after the outing.

    7) Obstruction of justice. Bush prevented the investigation from moving forward by ensuring that the attorney did not get the information needed to perform the investigation. He destroyed emails and other documents that could have been used to determine in a more reasonable time frame who actually destroyed an intelligence network.

I could go on, but I believe there has been more than enough crimes committed by this administration to have them placed in jail years ago. I doubt that America would hickup one bit if the Congress Impeached this Criminal and showed by FACTS what has been going on without a shadow of a doubt.

I ENCOURAGE the Congress to File Article of Impeachment Immeadiatly….. I have been writting to Congress for years, and have even recently written to Pelosi and my rep. Carl Levin in the senate to forward my demand to Pelosi.

    DO IT NOW!

  44. EvilPoet Says:

The similarities are striking, aren’t they? It’s like “deja vu all over again.”

“Even after Richard Nixon’s secret war in Cambodia became known, the president persisted in deception. “Publicly, we say one thing,” he told aides. “Actually, we do another.” Newly declassified documents from the Nixon years shed light on the Vietnam War, the struggle with the Soviet Union for global influence and a president who tried not to let public and congressional opinion get in his way.” -The Associated Press, 11/16/2005

Yes, it’s best not to pursue charges of corruption and obstruction of federal investigations if the public isn’t leading the way. In fact, it’s best not to attempt anything worthwhile if the public isn’t really fired up about it.

With all due respect, I think your instincts are way off the mark on this one.
