Gonzales resignation watch.

Gonzales resignation watch.

From The Politico:

President Bush on Tuesday called Gonzales, offering a public show of support. And White House press secretary Tony Snow said that news reports about a search for a replacement were “flat false.”

But people involved in the process to sound out potential replacements for Gonzales said they had not talked to Snow. A GOP loyalist close to the White House said the process went on ice after Bush made his call to Gonzales. “They were reaching out,” the operative said. “Now, we’re in lockdown. We’re just waiting. They’ve reached out to everyone they need to reach out to and are waiting to get a ‘yes’ from someone.”

Newsweek:

Bush attempted to belay that talk earlier Tuesday, when, just minutes after arriving at the Oval Office for his usual round of morning briefings, he placed a call to Gonzales, his old friend from Texas, to let the attorney general know that his job was not on the line. But even some alumni of the Bush White House say that call means little for Gonzales’s job security. True, Bush is not likely to fire Gonzales. But these former aides say they expect Gonzales to offer up his own resignation, just as former Defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld did after the GOP lost the midterm elections. (That move, you might recall, followed closely on the heels of a public expression of Bush’s support for Rumsfeld.)

Keep holding on, Gonzo. We want to see Rove sweat and squirm during sworn testimony…though I doubt that it will get that far.

    If it doesn’t…

Bye-bye Gonzo! Bye-bye! Don’t let the door hit you in the butt on the way out!

  3. CONservative says:

Can we just impeach this whole criminal cabal already??

  4. Briseadh na Faire says:

Speaking of impeachment…Dennis Kucinich is asking Americans if we will support a call for impeachment:

  5. Briseadh na Faire says:

What’s the odds he’ll resign just before Rove has to testify under oath?

  6. Heterodoxy says:

When was the last accalade, success, truimph from any of the water carrying trolls here for this HISTORICAL COLLOSSAL FAILURE? When did your last moral fiber die and realize you can no longer defend the Failure in Chief? Have you yet realized your a personal failure when you place person before country, pride before results, ideology before credibility and accountability? The water keeps getting heavier and you keep lapping up the Rape-Public-Can paste.

  7. Fritz says:

    CONservative:

It’ll never happen. I CAN dream about it though…

What’s going on now is almost as good as impeachment…

    well, it’s hugely entertaining, anyway…

  8. Briseadh na Faire says:

By the way, I don’t know if anybody’s mentioned it, but, thank you, TP for solving the “server problems” of a few weeks ago. It’s nice to not have to deal with the incredible disappearing/reappearing posts finally.

  9. Goehl says:

My best guess is that Gonzales will cease to be AG Friday – hoping this will be played down by the weekend news.

  10. Fritz says:

    Briseadh na Faire:

I think he’ll resign before Rove will have to testify, unfortunately.

  11. Gregor Samsa says:

To Jake, Patrick1, Roger*2, and the other Bush cult followers; let me save you the trouble of typing your nonsense -here:

Our Fearless Leader and His men are accountable to no one. Why do you refuse to accept that fact?

You liberals will bring about the end of our great democracy.

  12. Dreary Urbanite says:

Fitz – I don’t think that Gonzo’s resignation will get Karl off the hook. These people are our public servants and we should expect nothing less than the truth.

  13. Goehl says:

    #3 Briseadh na Faire

Excellent video.. Kucinich has always been my favorite as he is so right on with the issues.

  14. Fritz says:

Dreary Urbanite: I absolutely agree with you. We have been too long without accountability from this administration, but I believe that political expediency will win in the end. I don’t think that Congress would pursue Rove beyond Gonzo’s resignation.

  15. Fritz says:

I do hope I’m wrong, as I would love to see the bastids squirm and whine…

    Comment by Fritz

Entertaining but ultimately useless if they are allowed to get away with it…sigh

  17. CONservative says:

    To Jake, Patrick1, Roger*2, and the other Bush cult followers;

They ARE a cult, aren’t they? They have to be, they can’t be THAT delusional by CHOICE can they?

  18. Fritz says:

CONservative: Those that you mention are part of the “30 Per Centers” – their devotion to Bush is the same as religious fervor. They don’t want or need facts – all they have and need is faith.

Their refusal to see facts and educate themselves is a denial of the principles that made America great. I’m sure you know this, but these people actually hate America and the ideas upon which America was founded. Further, they are cowards.

  19. Jay Randal says:

Gonzales is a pathetic Bush butt kisser stooge, because he is expected to willingly fall on his sword to protect Dubya. Alberto is a putrid lowlife.

  20. Jackie Rawlings says:

Here’s what Bush had to say when the press asked if Rummy was going to be fired.
“President Bush sent a powerful message of support Tuesday for embattled friend Donald Rumsfelt, calling his longtime friend to express unwavering support in the face of calls for his resignation.

Here’s what Bush had to say when the press asked if Gonzales was going to be fired.
“President Bush sent a powerful message of support Tuesday for embattled Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, calling his longtime friend to express unwavering support in the face of calls for his resignation.

Now notice how Bush really supports his friends it’s all lip service and stalling for a replacement. If you don’t believe this I ask you has Bush ever lied before? Didn’t Bush say Rummy would be in his Administration till the end and where is Rummy now? Look for Gonzales to be gone and Bush will say Al I really didn’t know him that well.

  21. hterrya says:

I don’t need a Gonzales Resignation Watch. I need a Rove/Miers Subpoena Watch! And I need it now!

If they (the Dems) can get them to testify (i.e., LIE) under oath, they can get them on perjury like they did Scooter-Booter!

  22. Paul in LA says:

Once they switched from evasion to lies, you knew he was gone. They knew he was out, and now they’re back to outright lying — Bushco’s Eternal Backup Plan.

“Abu Gonzales? Was he ever an Attorney? Do tell!” — Tony Snow, May 2007

“I will never fire Edwin Meese.” — The Incredible Shrinking Nixon

  23. TR says:

Does Newsweek feel like it gains something by its revisionist news? It was clear at the time that Rumsfeld was fired and was surprised by it. I know that a resignation is generally a euphemism for firing in DC, but that one was so transparent that it was mostly reported as firing.

But its no surprise from Newsweek. Meacham was on Imus and made a comment about his liberal friends “whining” about Bush, and followed it with an incomprehensible comment about mailing a check (still looking for a transcript). Yup, no legit reasons to complain. We’re just a bunch of crybabies for wanting the president to tell the truth and quit politicizing crap.

  24. AboveTheClouds says:

These Republican Presidential candidates must be just overjoyed over this Gonzales-Rove scandal–they get to spend all their air time defending these hacks instead of explaining to Americans how they are the right people to fix the mess they created.

  25. DDB says:

    Heck of a job Gonzo!

  26. genrikh yagoda says:

But no-one dares to telll–Yes Gonzo is a long time pal of Bush–Wrong!
A lawyer that got paid well,in that he was succesful in helping Bush get-off drunken driving charges and oh yes ,that rape charge of that young black girl. Not yet bad enough, Hummmmmmm !, she was found dead 3 hrs after filing rape charges. No investagation–now that is good Lawyering–mean lying !

  27. wmd says:

    Heck of a Job Gonzie

perhapes Bush can also come out an say that this has been the best attorny general the US has ever had.

  28. Pete Bogs says:

Bush will “reluctantly” accept a Gonzo resignation, then blame liberals and the media for his demise… he will not take the man’s misdeeds into consideration…

  29. Manuel says:

Yep, Bush governs pretty much like the caesars in Rome, backstabbing his aides.

  30. Keith H. says:

I guess I’m not seeing how ginsoo’s resignation will keep the Turdblossum from testifying.
That would seem to suggest that the hearings would be
to ‘prove that albert should lose his job’?
I would think that there is a whole lot more to it than that.

  31. Roger_Roger says:

Pretty sad how the Dems simply won’t allow minorities in positions of power. If Bush wants the Dems to back down, he would be best served firing Gonzo and Rice and replacing them with crusty old white men. The Dems are still working on potentially appointing a minority to one of these high appointments. They are hoping they will find the nerve to do it in the next 10-20 years. Until then, they find it unfair that the repugs could already be treating minorities with equality. The Dems currently think of minorities are simply votes and nothing more. Pretty sad, but since the Dems now control power, the repugs need to play along. I personally think the Dems should simply follow suit and start treating minorities as equals like the repugs do instead of constantly demanding the repugs not hire them. Come on Dems, maybe you should think about hiring a few minorities to positions of power. I mean, these folks have giving you their vote for years. You still leave them in poverty and you still won’t allow them to power positions. Are you also planning on nominating some old crusty white women or man when you have a winning canidate that happens to be black?

  32. Jay Randal says:

Roger lol > nobody is against Gonzales because he is Hispanic. We want him to resign because he is a criminal who kisses Bush’s butt.

  33. R says:

Why are you even wasting our time with an ambiguous thread like this? Maybe he will? Maybe he won’t?
Suffice it to say the WH will deny there’s a problem until the limp dick Gonzo walks out into the rose garden hand in hand with Chimpy. Then, the two can gaze tearfully into each other’s eyes and say thier sad farewells to each other. -sniffle-

  34. VerbalKint says:

RR, it is presumptuous, to say the least, to infer that Democrats are against Gonzales because he is Hispanic. Might it instead have something to do with the fact that Gonzales has abused his authority and possibly broken the law?

    Stupid, RR. Very, very stupid.

  35. Gary C says:

Gee, when does Gonzo get the medal of freedom for backing the use of Bush’s torture chambers in all those forign countries (including Cuba)?

  36. Raymond Funamoto says:

    Alberto VO5 GONE-zales—–HERE Today, GONE-ZO Tomorrow!!!!!
This SWARMY, UNCTUOUS, SLIMY PIPSQUEAK IS JUST LIKE Uriah Heep(tm) in Dicken’s DAVID COPPERFIELD(tm)—-”A HEAP(Heep) OF INIQUITY”AND IS A LYING, OBFUSCATING, PREVARICATING, OBSTRUCTING, LAWLESS LITTLE PIECE OF CALUMNY AND INNUENDO THAT SHOULD BE BEATEN TO WITHIN AN INCH OF HIS MISERABLE LIFE BY THE Mr. Micawber LOOK-ALIKE Senator Patrick Leahy and Representative John Conyers FOR DARING TO LIE AND CONCEAL THE TRUTH FROM THE AMERICAN PEOPLE AND MAKING THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT INTO THE “IN-JUSTICE DEPARTMENT”!!!!!! GO GET HIM, BOYS!!!!!!!
