From the New York Times:
In his first weeks as defense secretary, Robert M. Gates repeatedly argued that the detention facility at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, had become so tainted abroad that legal proceedings at Guantánamo would be viewed as illegitimate, according to senior administration officials. He told President Bush and others that it should be shut down as quickly as possible. [...]
Mr. Gates’s arguments were rejected after Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales and some other government lawyers expressed strong objections to moving detainees to the United States, a stance that was backed by the office of Vice President Dick Cheney, administration officials said.
As Mr. Gates was making his case, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice joined him in urging that the detention facility be shut down, administration officials said. But the high-level discussions about closing Guantánamo came to a halt after Mr. Bush rejected the approach.
We need to shut down Gitmo. Here’s how to do it.
I vacationed at Club Gitmo once… Sigh… Good times…
March 22nd, 2007 at 10:52 pmI was wondering when Cheney would crawl out from under his rock again–should have known it would have continued with more bad decisions by the neocon wing of the Bush White House. I really don’t think they even give a damn.
Almost all of Bush’s cabinet was PNAC.
PNAC pushed exploiting the position of the US being the world’s Hegemon.
Read the site, their plan is for a Pan-Americana World Empire.
Only theyhave made such a f*cked up mess of it.
The whole thing reads like bad cartoon script of Pinky and the Brain with an Orwellian twist, in a very bloody, demented way.

No doubt about it!
When you consider just how willing they were to send 3,000 Americans to their deaths, not to mention hundreds of thousands of Iraqis all over total lies, it’s not much of a stretch to imagine them allowing the planes to hit the Twin Towers and the Pentagon to give them the “Pearl Harbor like event” they needed to set the whole insane plan in motion.
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:41 pmWayne: I can’t understand why “conservatives” simply stand by and cheer on Cheney, Rove, Rumsfeld and the neocons as they destroy the Republican Party. March 22nd, 2007 at 11:54 pmI never believed him when he said it, but on June 14, 2006, W said he would like to close Gitmo. From whitehouse.gov:
“I’d like to close Guantanamo, but I also recognize that we’re holding some people that are darn dangerous, and that we better have a plan to deal with them in our courts. And the best way to handle — in my judgment, handle these types of people is through our military courts. And that’s why we’re waiting on the Supreme Court to make a decision.
Part of closing Guantanamo is to send some folks back home, like we’ve been doing. And the State Department is in the process of encouraging countries to take the folks back. Of course, sometimes we get criticized for sending some people out of Guantanamo back to their home country because of the nature of the home country.”
Would it be all right for Cuba to have a big chunk of the USA to use as a military base and illegal prison for over one hundred years? I don’t think so.

Secret Prisons & ‘Alternative’ Interrogation
Bush’s Christian War on Islamofascism
Austin Cline, Agnosticism /Atheism Blog
September 7, 2006
George W. Bush says that Jesus is his favorite philosopher. George W. Bush says that God called him to lead America. Bush has reportedly said that God told him to strike at Afghanistan and Iraq. He is seen as owing his elections as president to the votes of conservative evangelical Christians. Bush leads a political party which regularly puts the religious interests of conservative evangelical Christians above the general interests of the public as a whole. Republican Party platforms regularly proclaim that America is a “Christian Nation†and call for inserting Christian doctrine, morals, and policies into public laws.
Bush is the most overtly “Christian†president America has had in a long time. He leads the most overtly “Christian†political party on the scene and they both pursue overtly Christian agendas, policies, and values. What are the fruits of America’s ongoing experiment with Christian government?
George W. Bush is responsible for creating secret prisons in foreign countries where people can be subjected to “alternative†interrogation methods outside the review or supervision of any international agencies. Bush is responsible for the creation of a concentration camp in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where prisoners can be detained and interrogated without charges or trial. He is responsible for the use of “aggressive†treatment of prisoners which qualify as torture under all legal and moral codes, but which he denies is “real†torture so long as no one dies and there are no permanent injuries. He is responsible for the use of attack dogs and mock executions to intimidate prisoners.
George W. Bush has asserted the authority to detain and imprison American citizens without charge, without trial, without access to family, and without access to legal counsel. He is responsible for shutting American citizens out of the nation without charge and without trial. Bush has asserted the power to spy on American citizens without charge and without court oversight. He launched an invasion of a foreign country on false and constantly shifting pretenses. He is responsible for people being handed over to foreign governments known to use torture in interrogations.
Obviously not all Christians agree with these developments, but George W. Bush’s very vocal Christian supporters have either not objected or, even worse, have endorsed these policies.

For you I release this whisper to the winds:
March 23rd, 2007 at 12:38 amMay the consequences of the hate and lies you loose into the world come back to you 10 fold.
I propose that Guantanamo be set aside as a permanent residence for Bush and Company after they leave office.
Since they claim no one there was ever mistreated, they will be subjected to the same treatment they afforded other residents.
The court rooms are already built, suitable for International Tribunals for War Crimes. And the rules of those Tribunals should be modeled after Bush’s Military Commissions Act.
Should they become sick or injured, they should be treated to the same level of treatment as our military personnel received at Walter Reed.
After the last of them has left this mortal realm, Guantanamo should be preserved, as an American version of Auschwitz; a permanent reminder of our inhumanity towards the rest of the world.
March 23rd, 2007 at 12:45 amI know this had to have been said before but isn’t it so ironic that Gitmo is in Cuba and the US has the audacity to accuse Cuba of State sponsored terrorism and Bolton said it was part of the axis of evil and Bush said it was an outpost of tyranny. Words and actions. I’ll take actions as a way of determining who is evil and who is not. This admin speaks good words but acts as evil if not worse as those they accuse
March 23rd, 2007 at 12:46 amWayne –
Namaste.
March 23rd, 2007 at 12:48 amWhen people in this board talked about the need to close Guantanamo, the trolls called them traitors, appeasers, said the move would only embolden the terrorists, and called that place an “essential tool” in the “global war on terror”.
Turns out, Sec Gates -handpicked by the Dear (mis)Leader himself- has advocated the very same course action the Bush cultists have slammed time and again.
Will the Bush cultists call Sec Gates a traitor and a terrorist appeaser, or will the cognitive dissonance simply make their heads explode?
Stay tuned…
March 23rd, 2007 at 1:04 amI have had a hell of a lot of Christian teachings in my life and I came to the conclusion that Jesus was way to the left of liberalism. He and his disciples were downright communistic. For instance, they would be opposed to the Walton family having $95 billion while 48 million Americans do not even have healthcare.
They were what conservatives would call “soft on crime” to the extreme.
They were pacifists to the extreme.
They preached against taking up the sword even against the Roman empire’s occupation of Palestine.
I consider Daniel and Phillip Berrigan true Christians.

Proof of US orchestration of death squads’ killings in Iraq
The full details of Professor Samarree’s story and a detailed account of the US-built Iraqi intelligence apparatus are contained in the article Ghosts of Jadiriyah , published by the B Russell s Tribunal .
In fact, not only does Mr Abid describe the ongoing tortures that he was repeatedly subjected to after the US intervention, as well as describing the tortures that continued to be inflicted on fellow inmates, including the use of Black and Decker drills and other power tools (Mr Abid names eight fellow detainees who died from their injuries), but Mr Abid states that “American troops have visited the prison many times and therefore cannot deny the existence of such a prison.â€

Whenever I seriously consider leaving this country, I can always count on neocon apologist mouth-breathers like Stubain to show up and graphically demonstrate why that is not an option.
Our Founding Fathers fought and died so that we may be free. Sickened though we may be by the cabal of neocon thugs that have hijacked our country, leaving would be a poor way to repay the honorable men and women that labored so hard to create this once-great nation.
Thank you, Stubain, by demonstrating through your inane drivel exactly what is at stake here. I will not leave this nation to your ilk. I will continue to fight to remove the ursupers from power and hold them accountable for their crimes.
And remember, Stubain, when that day comes, you’ll find your apologist ass against the wall with the rest of them.
For a sniveling little toad like you to presume to call me ‘Anti-American’ is laughable. Perhaps if you had spelled it ‘Anti-Amerikan‘, you’d be correct, but as it stands, your endorsement of this administration, which ranks among mankind’s most awful crimes, speaks volumes about your patriotism.
(Note: You’re probably confused by my assertion that you are unpatriotic. Rest assured, however, it is true…jingoism, however fervent, is not a substitute for patriotism, and jingoism is all you have to offer.)
As for you calling me a ‘coward’, I’d really like to see you say that to my face…not that I’d think you’d ever have the chutzpah. It’s much easier to sling invective anonymously from your mom’s basement, isn’t it? ^_^

Yes, Gitmo an abomination, an affront to due process and makes the United States a hypocritical nation, but it just goes to show how far down we’ve slid when we can matter-or-factly mention secret prisons and still call ourselves a nation of laws without even recognizing just how ridiculous this notion is.
I hope I live long enough to see those that have taken this nation into the fascist cesspool it has become held accountable for all that they have done.
March 23rd, 2007 at 10:02 amThere’s more than “meets the eye” in Cheney’s insistence that Guantanamo remain operational. Seldom published is the fact that a new retention facility at Guantanamo, designated Camp 6, was built for $37 million by KBR, a subsidiary of …you guessed it…Halliburton (another unbid contract). Wherever there is blood and human suffering, Cheney’s butt buddies at Halliburton are right there to scoop up profits.
They are monsters, one and all… in an International Military Tribunal trial they’d be found guilty of “Crimes Against Humanity”, and would be summarily executed.
March 23rd, 2007 at 10:08 amTripMaster Monkey in post 17 said that firehead was “stupid†for post 11 but TMM said sh/she was too tired to say why. Yatta yatta yatta.

Jesus christ, you’re stupid.
March 23rd, 2007 at 11:00 amPlease don’t go out in public unattended.
anyone who would stick up for torturers, and their right to maintain a semi-secret torture hole, is one sick, sick puppy.
March 23rd, 2007 at 11:44 amThe moniker “Gitmo Abu Gonzo” (GAG) is pretty accurate, isn’t it?
GAG can’t be sticking around to “save the children”. Unless he’s gone the way of Mark Foley on the topic.
No, GAG is sticking around for the martial law and to cover his a** as best he can around all this Madness that he and the rest of BushCo have created.
March 23rd, 2007 at 11:48 amWell well well…three solid hours since my original post, and Stubain has yet to reply.
Apparently, one ass-whipping a day is his limit.

March 23rd, 2007 at 1:06 pmI agree with Tobey Tall, there are things lurking in Guantanamo that they really don’t want us to know about. Everyone that was on the planes for instance, Those were not commercial airliners …
Let’s see if i get censored here…
Boy, you nutty libs sure have your panties in a twist. None of you have a clue what “torture” really is. Having dogs barking at you with underware on your head is NOT torture. Playing soccer at Gitmo is NOT torture. Running around naked in front of a female is NOT torture. Water boarding is close but still is NOT torture. Making someone think they will be shocked if they step off a box is NOT torture, either. These Islamic thugs are treated better than I was treated in boot camp. They eat better, too. I could go on and on, but you get the point and I had better stop here because some of you are wetting your depends and reaching for your heart medication.
You pitifull Bush haters… Your blinding hatred has ruined your capibility to think rationaly.
March 23rd, 2007 at 10:43 pmStubain,
Your ethnocentricity is showing.
You talk about our “blinding hatred.”
Read your comment above — it’s filled with hatred.
That’s called projection.
Crack a book and learn something — please.

Three hours? Some of us have jobs and work for a living. Bum…
As for the “ass-whipping a day…” Um, I don’t think the good game you gave me counts. Wierdo.
March 24th, 2007 at 9:17 amStupidBane,
According to our Pentagon and the International Red Cross, about 95 deaths resulted from the treatment that you say was NOT torture.
And when they don’t die, it is a tremendous recruiting tool for our enemy that we are treating innocent people like that. And before you get your underWEAR in a twist, our Pentagon says about 95% of the thousands that went through the prisons and were treated this way were later released because they were innocent. If they were not anti-American before they went in—they sure are when they come out.
Weren’t you lecturing us on Christianity yesterday? Today you advocate torture. Yet, in your mind there is no conflict!
March 24th, 2007 at 9:31 amJesus said love thine enemies. He did NOT say torture all if there is a 5% chance they are guilty of opposing your illegal invasion and occupation.

Nope. You are wrong. Not one single death came from panties on the head, barking dogs, water boarding, or standing on a box. If someone is beaten to death we are talking about a totally different things and those doing the beating should be dealt with, severely.
Again, your blinding hatred of all thing Bush has clouding your ability to distinguish between torture and legitimate interrogation techniques.
Me? lecturing about Christianity? No, wrong again.
