Politico’s Ben Smith on his false report: “A single, confident source close to John Edwards told me this morning that Edwards was ’suspending his campaign,’ and I posted it to the blog at 11:06 this morning. My source, and I, were wrong. … I trusted the source, somebody I’ve known for several years, and who has always been reliable. And with less than an hour before Edwards was to announce, I unwisely wrote the item without getting a second source.”
CNN’s Candy Crowley doesn’t have much sympathy: “Now, Politico.com has cracker jack reporters over there.”
UPDATE: More at Wonkette.
It’s called “Journalism”, Political. Look it up.
March 22nd, 2007 at 1:16 pmPolitico, that is.
/note to self, it’s called “spell-checking”. Look it up.
March 22nd, 2007 at 1:17 pmAt least HE admits to being wrong on his own. Unlike SOME people.
March 22nd, 2007 at 1:17 pmAnd unbiased Candy Crowley knows full well what a cracker jack reporter is. She was probably in a journalism class with one long ago. Thats how she can identify them.
March 22nd, 2007 at 1:19 pmUnless there’s sarcasm or non-verbal communication that I’m missing, I’m pretty sure she was paying them a compliment. Definition of “crackerjack” here
March 22nd, 2007 at 1:27 pmShe meant to say “crack-smoking” reporters, one imagines.
March 22nd, 2007 at 1:28 pmWhat do you like more:
Politicownd?
Or Pwndlitico?
Either applies.
March 22nd, 2007 at 1:29 pmIt hasn’t been a great week for Politico. They were so shook about TPM beating them to the USA firing story by about two months that they just had to come up with a major scoop. So, they run with a story about some anonymous insider giving them the names of possible replacements for Gonzales being considered by the White House. Great. Nothing can bear out that this was ever true, unless the anonymous insider steps forward. I could have made up that story myself. If none of the people named ever becomes Gonzales’ successor, it doesn’t prove me wrong. And, now they jump on a bullshit story about Edwards suspending his campaign.
What did we need Politico for? What niche was it supposed to be filling? For a supposed news organization that was featured prominently on talk shows and press conferences the instant it appeared on the scene (how often does that happen?), it sure has been a disappointment.
March 22nd, 2007 at 1:38 pmThe Politico: setting a new standard for hacktacular journamalism!
March 22nd, 2007 at 1:51 pmPolitico’s Ben Smith is a rightwing hack. Can’t stand him.
March 22nd, 2007 at 1:53 pmAnother “woops” moment for Politico.
March 22nd, 2007 at 2:01 pmPolitico has created an uphill battle for itself to restore its credibility.
March 22nd, 2007 at 2:09 pmA CNN hack has little to say about people that are trying to find answers when they are trying to hide them.
March 22nd, 2007 at 2:14 pmand, we do not need to make mistakes as the blogs become the news source for the world.
#13 oldtree
we do not need to make mistakes as the blogs become the news source for the world.
I’m not sure if I follow your drift, but I wouldn’t consider Politico a part of that “we”. Politico is no different from any other MSM outlet. It just has a “.com” after it. How many blogs get to send their people to the front of the WH briefing room and ask Bush questions almost immediately after they start up?
March 22nd, 2007 at 2:25 pmPolitico.c0n,
Bringing all the biases, sins and failings of the MSM to the bolgosphere!
March 22nd, 2007 at 2:50 pmCandy coated popcorn, peanuts and a prize, that’s what you get from crackerjacks. So where’s the prize (substance) el Politico?
March 22nd, 2007 at 4:33 pmYeah, well- news changes all the time. And, your point?
March 22nd, 2007 at 4:39 pmThanks for the correction, late as it is. In the present/future reporting which is done, it is VITAL that the facts are correct BEFORE being posted. Hope eveyone learned from this one.
March 22nd, 2007 at 5:18 pmPerhaps this explains Elizabeth Dole’s comment upfront at the news coference that “Some of you we trust less”
She was talkng about how they didn’t want anyone running with the story until the Edwards had told their family
Maybe they had some mis-imformation out there?
just sayin’
March 22nd, 2007 at 6:54 pmLot’s of balls from the MSM. I haven’t heard their retraction on WMD yet.
March 22nd, 2007 at 7:14 pm“Crackerjack” IS ALSO WHERE Candy Crowley GOT HER DRIVER’S LICENSE, JOURNALIST’S DIPLOMA and THAT SPIFFY LITTLE PLASTIC BEANIE WITH THE TURNING PROPELLER ON TOP—-ALL IN MINATURE OF COURSE!!!!!
March 22nd, 2007 at 9:55 pmAm I the only one who’d never heard of Politico before today?
