“U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was unharmed as he ducked behind a podium after a rocket or mortar round landed near the prime minister’s office Thursday while the two men were holding a news conference.” Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki remained claim through the attack. CNN’s Kyra Phillips reported:
For [Maliki] obviously, this is just another day in Iraq, another day in Baghdad. Obviously, the UN Secretary General right there in the middle, talking about a reconstruction plan, had a little bit of a reality check on his first trip to Iraq.
Watch it:
And the “accomplished” mission continues…
March 22nd, 2007 at 10:11 amAnd this is in the “Green Zone”, too.
Nice to see how well the “surge” is working out.
(BTW: we told you so.)
March 22nd, 2007 at 10:11 amAnyone taking bets on how many more trips Sec. Gen Moon makes to Iraq?
March 22nd, 2007 at 10:18 amAnd this is in the “Green Zoneâ€, too.
This is nothing new. The GZ gets hit all the time. The only reason this is news is because BKm was there.
March 22nd, 2007 at 10:20 amIraq Insurgency Last Throes – day 641
March 22nd, 2007 at 10:24 amWas that Chimpy’s rocket?
March 22nd, 2007 at 10:24 amI can see why he’d want to change the subject. :-D
Sure seems safer than D.C. to me. I mean how many more shellings happen every day in Adams Morgan.
Any trolls want to comment on the Security Push in Baghdad and the “surge” as a whole? Maybe give some examples of how well it’s doing.
March 22nd, 2007 at 10:24 amWhat a girly girl! He needs to take some tay kwan do!

Did you see Brian Williams reporting from the GZ last week?

How long does a “throe” last?
March 22nd, 2007 at 10:26 amWhat a girly girl. He needs to take some tay kwan do!
March 22nd, 2007 at 10:27 amJust another day in paradise. Thank you, George Bush!
March 22nd, 2007 at 10:28 amI must say, the desert air and sun do agree with Kyra Phillips. The bronze skin, the slightly messed hair… Something about reporting from a war zone just makes her hot.
March 22nd, 2007 at 10:29 amCuriously, he’s far mora valiant than Bush, Condi, Cheney, et al the ones that have passed running by Baghdad without stopping to give a press conference, only a thumbs-up for the photo op.
March 22nd, 2007 at 10:34 amLet’s see…the “surge” is supposed to turn everything around in Iraq, right? “Victory”, and all that?
Iraq is 167,400 square miles in area…about the size of California.
…but we’re having trouble securing that. Let’s concentrate on Baghdad.
Baghdad is 79 square miles in area…about the size of Los Angeles.
…but we’re having trouble securing that. Let’s concentrate on the Green Zone.
The Green Zone is 4 square miles in area…about the size of Chichen Itza.
…but we seem to be having difficulty securing even that.
So please…explain to me how this “surge” is going to work again?
March 22nd, 2007 at 10:36 amFunny how Kyra Airhead seems like a half-decent reporter when she’s out of the studio and wearing flak gear rather than primped and pancaked. And she speaks Arabic, too.
March 22nd, 2007 at 10:43 am#14 So please…explain to me how this “surge†is going to work again?
Comment by TripMaster Monkey — March 22, 2007 @ 10:36 am
Easy, it’s a political move to appease warmongers in the neocon ranks, and to pull more suplemental bills filled with cash, to keep the GOP cozy speculators funneling pallets of money to their retirement accounts. And is working well.
/Sarcasm (?) off
March 22nd, 2007 at 10:43 am#14 TripMaster Monkey
The only thing the ’surge’ is supposed to secure are the presidents poll numbers, which have been stuck at around 30%. Since he still has his core support, that means so far the ’surge’ has been a complete success.
March 22nd, 2007 at 10:43 amLuckily they weren’t hurt. It is always a risk being in a war zone.
March 22nd, 2007 at 10:52 am#9 -Jake:
Yes, but the President said also on May 2003[4 years ago]…”Our major combat operations in Iraq have ENDED’, means over.
Is it really OVER?! after 4 years
if it is, then what the ‘SURGE’ is all about?
He was not talking here about Carrier Abraham Lincoln mission, there is no cobmat operations run by Navy carriers….

No, no, he was talking of himself and his cronies, with a royal we, to signify that he wouldn’t give a sh!t about the war, once it was started and funneling money to their pockets, like a well greased machine.
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:00 amJake @9
No but my training NCO left the Green Zone 2 months before he reported in here. I’ll take his word over anything Brian Williams reported.
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:02 amJakey Poo –
Merriam-Webster defines a throe as a “1 : PANG, SPASM”, both of which are defined as brief or temporary. A 641 day pang of spasm would be more HONESTLY classified as a chronic problem. Have you ever had a pang or spasm that has lasted 641 days and gotten stronger each day…would you say that it is in its last throes? What am I saying? You probably would as long as Faux Snooze told you so.
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:04 ammmm, that was Ban.
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:06 amWhen everyone yelled “Duck!”, Ki-moon thought the Aflack insurance adjuster had entered the room.
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:11 am#14:
CLASSIC!!! LOL! Great post. My thoughts, exactly!
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:12 amMaybe he’s shaken up enough to actually DO something about it…
Naw… I don’t believe that either.
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:18 amAn Army major efriend of mine tells me that Green Zone security is not all it’s cracked up to be–i.e., it’s penetrable. So one day I expect to see that the insurgents got in, not just lobbed rockets in.
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:18 amThe Iraqis were obviously just upset at the UN, because they know if it had been up to the UN, they wouldn’t enjoy the freedom they do today. You don’t ever hear any news about mortars or bombs ever targeting people who aren’t part of the UN. At least I don’t, on Fox News or Rush Limbaugh.
Dumbass liberals.
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:22 amBy the way, I wanted to let you all know that I am very happy and satisfied with my life as a closeted, repressed, self-hating furry Republican. That is why I spend so much time posting comments on this site.
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:28 amJesus, Maliki didn’t even flinch… he’s like Robert Duvall in Apocalypse Now…
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:29 amHmmm, let’s see – the rocket was apparently aimed at al-Maliki’s office so perhaps it was from a Sunni group? Better check those serial numbers to see if it came from Saudi Arabia?
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:31 am30 Killed, 33 Freed in Company-sized Assault on Prison
Truck Bombing of Kurdish HQ in Mosul Kills or Injures 45
Early in the morning on Thursday, before dawn, some 200 Sunni Arab guerrillas in Muqdadiya (Diyala Province) stormed a jail and freed 33 prisoners, many of them guerrillas. I can’t think of another recent operation that involved a company-sized fighting force. Thirty persons died in the fighting. One wire service reported, “Insurgents battled Iraqi and US reinforcements, set fire to the police station, courthouse and 20 police vehicles before making their escape.” If they accomplished all that after US reinforcements arrived, imagine what they could have accomplished if no US and Iraqi troops had come out to confront them.
Part of the explanation for why this could happen lies in a recent report on the readiness of Iraqi troops. The Iraqi military won’t be ready to ’stand up’ any time soon, according to the General Accounting Office. A third of Iraqi troops are on leave at any one time. Many troops on the books who draw a salary don’t really exist and are just a scam. And, the Iraqi troops are deeply dependent on the US for the simplest logistics.
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:38 amLooks like I can’t post links here. There is an interactive map on the BBC.co.uk webpage which shows all attacks that happened there. Very interesting and worth looking at. I tried to post the link, but my comments didn’t show up.
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:39 amActually, I just looked in on Juan Cole. A snippet:
“The increasing hostility of the Sadr Movement to the government of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki” so who knows?
Things sure do seem more chaotic than ever over there!
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:40 amThat’s the trouble with surges. It happens both sides. What’s that called, children? Escalation.
It also helps if you actually know what you’re aiming your surge at.
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:42 amI see the fake Jake is back. If he lasts 641 days, is THAT a pang of spasm or a chronic problem? Are there moderators who enforce the Terms of Use agreement or not?
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:47 amDid he immediately get on a plane and flee to NYC like Kofi?
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:49 amIraqi “Freedom’s on the March,” just march lightly around all the bodies and watch out for those mortar holes.
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:51 amThere is only one Jake in the whole world, and it is I. Anyone who uses the name Jake must answer to ME.
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:52 am#30- Dear Jake, you should just let go and try to be true to your basic, internal instints. It’s OK to be gay, as long as you don’t sleep with every nice man who offers you a stray compliment and a fifty dollar bill. That’s called: a whore. Just be natural and things will happen to you in a nice way, naturally. OK? Bye, bye, my boy. Keep up the good writting. I like seeing your name in print.
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:53 amJake, while I think you are terribly wrong about political and social issues and I dont believe you are 75, I dont approve namejacking.
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:54 amEnd the namejacking, it destroys the thread.
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:54 am#38- No. Didn’t you read the article or are you doing as you usually do and experiencing a premature ejaculation?

March 22nd, 2007 at 11:58 amI have an idea Think Progress. Let’s ignore and not post any stories on how VIOLENCE IN BAGHDAD IS DOWN 30% but have a circle jerk and make sure everyone knows about a FAILED attack.
Yeah, you guys really want America to win.
March 22nd, 2007 at 12:04 pmTP EDITORS:
should probably read “remained calm.”
March 22nd, 2007 at 12:06 pmSO much success with respect to the FUBAR known as Viet-raq. Sad that this is what is “business as usual” in Iraq, but that’s what the GOP wants: death/bombs/war…permanent war works for them. Scum.
March 22nd, 2007 at 12:09 pmDidn’t you get the memo? America already won. “Mission Accomplished.” We libs just don’t want to occupy the country. You already won your war. Go relish in the spilled blood.
March 22nd, 2007 at 12:09 pmThey say Maliki barely flinched because he is used to the daily bombing. That may be so but I believe he is desperately waiting for the sweet release of that bright warm flash of orange death to blow him to pieces and end his misery.
March 22nd, 2007 at 12:10 pmTo Firehead. Dipstick, do you really think violence is down in BadBad? Because a Bushy says so? Let me help you get a little reali-nam in you. They had elections in Vietnam in 1967 where a free and fair democracy was set up. Reed about it, it was all the rage. Freedom on the march. Then they had something called the tit defensive?…mmm…Or was it the Ted offices?…no wait the TETE Offense.
Geez, does your mom still spoon feed you your gerber?
March 22nd, 2007 at 12:17 pmFirst, Sec. Gen Moon, welcome to what the UN and other countries have been ignoring for the past five years. What are YOU gonna do about this “war”? Nothing i suspect.
March 22nd, 2007 at 12:18 pmSecond, my bro in law served his country honorably for twenty yrs in the Marine Corp as an intel analyst (not affilated w/any Abu Gharib sh*t). Recently, he decided to go to Iraq as a contractor for a few months. Secured areas of Iraq? According to him, yeah right. Let me just say that it is time for good hard nosed investigative journalism. Corporate sponsored media aint covering half of the sh*t that’s going on over there. Good luck American citizens, cuz we gonna need lots of it in the coming years.
America lost before we went in.
March 22nd, 2007 at 12:21 pmHow about that “surge,” eh?

WOW!!! Green Zone under attack and the repuke media hores are telling us everything in Iraq is “A-Okay”.
March 22nd, 2007 at 12:43 pmYeah, you guys really want America to win.
Comment by firehead — March 22, 2007 @ 12:04 pm
We CAN’t win you moron. There is nothing to “win”. The war has been lost for a long time and its idiots like you with your big game sports analogies that continue the support of an unnecissary conflict that kills Americans everyday. Even when the troops do come home from an unwinnable war you and your retarded friends (30 %ers) will cry defeatism and say if we only would have stuck it we would have won. How long is enough time, dumbass, 10 years, 15 years? Your biggest problem is you think this conflict had something to do with national security instead of empire building. I really wish nothing but ill will upon you, you stupid bastard!!!!
March 22nd, 2007 at 1:08 pmWe’re not in Turtle Bay any more, Toto!
March 22nd, 2007 at 1:18 pmDid anyone else laugh when the saw that?
March 22nd, 2007 at 2:33 pmSorry but I couldn’t help but laugh. The UN guys wants outta here and he wants it yesterday. Look at the expression on his face.
March 22nd, 2007 at 3:39 pmPuke, we have to listen to Myra Phillips in Iraq now?
March 22nd, 2007 at 3:47 pmtoo bad there wasnt a mortar attack when our buck toothed underqualified secretary of state was there recently. That would have been hilarious
March 22nd, 2007 at 5:24 pmto commentor #10:
that “girly-girl” is a human being – you’ll understand if you ever get there
March 22nd, 2007 at 5:56 pmfor Real Redneck: maybe you’ll understand when you make it to “real human being”.
for evil Spaniard: exactly
March 22nd, 2007 at 5:59 pmI swear, you people at thinkprogress are getting lazier and sloppier each day.
PAY ATTENTION!
you were trying to spell “calm” NOT “claim”
find a proofreader, seriously.
March 22nd, 2007 at 8:03 pm(folding speech and placing in his breast pocket while crouching cautiously)…
…”I’m out dawg, I’ll deliver this speech later”…
-Ban Ki-moon-
…”Punk”…
-al Maliki-
March 22nd, 2007 at 8:48 pmSecretary General Ban IS UNACCUSTOMED TO HAVING HIS FEATHERS RUFFLED BY BOMB BLASTS, HAVING BEEN A VETERAN OF COCKTAIL RECEPTIONS, WHERE THE MOST UNNERVING EVENT IS SOMEONE DROPPING HIS CANAPE UNTO THE FLOOR!!!!! Maliki IS SO NUMBED BY THE CONTINUOUS VIOLENCE THAT THIS WAS A MERE BATTING OF AN EYELASH TO HIM, AND HE PROBABLY WAS WONDERING WHY Ban DUCKED FOR COVER BEHIND THE PODIUM AND LOOKED LIKE THE SCARED “WITTLE BUNNY WABBIT” THAT HE WAS AT THAT MOMENT—-HARDLY THE “BRAVE NEW LEADER” OF THE UNITED NATIONS!!!!!
March 22nd, 2007 at 8:57 pmas a well seasoned, professional faggot myself, i really think that as long as we’re discussing things like WAR, which kill faggot and stratefaggot alike, we should really refrain from the whole fag thing.
keep THAT simpleminded shit on the anne coulter, JEB site, ok?
and by the way, if only eleven thousand fags in ten years got booted for the dont tell, dont ask policy, (AND ONLY THE FAGS WHO SPOKE UP, OR GOT CAUGHT, WERE THROWN OUT)…
i think its a good idea for strate america to realise that at those numbers, that means at least SEVERAL tens of thousands of fags STILL SERVE, AND NOBODY KNOWS THE DIFFERENCE, so if ya think throwin fags out of the army is a good idea, ask the mothers whose sons got SAVED BY A FAG, protected by a fag, and have been nursed, cared for, fed, rescued or whose commanding officer is one of the fags who is STILL UNDER COVER, (valerie plame), before you shoot your stupid strate fuckin mouth off…
its not about what you suck, its about wether you know how to kill for uncle sam!
really, if you need ME to save yr life from a mortar, or scream so you DUCK from a sniper shot, do you really care if im suckin dick, when it comes time to rescue you?
would you rather be left to die, than saved by a fag.
grow up.
March 23rd, 2007 at 4:40 ami agree with raymond, however, once the un leader is accustomed to bombs, its time to get rid of him…
March 23rd, 2007 at 4:47 amchances are, the whole fuckin thing was probably staged to send a concrete message to the NEW un secretary, nice subliminal way to say, ‘watch yrself, the elite are watching you”…
like they really cant protect the un secretary from bomb blasts, please!
NOBODY CAN GET A BOMB NEAR THE UN SECRETARY WITHOUT A TOP SECURITY CLEARANCE, AND IF YOU THINK DIFFERENTLY, THEN ID RATHER NOT DISCUSS IT, OR ANYTHING ELSE, WITH YOU, or your friends…
there was no bomb blast. it didnt happen, it cant happen, nobody would let it happen.
if theyre saying it happened, then there is some other reason for them to say so….
grow up.
March 23rd, 2007 at 5:00 amLewis post 57. You ask did anyone laugh when they saw that.
Yes I did. I had to run several times. Laughed a lot.
We should have never gone in in the first place. If we did we needed to follow the Colin Powell doctrine again like in desert storm. Go kick their teeth down their throats and get the hell out pronto. That was our lesson from Viet Nam.
Now if the Neocons attack Iran the Greenzone could very well be over run. The soldiers who are in Iraq now serving their 3rd and 4tours of duty will never leave. At least not alive. Their rotations will cease immediately and they will be there until when? Anybody?
Little bUSHIES victory?!
Reinstitution of the draft, and possible Martial Law. Oil at 7 to 10 dollars a gallon. $200 a barrel. Collapse of the dollar and the US economy. The end of the US as a world super power once and for all. You won’t be able to recognize this country.
Please stop voting republican.
