BREAKING: Gonzales Approved Firings Of U.S. Attorneys»

ABC News reports: “New documents show Gonzales approved firings of U.S. attorneys, contradicting earlier claims he was not closely involved.”

UPDATE: The AP reports:

Gonzales approved plans to fire several U.S. attorneys in a November meeting. …

The Nov. 27 meeting, in which the attorney general and at least five top Justice Department officials participated, focused on a five-step plan for carrying out the firings of the prosecutors, Justice Department officials said late Friday.

There, Gonzales signed off on the plan, which was crafted by his chief of staff, Kyle Sampson. Sampson resigned last week in the wake of the political firestorm surrounding the firings.

UPDATE II: On March 12, Gonzales denied any involvement in the prosecutor purge:

I was not involved in seeing any memos, was not involved in any discussions about what was going on … That’s basically what I knew as attorney general.

UPDATE III: New documents released tonight, “including Gonzales’s appointment calendar, show that the attorney general and his deputy, Paul McNulty, participated in an hour-long meeting about the firings on Nov. 27. Seven of the eight prosecutors were let go on Dec. 7.” The meeting occurred during the 18-day gap in documents the Justice Department had previously released.

ok - resignation would be much too good for him…

he needs to be indicted or impeached or whatever
so that he cannot get another lawyering job…

i want to see his license before they take it away from him.

  4. kasinca Says:

Tell us something we don’t already know. Of course he approved the firings at the direction of Dubya the drunken AWOL coward in the White House. This Friday was intended to head off the confession of Kyle Sampson next week. Gonzo is dead meat. It is his turn to take one to protect the Chimpanzee driving this runaway train. This administration and their apologists in the Republic Party are worse than the mofia. History will record their incompetent power grab as the worst crimes in history.

  5. Punchy Says:

This still will not get him canned. At this point, AG could eat a fetus and still have Bush’s support.

But oh no, we have NO reason to suspect these guys might not tell the truth when Congress interviews them.

So I guess this hurts the Prez’s statements about them giving full disclosure before. Big surprise. They just disclosed this now before Sampson divulged it. Damn are these people slime.

Who needs sworn testimony from these guys?

They’re word obviously is good, right?

  15. Briseadh na Faire Says:

Gonzalez: “I accept responsibility for everything that happens here within this department. But when you have 110,000 people working in the department, obviously there are going to be decisions that I’m not aware of in real time. Many decisions are delegated.”

So, the lead prosecuting attorney of the United States of American delegated the firings of Federal Attorneys who were investigating high profile corruption cases involving Republicans and/or rebuffed requests to pursue meritless cases against Democrats.

I still find it amazing that the trolls want a Federal Justice System fixed around the policy of protecting the political party in power and attacking the opposition party.

Continue to pray that those who know of wrongdoing by the Bush administration continue to come forward with testimony and evidence.

    It’s working!

  16. I WORFEUS Says:

  29. Mr. Evil Says:

Karl Rove would throw his own mother under the bus to protect himself and his dreamboy, George Bush. They’ve already started by tossing Scooter Libby. Now it’s time for Gonzo to go for a ride, under the bus. Eventually it’ll come down to Karl Rove vs. George Bush. They’ll end up pointing fingers at each other saying, “he made me do it!”

    Nio they can’t.

You don’t go to jail for lying in a private conversation, like the one the President is offering.

You do go to jail for lying under oath.

And when there is an official court stenographer, making a transcript of everything that was said., lies are quickly exposed when they can be cross referenced.

  42. Tony W Says:

Gonzo didn’t lie, he was just careless with the truth. It’s imperative to have these crooks testify publicly, under oath. Even under oath, there’s no guarantee they’ll tell the truth esp Rove who’s crafty as a serpent.

Alberto Gonzales’ sudden moment in the unflattering spotlight has prompted a new look at his background.

Gonzales’ younger sister Theresa plead guilty to possession of cocaine with intent to deliver. Nine years later, while Gonzales was on the Texas Supreme Court, his mother and another brother signed over their houses to a bail bondsman to raise bail for Theresa after she was charged with the same offense.

No, its not. If the President is suspected of involvement in this, and since the firing orders came from the White House it is not impossible that following Gonzales testimony, the Presidents powers may limited and hearing called into his conduct.

If a link to Bush is seen, then he won’t be able to pardon anyone. Its just a matter at this point of getting them on record, under oath, so they can hang themselves.

Of course, they had heaps of help from the Republicans in the House and the Senate: covering up, looking the other way, yawning, and carrying on with their own personal ways of corruption…

The Republican Party was founded in 1854, some one hundred and fifty years ago, on a strong anti-slavery platform. They have produced some good Presidents, mostly in the 19th c. and early 20th c. The last four Republican Presidents have been corrupt, to varying degrees. But Bush II has topped the lot, with his unfortunate combination of arrogance, innocence (about foreign countries, their peoples and their nationalistic reactions to be invaded and occupied) and stupidity.

  98. John Gilpins Says:

I’m in total shock. I would have bet almost anything that Gonzales wasn’t involved in the firings.

Just look at Alberto Gonzales’ eyes. I often look at peoples’ eyes, because that’s the window to their soul. Gonzales’ eyes are so trusting, warm, and kind-looking. I just sense that there’s not a trace of mean-spiritedness from his endearing eyes and face. You just know that his temperment is sweet; there’s not a mean or cross bone in his body.

I’m sure Gonzales must be saddened by the financial turmoil some of these fired attorneys are going through. One fired, older attorney is having huge financial problems. Finding a job is difficult when you’re older, and you’ve been fired.

I really feel sad about this, and it looks like Gonzales may be fired, too. Who saw this coming? Certainly not most of us.

If Gonzales can’t find another job in the law profession, he should consider counseling. He’s so caring, and he’s the person anyone would like to chat with when the going is rough in life. You just know Gonzales feels everyones pain. The last thing this guy would do is inflict pain on someone.

If counseling isn’t in the cards, a million-dollar job as a lobbyist probably is.

  110. erock Says:

    Rodan,

I’m not quite sure what this abstract “left” is, but I personally hold all religions equally. I never said Christians created genocide. Fact is, the concept has always existed. We’ll probably never know who did it first. As the old saying goes, religions don’t kill people, people kill people.

  111. legaleze Says:

stonehinge at 91. I don’t disagree. There is a great deal of arrogance in this country, an arrogance exemplified by Bushco. Complacency, however, also plays a big role. People just don’t feel the need to be politically involved or morally aware of what this country is doing in their names.
