Bush to keep Gitmo open to 2009.

By Payson Schwin on Mar 23rd, 2007 at 4:07 pm

Bush to keep Gitmo open to 2009.

“The U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay will likely remain open for the rest of George W. Bush’s presidency, because it will take time to conduct the legal proceedings of the detainees there, the White House said on Friday.”

From today’s press briefing:

Q: So, realistically, are you saying that Guantanamo Bay will not be shut down before the end of his presidency?

SNOW: I doubt it, no. I don’t think it will.

  1. Proud Dem says:

The sooner we impeach him, the sooner it will close.

  2. Crump's Brother says:

I say we keep it open until we can put Bush and Cheney in there and let them have the treatment they deserve

  3. R says:

That can be his new retreat after he’s impeached and charged with war crimes.

  4. oldtree says:

neither will be with us that long

  5. dlet says:

So when is the Red Cross or anyone going to be allowed to talk with the prisoners?

  6. Jakey Flakey says:

    Wow, who would have guessed?

    Everybody but me and Jake.

  7. KRank says:

Slight correction: the headline should read “Bush to keep Gitmo open to 2009″ not “through 2009″. The latter implies a time period encompassing the enitire year, edning on Dec 31, 2009. Bush’s presidency will mercifully end almost twelve months earlier than that, unless he gets impeached and removed first.

  8. R says:

Hey, George, how’s Cheney’s blot clot? -Dead, yet? And, how’s that drinking problem of yours coming along? What’s that? You want another stiff one, straight up? Sure thing, George.

  9. VerbalKint says:

Bush wants it open because he likes playing God with the prisoners there. Seriously. He is a sick little f*ck.

  10. Flaco says:

We need to let these Islamists go home so the can give their wives a good Koranic beating.

  11. Jake says:

Typical liberal media spin. Guantanomo is controlled by Cuba (which is why American laws like habeas corpus or a prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment don’t apply there), so Bush doesn’t have any say in whether Gitmo closes or not.

  12. RUCerious says:

    Crump’s Bro ~
    ya beat me 2 it.

  13. Jake says:

Oops, I forgot that the Gitmo being controlled by Cuba talking point is no longer valid. My bad. Bush is the best!

  14. Rodan says:

I saw close Gitmo and feed the Jihadis there to the sharks to piss you Lefties off!

  15. flipflop says:

I like how they slipped “legal proceedings” into that statement.

I guess it depends on what you mean by “legal”.

  16. Tom says:

Hey, Jake buddy, you’re wrong. Guantanamo Bay is a US Naval Base, controlled by the US Military. For a full history of it, check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guantanamo_Bay_detainment_camp.
Is it really your point that somehow Castro controls what the US military is doing at Gitmo? Please.

  17. Jake the Trouser Snake says:

Gates wanted to close Gitmo right away, when he became Defense Secretary.

Gates says Gitmo is causing too much damage for us overseas, with the torture and the kangaroo court tribunals.

  18. dlet says:

so Bush doesn’t have any say in whether Gitmo closes or not.

  19. VerbalKint says:

#11 WTF? Is this the fake Jake trying to act even stupider than the real one?

  20. KRank says:

Oh, I forgot — Gitmo is “controlled by Cuba”. That explains why we needed to ask Fidel’s permission to house prisoners there. And why, even though George Bush would love to close the place, he can’t because Fidel’s brother (Dwayne, I think) insists that it stay open.

So the President’s hands are tied on this one, people. It’s all up to Castro’s brother and he says “No way, Jose”.

  21. Jake says:

    Proud Dem:

Don’t worry about the fake Jakes. Are you going to try for simultaneous impeachment trials, because if you only get rid of Bush, then President Cheney will simply keep Gitmo open (and maybe send a few key Senators there too ; )

  22. gummitch says:

This is symptomatic of the entire state of the administration. They’ve screwed the pooch so thoroughly that their only interest is dragging everything out until Bush beats it out the door in January 2009. After that, it’s someone else’s problem. In fact, the worse the situation is when he leaves the better, because it’s undoubtedly going to be a pile of crap left for the Democrats to clean up. When the Democrats can’t make a silk purse out of this pig’s ear (how many metaphors is that?), the Republicans can squeal about how incompetent the libruls are and by god, you’d better vote real patriots back into power.

  24. JesusChrist_GodofWAR says:

Geneva Conventions? Remember? The one’s the US helped draft after the fall of Germany?

Is there any wonder that the US is now hated around the world? Thanks a lot!, BushCo. I thought you were business friendly. Alas, all you have done is make it harder for us to do business outside the US. Oh, I remember, unless you are Halliburton or Bechtel, then it’s easier to do business outside the US.

ITMFA now!!! and put an end to the insanity!

  25. Rodan says:

Rudy when President will send many Leftists to Gitmo. Some may get thrown overboard on the way. Hopefully George Soreass and John Tadpoledesta!

  26. dlet says:

    Proud Dem:

    Comment by Jake

Yes Proud Dem, are you personally going for simultaneous impeachment trials? Because Jake thinks you have that kind of power apparently.

Jake…wake up. Time to go to sleep again.

  27. KRank says:

if you only get rid of Bush, then President Cheney will simply keep Gitmo open (and maybe send a few key Senators there too ; )

    Comment by Jake — March 23, 2007 @ 4:32 pm

Won’t “President Cheney” need to get permission from Castro’s brother in order to send “a few key Senators” there (after he imposes martial law, presumably)?

  28. Flaco says:

HAVANA (Reuters) – Almost half a century of communist rule has saved Havana’s eclectic architecture from the urban developer’s bulldozer, but a lack of repair has taken a ruinous toll on its neo-Baroque and Art Deco gems.

Dozens of colonial buildings and beautiful squares in Old Havana have been restored since the U.N. cultural agency UNESCO designated it a world heritage site in 1982. But the rest of the city of 2.2 million people is falling into decay.

“The situation has become critical. There are areas of the city where buildings collapse every few days. The overcrowding is tremendous,” said leading Cuban architect Mario Coyula, who fears Havana’s architectural beauty is damaged beyond repair.

In teeming, pot-holed Central Havana, poverty coexists with some of the world’s finest examples of neo-Baroque and Art Deco architecture built before Fidel Castro came to power in 1959.

It is Cuba’s most densely-populated district, with 160,000 people living in 1.3 square miles of crumbling buildings dating from the 1920s and 1930s, many now lacking basic sanitation.

  29. nffcnnr says:

The Bush Admin is in “kill the clock” mode: Stall the troop withdrawal; stonewall congress; “gum up” the DOJ. They’re just ridin’ it out til Jan 2009.

  30. Ben B says:

Did anyone seriously think that this administration was going to shut it down? Especially after how valiantly they have defended it these last few years? I would like to see it closed, too, but even if it was closed, the people there would be moved elsewhere to be tortured, etc. The closing would probably give us a positive boost concerning how other countries view us, but not much because we still wouldn’t be treating prisoners humanely.

In response to #11, I’m not a constitutional scholar, so I don’t know exactly how our laws might or might not apply to Guantanamo. Ethically it doesn’t matter. The reason we have habeas corpus and other civil rights in America is because they are fundamentally a good thing. These things are what got America to the top in the pecking order of civilizations in the first place.

Back to Gitmo. Bush ain’t going to close it. The next president will (probably a Democrat), and it will be a real sign to other nations that we’re going to try to recover some of our lost status due to our ethical lapses (which wouldn’t be the case if Bush closed it). Until then, there’s not really much we can do. Bush isn’t going to be impeached and thrown out of office – the votes simply are not there. Sorry, but we’re going to have to live with Gitmo for a couple more years.

It is a small faction of Americans that LIKE this action.

Please try not to include ALL Americans into that type of statement.

  46. JRoyale says:

I never understood the whole “Gitmo isn’t under the Constitution” argument. It seems to me that if we aren’t going to take responsibility for it, then by default, Cuba is supposed too. So I always wonder why some attorney didn’t go into a Cuban court and request that they protect the ineligible rights of the detainees?

Also, I don’t understand why a Democratic Congress would agree to continue funding the prison at Gitmo. It would seem to me that if Congress refuses to fund it, it would have to close.

  47. Tuber says:

I really wish the narrative based on which party hates its country more than the other would cease. It’s as bogus as it is diverting.

I suggest that the narrative be reframed to be who loves its country more. That would be a more positive approach and would benefit the debate instead of always dragging it through the sewer.

Also, I would like to recommend that we all stipulate the following:
    - Neither party is working with or supporting the terrorists
    - Neither party does not support our fellow citizens in the military
    - No American hates their country

By acknowledging those facts . (granted there are always whack-jobs but their numbers are so small that statistically they are irrelevant) and removing the negative and largely false accusations from the debates the level and quality of debate would increase exponentially.

    Just some thoughts.

  50. WaltTheMan says:

As my detective bureau looks deeper into the matter, I learn more about Jake every day:

Jake’s career is what made him what he is today.

He worked as a crash dummy for the NASA Rocket Sled program.
After each run they would scrape his brains off of the base of the sled into a bucket, turn him upside down, put a funnel into each nostril and pour them back in.

He still sloshes when he nods or shakes his head.

Every once in a while, the air relief valve at the back of his head malfunctions and a little grey matter drips out. Of late, no one notices any difference when that occurs.

Jake’s golden retriever has entered some posts when he (Jake, not the dog) passes out in a stupor. On those occasions, the posts seem more rational, hence the apparent schizoid behavior.

  51. Ben B says:

#36, I’m not saying we coddle these guys, I’m just saying we shouldn’t be torturing them. I personally don’t like it when other people are in pain – regardless of what they’ve done. I do see the need to imprison people in order to keep more people from being harmed, but bringing them torture to the point of killing some of them is beyond the bounds of acceptable human behavior. That’s gotta stop.

#38, we should be leading by example. We kinda look hypocritical when we tell Saudi not to torture people when there are pretty major incidences of it happening by Americans. And again, it’s not about looking good to other nations, it’s about just plain not torturing people. The thing about other nations viewing us more favorably is a side effect.

  56. Jake says:

    Fake Jakes, stop it.

Clearly all of the people being held at Gitmo are terrorists; that’s why we have them there, without proof, torturing them constantly so they say shit like “I assassinated JFK” or “I murdered Princess Diana”. And that’s why of all the people we’ve released so far they’ve all been convicted of terrorism, and never convicted of some bogus visa immigration charge.

Yes, they are terrorists alright. How do I know? Because Fox News and President Bush tell me so, and they would never lie to or mislead the American people about anything.

  60. Tuber says:

    #41,

Your argument is false. We are either the United States of America or we are not. There is only one government and one military and therefore the actions of those entities are the responsibility of ALL Americans.

That is our structure. That is what “United” means. It does not mean that we are “United” when it’s things are good but segregated when things are bad.

And as far as a foreigner labeling us psychopaths, that is not outlandish or even unwarranted. How would you describe the USA currently if you were looking at our current actions and activities from the outside?

As a veteran and with family and friends that have to deal with the deplorable conditions in the miltary health system, I can with full conviction say that ANYONE that supports Bush after knowing how he and his supplicants are treating the wounded and disabled vets do NOT support the troops.

It boggles the mind that anyone could ever argue that they do in light of recient revelations.

    I agree Tuber.

At the same time though, you have politicians on all sides that DON’T have the interests of the general population in mind. They have lobbyist that pull them one way or another. They have personal interests that pull them one way or another. They have political reasons that pull them one way or another. They DON’T work together for the common good.

There is also TV personalities that try to sway the public into believing one politician or the other.

All this produces resentment and distrust from each side.

This leads to the bizarre posturing that you mention.

There simply is no real good solid dialog from politicians that the general population can or are willing to listen too.

The proper dialog and debate has to start from the top but all too often the people at the top are setting the tone for negative debate and false accusations.

I totally agree with you – the quality of debate would increase exponentially. It has only one way to go!

Since you don’t “give a hoot about Human Rights”, you won’t mind providing me with your address so I can try and find out how your family is connected to the terrorists will you???

    2. If at first you don’t succeed, try again:
Jake’s career is what made him what he is today.
He worked as a crash dummy for the NASA Rocket Sled program.
After each run they would scrape his brains off of the base of the sled into a bucket, turn him upside down, put a funnel into each nostril and pour them back in.
He still sloshes when he nods or shakes his head.
Every once in a while, the air relief valve at the back of his head malfunctions and a little grey matter drips out. Of late, no one notices any difference when that occurs.
Jake’s golden retriever has entered some posts when he (Jake, not the dog) passed out. On those occasions, the posts seem more rational, hence the apparent schizoid behavior.

  91. Rodan says:

“Now you want to limit what Freedom of Religion can stand for…. But when it comes to prayer time in schools you don’t mind standing up and saying that this should be REQUIRED…..”

I don’t believe in prayer in schools.
I don’t acre about the Muslims’s religion. I don’t like them imposing their customs on the rest.
I don’t like them wanting to us to accomodate them.
They should intigrate into our society.
If they want to live under Sharia, they should’ve stayed in their ratholes.
How come Jews, Hindus and Buddhists integrate and don’t impose their values on our society?
It’s funny how the Left belives in secularisam except when it comes to Islam.
    Hypocrisy.

  92. And You Thought REAGAN Was Stupid says:

    #74,

Cockroaches and rodents thrive in unclean and unsanitary environments. However, if you change the environment to be as clean and sanitary as possible, you avoid an infestation and cause the remaining ones to be easily seen and then taken care of.

So I disagree with your assertion that the change has to start at the top. The change needs to start with the “environment”, which in this case represents the people. One of the reasons that our structure has been as powerful and as successful as it has is because our “leaders” follow the people, and not the other way around.

Only we can start the change.

    #90-Walt,

The current provocateur “Jake” is one in the same as the previous provocateur, “mighty aphrodite”. Slightly different tone, same arrogance and tendency to embellish (lie) when describing itself and its qualifications/experience.

That is my guess. But the stench sure is familiar.

  98. Bluedog49 says:

The Bush cultist responds to the charge that Bush allowed the worst terrorist attack in history by claiming FDR allowed Pearl Harbor. Hey stupid, even if that were true, we proceeded to beat the two biggest industrial war powers in the world in two separate hemispheres in less time than Bush has spent bumbling around in Iraq. And, those were Democrats running that war, a-hole.

  106. Rodan says:

Wow, the giant flying prehistoric dinasour knows how to do a Ctl+C and follow that with a whopping Ctl+V.

  108. Bluedog49 says:

Nonsense. The treaty (the U.S. basically forced on Cuba a century ago) gives the U.S. “complete jurisdiction and control” over Guantanamo for as long as the U.S. wants it. See Rasul v. Dubya.

    Cheers,

  119. Bluedog49 says:

OK, Jake, you’ve elicited a response again. Thanks for demonstrating what I’ve been saying around here for a couple of days: that you are a vile, disgusting piece of filth.

Since our society is the most religious of all industrial nations, I would think that if Islamicists were going to attack the west for being secular, they would have gone after Denmark or the Netherlands first. If that were the measuring stick for Islamicists, we’d be way down the list.

The above would be what some academics would call “critical thinking.” It’s not really the strong suit of the average Bush cultist.

  120. Rodan says:

Tell us, if you can, which religion Timothy McVey worshiped?

He worshipped a Knock off called Christian Identity. It’s fake christianity since it cliams Jesus was an Aryan. He was a Jew. Christianity is Romanized Judiasm.

  127. Rodan says:

The Islamists have gone after Denmark and Netherlands.
Remember the cartoon roits and the attack on Danish embassies?
How aboy in the Netherlands where a Militant Muslim killed Theo Van Gogh.
Also in Holland anti-Islamic politicians have body gaurds and recieve death threats.
Muslim youths also attack Dutch in Islamic majority neighborhoods.
Recently however the Dutch have fought back and backed by soccer Hooligans rioted and beat the fuck out of Muslims.

A liberal Founder, Thomas Jefferson: “I do not find in orthodox Christianity one redeeming feature.”

See, the men who fashioned our constitution were in general agreement regarding christianity. As they were the founders of our country, I would think patriotic Americans would respect their feelings.

  130. Rodan says:

“How far do we get to go back counting? By some estimates, the Roman Catholic Church tortured more than 9 million women to death during the middle ages. Does that count?”

    That’s a made up figure.

    JesusChrist_GodofWAR ,
I love how the Stalinist Left give Islamic murderers a pass. Oh well what do you expect from stalinsist their idol killed 20 Million people all in the name of Socialism!

  134. Bluedog49 says:

Sure, Rodan, I’ll see you and raise you 20 million dead Jews, Polish and Gypsies by the NAZI’s. And, before you start howling, a quote:

My feelings as a Christian points me to my Lord and Savior as a fighter. It points me to the man who once in loneliness, surrounded by a few followers, recognized these Jews for what they were and summoned men to fight against them and who, God’s truth! was greatest not as a sufferer but as a fighter. In boundless love as a Christian and as a man I read through the passage which tells us how the Lord at last rose in His might and seized the scourge to drive out of the Temple the brood of vipers and adders. How terrific was his fight against the Jewish poison. Today, after two thousand years, with deepest emotion I recognize more profoundly than ever before the fact that it was for this that He had to shed his blood upon the Cross. As a Christian I have no duty to allow myself to be cheated, but I have the duty to be a fighter for truth and justice… And if there is anything which could demonstrate that we are acting rightly, it is the distress that daily grows. For as a Christian I have also a duty to my own people. And when I look on my people I see them work and work and toil and labor, and at the end of the week they have only for their wages wretchedness and misery. When I go out in the morning and see these men standing in their queues and look into their pinched faces, then I believe I would be no Christian, but a very devil, if I felt no pity for them, if I did not, as did our Lord two thousand years ago, turn against those by whom today this poor people are plundered and exposed.
—Adolf Hitler, speech on April 12, 1922, published in My New Order

I am now as before a Catholic and will always remain so
—Adolph Hitler, to Gen. Gerhard Engel, 1941

  138. Rodan says:

    Bluedog49,
Hitler used the name Christian but he wasn’t. In fact most of the Nazi leadership were Neo-Pagans. Hitler claimed Jesus was Aryan. Jesus was Jewish. By denying Jesus’s Jewishness, that right there elimates it as Christian.

  146. criticalthinker says:

A little known fact about GITMO is that most of the people there were not picked up by the United States military, but were reported for money!

When the US offered money for reporting “insurgents”, criminals saw a means to get rid of their enemies and make some cash at the same time.

That is why so few of the detainees at GITMO have even been brought to a kangaroo court, yet alone a real one, because the fact that they were not “caught in the act” would come out.

The LIE that GITMO is full of terrorists “caught on the battlefield” (what battlefield?), is far from the TRUTH that GITMO is full of people who were “reported for money”!

  147. Rodan says:

  148. Bluedog49 says:

Hey Rodan, we can continue this exercise in futility as long as you like, but all it does is demonstrate that both muslims and christians are standard bearers for cultures of death.

  149. JesusChrist_GodofWAR says:

Rodan, this is why I am called Jesus Christ God of WAR.

I, Jesus, can’t stand anyone who uses my name and my religion for their own petty small purposes. When I said LOVE others, I meant it.

I DID NOT mean you have the right to go out and slaughter the innocent masses just because they did it to you in some distant past. Other’s past actions DO NOT justify your own. Follow My teachings and understand the nature of love, peace, and helping (NOT killing) others.

    Got it?

  150. Bluedog49 says:

Rodan: “Why does the Left control the Media?”

You’re kidding, right? Please be kidding.

  151. Rodan says:

“where millions of natives were massacred in the name of repukenican values.”

They were killed by both Democarts and Republicans.
hey let’s not forget that the KKK was an armed wing of the Democratic party.
Plus our Spanish ancestors killed the Indians too. Us Spanish people have blood on our hands.
In Fact the Spaniards learned Holy war from Islam, when in 711 the Muslims invaded and killed 3 Million Roman and Gothic Spaniards.

  152. Rodan says:

How about Mohammed Prophet of War.
He massacred a Jewish tribe in the Kaybar valley in Arabia. He also wiped out a Christian tribe in Norther Arabia.

  155. Bluedog49 says:

  158. Jake says:

For the record, here are the full questions / answers about Gitmo from today’s press briefing:

Q Secretary Gates’ concerns about Gitmo. Did they reach the President?

MR. SNOW: No. I received some guidance from the Secretary of Defense’s office, which is that it never did reach the President. He had some concerns, and illegal issues were resolved. And he deferred to the Attorney General on the legal issues. And beyond that, I’m going to kick it all over to DoD. But it did not reach the President.

Q Why is it that the President’s stated desire to close Guantanamo Bay cannot be turned into some kind of plan of action?

MR. SNOW: Because there are legal constraints, and those are the things that the Attorney General had made clear in terms of the inadvisability of putting Guantanamo detainees on continental U.S. soil. We have tried as best we can to move those who are in Guantanamo either to their home nations, or nations where they are wanted for other trial or justice dispensation. But we also have laid down the benchmark that you also have to be able to assure that they’re going to be treated humanely.

Very few countries want these people back, and, therefore, what you have to do is to work through a procedure where you do, in fact, bring them to justice. But the President made clear back in September that he would love to be able to shut it down, but unfortunately the circumstances do not presently permit.

    April.

Q So, realistically, are you saying that Guantanamo Bay will not be shut down before the end of his presidency?

MR. SNOW: I doubt it, no. I don’t think it will.

My god, how to these Remoronicans function considering they must continually be pooping in their pants out of fear of some *****heads living in a cave on the other side of the planet. I bet if I typed “boo” in all capitals, they have the vapors and collapse.

Hey knuckleheads, Bush is going down as the worst President EVAR, while FDR deserves his monument on the Potomac and spot at Mt. Rushmore. Also you Restupidicans, did you know that in contrast to your Dear Decider, who still doesn’t have a plan for Iraq and whose DOD chief threatened of fire anyone that tried to discuss a post war Iraq, that FDR’s staff started planning for a post war Germany BEFORE Pearl Harbor.

Why do most of the debates devolve into religious fanaticism of one form or another?

This has nothing to do with religion. Nothing.

Terrorism is not race or religion based. Many use such as justifications for the heinous actions they take, but that happens across religions and races and therefore is not indicative of or specific to any religion or race and thereby completely irrelevant.

How is this concept so confusing? If we do not resist attempts to frame the debates in religious or race contexts then we will never make any progress whatsoever and will only waste time discussing the irrelevant.

Religion is not a problem at all and has no place in the national dialogue. Faith is a personal choice and only becomes an issue when it is used for manipulation and/or oppression. But for that to occur the manipulated and/or oppressed have to acquiesce to it. We are the land of the free for christsakes (pun intended).

I believe that if we refuse to acknowledge religious interjections into politics or government then its influence and diversion disappears.

    Worth pondering at least.

    re#159 Jake

You have a failure of thinking skills to ever consider:

    1. Firing a nuclear weapon from your country to another nuclear armed country will result in your country being hit with nuclear weapons.

    2. Nuclear weapons require sophisticated intercontinental ballistic weapons to be delivered from half way across the planet to the United States and only Russia has a missle that can reach the continental United States.

    3. The explosions required to start a nuclear chain reaction must precisely focused and precisely timed, so the “suit case” nuclear bomb scenario of terrorists smuggling one in the United States is pure fantasy.

    4. The United States would have no foreign terrorist problem, just like Sweden has no foreign terrorist problem, because their military is not in any foreign countries. If you REALLY wanted to be free from foreign terrorism, you would be advocating that our military stay within our own borders.

The United States is full of scared “chicken littles” who do not understand that “foreign terrorists”, are antibodies generated in reponse to the disease of “foreign imperialism”!

One LPG tanker filled with Hydrogen Cyanide, detonated in LA harbor could kill more Americans then have died since this nation was founded.

  181. Bluedog49 says:

How could you be worried about bombs detonating in an American port and still be for spending $6 billion a month in Iraq. For one month’s Iraq bill, we could outfit every single U.S. port with state-of-the-art radiation and chemical screening technology, put anti-missle defense and armed air marshals on every commercial jet and shore up the security around every chemical and nuclear plant in the nation. What utter fools you Bush cultists are.

  182. JRoyale says:

    Jake,

You obviously never studied Hitler. He’s plans were rather grandiose or insane, if you prefer.

One way in which Zweites Buch differs from Mein Kampf is that in Zweites Buch, Hitler added a fourth stage to the Stufenplan. In Zweites Buch, Hitler announced that around 1980 the final struggle for world domination would take place between the United States and the now Greater Germany allied with the British Empire. The most spectacular difference between Mein Kampf and Zweites Buch is in Hitler’s views regarding the United States. In Mein Kampf, Hitler declared that Germany’s most dangerous opponent on the international scene was the Soviet Union. In Zweites Buch, Hitler declared that for immediate purposes, the Soviet Union was still the most dangerous opponent, but that in the long-term, the most dangerous potential opponent was the United States. Beyond that, Hitler’s views on the United States changed dramatically between 1924 and 1928.

    Link

Furthermore, the Nazis had the capability to develop atomic arms AND their rocket program was far more advanced then the US’s. In fact, many of our best post-war rocket engineers were German.

bin Laden is hiding in a cave. BOO!

As for the dangerous of Global Warming: It is clearly a threat to billions of people. Fortunately, the tide rises slow enough that most people can get out of the way. It will, however, be outrageously expensive to deal with.

  183. Rich Porter says:

Dick Cheney and Karl Rove are from Alpha Centauri. They have a plan to take over the world. In fact they are quietly planting chips on babies. Haliburton is a front for space aliens.

  184. Rich Porter says:

Dick Cheney with the Aliens is causing Gloabl warming. The aliens are using gamma rays to heat up the Earth.

  185. Jake says:

For the record, I don’t “worry” about anything — but I think my point has been made that the terrorist threat is real, not imaginary — I completely supported Bush signing the the SAFE Port Act which authorized $3.4 billion including the development of high-tech inspection equipment so customs agents can check cargo containers for dangerous materials without having to open them. It requires radiation-detection technology at 22 of the nation’s busiest ports by the end of next year.

“We’ll do everything we can to prevent an attack, but if the terrorists succeed in launching an attack, we’ll be ready to respond,” Bush said.

The president said the bill codifies the Container Security Initiative, which deploys U.S. inspectors to dozens of foreign ports on five continents where they can screen cargo bound for the United States. He said it also codifies the Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism, a joint public-private sector initiative in which private shippers agree to improve their own security measures and in return can receive benefits, including expedited clearance through U.S. ports.

Bush also noted that the bill provides additional authority for the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office, which was established to guard against the threat of terrorists smuggling a nuclear device into the country. And the act requires the Department of Homeland Security to establish a plan to speed the resumption of trade in the event of a terrorist attack on a U.S. port or waterway.

“This bill makes clear that the federal government has the authority to clear waterways, identify cleanup equipment and re-establish the flow of commerce following a terrorist attack,” the president said.

The administration has spent about $10 billion so far to enhance security at the nation’s ports since the attacks of September 11, 2001. About 65 percent of cargo, that considered most high-risk, is screened for nuclear or radiological materials. The Homeland Security Department aims to increase that number to 80 percent by the end of the year and to almost 100 percent by the end of 2007.

Yeah, I’m not that worried about fantasy al Qaeda ICBM or suitcase nukes either. The shipping container sized, or even truck sized, nukes OTOH could be detonated at ports and/or smuggled across the border and easily kill more Americans than Hitler did.

Two problems with that statement, Jake:

    1) What, exactly, is our government doing about this problem? Are our borders closed? Were they ever closed at any time during this ‘War on Terror’…even immediately after 9/11?

    2) Your qualification of what concerns you still doesn’t take into account criticalthinker’s last point…that the reason the U.S. even needs to be concerned about this at all is because its predatory foreign policy continually generates terrorists as a natural response.

  187. Jake says:

    JRoyale:

I didn’t have to study Hitler — I lived through WWII, son — I’m just curious how many Americans you think would be killed by container-sized nukes at the following ports:

    1. Los Angeles, CA
    2. Long Beach, CA
    3. New York, NY and NJ
    4. Houston, TX
    5. Seattle, WA
    6. Charleston, SC
    7. Oakland, CA
    8. Norfolk, VA
    9. Baltimore, MD
    10. Tacoma, WA
    11. New Orleans, LA
    12. Miami, FL
    13. Savannah, GA
    14. Port of South Louisiana, LA
    15. Beaumont, TX
    16. Portland, OR
    17. Jacksonville, FL
    18. Corpus Christie, TX
    19. Port Everglades, FL
    20. Philadelphia, PA

Keep in mind that these 20 targets would also be a major blow to the U.S. economy as well, since the for account for over three-fourths of U.S. trade imports / exports. If these 20 targets could be coordinated with mid-day truck-sized nuke attacks on Washington, D.C., Chicago, Phoenix, San Diego, Dallas, and San Antonio — yes, Virginia, they could easily kill more Americans than Hitler ever dreamed of killing.

I will not repost your post, but I disagree that Hitler was at all capable in the process of producing Nukes.

Hitler had a single problem – he developed policies that in the end made impossible any advancement in the enrichment processes because of his obsession with suppressing the Jewish religion and the Jewish people.

By the late 30’s, just about every top flight nuclear scientist from Germany had left for England or the United States. They were quickly followed from those in the rest of Europe.

In short, Hitler was better then GWB at shooting himself in the foot!

  193. Jake says:

If anyone (NOT on the “Ignore List”) has a different question, please let me know. However, no one should still have a question of what exactly our government is doing about this problem at ports — see link above, and you can easily read up more on the SAFE Port Act on-line.

  194. Bluedog49 says:

After spending over $500 billion on a useless and disasterous war in Iraq, the Bushies have spent less than $10 billion to help secure our own ports, but most of the technology has not even been deployed 6 years after the 9-11 attack.

Only an unamerican, traitorous Bush cultist could brag about something like that. It’s a disgrace. The Bush administration is a disgrace. And, its mindless, authoritarian drone cultists are a disgrace.

Two problems with that statement, Jake:

    1) You didn’t answer my questions. You made a stab at answering the first one, but didn’t manage to follow though, while you’ve again completely ignored the second one (just like you did when criticalthinker posed it the first time).

Now, if you want to count that in your ‘win’ column, go right ahead…but you’re fooling only yourself.

    2) Funny how you think that acknowledging my questions counts as ‘ignoring’ me. You’re not too bright, are you?

So Jake must be pissed about pushing through to have Dubai Ports World take over security for our ports, especially considering that 2 of the 9/11 hijackers were from Dubai and that the 9/11 commission report states that Dubai helped fund 9/11 and he must be pissed that Haliburton is moving their, right?

  197. Jake says:

  198. JRoyale says:

    Jake

Riiiiggghhhtttt… why don’t we just worry about Al Queda donating 1000 bombs in our 1000 largest cities. Or maybe a million bombs, or a trillion.

And I’m glad that Bush finally started to take port security seriously, but my question would be, why didn’t Bush make it a priority on 9/12/2001, instead of waiting for Congress to ram it down his throat some 4 years later?

In fact, why did Bush ignore all the pre 9/11 warnings about Al Queda? Was he pulling an FDR (who some (not me tho’) claim baited the Japs to attack)?

Al Queda can (and must) be fought, but fighting them in Iraq is and was just plain stupid. Mostly because they weren’t in Iraq in 2002 and the ones that are there now will quickly be eliminated by the Iraqis once we leave.

  199. TripMaster Monkey says:

    Jake sez:

I can answer that one…I went on the list after I asked this question, which Jake apparently couldn’t or wouldn’t answer. Go ahead and read the thread…it’s all there.

Of course, I’m betting that no one cares about your “ignore list”, Jake. Hell…I don’t care…I don’t see why anyone else should. All I care about is that you not be allowed to lie about why I’m on it. I’m on it because you can’t keep up…plain and simple…and I’m betting that that’s why everyone else on it is there as well.

(Oh, and I don’t mean to tell you how to conduct your business, but you acknowledged me again…sorta obviates that whole ‘ignore’ thing, don’t ‘cha think?)
