Attorney General Alberto Gonzales appeared on radio in Seattle this morning to defend the Justice Department’s decision to fire eight U.S. attorneys. When asked why former U.S. attorney John McKay of Washington state was ousted, Gonzales responded:
Listen, we made a decision at the Department as to the appropriate way forward. There was nothing improper about the decision here … There’s no evidence whatsoever, and it’s reckless and irresponsible to allege that these decisions were based in any way on improper motives.
CLICK HERE TO LISTEN TO GONZALES
Gonzales’ statements are distortions. McKay revealed earlier this month that Rep. Doc Hasting’s (R-WA) office contacted him and pressured him as to the status of an ongoing investigation into voter fraud in the midst of a tight gubernatorial election. Emails released this week show that then-Gonzales’ chief of staff Kyle Sampson touted McKay for a federal judgeship, saying that it is “highly unlikely we could do better in Seattle.” But one month later, McKay was listed as one of the seven attorneys in the process of being “pushed out.” “What happened between those dates to reverse McKay’s political fortunes is a bit of a mystery.”
Gonzales’ defiant tone comes in the midst of a last ditch attempt to avoid being fired himself. This week, Gonzales is touring the country in an attempt to get away from Washington, as he “appeared to be launching a campaign to save his job by repairing relations with prosecutors in the field and reaching out to political supporters.”
Good luck Gonzo, you’re gonna need it.
March 23rd, 2007 at 5:19 pmdeny deny deny, distort distort distort… “pay no attention to the man behind that curtain!”
March 23rd, 2007 at 5:19 pm… i don’t care what the evidence shows, none of it is true… “strength through unity, unity through faith…. i’m a God-fearing American, and i’m gaddamned PROUD OF IT!…. seig heil!”
Gonzo is launching his world-famous lunch meeting extravaganza and he’s one mean little pit-bull, let me tell ya! What an embarrassment to his office, our country and his dear, sweet little Christian mother. I guess Gonzo is more concerned about his job than the fact his mother will probably burn in hell for supporting such an evil panty-waste as her son.
March 23rd, 2007 at 5:20 pmLike his boss, Gonzo is too stupid to understand that that arrogant shit won’t flush. There is too much evidence to the contrary.
March 23rd, 2007 at 5:20 pmLying weasel – the only friend he has is the other lying weasel in the White House oval office.
March 23rd, 2007 at 5:21 pmI wish they’d both STFU and get out.
There’s no evidence whatsoever, and it’s reckless and irresponsible to allege that these decisions were based in any way on improper motives. — Speedy Gonzales
If that is the case then you should be ok with testimony under oath and a full investigation into it. Like you freekazoids saying about warrantless wiretaps ” If you did nothing wrong, what are you so worried about?”
March 23rd, 2007 at 5:23 pmLike his boss, Gonzo is too stupid to understand that that arrogant sh*t won’t flush. There is too much evidence to the contrary. This is America Gonzo. The rule of law and blind justice are real.
March 23rd, 2007 at 5:23 pm“reckless and irresponsible” – isn’t that also the way they describe any criticism of the war in Iraq? You’d think with all the money they’ve looted from the treasury, they could pay for some new talking points.
March 23rd, 2007 at 5:23 pmOMG ~ He’s so cute! Looks like an altar boy in that photo! Wow!
March 23rd, 2007 at 5:23 pmI’m impressed!
Now, resign and go get a job as a hand model.
You’re more qualified for that than any lawyering shit.
He was on in Denver this morning as well… making the rounds. Kept saying over and over that the ‘reasonable offer’ for Rove to meet was enough to assure the public everything is ok… I’m not sure HOW since the public has no access to the closed door meetings.
he kept going back on himself saying at one moment “everything has proven that is was normal” and the next moment “when the truth comes out the public will understand”. So the truth is not out yet????
March 23rd, 2007 at 5:24 pmNo need to read the Troll’s posts, this pretty much sums them up:
Obligatory contrary statement that will hopefully bait most of the other posters, etc., etc.
March 23rd, 2007 at 5:24 pmReckless and irresponsible? I can deal with being called “reckless and irresponsible.” Now how about those 18 days of e-mails, pal?
March 23rd, 2007 at 5:25 pmSounds like Cheney style patented rhetoric.
I wonder who is writing it for them?
Why not read this while you guys are at it…

March 23rd, 2007 at 5:26 pmFor you members of the Carol Lam Fan Club, this tidbit from the San Diego Union Tribune re: Congressman Darrell Issa
“The campaign of innuendo and the conspiracy theories put forth by Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Rahm Emanuel on the dismissal of U.S. Attorneys has not produced evidence of any wronging doing in the dismissal of U.S. Attorneys. Sen. Schumer and Rep. Emanuel have turned a blind eye to a failure to prosecute even those who traffic in human beings and misled the American people for partisan gains. They need to either stand by their assertion that failure to prosecute human smugglers is not serious or they need to retract their statements.†— Rep. Issa, 3/22/07
In our “little†San Diego newspaper (The North County Times), Issa was complaining about the lack of attention Ms. Lam displayed re: human trafficking and illegals aliens in 2004.
So….. Sen. Chuck – while you are to be commended for your loyalty and allegiance to YOUR Party, get your facts straight.
March 23rd, 2007 at 5:26 pmMore “best defense is a rude and vicious offense” strategy. I’m still waiting for them to haul out “national security”, though. When all else fails . . .
March 23rd, 2007 at 5:27 pmQuestioning the Der Fuhrer is Vebotten! Violators will be tortured because I said it was legal
Now all go away like good litlle Nazies and burn some law books, so no one will ever know what the law is except what I tell them.
March 23rd, 2007 at 5:27 pm“reckless and irresponsible”? Sounds like a guilty man to me.
Although if there’s anyone who would know “reckless and irresponsible” it would be a Bush administration official.
March 23rd, 2007 at 5:27 pmDoes he not realize how deep this doo-doo is that he’s standing in? We’re just getting started here. It’s not just the U.S. attorney firing thing. It’s also his asking Bush to shut down an investigation of warrantless wiretaps that would have put his ass in the wringer. Bush denied security clearances to the investigators to keep them from proceeding.
March 23rd, 2007 at 5:29 pmGo fu*k yourself Gonzo!
March 23rd, 2007 at 5:29 pmValiant anus, thanks for bringing Darrell Issa’s complaints to our attention. He’s a thoroughly trusted authority to thinking people around here.
Oh, damn, was I in sacasm mode again?
March 23rd, 2007 at 5:31 pmoh yeah Al… that’s really gonna win people over!
March 23rd, 2007 at 5:31 pm#16 vv
It’s old, discredited, and off-topic.
March 23rd, 2007 at 5:32 pmIf Gonzo does not want to do the decent thing and resign from office, I guess he’ll just have to resign himself to defending his position from attack, for the next two years. Is he ready to do that?
March 23rd, 2007 at 5:33 pmGonzo better be applying for jobs as he goes around the US talking. Kyle Sampson will testify under oath and the Congress has more damaging information then Bush released. Yes not all Republicans are part of the corrupt group. Gonzo will have to say Kyle is a liar and we already know Gonzo has lied under oath. So who do we believe a former liar or a first timer. Gonzo didn’t give the lawyers the time of day and even fired lawyers with excellent records but he lied about them. Now lets see who’s career gets destroyed pay back is something isn’t it.
March 23rd, 2007 at 5:34 pmSpudge_Boy, I think your comments would be more literate if you could type one sentence with out the “f-word” in each post. While I do (sort of) agree with your sentiment, I don’t see why my eyes have to be assaulted with the language.
March 23rd, 2007 at 5:35 pmviolent anus,
Is there a point in your day that you aren’t carrying water for Alberto? Is it that you were promised a cushy tushy job if you continued carrying water for your fuhrer?
March 23rd, 2007 at 5:36 pm#16 I’m sure that will be one of the many things to be investigated in after the testifying under oath takes place.
March 23rd, 2007 at 5:37 pm#8 Jones:
“reckless and irresponsible†– isn’t that also the way they describe any criticism of the war in Iraq?
Yeah. Such irresponsible talk also emboldens the Terra-ists. So just STFU, wouldja? Why do you hate Amur’kah so much, you treasonous ally of CommieSympLiberoIslamoFascism?

March 23rd, 2007 at 5:37 pmGoodbye Gonzo! Now who’s going to argue in favor of torturing unaccused prisoners?
March 23rd, 2007 at 5:37 pmGonzales’ defiant tone…
performing “in character”… tough guy trying to be
a convincing LIAR…
it’s what they do…
March 23rd, 2007 at 5:37 pmExcellent Mr. Gonzales! Then you have absolutely nothing to worry about in regard to formal hearings (including oaths and transcripts) and evidence review. In fact, with everything being as above board as you imply, then you should want the investigation to go ahead and be as public as possible because if things are as you imply then the opposition will end up with huge egg on their face.

And is this the same Darrel Issa that had been arrested twice for automobile theft and once for illegal possession of a firearm?
Yeah, go ahead. Use more references from the likes of Issa.
It will only help to further discredit your feeble attempts at spin.
March 23rd, 2007 at 5:43 pmThe Top 10 Reasons Gonzales Must Go:
1. Lying Under Oath
2. Purging Prosecutors
3. Misusing the Patriot Act’s National Security Letters
4. Authorizing Illegal NSA Domestic Surveillance
5. Enabling John Yoo and Unchecked Presidential War Powers
6. Rendering the Geneva Conventions “Quaint”
7. Supporting Military Commissions and the End of Habeas Corpus
8. Blessing Unprecedented Expansion of Presidential Signing Statements
9. Facilitating a CIA Leak Cover-Up
10. Gutting Minority Voting Rights

Has anyone done any background research about how Gonzo was allowed to dropp out of the Air Force Academy after only two years and wasn’t required to make up the rest of his committment to the AF? He quit because the science courses were too hard andthen went to Rice Univ. Anyone ever seen a Gonzo’s College Transcript or Diploma or Law Degree? You know like, Bush’s Diploma’s and his Thesis for his so-called Masters in Business

March 23rd, 2007 at 5:45 pmRove, Miers, and Gonzales don’t want oaths or transcripts for their upcoming hearings because they want to reserve the right to keep on lying. The “spying on Americans” portion of the Patriot Act held that people “who had nothing to hide” should fear nothing. The neocon horde should be held to the same standard–those “who have nothing to hide” have nothing to fear, right?
March 23rd, 2007 at 5:48 pmValient: Darrell Issa? That’s funny. During a trip to the Middle East, Issal announced that terrorist group Hezbollah is legitimate and has never been involved with terrorist activities, according to the Teheran Times, IRNA (the official Iranian news agency), and the Beirut Daily Star.
Nice source, the guy who thinks Hezbollah is not a terrorist organization! Or were you just joking?
March 23rd, 2007 at 5:48 pmFredo Gonzales has Politicized the Justice Dept. with a lot of help along the way of course.
I noticed yesterday during Arlen’s solution to the “Showdown” that his legal counsel who snuck in that little provision to the Patriot Act that bypassed Senate confirmation for the USA’s was sitting right behind him. Mike O’Neill STILL has his job apparently. Figures

I believe that you can have a captivating conversation with someone without calling them names, or needing an excuse to curse for no reason other than, “it feels good to curse”.
My skin is thick enough thank you, after all, the person that I voted for in the past two elections had the election stolen from him by the Emporer currently in power. If that doesn’t give one thicker skin, so be it.

March 23rd, 2007 at 6:00 pmMissile shield: Steinmeier warns USA against unilateral action
Berlin. Federal Foreign Minister Franz-Walter Steinmeier has reiterated his warning to the United States against proceeding unilaterally in setting up a missile-defence shield in Eastern and Central Europe. In the Bundestag, Steinmeier said that the government in Washington should carefully consider the price of such action. The danger of dividing Europe would be a very, very high price, he added. The American plan to build parts of a system to counter missiles – from Iran, for example – in Poland and the Czech Republic are the subject of controversy with the governing coalition in Germany. The SPD rejects the very idea of new missiles in Europe on principle; Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) would like the discussion of the plan to be conducted under the auspices of NATO.
Basically Bush shove your missiles, we dont want russian missiles aimed at us when there all aimed at you

Saying goshdarn it makes a person look like they are so scared to use a swear word that they must think there is someone or something looking over their shoulder!

March 23rd, 2007 at 6:10 pmWhat a pathetically predictable strategy.
Those who would question the administration are ‘irresponsible’.
It’s yet another variation on the same putrid song the neocons have been singing since 2000.
Questioning the 2000 election is ‘irresponsible’.
Questioning the government’s explanation of 9/11 is ‘irresponsible’.
Questioning the connection between 9/11 and Saddam is ‘irresponsible’.
Questioning the evidence of WMDs in Iraq is ‘irresponsible’.
Questioning the plan for victory in Iraq is ‘irresponsible’.
Questioning the treatment of prisoners in Gitmo is ‘irresponsible’.
Questioning the government’s use of secret prisons and “extraordinary rendition” is ‘irresponsible’.
Questioning the 2004 election is ‘irresponsible’.
Questioning the government’s ridiculous open-ended commitment in Iraq is “irresponsible”.
Questioning the “surge” is ‘irresponsible’.
Questioning the attorney firings is ‘irresponsible’.
etc., etc., etc.
(And yes, I know I left out a bunch of stuff. This list is just off the top of my head.)
The point is, I’m getting pretty sick of being told that my objections to this administration’s psychotic policies are ‘irresponsible, despite the fact that I’m proven right again and again…and again.
March 23rd, 2007 at 6:11 pmHow is it irresponsible to question such things?

It’s tough, but you can’t shield your child from other people’s language. You can teach her your own belief that cussing is wrong, but you can’t stop other people from cussing, especially when they’re feeling passionate or ticked off. Eventually, she’ll likely come to her own conclusions about whether or not cussing is a sign of ignorance or perhaps being used very deliberately for shock effect of simply for emphasis.
And, no offense, but your own belief that cussing online is non-productive is not something anyone has given you the right to project on to other people.

I do. She wants on it, but I don’t let her. She gets enough drivel just by watching Cartoon Network. I do not respect any troll that toes the Bush company line.
March 23rd, 2007 at 6:18 pmah, so that means the reasons for the changes were honest, ethical and legal, so that means there is nothing anyone in the White House or in the DOJ could say, or testify to under oath that could be taken otherwise…..so why aren’t Miers and Rove standing at the committee’s door clamoring to testify?
March 23rd, 2007 at 6:19 pmIf it’s “irresponsible and reckless” to question the firings, what does that make lying about the reasons? Cruel, shameful and very very stupid!
March 23rd, 2007 at 6:22 pmSo, are you implying that my 18 year old and my 11 year old aren’t decent citizens?
To me politics are adult activities. So, while my 11 year old is allowed to go to Nogin.com and Disney.com. She is not allowed to stand over my shoulder while I play adult games. Just like she is allowed to watch Disney movies, but not porn.
Politics are for adults. Dragging kids into politics is something Bush does for photo ops. And I didn’t like it when Pelosi did it either.

March 23rd, 2007 at 6:52 pmkaty,
Anybody under the delusion that they are having a discussion with a troll is being chummy in my book. As I have stated, there are conservatives that want to discuss topics and then there are trolls. They don’t want to discuss anything. So, when somebody starts telling progs to back off a troll, so they can have a discussion with said troll, which happened earlier with Proud Dem, I consider that chummy.
I will always play whack-a-troll. It is how I keep my blood pressure down. Just ask my doctor. I don’t have high blood pressure, because I don’t hold myself back. My girlfriend has high blood pressure, because she is the “Oh don’t upset people” type.
March 23rd, 2007 at 6:52 pmHey Spudge; When I was 11, I was politically aware. I was seeing on tv 1963 the civil rights movement and saw MLK deliver his ‘I have a dream’ speech at the Lincoln memorial. I also saw at that time photos in the news of Buddhist monks burning themselves alive in Saigon in protest of the repressive regime of Ngo Dinh Diem.
I’m not trying to tell you how to raise your kids, all I am saying is that since I was aware of stuff happening when I was that age, your kids might be more aware than you might give them credit for. peace.

must have been a different thread… i haven’t been around much today…
good on your blood pressure, and i understand your sentiment and logic, but, man, you could stand to lighten up a bit :-)
just sayin’…
March 23rd, 2007 at 7:00 pmLike the frightened German soldier in Saving Private Ryan, turning to each man in turn, trying desperately to say something that will trigger compassion and forgiveness…
… not to worry, Speedy, you will get to run away.. but nevertheless, you will be going away.
March 23rd, 2007 at 7:01 pmMy girlfriend has high blood pressure, because she is the “Oh don’t upset people†type.
Opposites attract. It’s opposite, in general, in our house. I don’t like to upset people – I’m the moderator in my extended family – but she doesn’t give two shits. On the other hand, she worries about lots of things like money and crowds but I just won’t worry about such things.
March 23rd, 2007 at 7:01 pmUncle Ho,
I never said my daughter wasn’t politically aware. She definitely does not like neocons and the George W Bush cabal that is ruining our country. What I meant was that she doesn’t stand over my shoulder and read my blog postings or take part in political discussions with me and my friends.
March 23rd, 2007 at 7:02 pmWhen I was 11, I got a new banana bike for christmas and when the snow melted in the spring I promptly crashed it going down a steep hill and ended up in the lake! My Dad helped me put it and myself back together and it served me well until 10 speeds came along!
Oh and a guy named Nixon was in the news and streaking was quite the fad.
March 23rd, 2007 at 7:04 pmThat’s not going to happen katy. This is my personality. I am the technical media manager for a global networking company. I am an out going speak my mind kind of person and there are only a very few people in my field that can do what I can do. I am the company cheerleader if you will.
The same goes for politics. There are too many people that don’t speak there mind. We are in the situation we are in, because enough people didn’t speak up before the 2000 elections. I knew this country was in trouble before Bush took office.
People are now starting to wake up. But, I can say that I have personally changed the minds of every person I work with and all of my friends. The only people that keep going back to the dark side are my parents. They were raised to be republicans and they can’t realize that they are supporting somebody who is not a republican.
If you saw me at an anti-war rally, you would see that I am one of the loudest people you know or will know. Sorry.
March 23rd, 2007 at 7:10 pmClassic.
I didn’t have a lake, but I crashed my Huffy Thunder Trail into the gutter a lot. I remember the name, because I saved for a year to get it.
March 23rd, 2007 at 7:12 pmThe “spying on Americans†portion of the Patriot Act held that people “who had nothing to hide†should fear nothing. The neocon horde should be held to the same standard–those “who have nothing to hide†have nothing to fear, right?

I don’t have kids, but I think now that, as a kid, I wish my parents had talked more about politics. And I wish they had made me take piano lessons. And I wish they made me learn another language. Alas, I had to do those things as an adult – lol not very well either!
But really, if you talk to your kids then the chances are they will tell you what they are interested in. If you don’t talk to your kids then you’ll just roommates.

March 23rd, 2007 at 7:16 pmHave a good everyone. Wife’s home and it’s time to party.
March 23rd, 2007 at 7:19 pmYikes,
I talk to my kids all the time, but there is talking with the kids time and there is I am having an adult discussion or blogging time. Just because I don’t let her stand over my shoulder or late her join in a heated discussion with a bunch of adults, doesn’t mean I treat her like a mushroom.
March 23rd, 2007 at 7:24 pmHave a good one.

Well Uncle Ho, it’s been decided that we’re going to a REAL war protest, instead of the rally — now that they understand the difference. Oy. :)
March 23rd, 2007 at 8:42 pmWhere are you headed to protest, Zooey?
March 23rd, 2007 at 8:48 pmThe smirk Gonzo usually bestows on us is similar to Bushits and Chaney (although Chaney has evil written all over it). In the case of Gonzo, as was the case with an incompetent boss I once had,I submit that it is due to an awareness of being way above his level of competence and thus feeling insecure about his status. He may have gotten a law degree from Harvard under some minority program, but he remains a mediocrity. I am afraid that his socioeconomic status from birth and his minority ethnicity has left him quite emotionally scarred. These factors have turned him into what in spanish we call UN TITERE, a string puppet who will do whatever his handler wants. I believe he is a disgrace to us hispanics. He should look real hard to find the sense of honor which he misplaced somewhere in his long climb up from the barrio. Adios and don’t let la puerta hit you in el culo.

We were heading to Spokane, but it turned out that was just an Obama rally, so we’re going to an actual war protest in Coeur d’Alene in a couple weeks.
Imagine that. Protests against the war in reddest Idaho. :-)

Tony Snow Defends the “Generous Offerâ€
By: SilentPatriot @ 6:10 PM – PDT
It must be tough being Tony Snow. He literally has to stand there every day and defend the indefensible with a straight face. Jon dissects SnowJob’s artful defense of the “generous offer,” or as they called it on Wednesday, the “reasonable proposal.

On a personal note, we at C&L wish Tony the very best. He’s having surgery today to remove a growth in his lower abdomen as a precautionary measure. Tony overcame colon cancer back in 2005 and we wish him a successful surgery and speedy recovery.

No, your snarkiness, you’ve got that wrong. We’ve discredited that argument here and plenty of MSM reports have discredited it, as well. But, go ahead and repeat it as often as you must, if it’s all you’ve got.
Southern California Ranked Among Highest in Immigration Prosecutions. For the last two months of available data, June and July 2006, the Southern California Judicial District ranked second in the number of immigration prosecutions. In 2005, 97.7% of the immigration cases referred to the Southern California U.S Attorney’s office were prosecuted.
Southern California Ranked High in ATF Prosecutions. In 2004, the last available data, the U.S. Attorney’s office for Southern California ranked 9th out of the 94 judicial districts in the country in percentage of ATF cases referred that were prosecuted. In 2001, before Lam took over, the same office ranked 62nd.
Southern California Was in the Top Ten in Prosecuting FBI Cases Each Year. From 2002 through 2005, U.S. Attorney Carol Lam’s office ranked in the top ten of prosecuting crimes referred to it by the FBI. She ranked second in 2002 and 2004,third in 2003, and ninth in 2005, the year of the Duke Cunningham investigation.
Southern California Ranked High on DEA Prosecutions. In 2002 and 2003, Lam ranked 3rd and 5th respectively in the percentage of cases referred by the DEA that her office prosecuted. She ranked 16th in 2004, still prosecuting 89% of the cases referred to her.
Lam made a conscious decision to devote her efforts to the big immigration busts instead of going after low-level coyotes. Quality over quantity. So, raw numbers, which are about all that someone like Issa can comprehend, didn’t look as good. But, the impact on illegal immigration was the same or better.
