  1. HeartlandLiberal Says:

RealPlayer has a horrible record of abusing its users, of spamming, you name it. This record stretches back years. Many in the tech community, because of his, absolutely will not install and use RealPlayer, and risk compromising their systems. Just google ‘real player abuse privacy spam’ and start reading. Here is one important privacy sites notes from some years ago when this was at its worst: http://www.junkbusters.com/real.html

  2. Deniz Yeter Says:

More BS from TP with Hillary first and Obama next to last. I feel like I’m reading Fox.com. SHE”S A LOSER.

    Comment by Bill Miller — March 24, 2007 @ 2:41 am

    It’s in alphabetical order

Clinton, Dodd, Edwards, etc etc, that’s why Obama and Richardson are last

  3. Zooey Says:

TP, I hope you’re going to have other threads today, as well. There’s no way I can watch this forum with dial up.

Please, will you post the questions asked by TP commenters?
Just attribute them by initials and state, for privacy reasons.

  4. Sharon Says:

Please, TP have some other thread’s as well….My old iMac said no to this, can’t join in…Blessings

  5. ladydem Says:

Yeah, this mandatory download of realplayer is not cool. Why do we have to download it?

  6. TripMaster Monkey Says:

Have to agree with the prevailing sentiment here…I only downloaded RealPlayer for this video, and I plan on erasing it and scrubbing away all traces as soon as it’s done.

In the future, can we consider some other options for streaming video? Kthx.

Here’s another thought….a live audio stream would consume much less bandwidth, and enable some of our more bandwidth-challenged friends to join the debate (after all, I don’t need to see Hillary’s mug to hear what she has to say… ^_^).

  7. Joan Bindner Says:

It says “Thanks for my question” when I came onto the site, but I never submitted a question. It doesn’t appear that I can now.

  8. Brooklynite Says:

Seriously, I can’t tell you how annoyed I am at this Real Player BS. Thought Iwas getting an unobtrusive plugin, and instead got the whole works, AND they want private information.

Please, don’t ever do this again. I’ve scrubbed RealPlayer out of my system already, and I won’t be watching the clips.

I expect better from you guys, I trust ThinkProgress, and this has seriously aggravated me.

  9. RealPlayerSucks Says:

I couldn’t agree more with #1. I hate Real Player passionately and will not refuse to participate in watching this event if Real Player is my only option for watching. I’m not going to install that crap on my computer. Go through the install process yourself and look how they try to install extra crap (weather channel?!) on your computer and they require your name and email address for activation. Forget it.

  10. hacker bob Says:

Umm..TP…Not to be pick, but where is the form?

  11. HealthcareHalle Says:

Real Player is working well for me.

  12. hacker bob Says:

OK, never mind, it is there now. Got my question in. Thanks

  13. Xbot Says:

If you don’t like Realplayer, get Real Alternative. That’s what I’m using.

  14. mrsmarks Says:

All I’m getting is an endless loop of video with talking about the health care problem. Has the forum started yet? Am I doing something wrong?

  15. Karen Gartman Says:

What’s wrong? All I am connecting to is a healthcare video.

    Have the candidates spoke yet??????

  16. TripMaster Monkey Says:

Starting in a few moments, Karen.

I’ve submitted my questions…hope to have them answered.

  17. TripMaster Monkey Says:

    Starting now!

  18. Susan Davis Says:

I have lost many years of my life due to a late-diagnosed mental illness. I was a middle class professional psychologist (doctorate) who is now deeply in debt, due to lack of parity in mental health benefits. I will not benefit from the new parity legislation proposed if I return to private practice. Long term plans????

  19. PeeJ Says:

Real Player isn’t a problem. You can give it bogus private info. It doesn’t care. My two cents.

  20. Randy Says:

    And we’re off…

  21. Constance Young Says:

I couldn’t download Real Player and after reading these posts I am glad. I would like to know if any of the candidates are supporting a single payer health plan. In my view all other plans are beholden to the insurance industries and are too complicated for ordinary mortals to understand.

  22. Mary Says:

Please ask Mrs. Clinton why she would have us wait for healthcare, if she becomes president, until her second term(assuming she’d get one).

  23. TripMaster Monkey Says:

Hey, it’s John Podesta! Where’s Jake to ambush him with off-topic questions?

  24. TripMaster Monkey Says:

    Comment by Mary — March 24, 2007 @ 12:21 pm

Ask her yourself, mary…that’s an excellent question, and one I’d like to hear the answer to.

  25. Mary Says:

sorry, I posted that in the wrong place. Hopefully, this time it went through

  26. candymarl Says:

All I get is a request to download the plugin. This is after I’ve downloaded real player. Where is the, oh I don’t know, play button?

  27. unbelievable Says:

TP, thanks for the opportunity. It’s great that you were able to arrange this Q&A session for us.

Unfortunately, I can’t afford the necessary technology to participate. But I will still ask my question.

That does make me worry that I and others like me will not have an equal voice… Are their possible alternatives that won’t exclude those who don’t have the latest technology? Maybe a transcript of the questions and answers after the fact?

    Thanks!

  28. Mozilla Says:

Puleeeeeeeeeeeeez, why just this crappy Real Player (an abnoxious, intusive program)???!!!

  29. Susan Daly Says:

I’m not getting this broadcast and it’s now 12:30 Eastern time; is anyone else getting it?

  30. Christopher Harless Says:

I also see “Thank you for submitting a question . . .” But I haven’t yet. Are we going to use the comments section for submitting questions?

  31. HealthcareHalle Says:

Questions can be posted in that field.

  32. Catherine Ratliff Says:

I was having trouble with RealPlayer, too, but clicked the link on this webpage, to an external source and now it is streaming beautifully.

  33. mozila Says:

WHy just Real player???!!!! {it’s crappy, bulky, very intrusive)

  34. FOS Says:

All candidates. I am uninsured tax payer who pays Medi W/H through Taxes.

Will Universal Health Care eliminate the Medi W/H currently being taken out via taxes or, will that be the system used to implement the program?

  35. george Says:

Why just Real Player???!!!! [it’s crappy, bulky, very intrusive. I refuse to install it in my computer]

    This is BS…..

  36. Susan S. Pastin Says:

Where the hell do I click to see the video? I just spent 15 minutes downloading RealPlayer!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  37. Jeanio Says:

The form on which I am supposed to be able to ask a question is not there. I would like to ask ANY of the candidates why we can’t just expand and improve the existing Medicare system to include everyone, on a single-payer system. This would be simple and uncomplicated. Medicare works — I’m on it.

  38. TripMaster Monkey Says:

    Susan (and others):

Click here to open the video in an external RealPlayer window.

That’s working much better for me than trying to view it here on the web page.

  39. TripMaster Monkey Says:

    John Edwards…here we go.

  40. unbelievable Says:

    Question I submitted:

Until Corporate Personhood is no longer truly running our nation, Health Care, like all other social programs that benefit the majority of Americans, will not be viable. Because Big Pharma and the Insurance Industry have campaigned against National Health Care, and because they have the finances to do so, the have and will continue to keep the United States as the only Industrialized Nation without a National Health Care system.

As President, what will you do to unleash yourselves from the problems created by Corporations controlling our political system - and as a result our very health?

Thank you very much for your willingness to be subjected to the questions of a frustrated population who feels like its government has used and abandoned them.

  41. ONE PISSED OFF UNABLE TO LISTEN PERSON Says:

I HAVE DOWNLOADED REALPLAYER TWICE. REBOOTED TWICE. TRIED BOTH IE AND FIREFOX AND STILL NOTHING. REALPLAYER SUCKS ASS!!! NEVER USE IT AGAIN!!!

  42. Amena Andersson Says:

(Side note: Think Progress’ web site needs a serious overhaul. This comment system is seriously antiquated. No registration, no threading, and a good 5-minute gap between posting a comment and seeing it appear, all conspire to derail discourse.)

  44. TripMaster Monkey Says:

    Tax increases. There it is.

At least he has the chutzpah to admit the realities of the situation…

  45. TripMaster Monkey Says:

Comment by ONE PISSED OFF UNABLE TO LISTEN PERSON — March 24, 2007 @ 12:36 pm

Please refer to my earlier comment, pissed….

  46. TripMaster Monkey Says:

Hmmm…Jon’s address is focusing quite a bit on women….unsurprising…

  47. ONE PISSED OFF UNABLE TO LISTEN PERSON Says:

Thanks alot ThinkNONProgress. Who had the bright idea to use stupid realplayer. Fire that person.

Realplayer is the worst possible choice of all. No wonder AirAmerica went Bankrupt.

I hope you are saving the forum so we can watch it later on a normal video player.

  48. FOS Says:

ONE PISSED OFF UNABLE TO LISTEN PERSON

CNN Pipeline has it Live right now. Chill……….

    ;p

  49. Wendy Stroud Says:

I couldn’t agree more about the RealPlayer choice - that’s about as smart as having Fox network host the democratic presidential debates. I want to watch this, so downloaded the player, gave them a fake address (I’m not stupid and know their reputation). I plan to remove it from my computer as soon as this broadcast is over and pray to the computer Goddess that they didn’t put any invisible crap on my computer.

  50. TripMaster Monkey Says:

pissed, did you refer to my earlier comment?

I don’t like RealPlayer any more than you…but I’m watching John Edwards right now…

  51. HealthcareHalle Says:

Despite the initial tax increase overall cost would be reduced. You would end up saving money.

  52. KEVIN SCHMIDT, STERLING VA Says:

Edwards blew it in 2004 when he and Kerry REFUSED to fight the second stolen presidential election. They both let down the nation. How could anyone ever trust him again? Kerry was right not to run again. Edwards should drop out of the race. He is worse than Lieberman.

  53. EvilPoet Says:

    Real Player? NO THANKS!

  54. TripMaster Monkey Says:

Kevin, I agree with your entire post, except for the last sentence.

    That’s crossing the line.

  55. TripMaster Monkey Says:

    “Hero’s Health Card”???

    Emotionally charged language, anyone?

  56. ONE PISSED OFF UNABLE TO LISTEN PERSON Says:

Thanks for the CNN pipeline suggestion. But there is no way I am going to give any MSM gnus service any of my money, even $2.95. Besides, realplayer finally decided to work on my computer.

Wow! That only took one hour! And the pixelated video picture is giving away the Matrix reality. I took the red chill pill.

  57. michael Says:

“TP, I hope you’re going to have other threads today, as well. There’s no way I can watch this forum with dial up.

    Comment by Zooey — March 24, 2007 @ 11:26 am”

What intelligent question would you ask zooey?

  58. Sofiadad Says:

Is Richardson a real candidate? He has had plenty of time to prepare for this and this is the best he has to offer. Temporary solutions, piecemeal options and esoteric verbiage? He has nothing to offer on healthcare. Really pathetic, Governor.

  59. Gerald Gibson Jr Says:

Even if you have RealPlayer, some may not be able to view the embedded video, particularly Internet Explorer users

You need to fire your tech person and get a professional. Over 90% of Internet users are on Internet Explorer. Why would you not START with a technology system that is rock solid on Internet Explorer?

Given that… this RP feed seems to be working just fine on Vista with IE.

  60. halleIllinois Says:

The emcee asked excellent questions, but I’d like to hear all of the candidates responses to a set (could be small in number) of the same questions. I believe this enables the best way to compare the candidates’ plans one to the other.

I also hope that the next effort to hold such a forum provides simple alternatives for listening as well as watching. As I read the comments, most were concerned about joining the forum instead of providing substantive questions. I too had difficulty joining the forum and had to drive to a nearby library to get connected.

    Thanks!

    Comment by TripMaster Monkey

Thanks for bringing this up - I thought I was only the one having problems. It’s frustrating to say the least! I also don’t like that some people can’t access the webcast. A forum for universal health care that not everyone can access - ironic, isn’t it?

  62. michael Says:

You won’t be missing anything unless you enjoy listening to politicians explain how they are going to raise your taxes.

  63. I WORFEUS Says:

Its working fine for me .

  64. Mary Says:

Only Edwards has a comprehensive plan that will pass because it’s transitional.

  65. bcdan Says:

Another vote for never using Real player again.

  66. TripMaster Monkey Says:

    michael sez:

You won’t be missing anything unless you enjoy listening to politicians explain how they are going to raise your taxes.

So why exactly are you here, michael?

Still serving up your own ’special’ contribution to the discussion, I see.

If you have genuinely concerns about tax hikes, there’s a form at the top of this page. Use it.

  67. ONE PISSED OFF UNABLE TO LISTEN PERSON Says:

Edwards was a successful trial lawyer. He could have helped with the stolen election lawsuits in 2004. Instead he went into hiding with Kerry and refused to fight the stolen election. That was inexcusable, their inaction makes both Kerry and Edwards complicit in the stolen election of 2004. Lieberman, as bad as he is today, did not run away in 2000.

  68. Hector Garcia Says:

Real alternative works wonders instead of real player. Also known al media player classic.

    I fully recommend it.

  69. TripMaster Monkey Says:

the video quality seems to have two settings…excellent and terrible, with the webcast switching randomly between the two.

Right now, Obama looks like he’s wearing a scramble suit from A Scanner Darkly

  70. me Says:

And Obama continues his trend of saying nothing in a whole lot of words. :P

When you’re done, we’d appreciate it if you could help to keep the discussion on this thread on-topic. Kthx.

  76. EvilPoet Says:

(11-22-01) So Bush Did Steal the White House: A recently uncovered memo shows that the Florida judge in charge of last year’s presidential recount was moving toward counting the “overvotes” that heavily favored Al Gore when George W. Bush got five Republicans on the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene to save the day. Continued here…

Hey michael - how’s that voter fraud thing going?

  77. rfinca Says:

“You won’t be missing anything unless you enjoy listening to politicians explain how they are going to raise your taxes.”

That’s right, because your tax dollars going to Iraq is so much better.

  78. KEVIN SCHMIDT, STERLING VA Says:

So far, no one is addressing the proactive issue of prevention. If Andorra can have the longest life expectancy in the world with primitive health care, then the U.S. with the most advanced health care in the world should have a much longer life expectancy than 48th place.

Perhaps we should get rid of the expensive AMA quacks, expensive pharmeceutical drug poisons and factory produced junk foods, and instead start to eat nutritious organic food and get proper exercise.

These prevention techniques would cost the U.S. nothing and actually save billions of dollars as Americans regain their health. Americans also would save a fortune in health care expenses, although many drugs companies and factory food manufacturers would go out of business.

  79. TripMaster Monkey Says:

    And here comes Hillary…

  80. Mary Robinson Says:

Having trouble? Try Firefox browser, free online.

  81. John Gilpins Says:

    Zooey,

I don’t have DSL either, and I’m not a high-tech person. I don’t even know what TP is talking about with all of this high-tech stuff.

Real Player? What’s that? Aren’t the REAL PLAYERS in the Bush administration.

FORGET HIGH-TECH FOR A COUPLE OF MINUTES.

Two media giants, the Washington Post and CBS News, have the funniest, funniest, funniest headlines today.

    Today’s Washington Post headline:

GONZALES HAS “I DIDN’T HAVE SEX WITH THAT WOMAN MOMENT.”

Trust me! I didn’t make this headline up: I DIDN’T HAVE SEX WITH THAT WOMAN MOMENT.

    Today’s CBS News headline:

    GONZALES LAUNCHES PR CAMPAIGN.

Oh no! I pity the citizens of PR–PUERTO RICO. I guess things are looking so bad for Alberto in the states, that he’s forced to run for some office in the territory of Puerto Rico. What Puerto Rican office is Gonzales running for? It must be dog catcher.

Come to think of it, maybe the entire Bush administration better move to PR–Puerto Rico.

Being a Don Juan in San Juan, PR sounds good. Girls, girls, girls, girls, girls, girls and more girls. How lovely!

    John

  82. marsha h Says:

Kevin– Kerry refused to challenge the vote count in Ohio, not Edwards. Edwards stayed up all night arguing against conceding the race. Kerry and his team made the decision, not Edwards. Read EE’s book “Saving Graces”, she writes about that night. Don’t write him off yet.

  83. Mary Robinson Says:

Gov. Richards not clear in explaining his plan. John Edwards very clear and sounds well-planned. Obama was shockingly ill-prepared. Here comes Clinton. I hope someone asks her what happened to the Clinton plan when there was a Dem majority and Dem in the WH, and lots of goodwill in the country. Why did it fail? Why not send it to the congress? Bill ran on it, but his plan wasn’t completed and ready to go for the congress.

  84. KEVIN SCHMIDT, STERLING VA Says:

Hillary says “everyone is susceptible to something.” She is susceptible to the voters disapproving of her continued support for the illegal Iraqi war. I guess that’s why she says she wants to make health care the number one issue, at least for today anyway.

  85. TripMaster Monkey Says:

Um….”number one issue”, Hillary? I don’t think so.

Universal health care is certainly important, but there’s a few things that require your more immediate attention (corrupt administration, impeachable offenses, gutting of the constitution, unjust imperialist war, etc., etc.).

Sorry, Hillary, but your grandstanding just cost you my vote. Again.

  86. John Gilpins Says:

PS. I punched the “send” button and nothing worked. I’m going to send this again. It may have gone through, but I don’t know. There may be two posts, but I don’t want to type this again.

My REAL PLAYER must not be working. Yeah, that’s it.
    Yeah, that’s it.

  87. Immigration2008DotCom Says:

    My question for any candidate:

Our immigration laws are currently barely enforced. The proposed solution, “comprehensive immigration reform” will make the illegal immigration problem even worse by broadcasting an extremely loud message to millions of prospective illegal aliens that all they need to do is come here illegally and wait a few years for their own amnesty. Isn’t the only way to support universal healthcare by coupling it with stringent enforcement of our current immigration laws? Won’t anything else - the current lax enforcement or the proposed “reform” - simply bankrupt the proposed healthcare plan?

  88. Jennifer Says:

Best presentation definitely has to go to Obama. His answers were the most genuine and thoughtful.

  89. george Says:

First, Real player sucks! Very bad & very intrussive program (it plants itself everywhere without permission–hard to get rid of it) and very bad company to do business with. Didn’t you learn from the Air America experience????!!!!!!!!!!!!

Second, regarding health care. I don’t understand why NO ONE will say: SCRAP the whole system of HMOs, big insurance companies, and huge bureacracies???!!!! Perhaps, we need to raise taxes, but we will SAVE lots of $$$$. Those of us who have coverage, it’s expensive. We pay for it either directly or through the employer–the latter could use the savings and offer better pay to employees.

Just showing the SS card (or something like that) everyone should be able to get health care as a right in a very wealthy, enlightened (?) country! ANd, focus on prevention. This would save additional $$$, as treating the effects are always more expensive in the latter stages of a disease.

Same with the environment! Maybe more $ up front, but you save money by not having to pay for the clean up… and you have a cleaner place for us to live in… and for our children.

Enough with those who claim to support a culture of life but only during the time two cells meet until childbirth. After that, survival of the fittest!

  90. Simone de Beauvoir Says:

Since we have a human population quickly approaching 7 billion, far beyond the natural parameters of the planet, it is more likely that over medicating people will only ensure that diseases become more rampant, more virulent and more common (a fact which can be observed by those with their eyes open to the actual universe).

Instead of instant medication, a mere band-aid on the problem, we need to consider how to treat the real roots of our illnesses - excessive population. And, how nature deals with such problems.

    Consider the following:

“The total amount of suffering per year in the natural world is beyond all decent contemplation. During the minute that it takes me to compose this sentence, thousands of animals are being eaten alive, many others are running for their lives, whimpering with fear, others are slowly being devoured from within by rasping parasites, thousands of all kinds are dying of starvation, thirst, and disease. It must be so. If there ever is a time of plenty, this very fact will automatically lead to an increase in the population until the natural state of starvation and misery is restored. In a universe of electrons and selfish genes, blind physical forces and genetic replication, some people are going to get hurt, other people are going to get lucky, and you won’t find any rhyme or reason in it, nor any justice. The universe that we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but pitiless indifference.”

    – Richard Dawkins, “God’s Utility Function” Scientific American (November, 1995)

  91. TripMaster Monkey Says:

Thanks marsha…I posted a similar comment, but it was eaten by the capricious TP spam filter.

Just one more reason this site needs a serious overhaul.

  92. Healthcare Says:

Hillary is really worried about fielding questions. She has repeated the same points in the same response.

  93. Mary Robinson Says:

Clinton good job explaining the problem - but what about the solution? I think this campaign will come down to who is the one to get the job done. I think people are sick of the rhetoric, lies, or ineffective governing.

I want to hear Clinton say, this is what I would do, when, how and how to pay for it.

  94. Mary Says:

Hillary makes my teeth itch. Did she say anything?

  95. Healthcare Says:

Totally agree Mary. Hillary is similar to Bush in that she wants to fulfill an agenda without paying for it. What does this mean? It means further deficit spending which will bury future generations. Preventative care will save money in the long run but Hillary must realize it will cost money initially.

  96. EvilPoet Says:

    Gonzales Launches PR Campaign

Who’s paying for it? We the People? ENOUGH is ENOUGH!

Comment by KEVIN SCHMIDT, STERLING VA — March 24, 2007 @ 1:36 pm

I started that 15 years ago. Took a few years to evolve from the culture into which I was born… But, at 40, I look like I’m in my late twenties, and I still have just as much energy. My dental hygenists are amazed at the quality of my teeth. I have great blood pressure, low cholesterol, no joint pain, and no wrinkles. I look at my friends who are my age, and definitely don’t feel half as worn and tired as they do.

I wholly agree with you - that a more realistic solution for our health care problems would be for the Government to teach people how to take better care of themselves from the start. And, as I keep saying, we won’t see that happen as long as Big Businesses own our politicians, and as a result ,our government…

  98. I WORFEUS Says:

I have a question for Mrs Clinton.

She spoke about funding a plan to create a centralized repository for these medical records.

In the mid 90’s I worked on the VA’s VBA “Highway One” project, which was a centralized effort in the VA to electronically scan and store all Veterans medical records into a centralized, indexed and searchable electronic database.

Why can’t we leverage this and other efforts already underway within the government and private sector. Wouldn’t it be more cost effective to use technology and procedures already in use, instead of re-inventing the wheel?

marsha h — March 24, 2007 @ 1:44 pm True. But Kerry had nothing to do with Edward’s terrible decision to do nothing about the stolen election AFTER Election Day. That was a decision Edwards made on his own.

Because he refused to fight the stolen election in Ohio and other states court cases, he does not deserve to run again, let alone ever become the president. Write him off as unelectable.

He should drop out of the race because I can guarantee you that at least one Democratic candidate will bring up this issue with Edwards sometime this year.

Great discussion. I am afraid nobody is talking at all about cost. There are potential savings in efficiency but nobody has mentioned some critical factors, The absurd expectations of people espectially at the end of life and the extra cost incurred by physicians ordering tests and treatments because of fear of malpractice. There is also the pressure of technology that is driving increased costs. We have to ratchet down expectations or there isn’t going to be enough money in the world for us to give everything to everybody.

There are atatistics that show that we are the sickest Industrialized Nation in teh world - by a LOT. There has to be a link to what we eat and how sick we are. I’msure there are stress factors also - but as we’ve been saying - those of us who eat better tend to handle the stress better as well.

    Comment by TripMaster Monkey — March 24, 2007 @ 2:43 pm

Interesting connection… My cats ate some of the recalled food, and out of concern, I have been reading studies on renal failure in cats. It’s appalling the number of issues domesticated cats have as a result of being domesticated. The article you provided furthered this epiphany that domesticating animals has been to their detriment, because we do not feed them properly.

Then consider that really, we aren’t any different than these domesticated cats. Explains a lot…

“The cats eating only raw food were disease free and healthy, generation after generation after generation.

The cats eating the cooked and processed foods had all kinds of problems.

By the end of the first generation the cats started to develop degenerative diseases and became quite lazy.

By the end of the second generation the cats had developed degenerative diseases by mid-life and started losing their coordination.

By the end of the third generation the cats had developed degenerative diseases very early in life and some were born blind and weak and had a much shorter life span. Many of the third generation cats couldn’t even produce offspring. There was an abundance of parasites and vermin while skin diseases and allergies increased from an incidence of five percent in normal cats to over 90 percent in the third generation of deficient cats. Kittens of the third generation did not survive six months. Bones became soft and pliable and the cats suffered from adverse personality changes. Males became docile while females became more aggressive.

The cats suffered from most of the degenerative diseases encountered in human medicine and died out totally by the fourth generation. “

I agree. Obesity has also been labeled an “epidemic” -if I recall correctly, studies have linked obesity to diabetes.

Also, I believe environmental factors are at play. Recently, my wife and I attended her 20th (I think it was 20th) high school reunion. Her high school is in a small town, in an agricultural area. I was surprised to find out how many of her former classmates have been diagnosed with, treated for, tumor and cancer of all kinds: brain, throat, lungs, etc. Really nasty stuff.

I strongly suspect exposure to chemicals and pesticides must have had something to do with the prevalence of such problems. Not that preventive medicine would make any difference to them, unfortunately.

  168. Gerald Gibson Jr Says:

Hillary said the new software system for streamlining the information exchange (thereby reducing costs by alot) would cost around $200 million… that is untrue. There are alot of programmers that write code for free whether it be open source or just to post on websites for the benefit of all. These programmers would love to write software for such a nobel cause.. I am a big Microsoft follower myself but it is very true that very nice software has been made by open source people… and if it is for America? And if it is branded as “patriotic” then we would not need the $200 million… that money could be spent on the hardware and maintenance.

And even if the open source route (which should be done for voting also) is not taken $200 million is way over what a decentralized XML information exchange would cost. I built a similar system for Indiana’s Gaming Commision which keeps track of all employees that get hired at the casinos (FBI background checks, badging, and cross casino employee tracking) for about $40,000.

I know this to be true because it is my business to know… it is my career and I have been doing it professionally for 13 years and unprofessionally much longer.

Actually that money is all being borrowed from countries like Saudi Arabia and China… we need to stop the war just to stop going further into dept… if we work smarter (computer systems) and not harder (paper systems and too many middle man insurance companies) then we can save enough to make a huge difference… and when people can just go to a normal doctor instead of waiting till they must go to the emergency room then ALOT more money will be saved.

Hundreds of millions of people use it every day with no issues, and it is the defacto standard for real time streaming media. 9 times out of 10, problems with such a mainstream easy to use program are end user related.

Thanks, RealNetworks for setting up the free feed for the forum. I just wish your system worked better. At least one answer by EVERY candidate was garbled by lost data, and I have cable internet. I was just as satisfied with your streaming video as usual…

As for the discussion today, there were no big revelations. Each candidate staked out basically the same position with minor tweaks with three exceptions: Barak Obama, Dennis Kucinich and Gravel. Barak’s answer was “still working on it, give me a few more weeks” (roughly paraphrased). Kucinich came in with is Medicare for All plan — which, IMHO beats the rest hands down, but has the practical problem of needing both Dennis to win the primary / general elections AND getting 60 votes in the Senate. Gravel has an interesting notion, but he seemed somewhat contradictory on wanting to get rid of private health insurance profits and yet having some competition between plans under his “voucher” system.

I plan to support Kucinich in the primary — unless, when unvailed a few weeks from now, Obama’s plan is very much like Medicare for all and not so much like the other bandaids being proposed. I was really hoping he would use the platform today to unvail it, but alas no… still waiting!

No one eats McDonalds like that, but I don’t believe that’s the point. Putting all those calories and saturated fats in your body, even if it’s a couple of times a week without exercise cannot be good for your body.

Neither is breathing oxygen… it causes free radicals in your blood stream which can break down your cells causing aging and sometimes even cancer.

Everyone has the right to smoke, drink alcohol, take drugs of various kinds, and eat shit every once in a while.

Too much of anything is stupid.

The last time that I touched base with MS, they admitted that the problem was theirs and no fix was available. The last time my system dropped IE, there was no admission where the problem laid. That generally means that they have found the problem and it is not theirs. MS as a matter of policy does not share their findings with outside providers. When I worked at IBM, we set up a conference call with the outside vendor and laid the problem out. That information was never shared with the customer. On some occassions where only software was the culprit, we would let the outside vendor ride our update process. That was not entirely for autistic reasons - we wanted to be sure that no new conflicts were introduced by our own changes.

90% of the people on the Internet use Internet Explorer which means that they also most likely have WMV player… and of coarse Flash Video Player is even more ubiquitous… Real Player was a dumb choice. Even QuickTime would have been better.

Why would this be targeted to the 10% instead of the 90%?

    Comment by Gerald Gibson Jr — March 24, 2007 @ 4:23 pm

The reason 90 percent of the people on the internet use Internet Explorer, is because it comes preinstalled on any IBM compatible PC running windows. Windows Media Player does likewise. But what you didn’t mention is most new PC’s come preconfigured with Real Player already installed. If you don’t have it, its a free, easy download.

Quicktime is ok, but it doesn’t always provide full screen viewing, and likewise, may need to be installed.

What I am saying is Gerald, that Real Player, is a simple, standard program that is not hard to get, and most people already have it installed.

I personally have never, ever had a problem using real player, and millions of people use it all the time with no isses.

Calling it a “dumb” choice is just not an accurate statement.

I won’t call the people dumb who don’t know how to use it correctly, but come on. Do you really think TP is dumb for showing a real time streaming video in the most popular and mainstream decoder there is?

I come in here, and the FIRST posts I see are people Bitching cause they can’t figure out how to use a simple media player.

I just get tired of the bitching.
