Salon.com’s Mark Benjamin has a new report documenting how U.S. soldiers with debilitating injuries and other medical conditions, including female soldiers who were pregnant, were deployed for weeks to the desert training facility at Fort Irwin, California. “In some cases, soldiers were sent there even though their injuries were so severe that doctors had previously recommended they should be considered for medical retirement from the Army.” Military experts say the decision “was an effort to pump up manpower statistics used to show the readiness of Army units.”
No they didn’t! After all, hacker bob never saw anyone who was injured get redeployed, so it obviously didn’t happen.
So there.

March 26th, 2007 at 1:37 pmI thought women in combat was just FINE with the liberals?!
March 26th, 2007 at 1:37 pmApart from that sarcastic “I told you so” — plenty of soldiers throughout history have bravely volunteered to enter battle even though they were wounded. Keep in mind this is jusy Fort Irwin, California, not downtown Baghdad. Let’s ask how many of these “ordered” deployed WANTED to go despite their injuries.
March 26th, 2007 at 1:40 pmanyone actually suprised by this?
March 26th, 2007 at 1:40 pmJake…Women in combat IS just fine. Its all about equality. However you fail to mention that people with debilitating injuries were sent into traiing. In your case that would be the removal of your frontal lobe. For others its more serious.
March 26th, 2007 at 1:42 pm#2 so you’re all for sending pregnant women into combat but the idea of an abortion just appalls you…
how has your head not exploded yet?

There’s that reading comprehension problem again, Jakey.
Somehow, you managed to pick out the word ‘female’ while completely missing ‘injured’ and ‘pregnant’.

Do you ever actually READ the articles and links before making your stupid A$$ comments?
Sheesh!!!
March 26th, 2007 at 1:43 pmJake sez:
Jake, as I explained to you very carefully last time, there’s a significant difference between ordering a wounded man to fight and not ordering a wounded man not to fight. The difference lies in the soldier’s personal initiative. To rephrase it a bit more simply (in deference to you, Jake), there is a big difference between a wound man volunteering to fight, and a wounded man being ordered to fight. The first is heroism, the second is depraved indifference.
If you’re still fuzzy on the details of our previous exchange (back in the halcyon days when you weren’t afraid to answer my posts), here’s a link for you.
March 26th, 2007 at 1:46 pm#3 yes… blame the troops. you sure are one empathic b@stard Jake.
Now lets just say that your crazy talk is correct for a second. And a wounded troop wanted so badly to redeploy he volunteered… WHY the hell woudl the army ALLOW such a thing!? a soldier who is not in top physical condition for their particular job would put other troops in danger!
have you ever even HEARD of the term “logic”?

March 26th, 2007 at 1:46 pmFor the injured: Does he have a pulse…? Then he’s okay.
For the pregnant: All units are now being trained in battlefield birthing techniques.
Putting ANYONE into combat isn’t very cool with liberals (especially when it only serves the interest of the ruling party and it’s friends). Why is it so cool for the facists? Because they’re loosers.

March 26th, 2007 at 1:56 pmJake,
Thanks for the offer to ask you questions. Here’s one:
What the f**k is wrong with you?
Here’s an observation: You counter every topic at TP. This makes you disingenuous at best (espacially when you resort to fallacious debate techniques – and moreso with each occourance of same). The really bad part of your “oppose them at every opportunity” technique is that it weakens the debate for all od us. In addition, it makes you look like a world-class A-hole.
March 26th, 2007 at 1:56 pmLet’s ask how many of these “ordered†deployed WANTED to go despite their injuries.
Comment by Jake
Somehow I don’t think you could get on a transport plane to Iraq if you don’t have orders.
The army needs severely injured soldiers, convicts, unfit recruits, the mentally disabled and others to make their head counts. Its like the Dirty Dozen x 2500.
March 26th, 2007 at 1:57 pmAt this rate, Jake is going to be talking to himself….

March 26th, 2007 at 2:03 pmCongrats. Great accomplishment. I asked Jake a while back if I was on “THE LIST” but I never received a response back so I have my fingers crossed.
I suggest that we institute a draft and give hawks and the descendants of hawks very low numbers so that they can more tangibly express their beliefs in wars of aggression. In a generation or two the problem should self rectify.
March 26th, 2007 at 2:06 pmSorry, dlet, if I missed your prior question, but you are not currently on the “Ignore List” so I’ve only seen you being polite in answering my questions. I apologize in advance if you wanted to be on the “Ignore List” – just let me know.

March 26th, 2007 at 2:10 pmYou gotta get back up and fight. That’s the conservative way. Libs wanna wait for the government to help, whether you lose your job and want welfare or get injured in war.
But in the real world, not the libby world, you get back up like a true warrior. At least, conservatives do.

March 26th, 2007 at 2:12 pmToo bad TP as a whole is not on Joke’s ignore list. I hope I made the list but in case I haven’t…. go away Jake, you worthless piece of dung.
March 26th, 2007 at 2:12 pmThis is a non-issue in that it has been going on for a LONG time and prior to our current “situation”.
How do I know? Well, I was deployed to war games at Fort Irwin in 1982 even though I had a broken-leg injury that was only a week old. (as a side note, if you ever want to have a lot of fun, try walking in sand with crutches).
The reason that I was deployed even with injury was so that the numbers could reflect that I was a deployable soldier. However, I was only made to endure the 120 degree heat with a full leg cast for 1 day before I was labeled a “casualty” and sent back to the base.
If your curious what happens to such an injury in a sweltering heat environment (I’m not exaggerating about 120 degrees), your leg swells up to the point where it shatters the plaster cast.

TMM,
I stand by what I have said in the past. I have not seen it. Just because I have not seen it does not mean it has not happened. I conceded that point long ago. I can only speak from my experience.
Also consider this, the ARMY is accused of deploying seriously wounded, not the MARINE CORPS. I am in the Marine Corps, not the Army (there is a difference). I have not yet seen a report of the Marine Corps doing it.

That’s because while they have been working, they have been ripping off their employer for all they can so when they are fired they have enough stuff to sell to survive on until they can get a new job.
The Dem’s believe in being fair and honest, for the most part, and believe in earning what you obtain. So when they are let go from a job, they don’t have all that stolen loot to fall back on to help them make it until the next job opportunity comes up.
That’s the difference!!!! We believe in being FAIR you believe in only worrying about YOURSELF!

You are allowed to post photographs of you obvious head injury.
Unless as most of us think it was caused by a frontal lobotomy, then medical records will be sufficient.

March 26th, 2007 at 3:09 pmIn case anyone needed an object lesson in why trolls suck, this thread is perfect. The vast majority (no, I’m not going to count them) of posts are (a) from Jake, (b) responding to Jake or (c) commenting on Jake (and, yes, I recognize that this post falls fairly easily into c). TP may as well re-title the post “All About Jake”. I’m sure he’s tickled to death to have all this attention, but the actual point of the original post has been completely lost. Trolls love negative attention. Otherwise, why be a troll?
So, ask yourself: do you really want to give Jake all this attention, or do you want to discuss the state of the State?

SENATE STAFFER BUSTED FOR CARRYING WEBB’S LOADED GUN… Phillip Thompson, executive assistant to Senator James Webb (D-VA ), has been arrested by Capitol Hill Police on Monday for ‘inadvertently’ holding the senator’s loaded gun, according to a person close to the investigation. A Senate staffer reports that Thompson was arrested for carrying the gun in a bag through security into a Senate office building while the Senator was parking his car. March 26th, 2007 at 3:44 pmre hacker bob,
you’re playing semantic games here. I worked in the oilfields in wyo for five years, while I’m a veteran of the oil patch, I am in no way a vet in the commonly understood meaning of the word as it’s being used here. was in the boy scouts, does that qualify me as a vet? i hope not. like women, does that make me a lesbian? I doubt it, yet, by using part of the defintion, i am. (yes i know that’s some flawed logic, but you get my point.)
thanks for your continued service, stay healthy, and I hope your fellow marines come home from iraq soon.
March 26th, 2007 at 3:47 pmLying Abouth The Dead
An extraordinary story appeared once this morning on BBC News 24, and then was buried.
The BBC World Service has obtained a leaked document. It is an official appraisal by British government scientists across government departments, commissioned by 10 Downing Street, of the study published by the Lancet that estimated 655,000 dead in Iraq. The appraisal says that the methodology is correct and that the study “follows best practice”.
Astonishingly, the official DFID verdict was that 655,000 dead is “If anything, an underestimate”.

You are in the branch of the Service as a Marine, but you are an Active Duty Soldier.
Just as a Navy or Air Force Active Military is considered a Soldier. The word “Soldier” is uncompassing all Military personnel, as I understand it.
Thanks for your military service as well….
March 26th, 2007 at 3:52 pm#85,
I had to use the alternate spelling (using “ee”) because TP censors/deletes any post with the previous spelling. Which might explain why you had to change your screen name.
Also, I most surely am on your “List of Ignorance” because I have called you out as the liar that you are. Please abide by your own “rules” and ignore my posts. I have no inclination or desire to discuss any issues with a known liar. I do not wish for my participation to aid in the least the advancement of your dubious motives.
I post this only to help expose the farce so that the topics will be less polluted with misinformation and deception.
Good riddance.

March 26th, 2007 at 11:01 pmBy ‘elite’ I did not mean fighting capability, but big bucks. If Powell had attended West Texas A&M at El Paso, I doubt that he would have achieved General Rank from its ROTC program. You spent a lot of time on your rebutal and I am truely sorry for that, but I was only trying to point out that verbal carnage is not the way to distinguish our fighting men and women. Each of them places their life on the line. The elite in our military are choosen at the time they graduate from High School.
