“The administration doesn’t like me to say civil war,

but I’m afraid that’s the way it is,” former Secretary of State Colin Powell said in a speech Friday in Florida. “Iraq will be resolved one way or another,” Powell said, expressing doubts “over the good that additional troops would do now. ‘We’re running our troops into the ground,’ he said.”

Finally the General in Colon Powell comes out to speak.
Way to late to save your place in history, traitor.

  2. TripMaster Monkey says:

Again….don’t want to spam all the threads with this, but given Colon’s comment about out troops’ fatigue, it’s quite relevant:

  3. Feverpitch says:

Too bad Powell spent so many years saying what so many corrupt administrations wanted him to say.

We didn’t need Powell to tell us it’s a civil war. We needed him to tell the truth when he was advancing his career.

  4. Zimzone says:

This is the ADD administration, or ADDministration.

They can’t focus on what’s good for America; just corporate cronies.

They couldn’t keep an ‘eye on the ball’ in Afghanistan, dropped the ball & invaded Iraq.

They emit press briefings that are incomplete, but when somebody calls them on it, they shoot the messenger.

They support an incompetent AG because he’s a Bushlicker.

They launch a ‘War On Freedom’, but call it the War on Terror.

The New World Order they envision has no middle class, just haves & have nots.

They find fault in words, (civil war), not the actions taken.

They’ve politicized the Justice Dept to a point where the mission is only to perpetuate the Neonuts.

    17 months ’till the ‘08 Election…

I seem to remember this same man seated before the United Nations General Assembly in February 2003 talking most forcefully about Saddam’s Weapons of Mass Deception program in Iraqnam. He was so good at it that he convinced me that there was a threat. His mea culpea in Florida is 4 years and more than 3,200 dead American kids too late.

I wonder if this signals Powell’s first attempt at trying to redeem himself for a political run, just like Newtie is attempting. He’s probably relying on the average American’s attention span being 8 nanoseconds so he thinks nobody will remember his culpability. Some will.

Is ALL of this misery REALLY worth the presidential legacy…

… of a deserter who failed to answer his country’s call to service when it was HIS turn…

…and for his co-conspirator who ALSO deferred HIS service, opting to spend HIS time…

…perfecting his political machinations to “starve the beast”…

…L’il Dick came up with an “ingenious” plan to “privatize” essential services…

    …to our nation’s military…

…creating a goose (Halliburton) that lays golden eggs (for the corporate aristocracy)…

…and NOW we’re STUCK (due to DUHmerican’s devotion to passe ideas about bravery, honor and patriotism)…

…foisted upon them by “leaders” who have NO connection to any of those values…

…the 30% deadenders are YOUR family, neighbors, friends and co-workers…

…and they are DRIVING America off of a cliff…

…in an attempt to SAVE George W. Bush’s presidential legacy…

…and their face for voting for him…

…poor Colin Powell found out the truth about Bushiva and L’il Dick…

    …much too late…

#3 He failed America when we needed him the most.

  8. BlueArkansas says:

Call it whatever the hell you want to, just end it and get our troops home tomorrow!

  9. klyde says:

Q: What’s the last thing colin powell’s wife says to him in the morning before he leaves for the State Department?

A: “Don’t forget to take your spine out honey.”

  10. Gregg Jasper says:

Powell will be swiftboated by rethugs later on today.

  11. Marie says:

I read an article yesterday in Truthdig, by Scott Ritter. HT: stonehinge where in Ritter explains the conditions in Iraq and how it became what it is today.
That should convince anyone that this is a civil war and we have no business being there – in fact, we have exacerbated it.

  12. Marie says:

    Pretty scary stuff.
Do you really think they will go ahead with this despite all the trouble they are in at home — or will they go ahead with it because of the trouble they are in at home.

  13. GaPeach103 says:

Who cares what Colin “Bought and Paid for” Powell has to say? Who listens to Colin “Duped Dipsh*t” Powell any more? He had credibility, he had honor, he had integrity; but he chose to align himself with Rethugs, and now he is ethically bankrupt. His choice, his consequences. There is no redemption until and unless he completely repudiates the Bush Administration and openly begs forgiveness for his willful aiding and abetting those corrupt crooks!

  14. VerbalKint says:

Too little too late to save yourself from being forever condemned by history, Mr. Powell. You had the chance to be a great American hero. You blew it. Big time. Now get lost, unless you are willing to provide evidence and testimony of crimes by the administration.

  15. Marie says:

This is all far too late to restore his shredded reputation. He allowed it to happen because of his “loyalty” to Bush&Co — and it has forever ruined him.
Nothing he says now will change that – attempts at reincarnation look feeble and self-serving.
When the nation needed him most, he wasn’t there — can’t change history.

  16. SouthWest Bob says:

Powell’s problem is that he’s a “play it safe at all costs” guy. He is attempting to rebuild his reputation by finally jumping into an issue long after it was really news. Powell will never be leading the charge on any issue regarding this president or his mis-administration unless there are many other repubs already on the band-wagon ahead of him. Now, if he comes out tomorrow and says he has formed a group of former administration officials to push for the impeachment of this administration and all are willing to testify under oath, then opinions of him might begin to change. Unfortunately, his place in history is in concrete and no amount of obvious “insightful” observations will change the world’s opinion of him.

  17. Roger says:

If you really wish to make amends perhaps you could shed some light on how intelligence was used by the administration in the lead up to the war? Or were you too involved in that manipulation to do anything about it now except make limp, meaningless speeches intended to save your legacy?

  18. Real RedNeck says:

He’s a liar, don’t forget he lied to the UN!

  19. Juan C says:

Can I ask what is swifboat?

  20. Mary Poplins says:

Who cares what Powell saids. He is not creditable. Where was he when we needed him?

  21. hellinabucket says:

He has let us down. I had briefly worked for him in the Pentagon (late 80’s) and always admired him. His speech in front of the UN is a blot on his record. He lost credibilty once the truth started to come out.

I do wish he would take a stronger stance in speaking out now. Let the swiftboaters attack. He couls shed light to so much more.

Probably won’t do much more than what he’s doing now though. He has become the “Play it safe” guy.

  22. WaltTheMan says:

  23. John Gilpins says:

I agree with the posters. With Powell’s change of heart, he’s just a little, little, little, little late speaking out.

Marie, I don’t think Powell’s bank account is RUINED. Many things may be ruined, but certainly not his bank account. If my memory serves me, a few years ago I remember reading that Powell’s net worth is in the millions, and millions, and millions, and millions, and millions of dollars.

    John

  24. hellinabucket says:

His reputation has been damaged beyond repair but his bank account is most likely doing fine. His estimated wealth when up for the Sec. of State job was at 27 million.

  25. Bluedahlia says:

It is funny how things turn out. I remember when my mother said Colin Powell would be the first black President and that she would vote for him should he choose to run. This was quite a while ago, I might add. Can’t remember exactly.
If he kept some integrity instead of his loyalty, who knows, she might have gotten to vote one way or another for him. *shrug* The path forked and he took the wrong path, and that path took him somewhere I doubt he wants to be now.

  26. John Gilpins says:

    Thanks for the $27,000,000 figure.

    I was thinking $25,000,000, but I wasn’t exactly sure. I didn’t want put down a wrong figure.

Powell has made a lot of money serving on Fortune 500 boards. That’s surely going to dwindle down a bit. And whatever he was making giving speeches must be less now. Heck, maybe organizations are paying him now not to give speeches.

The speech circuit is a gravy train. If you were a big shot, you can make a $100,000 a speech.

What’s really crazy is that family members of big, and not so big shots, can make a lot of money giving speeches. I think Steven Ford, the son of President Gerald Ford, is a motivational speaker. He’s not in the big leagues commanding $100,000 a speech but he’s making loot.

    John

  27. tarazan says:

Colin powell is making millions of dollars of his speeches and talks like all of them do,while soldiers are killed and wounded daily.

He is no different than all of these retired politicians cashing on their public service big time….
When it was time for him to say something…he didn’t as a public servant, that might have saved lives.

After all ,he was in charge of our foreign policy…Instead
he went to encourage this war..based on flimsy evidence at the UN, which later he claimed he didn’y know that facts were twisted.!!

  28. shane says:

He’s just acting like a politician. Worrying more about his reputation than the country he helped deceive.

Now that he realizes he’s become insignificant he’s probably just talking to get his name back in the press.

He’s not helping, he’s not hurting, he’s just talking. Well he can just save it.

  29. Dreary Urbanite says:

I am guessing that the current regime doesn’t like the term “civil war” for any reason and prefers to call our own “the war of northern aggression” or something equally ridiculous.

  30. Raymond Funamoto says:

Colin, WHY THE HELL DIDN’T YA SAY THIS WHEN YA WERE SECRETARY OF STATE? SHOWS EVERYBODY WHAT A “GUTSY” IN TRUTH, GUTLESS WONDER YA ARE!!!!! WHY DON’T YA TAKE YA BUTT-BOY “Brick Shithouse” Armitage FOR A WALK—-RIGHT IN THE RIVER FOR BOTH OF YA SCUM!!!!!

  31. TerrytheTurtle says:

F*** off Colin – you’ve been an Uncle Tom since you helped cover up My Lai.
