Report shows broad efforts to block climate research.

A new report documents “hundreds of instances” in which Bush administration officials throughout the government “engaged in White House-directed efforts to stifle, delay or dampen the release of climate change research that casts the White House or its policies in a bad light, says a new report that purports to be the most comprehensive assessment to date of the subject.” The Government Accountability Project will release the report at a House Science and Technology Committee hearing tomorrow.

UPDATE: More from GAP’s blog.

But if the Wingnuts are correct, there is no global warming, therefore, why would the WH need to obfuscate findings from climate research?

    I wonder… NOT.

  2. Jake says:

Bush doesn’t want any more FEDERALLY FUNDED embryonic stem-cell research either, so?

  3. VerbalKint says:

Whoa, Jake, that was one sorry attempt to change the subject. Better try again.

  4. Jake says:

    Not Canadian:

The White House has never denied there is a climate change going on — I think the sticking points are how much are humans contributing and, if we are, can we do anything reasonable in response.

  5. muckdog says:

Lets all grab our swmsuits and head to Al Gore’s heated pool for an emergency global warming summit!

Who’s bringing steaks for the bbque?

  6. TripMaster Monkey says:

Hey Shakey…try to stay on topic.

After all, that’s what you’re warbling over and over again in the lamar-clinton thread…wouldn’t want you to hold yourself to a different standard than you purport to hold everyone else to , now would you?

  7. bob (not the hacker) says:

talking about man made global warming emboldens the terrorists.

  8. Tuber says:

Is there anyone here who can explain to me specifically how Ethanol is produced and how it performs in relation to petrol? I’m very curious why the Detroit boys are so hot to force this one.

  9. Crump's Brother says:

You know what is great here Jake? Your party has done such a poor job governing, that they are fulfilling the ideologies greatest flaw. That government itself is to blame for the its inability to do anything right. It’s not the fault of the dumbasses in the Republican Party. It’s just the fact that government doesn’t work.

Bush didn’t ignore New Orleans through his crony appointments to FEMA and DHS, it’s just that government can’t right?

Government works if people care for it. If you infiltrate with the hope of destroying it, you will do that as well. This is your party’s mess Jake. THe conservative movement in this country has made a bed that is only comfortable for those with access to the machinations of power. The least among us are left to beg for the scraps that will not come. I hope forgiveness comes your way.

  10. Jake says:

For instance, I know that both President Bush and Prime Minister Howard agreed that climate change posed a serious long-term challenge. You can see what Bush was doing about this even back in 2001:

    http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2001/07/20010713-4.html

  11. bob (not the hacker) says:

“the sticking point” is only in bush’s head. name a respectable, peer reveiwed, study that questions man’s part in global warming. or try to change the subject jake, or pornojake, it’s hard to tell these days.

  12. DM says:

#4 The White House has never denied there is a climate change going on ~ Jake

Holy balls Jake… when you peddle the big lie you really think big, don’t you?

  13. Jake says:

I hope those NOT on the “Ignore List” can see that my point was not to discuss stem-cells — there is no broad Administration effort to block climate research — as I just pointed out, Bush was concerned about the issue from the very beginning.

  14. Jake says:

    Did you follow the link?

  15. bob (not the hacker) says:

gee jake, for someone who claims to not have any connection to the current adminstration, you sure were able to put your finger on that old, obscure press release fast. are you sure you’re not a 25 year old rnc intern?

  17. TripMaster Monkey says:

    Jake sez:

The White House has never denied there is a climate change going on

    Debunked.

You really are too easy, Shakey.

And before you start yammering about how there’s never been an official denial, keep in mind that a flat-out refusal to accept scientific fact, coupled with an intensive campaign to distort the facts and silence scientists, speaks far more eloquently than an ‘official denial’ ever could.

Go ahead…ask if anyone (not on your “ignore list”) wants to ask you a question. Let’s see how many takers you get, and how long they stay off The List â„¢ after their questions get too uncomfortable for you.

  18. Jake says:

For the record, I found these links via Google. I am not 25 years old or an intern for the RNC. If anyone (NOT on the “Ignore List”) has questions about that or how to find things on Google, let me know.

Bob, I have noticed this exact same thing before, Jake coming up with an obscure government document of some sort or another on the spot, something only a policy wonk seems likely to know about. It is one of the reasons that I suspect he is a party operative (volunteer or paid, it doesn’t matter).

  23. bob (not the hacker) says:

    re #17
so you’re really 24 and working at the heritage foundation, or something similar. what were your seach terms for google to find that particular doc so fast? And you’re already talking to me so don’t suddenly start invoking your rules here, you’ve already stopped ignoring me.

  24. JakeSux says:

    Comment by Gerald Gibson Jr — March 27, 2007 @ 1:29 pm

This isn’t far from the truth in some cases. There are widespread reports that interviewees for science-related appointments at federal agencies (e.g. NSF, NIH, and the like) have been asked their party affiliation, whether they voted for Bush, and whether they are loyal to Bush.

Jake, do you want to tackle the proposition that science appointees should be vetted for loyalty to Bush?

  26. JakeSux says:

    Verbal:

no Jake is an Evangelical, and that’s all you need to know. He is worse than the terrorists we are supposed to be fighting. How could a president who talks to god be wrong?

  27. Not Canadian says:

You can see what Bush was doing about this even back in 2001:

In the words of Chuck D. from Public Enemy, “talking loud ain’t sayin’ nothin’ “.

Put the money where your mouth is Shrub, or shut up.

  28. bob (not the hacker) says:

    re #21

VerbalKint, naw, I’m sure jake “googled” bush global warming and then speed read all 134,239,546,567 hits and found that particular one. In the three minutes it took for him to post. It’s as likely as bush being as mislead as the rest of us about the WMD in iraq.

  29. TripMaster Monkey says:

    JakeSux sez:

no Jake is an Evangelical, and that’s all you need to know.

Yes, but evangelical what? Baptist? Catholic?

It’s all so confusing…perhaps Jake’s a Bap-Catholic-tist that hails from the same alternate dimension as Jason M. Hendler. Perhaps they were roommates at the Ivy-League Stanford there.

Actually, that would explain a lot.

  30. Dale says:

#17, Jake, you should know by now. If you take the opposite view in any thread, you’re automatically

    1) an RNC operative

    -or-

    2) being paid by the the WH

They do it even to long-time progressive-oriented TP posters.

  31. DM says:

#13 Why would I follow one cheezy link to the craptacular paropaganda warehouse when the evidence speaks for itself?

    Bush’s motto:

    “Mother nature made the world,
    Beasts and air, water and soil;
The ship of state with sails unfurled,
Will steer its policy by oil.”

I’ve watched this administration — from the opening days of repealing Clinton’s last environmental acts and balking on Kyoto, to paying for attacks on scientific studies and supporting creationist cr*p at national parks — systematically attack to destroy any idea that the environment is something to be protected.

If Teddy Roosevelt were alive today he’d take his big stick and smack the cr*p out of Bush. An old, yellowed press statement with no intention to implement anything productive means complete sh*t to me.

  32. Tuber says:

    #20 Gerald Gibson Jr.,

I’ve seen the Tesla site. Amazing vehicle and it’s published performance specs are incredible. It definitely shows that we, society, are lagging behind technology on this one. Anyone got 100 grand that I could borrow?

What is the difference between an I.C.E. using ethanol versus gasoline from an emissions standpoint?

  33. VerbalKint says:

Bob, I think if Jake worked at Heritage, he would be more focused on issues and less focused on defending the Bush gang at all costs. Jake brings little enthusiasm or effort to his global warming denialism, for example, whereas anyone from Heritage would be all over it (Hippie with a pistol, for example). Jake is RNC all the way.

  34. VerbalKint says:

Perhaps they were roommates at the Ivy-League Stanford there.

Line of the day, Trip, line of the day! LOL.

  35. And You Thought REAGAN Was Stupid says:

Didn’t Bush also promise to cap carbon emissions during his campaign? Yes he did. Another LIE of the Bush administration.

Now, he’s hiding the FACTS about climate change that make his administration look out-of-touch and slow to act. Oh, wait, this is just like this administration’s responses to the 9/11 attacks and to Katrina.

Out of touch and slow: The Bush administration legacy.

  36. bob (not the hacker) says:

    Re 32

    maybe he’s Harriet Miers?

  37. Dale says:

#27, actually, if you go to whitehouse.gov and search for ‘global warming’, it’s the third link down.

but no, it’s much easier to just assume everyone’s an RNC operative.

  38. Jake says:

    Not Canadian:

As I alluded to earlier, federal funding is not the only source for research dollars — my main point remains though: The White House has never denied there is a climate change going on — the sticking points are how much are humans contributing and, even if we are, can we do anything reasonable in response. If the United States magically vanished off the face of the earth, wouldn’t global warming continue?

Blocking government research on climate change is NOT the same thing as “Suppressing the results of completed research.”

  41. Jake says:

Yeah, I figured something like that, Dale.

P.S. to DM — kinda ironic, don’t you think, that you refuse to follow the evidence that Bush does indeed think the environment is something to be protected?

  42. VerbalKint says:

#29 Dale, you are falsely characterizing us. There are many oppositionalists here that I have never accused of working for the RNC. MA, Flaco, Firehead, Howsad, and on and on.

  46. Gerald Gibson Jr says:

P.S. to DM — kinda ironic, don’t you think, that you refuse to follow the evidence that Bush does indeed think the environment is something to be protected?

    Comment by Jake

Words are worthless when they dont match the actions.

  47. VerbalKint says:

Dale and Jake are here disputing reality, as usual.

  48. TripMaster Monkey says:

    Jake sez:

If the United States magically vanished off the face of the earth, wouldn’t global warming continue?

Straw man. No one here has argued that human activity is the sole cause of global warming, let alone just the human activity in the United States.

Also, even if the United States ‘magically’ vanished, the greenhouse gases it had previously emitted would still be present.

All in all, a pretty stupid hypothetical. Par for the course, in other words.

  49. DM says:

#40 There’s no evidence that Bush thinks at all, and much evidence to show that his actions contradict his words.

  50. Patrick1 says:

The federal government should not be spending taxpayers dollars on promoting a “religious” doctrine.

  51. Jake says:

We’ll have to agree to disagree on that then, DM.

  52. Tuber says:

    #42-Gerald Gibson,

Agreed. If only one of the big Detroit boys would come out with a more affordable version of an electric vehicle, say an entry level model. They could call it something like “EV1″ or something to signify that it is just the beginning of great things to come. If only.

Still looking for info on the emissions differences between Ethanol and Gasonline. Anyone know of any sources? The google keeps wanting to sell me canned corn.

  53. Dale says:

#46, yes, because as many have said, the time for discussion about global warming is over… we shouldn’t be discussing the veracity of the info at all.

  54. And You Thought REAGAN Was Stupid says:

The federal government should not be spending taxpayers dollars on promoting a “religious” doctrine. Comment by Patrick1

Good. So long “Faith-Based Initiatives.” Good riddance.

  55. Perry Logan says:

When you find yourself fighting all the scientists in the world, it’s time to question your paradigm.

  56. FoolsontheHill says:

Are these impeachable offenses? Or do Americans have to be floating dead and being eaten by their pets for Congress to do something?

  57. DM says:

#50 If you think that Bush has put as much thought into global warming as a legitimate concern as he has in tearing down science that proves global warming is an urgent issue, then I suppose we do. I can’t imagine why a person would want to convince himself of that, but it’s your prerogative.

  58. AshenShard says:

This is a good example of this administrations tactics … say one thing and do the total opposite … pretend to be doing what is good for this country, say they are doing what is good for this country, and then turn around and stab lady liberty in the back.

And none of those attacking Al Gore and global warming science have not actually listened to Gore, or read anything of substance. Like good sheep, they eat and regurgitate the talking points that have been given to them.

The right is constantly harping on the need for bipartisanship, blaming the Dems and liberals for being partisan. Getting behind policy that tackles environmental issues and addresses our impact is the great issue of our day that not just all Americans, but all peoples around the world can unite. Unfortunately, the right only sees war as a unifying factor, blinded by the ‘glory’ of WWII. They also attack the messenger, running with lies to smear them. They attack the science treating as a danger the want to save our planet, our environment so our civilization can continue to thrive. Instead they are concerned about how it will impact their bottom line. What a bunch of greedy pigs, willing to throw the dice and risk eventual extinction all in the name of wealth.

  59. VerbalKint says:

I find it curious that the same people who will defend Bush no matter what are almost all global warming denialists.

  60. KactionJ says:

    Tuber @ 51 –

Don’t have a link for you, but from what I understand, the issue with ethanol from corn is not that its actual emissions aren’t lower than gas, they are. The problem is that corn itself is a ghg-intensive crop, both for fertilizing and harvesting. So once one adds those ghg costs to the emissions, corn-based ethanol is, at best, marginally better emissions-wise than gasoline. Sugar-cane based ethanol is quite a bit better, and cellulosic ethanol (switchgrass, corn waste, etc.) is expected to be much better than gasoline. Hope that helps. If you want a link I would suggest searching realclimate.org, I’m sure they have discussed the matter previously.

  62. veritas says:

If this isn’t quintessential “propaganda machine” at it’s finest, then I don’t know what is. It’s certainly classic “fascism” when the truth about the future of this planet is squelched by Big Industry for short-term profit & racketeering. This group of repugnant thugs will stoop to no low to justify their corruption.

  63. veritas says:

I’d like someone to point out ONE THING that is NOT CORRUPT about anything Bush has his fingerprint on! I dare you!!

  64. Tuber says:

    #60-KactionJ,

Thank you for the suggestion, I’ll check it out.

Also, I’d like to do some research on current electric engine/motor technology from the perspective of how I would go about converting a small pickup to being powered and driven by an electric power plant. Any help or suggestions on this would be appreciated.

“President Bush and Prime Minister Howard agreed that climate change poses a serious long-term challenge” —-SO WHY THE HELL AREN’T EITHER OF THEM DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT, OR MAKING ANY SERIOUS CONCERTED EFFORT THROUGH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF POLICIES DESIGNED TO COUNTER CLIMATE CHANGE? THE REASON FOR THIS LACK OF ACTION ON THEIR PARTS IS THAT FACT THAT BOTH ARE IN THE PAY OF Big Business, The Military Industrial Complex, Big Oil, Logging, Coal, IN SHORT, ALL THE POLLUTING-CAUSING CREEPS THAT THEY ARE EASING RESTRICTIONS ON IN ORDER TO FILL THEIR DEEP POCKETS WITH AS MUCH ILLEGAL BRIBES AS THEY CAN MANAGE TO CARRY—-BOTH CHIMPya and Howard SHOULD GET SKIN CANCER FROM SUN EXPOSURE AND DIE HORRIBLY FOR THEIR PERFIDIOUS SINS AGAINST THEIR RESPECTIVE COUNTRIES AND THE EARTH!!!!
