White House Stands By Swift Boat Nominee, Blames Withdrawal On ‘Partisan Politics’

This morning, the White House withdrew the nomination of Swift Boat Vets funder Sam Fox to be ambassador to Belgium. If there was any question whether the White House’s move was a gesture of good will towards Sen. John Kerry (D-MA), that has been put to rest.

During today’s press briefing, White House spokesperson Dana Perino stood by Sam Fox, calling him a qualified candidate and saying that President Bush was “disappointed” that senators had rejected him “based on partisan politics instead of his leadership abilities.” (Explaining Fox’s qualifications, Perino twice mentioned the fact that Fox was named “St. Louis Citizen Of The Year” in 2003.) Asked whether the White House thought Fox’s contributions to a group that smeared veterans should have been an issue, Perino said, “No, I don’t think it is.”

Also, while only Sens. Kerry and Chris Dodd (D-CT) had formally announced their opposition to Fox’s nomination, Perino revealed that Fox was pulled because “his nomination would not have passed” the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Transcript:

Q: What happened to the Sam Fox nomination?

PERINO: Sam Fox nomination, let me — I did take a couple notes on that. As you saw, we sent up a withdrawal for Sam Fox’s nomination. The President believes that Mr. Fox is qualified to serve as Ambassador to Belgium. He has a proven record of leadership and a strong willingness to serve our country. He has a long list of accomplishments including one of them being named the St. Louis Citizen of the year. Unfortunately we received word that because of politics, some members of the Senate would have voted against his nomination, which would have prevented him from serving in this important position. So we are disappointed that they made their decision based on partisan politics instead of his leadership abilities, and that’s why we withdrew the nomination.

The votes weren’t there because of his $50,000 contribution to the Swift Boat group?

PERINO: I don’t know what all the reasons were, in terms of individual members making that decision, but we do think that he was qualified to serve but we have withdrawn his nomination.

Do you think his involvement with the Swiftboat group should be an issue, or should have been an issue?

PERINO: You know, I think you look at his — no, I don’t think it is, but of course members of Congress can make their own decisions. Senators can look at any nominee and weigh that decision. I think that if you weighed — if you look, he was chairman and CEO of the Harbor Group Ltd., serving key leadership roles in cultural, education, and charitable institutions in St. Louis, on and on, and again, St. Louis Citizen of the Year, so I think that Senators have to make their own decisions, but obviously this is a person who’s qualified to serve as ambassador.

+++

Did the White House know about his contribution before they nominated him?

PERINO: Uh, there’s no, I don’t believe so, but I know that the President did not when he nominated him. So…

Would that have had an effect?

PERINO: I don’t know.

Did senators threaten to put holds on him…

PERINO: I don’t know. I do know that they were — his nomination would not have passed today if the vote had been called up.

And why not let the vote go ahead?

PERINO: We just decided to withdraw his name.

    #2 Vulgar moron

This administration has divided this country on purpose. They can reach into the till of a divided nation, they created, any time and blame partisan politics….How convenient. I can’t wait to see these people in 10 years with sagging jowls and diminished lives. They have no real lives accept feeding off of others and trying to steal everyone blind

  11. gummitch says:

No “partisan politics” in that Swiftboat bullsht. Only Democrats are guilty of partisan politics; for Republicans it’s just good strategy.

  12. Tuber says:

This is interesting, but only in the same context that a train wreck is “interesting”. Blood, guts, mangled wreckage, and the body counts of victims. But in the end, it is just macabre theatre diverting attention and focus from the more heinous and dire crimes that we, as a nation, are directly responsible for or complicit in through our feigned ignorance and apathy.

We are 4 years into a “war” that we were deceived and misled into engaging in against an innocent citizenry with over 600,000 murdered to date and countless injured and maimed. Some called the bullsh*t from the beginning. Others became wise to it soon after the start. Yet the murder, mayhem, rape, and violent oppression continue to this day because we just cannot figure out how to stop pulling the trigger. Shame on each and every one of us.

Then there is the morally criminal torture and imprisonment of foreigners and our own citizens that continues unabated. I can only say “morally criminal” because we made it LEGAL through the MCA. Nobody talks about this at all anymore which is as reprehensible as the act itself.

We allow spying on our own citizens, ALL of them. We allow war profiteers to not only steal from us, but also our unborn children and grand children. We accept deception and corruption as being just part of the political game. We allow for our own family, neighbors, and friends to be exploited and used as tools of oppression. Some at the cost of their very lives. Others at the cost of their mental well being, their happiness, their souls.

We are standing on the precipice of starting another monumental act of murder and every crime against humanity imaginable against Iran. Many don’t care in the least because of their racism and bigotry. Most don’t concern themselves with it because they believe that we would never attack an innocent country, murder innocent people, and engage in genocide. How anyone can believe such with the Iraq atrocity continuing even as we speak cannot be dismissed as just inbred ignorance, but it is criminal negligence.

Are we going to continue to entertain ourselves with trite political theatre while the blood flows like rivers and our soul becomes so black that the light of a thousand suns would not be able to illuminate it in the least? Are we going to continue to allow our worries about mortgages, car payments, or what version of the iPod to buy to outweigh our moral obligation not just to our society and constitution, but to humanity as a whole? If you are blessed enough to have a child, then look into their eyes and tell them now that you threw away their future and their very life because you were afraid that you might not be able to pay the cable bill.

We are running out of time, my fellow Americans. The situation is no longer urgent, it is dire.

For those of you who wish to continue in complacent and arrogant ignorance, here is your news:
    - Heather Mills leg did not fly off
    - McCain is still a liar and a thief
    - Two “important” Americans have the same affliction that hundreds of thousands of lesser Americans do, cancer.
    - North Dakota regained the world record for generating the most simultaneous snow angels.

You know, it’s too bad that the Congress is now in Democratic control because of the blatant “partisan politics” of elections.

All of those Americans who voted for Democrats instead of Republicans put partisan politics ahead of the interests of the nation.

  16. Democrat Soldier says:

Well, if the current administration would STOP playing “partisan politics” all the time, maybe they wouldn;’t get caught up in their self-generated “partisan politics” problems.

Partisan politics? Of course Sam Fox was rejected on the basis of partisan politics, he chose to engage in them when he smeared Kerry in 2004. It was then that he clearly chose to emphasize his partisan actions over whatever leadership abilities he possesses.

Tuber – personally, I find your passion inspiring. I myself worry that we’re letting ourselves get distracted by all these scandals that we’re getting deluged with. Thanks for urging us to keep our eyes (and hearts) on what REALLY matters! (like the survival of our country and our planet for ex.)

  30. ValiantVenusGrewFromUranus says:

Standing by a “Swiftboater”, while accusing others of *partisan-politics*! The GOP is ON-MESSAGE, all right, and the message is HYPOCRISY!! BAHAHA, no wonder the latest polling shows ever declining support for the GOP by American voters. They haven’t been this unpopular in over a generation! I say keep it up GOP, you’re doing a fine job of campaigning for the opposition ;)

  31. Andrew says:

Did Bush think that Kerry would just let bygones be bygones? Did he think Kerry would not be man enough to speak out? Did he think that Kerry would be professional enough to just overlook the smear campaign and approve Fox anyway?

The only similar experience, that Bush has in this arena was the 2000 campaign and John McCain. Bush cronies smeared McCain in South Carolina and four years later McCain hugged Bush in front of the national media.

I guess Kerry was not willing to play the same toadie. Today the White House withdrew Fox’s nomination in advance of almost certain defeat at the hands of Kerry’s committee.

    Comment by dlet — March 28, 2007 @ 3:29 pm

Being in the technology industry myself, I can tell you that this is true 100%. We do not lead, we follow. This is all part of Globalization, aka a New World Order. All of our R&D, manufacturing has gone away. People can’t improve on products they don’t make.

Most of the companies in this country OEM products from Taiwan or China. The only thing that they had any say in was what the plastic shell will look like.

Globalization is a very bad thing for this country, when it is combined with off shoring.

I am all for Dana keeping the job at this time. Americans are better served by secretarys that speak the truth as much as possible. 45. Jeke says:

What part of the White House has not engaged in partisan politics?

If the White House pulled Sam Foxs’ name it was probably not because of the Democrats, but as Harriet Miers, due to Republican lack of support and or cronyism.

Is this the same Sam Fox of the?
    Harbour Group (Sam Fox)
    Libby Legal Defense Trust
    Bush Pioneer 2000
    Bush Pioneer 2004 Ranger
    Yes.

October 2002, The Harbour group, SBSF and the Republican-leaning Alexander Strategy Group announced that they were forming a “tri-partisan” strategic alliance to provide “the best legal, political and legislative resources available in the Nation’s capital.

Why does the name Alexander group sound familiar?

On January 9, 2006, ASG announced it would be closing shop due to being “fatally damaged by publicity about the ongoing federal investigation into the affairs of” and “its ties to disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff and former House majority leader Tom DeLay.

Well, even the Swiftboaters couldn’t swifboat that one =)

  65. mbbsdphil says:

As Mr. Bush would be the first to admit, partisan politics are not all bad. They are reprehensible when they mislead Americans about what our government is doing and on whose behalf, and when they thwart the will of the people and the execution of our laws, or seek to insulate a favored few from the equal application of those laws regardless of race, color, creed, national origin or wealth.

The probes of Mr. Bush’s conduct already launched, and those yet to come, may be partisan. They are also legitimate and purposeful. Pursuing and cooperating with them would be in the best interests of the United States. Obstructing them would be partisan politics of the worst kind.

#64 Eloquently stated! When the american people and this congress gets done with Mr. Bush, he’ll probably be ready for a mental institution. Today he looked absolutely “unglued” as he threatened Pelosi et al with regard to the Iraq bill. He’s coming apart at the seams…and those seams are not bound too tightly to begin with, as we all know. I suspect that either his shrink will begin medicating him as Pelosi clearly recognized with her comment of “take a deep breath and settle down with the threats” and made a point of it to the american people. People who have read “Bush on the Couch” by Justin A. Frank, M.D. already know that he has had mental problems and it’s beginning to manifest itself now with each passing day.

Of course, anyone who has lied consistently and then lied again to cover each lie up…..has much to remember and much to defend. It’s no wonder he’s “paranoid” and “delusional”.

LOL That is a tiny box you have. This is another show of your stupidity.

  89. valiant venus says:

4Truth – the “New Age Sensitive” man is phony…..unless they over bonged their brains (and are still living in their adolescent fantasies)….then we call them Leftards.

(Anyone of the male persuasion who needed the “clarification” is trying to appear “sensitive”. Lib men discovered years ago that they “got lucky” more often with “liberated” women if they appeared sensitive.)

  90. CoffinsDrapedWithFlags says:

She stammers a lot… guess Bush lied to her, too. Like boy George didn’t know that Fox gave money to the Swift Boaters… and we are suppose to believe. Heh!

  91. ForTruth says:

    So Valient,

You are saying I am really not sensitive and its a game to get laid. Well I’m not in the market to get laid, so what’s my motivation to “appear” that way?

  92. ForTruth says:

    Valient,

If I didn’t know better, I would say you can’t accept a man who would be aware of your emotional needs and try to meet them, because of your own self-esteem issues. You feel more comfortable with an abusive jerk.

  93. ForTruth says:

    Valient,

I never go lucky for being sensitive, it really worked against me in the “getting laid” department. Becuase all the young women were interested in the “bad boys” like you. So I still don’t see any reasons for it other than intrinsic.

  94. ForTruth says:

    Valient,

If you accepted the “new age sensitive man” as being for real, you would have to come to terms with the fact that you can’t get one for yourself, and have to keep settling with abusive jerks.

  95. valiant venus says:

4Truth – if my husband, “Prince Valiant” qualifies as a “bad-boy” then you’re more screwed up than I thought.

P.S. I’m not so needy as to need to have my emotional needs met by someone else – that’s kind of like looking for someone else to make YOU happy…..but I think there are alot of “The View” viewers who would agree with you!

(FYI – happiness is an inside job — sadly, many progressives look like they could use an extra dose of fiber…..

  96. ForTruth says:

    Valient,

You are not married. So whatever with that one.

You got me on the emotional needs part, touche’.

I still think you go with abuse jerks anyway.

You know the talk, but you still seem to express your own inner unhappiness quite often here at TP. You don’t seem to feel women have an equal place.

And you don’t even know how screwed up I am, so don’t even try to go there.

  97. Tuber says:

    Valient & ForTruth,

You folks need to get a room.

  98. ForTruth says:

Is that why you’re single? Because the men you describe, are all of the an*l cyst draft dodgers you call *leaders* – living in their adolescent fantasies. There you are – keeping them *company*.

Just so you know, sensitivity in men comes *after* adolescence – st*pid c*nt.

    BHAAHAHAHAHA, you’re a st*pid c*nt – little Mighty Anorexic!

For a 23 year old girl, you sound just like a 12 year old boy! Why do you hate *men* and *women* so much? Is it because you can’t make up your own mind *which* you are?

  105. ForTruth says:

    Valient,

C’mon now, you are still trying to keep up that charade about having some kind of family? I thought your kids were dead? I think you lie even when it’s not necessary, and telling the truth would be just as easy.

  106. valiant venus says:

    C’mon 4Truth – I should believe you’re a “straight”, sensitive, hard-working sort of guy………because????? Sorry, but nothing you’ve written here demonstrates any of that.…..

  107. ForTruth says:

Valient you live in an alternative reality.

I try to have a civil converstation with you, and you resort to lies.

  108. ForTruth says:

    Whatever….

Yup I’m sure all the posters who know me would agree I never show an interest in hetersexuality. I never talk about hot chicks and boobs and stuff. Right?

  109. ForTruth says:

    Gotta go,

I have to get my nails done, buy tickets to the musical, get that Barbera Striesand CD, plan my costume for the gay pride parade, and shave my a**hole.

BHAHAHAHA, you think I’m Hendler? BAHAHA, now *that* is funny! I agree he is quite *queenie*, but he’s one of those *masculine* GOP men you so love! I’m sure he’s WAY more butch than your *imaginary* husband though!

You’ve seen me posting for so long, and you miss that my handle makes fun of the two st*pidest trolls around – you and Hendler!

But it’s very *funny* that you’re so st*pid you smeared Hendler! I just love it!

Hear that Jason, valiant venus thinks you’re a *queen*! But we all knew that! After all, what female hating GOP right wingnut isn’t a big old closet queen???? As for you venus, you’re right. Compared to *you*, Jason is particularly queenie. Did you go to one of those lesbian colleges – or did you just experiment with your sorority sisters? 120. ForTruth says:

Yeah I saw the page. I didn’t try to look that close.

  121. Democrat Soldier says:

#116 – Tom, actually “swiftboaters” are the antithesis of “comrades in arms.”

“Swiftboaters” work to tear down people that have honorably served. “Swiftboaters” are backstabbers to veterans, and have the same “honor” as traitors and other neo-conservative types: none.

True veterans may disagree with other veterans, but they’d never lie about people with whom they’ve never served. “Swiftboating” is a term used by veterans to describe those that are deserve of contempt, are incapable of speaking the truth, and should be ignored.

  122. ForTruth says:

Sorry Tom the place has pretty much been hijacked.

    Waxman, yesterday:

“I think that the basic rules of gov’t is that federal agencies are NOT to be used for gov’t politicing. The rules for anybody heading up an ag’cy is that they have to follow the rules that say that gov’t resources are NOT to be used for partisan politics, they can’t give no bid contracts to their friends, and they should listen to their career staff and auditors when it involves millions of dollars out of the taxpayers’ pockets.”

I think we’re about to find out that the Justice Dept. career staff want to disgorge all sorts of details about Bushco criminality.
