Yesterday, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) told CNN that that President Bush’s escalation in Iraq is going so well, “General Petraeus goes out there almost every day in an unarmed humvee.” On Monday, he told radio host Bill Bennett that there “are neighborhoods in Baghdad where you and I could walk through those neighborhoods, today.”
This morning, during an interview with McCain, CNN’s John Roberts rebutted McCain’s assertions, stating, “I checked with General Petraeus’s people overnight and they said he never goes out in anything less than an up-armored humvee.” He added that a new report by retired Gen. Barry McCaffrey “said no Iraqi government official, coalition soldier, diplomat reporter could walk the streets of Baghdad without heavily armed protection.”
Faced with overwhelming evidence that he was wrong, McCain denied he’d ever said it: “Well, I’m not saying they could go without protection. The President goes around America with protection. So, certainly I didn’t say that.” Watch it:
CNN’s Baghdad correspondent Michael Ware, who has lived in Iraq for four years, said military sources greeted McCain’s comments yesterday with “laughter down the line.”
UPDATE: AmericaBlog has a great idea to get to the bottom of this: call McCain’s office and ask him to name the “neighborhoods” in Baghdad that are safe enough to walk around.
Transcript:
CNN’S JOHN ROBERTS: I wanted to talk to you about the situation in Iraq. Yesterday in an interview with Wolf Blitzer on The Situation Room. I want to play this back for you. You had this to say about the situation there.
[McCAIN CLIP]: General Petraeus goes out there almost every day in an unarmed humvee. I think you oughta catch up. You are giving the old line of three months ago. I understand it. We certainly don’t get it through the filter of some of the media.
ROBERTS: Senator, did you mean to say that, that General Petraeus goes out every day in an unarmed humvee?
SEN. JOHN McCAIN (R-AZ): I mean that there are neighborhoods safe in Iraq and he does go out into Baghdad and the fact is there has been significant progress and people are stuck in a time warp of three months ago. Of course, it’s still dangerous. Of course it’s still very dangerous. We only have two of the five brigades there and we are already seeing significant progress.
ROBERTS: Because I checked with General Petraeus’s people overnight and they said he never goes out in anything less than an up-armored humvee. You also told Bill Bennett on his radio program on Monday. You said there are neighborhoods in Baghdad where you and I could walk through those neighborhood today yet retired General Barry McCaffrey said no Iraqi government official, coalition soldier, diplomat reporter could walk the streets of Baghdad without heavily armed protection. We’ve got two different stories here. Who’s right?
McCAIN: Well, I’m not saying they could go without protection. The President goes around America with protection. So, certainly I didn’t say that.

March 28th, 2007 at 10:51 amMcCain hasn’t changed. The media has. Now they call him on his crap. The credit for this probably belongs to the blogosphere. The MSM has finally realized that these lies will be revealed on the internet leaving the MSM, who lets them spew this garbage without rebuttal, looking as deranged as the Republicans.
March 28th, 2007 at 10:55 amThat’s the “Straight Talk Express” in action!
March 28th, 2007 at 10:56 amI don’t mean to poo-poo this site’s choice of material, but would it be possible to limit the McCain stories to one a day?
He’s over. No longer newsworthy. There’s just no point in paying attention to him any longer, especially given this administration’s intent to attack Iran in just a week and a half.
March 28th, 2007 at 10:57 amI believe this bears repeating…
McCain, walking with Baghdad Bob Gates, remarked how lovely the spring landscape looked in the city this morning. John quietly remarked that he never knew how beautiful KABOOM!!

March 28th, 2007 at 10:58 amMcCain has lost what little bit of a spine he had. Sad, real sad.

THIS President can’t go ANYWHERE without protection.
March 28th, 2007 at 11:05 amit’s sad really. this time he doesn’t need the Rove machine to knock him down. He’s doing it all by himself. The swift boaters won’t need to go after him anymore. He’s done.
March 28th, 2007 at 11:05 amBTW, that’s a great picture of him about to fall asleep, deep, deep sleep.
When you awake you will resign your seat, and go hide in the desert.
On the count of three you will wake up and leave, 1, 2, …
March 28th, 2007 at 11:05 amPoliticians should not be allowed to re-interpret their own words like this, not when they’re already on the record.
March 28th, 2007 at 11:08 amBeing Bush isn’t working for Bush, so why is McCain trying it? Obviously he hasn’t heard that insanity means doing the same thing over again while expecting different results.
I’m glad the Repugs have crazy people like this running for their bid. It’ll make it much easier to get a Democrat elected in 2008 and keep a Democratic Congress – so that we can finally get out of Iraq, National Health Care and get rid of No Child Left Behind – among many other things.
March 28th, 2007 at 11:09 amHe’s merely channeling “Uncle Joe” Carson. That’s what Uncle Joe did every time he got caught telling a whopper down at Drucker’s General Store. More homespun horse*hit.
March 28th, 2007 at 11:09 amGoodbye, John. You once were a man of integrity. But, after Bush and Rove called you unpatriotic in your 2000 presidential campaign, you have rolled over like a sad, old lapdog, waiting for another bellyrub. Buh-bye, old spineless one.
March 28th, 2007 at 11:10 amIt’s the area around George W. Bush Square.
March 28th, 2007 at 11:11 am[...] Update: “I never said that.” [...]
March 28th, 2007 at 11:13 amHey just because he said it doesn’t mean he said it. See, there’s a little man who lives in his mouth that sounds just like him. Sometimes he just yells “redrum!”
March 28th, 2007 at 11:14 amTo be fair he didn’t say Praeus didn’t go out without protection(escort). Although his stupity shines through his origional fantasy land description of Iraq where Americans can stroll through parts of Baghdad without fear, he doesn’t need to have his words vaguely connected together to make him sound like an idiot.
March 28th, 2007 at 11:14 amMcCain hasn’t changed. The media has. Now they call him on his crap. The credit for this probably belongs to the blogosphere. Comment by dorothy — March 28, 2007 @ 10:55 am
Good point. It’s been obvious since November that the MSM has been playing attention to us and what we’re saying. The polical blogs cover a story and within a day or two (sometimes hours), the MSM is covering it. Glad to see that We The Sane People have regained our voice, and as a result, some control of our democractic country.

He’s still running for President isn’t he? Or should we just stop talking about what an idiot he is and be super scared about somethin’ else, huh?
March 28th, 2007 at 11:17 amTell you what, how about we multi task this one. We get to continue laughing about McCain while we tell Bush where he can shove his fear mongering. OK? OK.
un ~ I just hope to hell he gets the Repukelican nomination for, dare I say it… The Presidency!
March 28th, 2007 at 11:18 amIt’s on video, moron! Just admit you were either lying or stupid and move on.
It’s fun watching McCain just dig the hole deeper and deeper. Now he’s not only on the hook saying something really really wrong, but he’s also on the hook for pretending he didn’t say it.
I repeat: moron!
March 28th, 2007 at 11:19 amun ~ I just hope to hell he gets the Repukelican nomination for, dare I say it… The Presidency!

LOL… Not only would that be self-destructive for the Repugs, but it would be really entertaining for us :)
March 28th, 2007 at 11:25 amGeez, John, it is not like we can’t go back and replay the clip to show the lie over and over again.
What is it with these Republicans that think they can lie to us on video and then refute their own words later, denying they said what they obviously did?
March 28th, 2007 at 11:30 amMcCain: Did I say that? I don’t remember saying that. If I said that, I didn’t mean to say that. I didn’t say what you think I said. Of course I wouldn’t say what you said I said because I didn’t say it, and if I did, I didn’t mean what you thought I meant…

March 28th, 2007 at 11:49 amIs it any wonder why Bush/Iraq Use of Military Force supporters show up here and elsewhere with their “facts”, and we can’t fathom why they would continue to believe them? They listen to Bennett/Rush/etc., maybe Blitzer (but, more likely, shows like Bennett’s quote Blitzer’s show to give their “facts” a “real news” sheen), and come here and think that those who speak with the well-sourced “facts” are nuts.

March 28th, 2007 at 12:03 pmLike I have said before I won’t be surprised when it comes out that McCain is on some heavy drugs. Is there anyone more delusional than John McCain?
March 28th, 2007 at 12:06 pmThe POTUS does not go ANYWHERE in these United States without protection, Sen. McCain!! He came to my town and there was the most humongous motorcade ever, with police from each town on his route at every highway exit and entrance. McCain is deluded about Iraq and deluded about the presidency, which says a lot about his fitness for that office.
March 28th, 2007 at 12:09 pmA senile old fart named McCain
March 28th, 2007 at 12:11 pmhas clearly lost bits of his brain.
With his gaffes now on tape
he has failed to escape
from the wreck of the straight talk express train.
When McCain said “The President goes around America with protection”, he really meant to say “Bill Clinton goes around America with protection”. Surely Clinton has to be involved here somehow.
March 28th, 2007 at 12:13 pmCNN this morning is running a piece about McCain’s comments. Basically the Bahgdad reporter is saying he’s delusional if he thinks Americans can walk the streets of that city unprotected.
March 28th, 2007 at 12:14 pmIf anybody is stuck in a time warp, it’s John McCain.
March 28th, 2007 at 12:17 pmOut of the way, folks! Here comes the “Crooked Talk Weinermobile (TM)!” Toot-toot!
March 28th, 2007 at 12:20 pmMcCain should have weakly brain scans so we can study the rapid degradation to brain tissue from spewing lies. Maybe this would help all politicians stay on the straight and narrow.
March 28th, 2007 at 12:23 pmI’m calling McCain’s office today and pitching an idea for a great campaign event! I’m going to suggest that McCain go on an unarmed walking tour of Iraqi neighborhoods to show America just how safe it is today after the surge! I’m sure they’ll want to move right away on this one.

March 28th, 2007 at 12:50 pmWell at least he was proved wrong. We don’t need another president who will continue the escalation of troops in Iraq and the danger that they and so many others are already in. Instead we should be focusing our resources on getting them out and promoting better foreign policy by increasing our foreign aid. According to the Borgen Project, only .16% of our federal budget is spent on this important issue.

March 28th, 2007 at 12:56 pmThe poor man needs medical attention. Between this and his stunt the other day in the interview about birth control, he’s clearly showing signs of mental impairment. It’s pathetic that there is no one close to him with the compassion to take him in hand and get him help.
Maybe it’s not Alzheimers. Maybe he’s having a bad reaction to his meds, and they could be adjusted. It’s just cruel to let him wander around this way, embarrassing himself. Doesn’t his family love him?
March 28th, 2007 at 1:05 pmEver notice that Repubs never mean what they say? They always mean something much more qualified than what they actually said.
March 28th, 2007 at 1:09 pmOh ohh looks like someone got caught in a McFibb and on tape no less, I smell another U tube hit. All he needs to do is take Rove’s advice and say that “Mistakes Were Made”, over and over and over again, and never take responcibilty for his own incompetant statments and actions, hey it’s worked for Gonzo, Bush and so on .. Ahhh how Repug-nican.
March 28th, 2007 at 1:11 pm
Okay McCain has a mental health problem. He apparently has problems with reality. Maybe he read that “Secret” book and took the book a little to far with putting on rose colored glasses with whatever he wants to see positively(he thinks thinks thinks Bagdad is safe so there for it is!). I mean he’s this bad during the beginnings of his presidential Was he doing poltical suicide on purpose? Maybe he needs to join ex Rep. Foley in rehab for maybe drugs/booze McCain is taking or maybe McCain needs drugs! Or maybe the poor old oaf has become senile like Regan. Good lord no way! we do not need another senile president! And another STUPID president! Good-bye McCain your intelligence and credability has gone out the window for GOOD!
March 28th, 2007 at 1:16 pmYou all realize that “unarmed Humvee” isn’t the same as “unarmored Humvee“, right?
McCain said “unarmed Humvee”. So why prove him wrong by saying that Petraeus rides in an uparmored Humvee?
March 28th, 2007 at 1:24 pmHopefully, voters will realize Progs should have NOTHING to do with national defense. The “instant breakfast, instant gratification” crowd of the 60’s will NEVER approve of incremental improvements in Baghdad’s cultural and security problems. The “Make Love Not War” crowd of yesteryear are todays’ elderly liberal “gray beards”. I have yet to read ONE positive bit of info regarding our military or it’s operation here at TP – NOT ONE. (Note to TP’s Editorail Crew – terrorists don’t LIKE you, either.)
When binLaden declared war on the West, Progs rolled over and went back to sleep. Both Parties treated binLaden as an annoying mosquito – forgetting, of course, the deadly strains of disease a mosquito can spread. Thankfully, a segment of this country woke up and took notice. Too bad they are not Congressional Democrats.

Where have I heard that before??
March 28th, 2007 at 1:43 pmMcCain’s ambition has made him a pathetic joke; he’s become a caracture of himself.
March 28th, 2007 at 2:21 pm#66, It’s a fair point, Murdoc, as far as it goes, but are any up-armored Humvees unarmed? Also, without having the transcript between John Roberts and General Petraeus’s people, we can’t know who misunderstood whom/who misspoke. Besides, even if vindicated on that point, McCain would have one outstanding lie remaining.
#67, Hi. You’re mostly off-topic. Also, wrong. C’mon, name some names! Back up your assertions! Make those progressives wilt under your unrelenting pressure!

March 28th, 2007 at 3:32 pmIf McCain knew that Petraeus rode around in an unarmored Humvee and broadcast that fact, wouldn’t that be revealing military secrets?

March 28th, 2007 at 11:28 pmI think the good Senator has restarted cancer treatment and he’s hiding this fact, I also highly suspect ALL the money he’s raising is for him to keep sadly under u.s. Law a candidate all one has to do is make it “look real” and loses in the primaries and pockets the money and REALLY keeps it if he plans to RETIRE clever but soo obvious OR the money is for help for him and HIS wife she last I heard had cancer problems as well so take your pick! I hope I’m wrong about McCAIN but he lost my respect when he got swift boated by this current idiot child in the White House in a presidential primary I think in 2000? and he lost total respect when he just refused to defend his family HONOR!! I have met him in Sacramento, california I was working for him when he was running back then against GW the one thing we both went back and forth on email wise we stayed in touch off and on and we both hotly disagreed over the domestic issue on if that child Elian Gonzales should be returned to his father in Cuba and of course Clinton’s people opted to return the Boy back to Cuba I felt he should have been returned as well Mr. McCAIN strongly disagreed but I told him wait Senator it’s a boy who should be with his father? but he wouldn’t hear any of it ! he was very anti-communist cold war mind-set. He was doing a favor for me in a privacy issue invasion issue involving a neo-conservative supervisor harrassing a friend of mine by over-kill on monitoring employee emails and it was racial discrimination as well John McCAIN made a deal with me to take care of the problem.
March 28th, 2007 at 11:48 pmat the time he was chairman of the Senate commerce committee this was all pre-9/11 of course, John and I discovered my friend had a pretty high security clearance with a reserve military unit and we both wanted to protect his rights and make sure nothing was EVER seen by anyone else email wise it was the very time the u.s. business industry insisted on the rights of monitoring workers emails, Mr. McCAIN INSISTED as part of the deal to firewall off my friend’s email traffic BUT he said under the contractual agreement my friend signed with the u.s. military he said the military enforces the right of them to go in his email files and of course monitor his traffic the deal was struck. So this should give you all an idea on what he’s like .
Americans seem to easily forget history. McCain has always been a sleaze bag. He was one of the Keating 5 in 1989 during the savings and loan scandal. He was a slime ball then and always has been until the MSM made up out to be a white knight and maverick.

March 29th, 2007 at 4:31 amAh…. if I only had a dollar for every time Bush made such a stupid, ignorant, plainly false statement that one’s jaw is left hanging open and they’re asking themselves “did he really say that?” Yet, that did not stop the good people of this nation from re-electing him. Remember, even idiots have the right to vote. Unfortunately, we cannot count McCain out. “Stupid is as stupid does.”
March 29th, 2007 at 4:49 am[...] bad it was for Congress to vote for a timeline given how well things are going in Iraq, and then promptly ate his words from yesterday when challenged. CNN’s Michael Ware yesterday made McCain out to be a fool, and [...]
March 29th, 2007 at 8:33 amIt’s the same tired old Republican swift boat lie tactic. Go on TV and make stuff up. By the time the truth comes out, the damage is done. I just wish the media would call these people out when they say it and not a day or 2 later.
March 29th, 2007 at 9:25 amObviously, another attempt by the “liberal media” to smear a Republican candidate by taking his words “out of context.”
/sarcasm off
March 29th, 2007 at 9:47 amThis guy is officially out of the presidential race, out of his mind, out of anything that remotely represents reality. Did you ever notice the look of surprise on this turds face as he’s eating crow?

March 29th, 2007 at 5:54 pmExactly the same happened with Rumsfeld in an interview (I think with Bob Schiffer and Tom Friedman present) in one Sunday talk show.
March 29th, 2007 at 8:12 pmAlso similar to multiple instances with Dick Cheney and strangely similar to Baghdad Bob.
The story that he was close to leave the GOP in 2001 is chilling and I hope he was not thinking about joining the Democratic Party. What a rotten lemon! I am still waiting for him to fulfill his promise to commit suicide if Democrats won the majority in congress.
SAfe to walk around Baghdad?
2 days ago, I was talking to a non military contractor, who had left Baghdad the same day and had paid $9000 for the 20 mile ride to the airport – 3 SUV’s and 9 armed civilian security personnel wee required.
March 30th, 2007 at 1:07 amWhile the “safe to walk around” comment is asinine and obviously false, apparently nobody else sees the difference between “unarmed” and “un-armored” – but there is one, I assure you. Hint: armor can’t be used offensively, wereas arms can.

Heres some stats that are undisputable. 3,246 american dead, 24,317 american permanently disabled, 414 billion American tax payer dollars. Pick your favorit bush lie to justify this, wmd? shining beacon of freedom other muslim countries will emulate? evil despot? choose all of them and it isnt worth what weve already lost. April 1st, 2007 at 11:17 pmMcCain really looks like a victim – a Stockholm syndrome like glaze over his eyes – that unmistakeable duped expression on his face – like he’s been bamboozled by his best buddies and is trying desparately to look unaffected.
Odds are – someone fed him his lines -patted him on the back- and assured him that the republi-con machine was behind him all the way -and that the media monkeys were way behind the times and out of date- and assured him that -yes- he’d be the shining star divulging all of this really cool stuff – great shining epiphanies all around – and like a lamb to the slaughter, he just walked right into it -splat- not suspecting a thing.
I’m sorry, but people just don’t go all blatantly contrary like that without some strong belief that they’ll be backed up by the machine.
It’s a Rovian masterpiece – you gotta love this guy’s political Kung Fu – this is the next generation of reality TV in the making – can’t wait to see who’s credibility gets shredded next in the public arena!
Think they’ll go ahead and do Rudy or is he the chosen one?
Sculpting the political landscape with words mightier than any sword – a thing of wonder to behold …

April 3rd, 2007 at 6:45 amMcCain is trapped in a web of his own making. When everyone in the country wanted us out of Iraq, he figured that he could corner the right-wingers for the primaries by calling for a crazy increase, or surge, in troop levels there. The problem is, Bush was just crazy enough to call for that surge and now McCain is stuck with it. So now he has to defend it and he is doing it by telling right-wing voters listening to Bill Bennett that the surge is working. Of course the only problem with this is the facts–it is not working. It is only marginally working in Baghdad and, since many freedom fighters (after all these are the people whose freedoms we were so concerned about that we started a preemptive war) have moved out of Baghdad into outlying areas, where bombings and killings have increased. So, yes, the Straight talk Express has derailed. I claim it fell off the rails the minute McCain hugged the man who accused him in South Carolina of having an illegitimate black baby. I hope that no young, independent voter even thinks about voting for McCain again, ever.

April 3rd, 2007 at 8:47 pm#75, #89: Yes, I’m exactly saying that the General might be riding around in an armored and unarmed Humvee. I’m not saying that he is, I’m saying that he might be. I’m also not claiming that McCain is correct in his assessment of the the security level.
I haven’t seen the General’s Humvee, but I suspect that his vehicle is unarmed and the vehicles in front and behind his are armed. Why would the General want the gunner’s butt or crotch in his face all the time?
Why did anyone try to disprove the “unarmed” comment by proving that it’s armored? Probably because they don’t know the difference. Why don’t they know the difference? Probably because they don’t know jack about the military.
Yet they’re going to tell us if the “surge” is working or not.

April 5th, 2007 at 7:40 pmSenator McCaine seems to have lost sense of reasonableness. I feel his mind is getting old and just speaks out his mind without getting the facts. He has no chance of winning the republican ticket for president. He is ar behind in polls. In fact, for many years to come, American voters are not going to elect Republican president, as the present republian presiden Mr. Georage Bush has made a great mess and has created lot of problems for America by his stuburness and uninteligent attitude. I wholehartedly agree with Mr. Donald Trump that Georage Bush is the worst ever president of this great country and have done a very great harm to the good name of USA amoungst the intenal communities and governments.
