Another Gonzales lie.

By Amanda Terkel on Mar 29th, 2007 at 1:51 pm

Another Gonzales lie.

In today’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, former chief of staff to Atttorney General Albert Gonzales confirmed that Gonzales was involved in the prosecutor purge.

Gonzales, 3/12/07:

“I was not involved in seeing any memos, was not involved in any discussions about what was going on.”

Sampson, 3/29/07:

“I don’t think the attorney general’s statement that he was not involved in any discussions of U.S. attorney removals was accurate.”

UPDATE: According to E&P, Sampson said Gonzales was involved in “at least five” discussions about the U.S. attorney firings. (via Atrios)

let’s see where THIS goes… more stonewall is my guess…

And, yes, I DO take it personally

  2. Ben Dover says:

Now we all await the Reich wing trolls as they define the phrase “was accurate”

Wont Gitmo Al look good in prison garb?

  3. Jake says:

Even if inaccurate, was it a “lie”?

  4. Mario says:

I think his later statement was juicier: “I remember discussing with him this process of asking certain U.S. attorneys to resign.”

Bush better dump that Gonzo Toast, it’s ‘gonna set off the smoke alarm!

  6. TripMaster Monkey says:

Cue Shakey Jake yammering on about the definition of ‘lie’ in 3…2…1…

All of this HOOPLA for WHAT!

Waste of time, money, debate about Iraq. You guys need something better to do with your so-called majority.

What’s the Big F’n deal already? Yes, Fredo lied. What would you expect him to say, “Yes, we conspired to fire attorneys who weren’t towing the line?”

  8. Jake says:

Apart from hoestly not remembering, is a discussion about “what was going on” more inclusive or less inclusive than any specific “U.S. attorney removal”?

  9. Jake J. says:

Let’s get this straight one last time, dummies.

    If it’s about a blowjob, it’s a LIE. If it’s not about a blowjob, it’s a MISSTATEMENT.

  10. Jake says:

Gonzales is scheduled to testify himself before the Senate Judiciary Committee the Tuesday after Congress gets back from spring break — is that not soon enough for you?

If it’s the truth, yes. Why is it too much to ask that the Bush Administration start telling the truth?

  12. Jake says:

Also, how exactly is this “another” lie, TP? We are already discussing it in the “Gonzales Lied” thread directly below.

    That would be “Jake”. ;)

  15. Crossing the Rubicon says:

Jake, how can you argue that a lie hasn’t been told? I see what you’re saying (a lie is an intentional misstatement), but you’re being intentionally obtuse here.

You are intentionally using examples that aren’t analogous to the misstatements, such as comments made in threads. When lawyers involved with the White House and DOJ submit letters to Congress, they don’t simply use bad recollection and say things they aren’t sure of. If Congress asks you for some answers, it’s not like anyone just says in response, “we’re not sure of this, but we’ll go ahead and answer Congress as if we are sure of it”.

the fact that the DOJ made the same misstatement in both written form and in congressional testimony means that it was almost certainly intentional. A typical jury seeing that evidence would almost certainly conclude there was intent.

Either Gonzales or Sampson or both have made misstatements; now they’re trying to attribute intent to the other. Regardless, it means one or both of them is a liar.

“Those attorneys weren’t listening to us when we called them and told them to stop their cases against our friends, and start bogus prosecutions against our political opponents, so we fired them; SO WHAT!?!? Jeez, you’d think you’d found some example of abuse of power or something!

“Get a life! Yes, the AG lied under oath. It’s not like that’s an impeachable offense! I mean gimme a break! What are you going to do next, try to impeach a president or something over lying under oath? Like THAT will ever happen!

“Sometimes our elected officials will have to lie to us! It will only be for our own good!”

  18. Patrick1 says:

SEN. Dianne Feinstein has resigned from the Military Construction Appropriations subcommittee. As previously and extensively reviewed in these pages, Feinstein was chairperson and ranking member of MILCON for six years, during which time she had a conflict of interest due to her husband Richard C. Blum’s ownership of two major defense contractors, who were awarded billions of dollars for military construction projects approved by Feinstein.
As MILCON leader, Feinstein relished the details of military construction, even micromanaging one project at the level of its sewer design. She regularly took junkets to military bases around the world to inspect construction projects, some of which were contracted to her husband’s companies, Perini Corp. and URS Corp.

Perhaps she resigned from MILCON because she could not take the heat generated by Metro’s expose of her ethics (which was partially funded by the Investigative Fund of the Nation Institute). Or was her work on the subcommittee finished because Blum divested ownership of his military construction and advanced weapons manufacturing firms in late 2005?

The MILCON subcommittee is not only in charge of supervising military construction, it also oversees “quality of life” issues for veterans, which includes building housing for military families and operating hospitals and clinics for wounded soldiers. Perhaps Feinstein is trying to disassociate herself from MILCON’s incredible failure to provide decent medical care for wounded soldiers.

The NYTimes is demanding an investigation. Arianna Huffington has launched ads lambasting Feinstein. The left-wing blogosphere is an uproar over Feinstein’s war profiteering.

    Kidding.

And your point here is……? Where has there been any charges filed or hearings on this? And how does this relate to this hearing about the US Justice Departmenet? Another Repug attempt to deflect from the truth (Something that has never been a BushCo Family Value!)

  22. Captain Kirk says:

If Gonzalez lied HE NEEDS TO GO!!!

I am sick and tired of government officials from BOTH parties lying, lying and lying.

If we conservatives didn’t accepted and demanded Clinton to step down because he lied, we MUST be consistant and ask Gonazalez to go!!

If it is true he lied, he needs to go NOW!!

f……king politicians, I don’t care what party they belong to, most of them, not all, but most are f….king snakes.

sorry for the f…word, but I am sick and tired of politicians regardless of party.

  23. Captain Kirk says:

Patrick1, if Feinstein lied and took advantage of her Senate position, she needs to go, if Gonzalez lied, he needs to go….

I am sick and tired of the bickering, the incestuous fighting of Americans over the Republican and Democrat party. Both parties are full of corrupt, idiotic, selfish, only want power, I don’t care about the people politicians.

Republicans showed it when they were in power and Democrats are showing it now and have showed it in the past.

  24. Captain Kirk says:

I am sick and tired of the hypocrisy from Liberals and the hypocrisy from Conservatives.

We are all Americans and we are allowing our politics to divide us.

Did you guys know that most politicians that tear each other apart in the public eye are best friends besides closed doors? did you guys know that?

did you know Howard Dean’s family has attended many special family events thrown by the Bushs, unrelated to politics?

I mean honestly, politicians and the media, whether it is blogs like this one or blogs on the right are dividing the american people.

WE ARE ALL AMERICANS FIRST! AND DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS, LIBERALS AND CONSERVATIVES SECOND!
