Conservatives shut down Sampson hearing?

Conservatives shut down Sampson hearing?»

Moments ago, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) interrupted Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA):

LEAHY: If the senator would yield, and I apologize. I apologize to Mr. Sampson. We’ve just received word that the Republicans have objected, under the Senate rules, to this meeting continuing. I think that’s unfortunate, but I will follow the rules of the Senate –

GRASSLEY: Does it apply to a Republican too?

LEAHY: Uh, the Republicans are the ones who don’t want to have the hearing, so the Republicans have the right under the rules to do that. We will stand — we will not adjourn, we will stay in recess until the Senate recesses. We will come back, and Sen. Grassley, if he wishes to be heard further, will be the first one to be heard.

UPDATE: A Senate Judiciary Committee source tells ThinkProgress conservatives objected to the hearing lasting beyond two hours, but then backed down after realizing it was a huge strategic blunder.

Leahy explains: “Just so people can understand what’s going on here. The lack of permission going forward has now been changed. I had raised questions and the — whatever objection there was on the Republican side has been withdrawn, so that we can continue. When Mr. Sampson comes back, we will start with Sen. Durbin. Somebody here just asked me if this all could have just been all an accident, that we had this lack of concurrence by the Republicans to go forward. I grew up in a faith that believes in miracles, and it’s conceivable as an accident, I’ve been here 33 years and I’ve never seen it happen before. So maybe it was, but I suspect it was not.

The committee is back in session now.

  5. Zwack Says:

So, how exactly do they shut down hearings with an objection?

Isn’t there some way to continue the hearing?

    It seems terribly one sided.

    Too late!

We’ve learned enough to warrant subpoenas on several more slime balls.

When the tough gets going, the Repukes cry like babies wearin’ their poopie diapers!!!!

  7. legaleze Says:

    INCREDIBLE!

    As Blumenthal at Salon says:

As Congress extends its oversight, President Bush stiffens his resistance. He treats the Democratic Congress as basically illegitimate. He reacts to every assertion of oversight as an invasion of presidential prerogative. Not only does he reject compromise and negotiation, but he also transforms every point of difference into a conflict over first principles, even as every new disclosure reveals his purely political motivation.

  8. Jake J Says:

So… When Condi and W are getting it on, does anyone else picture George with a ball in his mouth, and Condi with a lot of leather and a whip?

    Poor Laura…

  10. troqua Says:

I really want to know who initiated this. Pay attention to the Senate proceedings??? It’s in a quorum call!

  11. xegar Says:

    Grassleys immediate reaction is interesting.

“Does it apply to Republicans ?”

As if the rules for stopping a hearing would apply to one side and not the other.

  12. Not Canadian Says:

Like I’ve said, keep stonewallin’ Shrub, you’re impeachment hearings are emminent…

  13. chimpeach Says:

Well that certainly is an interesting development. Has there been any more news about it, yet?

And while we’re waiting for status, did anyone watch the Oversight hearing with GSA Administrator Doan from yesterday morning? I stayed up late last night to see it and it was a doozy. I notice that the Republicans have all adopted the “impudent-child-batting-the-microphone-away” technique to show how pissed they are that they’re not in the majority anymore. And Rep. Mica is either off his meds or needs to have his dosage checked. That guy is unstable.

  14. Trevor Says:

I thought there was no fire?
I thought they wanted all of this in the open because nothing was done wrong?

Has anyone noticed how much Bush has been on TV lately?
Anyone notice that just as the hearing started, suddenly Bush was giving a statement so the new cut away?

These people have no shame, no shame at all.

    Comment by Jake — March 29, 2007 @ 2:22 pm
Jake, this is a really stupid comment, even for you. If you read the transcript, Leahy clearly states that they are stopping the hearing because he was following the rules of the senate. Following the rules of the senate is EXACTLY what the democrats are doing. If you have a legitimate argument as to WHY the republicans do not want a hearing that is fine. Present that argument. But a comment like that just makes you look tremendously stupid.

  16. chimpeach Says:

So… When Condi and W are getting it on, does anyone else picture George with a ball in his mouth, and Condi with a lot of leather and a whip?

I try not to picture anything, but sometimes the image of Condi with a strap-on going after Dubya sneaks through.

  18. Dogjudge Says:

How is it that the minority party, the Republicans, are able to shut down this hearing and the Senate Democrats never used the same technique for the last six years?

  19. Dr. Matt Says:

Anyone else smell that? It’s reich-wing fear and desperation. America is wonderful. The conservative movement is dead, GOPigs are the in minority, and America no longer trusts the reich-wingers. America is wonderful.

    Typical Repukes,

They shut it down when the facts are too everwhelming. Like the right blogs just delete you, the right wing family members just hang up on you. Its all the same.

  23. LibStl Says:

What a bunch of pissy pants babies. I’d like to know the reason they stopped this.

  24. Jackie Rawlings Says:

To much information and the White House and GOP had to stop this before more about Karl and Meirs comes out. Congress had the right questions and got answers that all lead to the White House. Now it is to late as Sampson was under oath. Don’t worry NBC David Gregory will spin this one for his best friend Karl Rove. We’re finding out some of our most trusted reporters and in the back pocket of the White House. Like Fingers Foley what you see and hear is always true. I wondered by David Gregory wouldn’t testify in the Libby case now I know why. Sampson let the truth come out and now it’s to late with cover up.

  25. Graham Says:

STOP! Not so close! If you come any closer, we’ll kill this country we’ve taken hostage! I’m warning you…the blood of America is on your hands if you expose us for the crime syndicate we Republicans are!

  26. Jake Says:

    Chris L:

Perhaps you missed the comments here, or even LEAHY: “We’ve just received word that the Republicans have objected, under the Senate rules, to this meeting continuing. Comment by Dogjudge — March 29, 2007 @ 2:29 pm

That’s easy. The Republicans didn’t know what an oversight hearing was, so they didn’t have any.

  31. John Henry Could Hammer Says:

    Leahy says Republican objection withdrawn.

  32. Spudge_Boy Says:

If it is possible to shut down the Senate by having the minority party object, then why the fu*k didn’t the Democrats do this to save America from the sh!t we are in now?

This is really telling about the Democrats allowing the Republicans to sh!t on the Constitution.

  33. Mike Says:

All the tin-foil hat crowd should take a pill and go lie down.

There is a rule in the Senate that a committee hearing can only go on for so long while there is business on the Senate floor, and any Senator can object to a hearing after that time has elapsed. There will be a short recess until the business on the floor is concluded and then the hearing will resume.

It has not been shut down, simply recessed for a short time.

    Get a grip.

  34. TripMaster Monkey Says:

“Does it apply to a Republican too?”

    Unbelievably stupid, Grassley.

  35. tarazan Says:

  36. John Flatbush Says:

I love the smell of democracy. Let the truth come out. Sunlight is the best disinfectant.

  37. Ben Dover Says:

#18 ….Because obviously Democrats believe in representative government and are not afraid for the truth to come out. The Republic Party, as we can now see, wants everything sugar coated but when the sugar rubs off they cry foul and take their ball and go home.

I wonder what the Republic Party will do in 2009 when the extent of their minority status is even greater after the 2008 election? 75 - 25 should be an interesting Senate.

  38. Badmoodman Says:

Seems a juuuuuuust a bit late to close the barn doors, eh?

  39. lw Says:

Things were going so badly for the Republicans that they yelled “I don’t wanna play this game any more!” and knocked over the board, scattering the pieces.

  40. Not Canadian Says:

    Jake,
Perhaps you need a 2nd grade reading comprehension class.

LEAHY: “We’ve just received word that the Republicans have objected, under the Senate rules, to this meeting continuing.

Under house rules, you may object to a hearing, thus it must end. Therefore, by stopping the hearing, the Dems and Repukes were following the rules. The rule doesn’t state that no hearings can take place!

Go take some metamucil, your brain’s all full of crap.

  41. John Henry Could Hammer Says:

Republicans are saying it was a “misunderstanding”.

  44. Saywho Says:

IMaybe we will be looking at a second Civil War here in the US.

  45. I WORFEUS Says:

So Sampson admits Gonzales lied, and the republicans freak out and halt the hearings?

So the republicans are saying, “Yes we are guilty and we are all involved and we want the world to know it”?

  46. dejavu Says:

“Does it apply to a Republican too?”

I think this is the most illustrative quote of them all. To even ask the question implies an implicit assumption that the rules should be different depending on party affiliation. Talk about “IOKIYAR”!!!

  47. Albert Says:

They need a break to coach or threaten Sampson.

  48. dlet Says:

They had to thnk of a way to have a break so that someone could slip Sampson a “cookie of forgetfulness”.

  49. Bluedog49 Says:

    Mike: “Get a grip.”

Tell us, Mike. When Repubs controlled the Senate, was there even one occasion when they honored this rule as the Dems are doing? I’ll save you the trouble of googling. The Repubs NEVER followed this rule. The rules are for the party which respects the law and our institutions, not current repubs.

  50. JRoyale Says:

This can be at best only a temporary move, the Republicans know that Sampson is going to be allowed/forced to finish testifying. So why did they do it?

Personally, I think the Republican leadership is in full panic mode and decided they needed to talk with Sampson in private to ask “WTF are you doing, lad?” and to probably apply a little pressure to keep his mouth shut and maybe even offer to help Sampson commit a little seppuku. (which is sorta like being a little pregnant). Too late, the trees in Aspen have already bloomed, or something like that.

  63. I WORFEUS Says:

If the republicans really wanted to shut down the hearings then they should have played the video of Karl Rove’s epileptic rap convulsions from last night.

Can’t hold hearings if the Congress is convulsing and flapping around on the floor in a pool of their own vomit.

  67. Jackie Rawlings Says:

Nice move to get to talk to Sampson so he wont out Karl Rove and Meirs.
If necessary it’s ok to out Gonzales but save the main people. Remember how this Administration works they told Sampson just what he told the FBI
shut up now or else. Everyone knows the move let’s see if it works for Karl, at least NBC David Gregory will spin this one in favor of his best friend Karl Rove. Once you have a once honest reporter in your back pocket it’s much easier to trick the public. Three cheers to David Gregory for making fools of all his loyal viewers.

  73. HeartlandLiberal Says:

It is obvious why Grassley needed a break. He and all the other Republicans needed a break to go to the rest room and change their drawers, which they were in the process of crapping beyond repair as the testimony unfolded, because they realize that, inescapably, we are veering every day closer and closer to impeachment and removal of the Bush/Cheney cabal of criminals, and hopefully concurrent trial and imprisonment of Karl Rove and all the other corrupt, unethical scum who have driven this nation to the brink of collapse.

If it was on purpose, then they need to get a beating to make them think twice before doing something so stupid again.

This is an example of an attack….Jake, you ignorant slut!
Pointing out your continuous hypocrisy is NOT a personal attack!

As for the dreaded ignore list. Is that what you call it when you’ve been proven wrong time and time again, and can’t reply?
In any case, with the limited times I post here now, to make the list is quite an honor! What do I win???

  102. oceanblues Says:

Oh, wait, torture is only important when it takes place in Gitmo.

    Comment by Dale — March 29, 2007 @ 3:44 pm

You pieces of sh!t opened the door to allow our soldiers and our allies soldiers to get torture you stupid fu*k. This is exactly why we have been screaming that it is a bad thing. But you ba$tards don’t listen to anything but talking points. Pull your head out of your a$$ Dale.

Then I opened your link and found it was from the right wing propaganda site Sky News. Wake the fu*k up Dale, you are being used.

  111. Dale Says:

#106, ah, it’s *our* fault the Iranians kidnapped 15 British sailors in Iraqi waters… I get it now. So *screw* ‘em, is that it?

What if you found out that Bush was responsible for putting the sailors there… THEN would I see some outrage?

  112. Ben B Says:

Um, one quick point to make is that it’s not clear whether the British sailors were taken in Iraqi or Iranian waters. The border between the two countries has not been settled. Furthermore, if you go pull up a map, the GPS coordinates are closer to Iranian land than to Iraqi land, so…

  113. Zooey Says:

    Dale,

This is a thread about the Cons shutting down the Sampson hearing. The ThinkFast thread is a great place for this info.

  114. pgw Says:

“And now Nancy Pelosi is refusing to allow a resolution condemning Iran for the kidnapping to come to the floor.”

but weren’t you saying last week that she was bought and paid for by aipac? aren’t the brits taking their case to the u.n? maybe you should let the brits know that you have a better idea.

  115. Jake Says:

P.S. to anyone (NOT on the “Ignore List”) who doesn’t understand my comments “For the record” above may appear to be prompted by idiotic comments from those on the “Ignore List” but in no shape or form are intended to be actual responses to said persons, real or fictional. We now return to your regularly scheduled pogrom.

  116. Raymond Funamoto Says:

Another Jake’Off session by the *pretend* Indy dum bass…

Stop leaving your Jake’Off crap in here - idiot. No one cares what you say, what you think, or what you believe. You’re just a useless piece of sh*t - idiot.

  118. cynical ex-hippie Says:

    Best line of the day:

“Does it apply to a Republican too?”

  119. Democrat Soldier Says:

#108 - “And now Nancy Pelosi is refusing to allow a resolution condemning Iran for the kidnapping to come to the floor.” Comment by Dale — March 29, 2007 @ 4:07 pm

Actually, I heard the Republicans refused to support the resolution. See how easy it is to make a “claim” with NO SUPPORTING EVIDENCE?

Dale truly is a neo-con. “No proof required for egregious assertions” is the neo-con typical tactic in their straw-man arguments.

  120. Al Says:

Jake, you suck. Add me to the list.

  121. gh0st Says:

I will go really slow so that Dale can keep up.

Where to start…ah, the concept of a “topic”. Now, I know that conservatives tend to think that flying off topic at any point to avoid facing an unpleasant fact is as it should be. The rest of the civilized world…wait, worded that wrong…we in the civilized world understand that for a meainingful conversation, one should stay on topic.

…and the topic of this thread is… (thank god this asynchronous communication and I don’t have to wait for that light bulb to limp on)

Second, “they are our allies”. Mmm-hmm. Yah. So, where are all your posts way back when saying, “The French and German governments are our allies” and making the point that we should be concerned about them, their interests and what-not.

Third, have to give you a “very nicely played.” I think the last two dozen posts were focused on your inanity and stupidity without one commenting on the topic at hand. I have no doubt you are a true blue conservative.

  122. mark johnson Says:

Due to a technical difficulty the Bush Administration has been forced to shut down all servers.
We hope this does not cause any inconvenience, and wonder why anyone would save any data about this topic.

  123. Poly Says:

Grassley isn’t really one of the bad guys. He’s one of the few Republicans who know the meaning of oversight, but he was swimming against the current until recently.

He testified in the House yesterday against political hack Lurita Doan - who facilitated using GSA for Republican partisan purposes. Isn’t often you see a Republican Senator TESTIFYING to a House commitee against a Republican appointee.

I think he really wanted these hearings to continue - he just expressed himself awkwardly.

  124. SouthernDragon Says:

Quit feeding the f’ing trolls. Sheesh.

  125. ez2speak2 Says:

OK you bunch of crooked Republicans…just slip the nooses on and jump.
America is served….After this, you’ll never see another republican in the White House…..Nixon should’ve been first. This would have never happened.

  126. Kirk Says:

Democrat Soldier: For your information: Nancy Pelosi supported a withdrawal date for our brave troops in Iran. That is tantamount to supporting the kidnapping of Italian troops in Iraq. These are facts. You can’t leave hyperlinks for every little detail. People kinda expect that you at least have some idea of what’s going on in the world. So, maybe you owe Dale an apology.

  127. angryvietnamvet Says:

Those who want to discuss the Brit prisoners should go to British boards and discuss it with their citizens…we have other fish to fry, thank you. Once again Jakoff has derailed the discussion.

  128. Kirk Says:

AngryVietnamVet: That’s a little like the pot calling the kettle macaca. We weren’t discussing a fish fry here, we were discussing Hillary Pelosi’s tendency to denigrate our troops by using the generals on the ground to close land deals off the white waters of the Persian gulf. Now you’ve angered me… and God.

  130. Kirk Says:

Sorry about the double post. It didn’t look like it took the first one, so I tried about a thousand more times. I’m very tenacious… and patriotic. Something you all should learn. Oh, also, you all should be more polite and respectful of other people’s ideas. Thank you in advance.

  131. CSPAN-Junkie Says:

Thank goodness for Oversight. Thank goodness for checks and balances. Thank goodness the nightmare of the last six years is coming to an end… Thank goodness for C-SPAN….and American democracy… A true patriot… Thank you all who value this great nation and what it stood for and will again once these hoodlums vacate and the house is fumigated of the likes of Rove, Chaney and Wbya…. Oh how the smelled the great house.
