Exclusive: Republican Delegation Currently Visiting Syria, Spared From White House Attacks

The White House today lashed out at Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) for daring to visit Syria in the coming days. White House spokesperson Dana Perino:

I do think that, as a general rule — and this would go for Speaker of the House Pelosi and this apparent trip that she is going to be taking — that we don’t think it’s a good idea. …

I’m not sure what the hopes are to — what she’s hoping to accomplish there. I know that Assad probably really wants people to come and have a photo opportunity and have tea with him, and have discussions about where they’re coming from, but we do think that’s a really bad idea.

Not only are the administration’s attacks on Pelosi hypocritical, but the timing suggests they are a partisan hit. ThinkProgress has learned that a delegation of Republicans is currently in Syria. (This has not been previously reported by the press.) Why did the White House wait until Pelosi’s imminent visit to raise this issue publicly, and not make mention of the Republicans already there?

Here’s what the White House isn’t talking about:

Republican Reps. Aderholt and Wolf are currently visiting Syria. According to a congressional official on Rep. Robert Aderholt’s (R-AL) staff, Aderholt and Rep. Frank Wolf (R-VA) are currently visiting Israel and Syria.

Republican Rep. Hobson accompanying Pelosi on Syria visit. Speaker Pelosi will be traveling with a contingent of members of Congress to Syria. The delegation includes Reps. David Hobson (R-OH), Keith Ellison (D-MN), Tom Lantos (D-CA), Henry Waxman (D-CA), Louise Slaughter (D-NY), Nick Rahall (D-WV).

Moreover, as the AP reports, “Earlier this month, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Ellen Sauerbrey held talks with a senior Syrian diplomat on how Damascus was coping with a flood of Iraqi refugees, the first such talks in the Syrian capital for more than two years.”

UPDATE: Bloomberg confirms our account:

Michael Lowry, a spokesman for Representative Robert Aderholt, said that the Alabama lawmaker will visit Syria as part of a Republican delegation led by Representative Frank Wolf, a Virginia Republican. Wolf is the top Republican on the House appropriations subcommittee that funds the State Department.

Perino wasn’t available to comment about that trip.

Clinton was the one who brought this whole mess upon us by not negotiating in the first place.

  2. veritas says:

SO IT’S OKAY FOR THE REPUKES BUT NOT FOR PELOSI….THIS ADMINISTRATION IS TOTALLY FULL OF CRAP AND HAS LOST THE RESPECT AND TRUST OF THE PEOPLE! The people will bring down the House of Bush because he’s showing himself to be a liar, a fraud, and a complete moron.

  3. Jake says:

And, in addition to the Clenis comment, Pelosi IS the Speaker of the House.

  4. veritas says:

hahahahahahah! Clinton is still President, eh? Could have fooled me!
Everyone would LOVE to have Clinton back, that’s for sure but most intelligent people are well grounded in reality so they do know what the date is, time is, and the President’s name. Guess that doesn’t go for some of our ignorant troll-pukes.

  7. veritas says:

TROLL PUKE DRIVEL ALERT!! FREEZE THE IGNORAMUS OUT!

  8. Jake says:

None of you can address the point of my post. What did Clinton do in the Middle East to avoid a situation like Iraq? We all know that the answer is nothing. Bush had no option but to invade thanks to Clinton’s incompetance.

I’m “dead” go back in my grave? It’s not even Halloween.

I’m just trying to present the alternitive point of view which you people can’t handle. You accuse me of not staying on point and just look at your posts. You just can’t handle that Clinton lied about Monica and he also fired attorneys for political reasons.

  25. Jake says:

You complain about Plame but what about this outing of two senators on a secret mission to Syria. TP should be ashamed of this behavior.

  27. Jake says:

    Uncle Ho:

That was the fake Jake. Maybe he will go away with the big FREEZE OUT?

  28. Jake says:

Yeah, that’s the answer. It wasn’t announced to the press for security reasons … until it was time for Pelosi to go. Fuck security now that Pelosi is going. We exposed Valerie Plame for partisan reasons and we can do the same with the speaker of the House. He he.

Are the Republicans undercover agents working on intelligence gathering for the security of the US? I doubt it if they are members of Congress.

    Have a word hey?

For that matter, was Clinton even alive when Eisenhower approved the overthrow of the Hashemite king in 1958 (he was)?

  39. Berken says:

What did Clinton do in the Middle East to avoid a situation like Iraq?

    He didn’t invade Iraq.

Simple answer to a simplistic question. Saddam did a great job of keeping terrorists out of Iraq. Which is why they all hung out in Afghanistan and kept their money in Saudi Arabia.

I read about Bush’s visit to Walter Reed and how he apologized for the bad treatment. I hope the injured soldiers that died accept that apology.
Maybe the injured soldiers who had open wounds bitten by mice/roaches/mold/maggots will accept that fake apology and of course the photo op. Next Bush will apologize for the illegal invasion of Iraq as it was for oil right only. Yes the dead soldiers and their family will be happy to accept the lam apology and the famous photo op. How does one apologize to dead people? Maybe Jake can answer that question?

    Hey Jake,
Your attempt to engage in a debate here isn’t working. We are not interested in what you have to say. You can keep up the “listen to me” stuff as long as you want. You can try to sound intelligent, but I think most of the folks here have figured out that you’re jackass hillbilly with the intellect of an avacado. You poor thing.

  56. Jake says:

    Comment by Jackie Rawlings

Actually, she is second in line after Cheney. And then Robert Byrd, who while several years older than God, is a major improvement over Ted Stevens, who was slotted into that role before January.

Pedantic, I know, but “in line” means you’re not actually in the top spot.

  58. Jake says:

A “jackass hillbilly with the intellect of an avacado”? That sounds like a personal attack to me . . .

How about this, Jake, you Bush cultist?

Scrap the Roosevelt Amendment. George W. mano-a-mano against Bill Clinton.

I have an active fantasy life, admittedly. But damn that would be fun to watch. Clinton STILL knows more policy detail than Bush, and the “debates” would be pay-per-view hits.

That would be funny. Bush could operate a fighter jet to save his life. All Clinton would have to do is show up with his brain. Does everything have to be about guns with you Bush lovers?

  74. ifthethunderdontgetya says:

There is no limit to this administration’s hypocrisy, just as there is no limit to the lying their remaining 30 percenters will happily regurgitate as gospel.

  75. VerbalKint says:

Jake’s whole schtick about wanting to debate is a joke. Judging from his behavior, Jake’s idea of debate is to repeat the same discredited talking points over and over, while ignoring all documentation that contradicts the party line. A good example is his insistence that it is somehow normal to fire a bunch of USAs in the middle of their terms for purely partisan political purposes, and that Clinton and Carter both did it. Jake must have posted a hundred comments repeating this one talking point alone, even though it is patently false. He continues to do so despite having it pointed out to him again and again (with supporting documentation) that it is false. Jake denies reality. It is pathological. Now I will grant that a deranged person might do this, but I find it far more likely that Jake is paid to do this as a Republican party operative.

  76. John O says:

Just for the record, I’ve never paid for a “pay per view” either. But that one I would surely consider.

  84. John O says:

Jake is sadly uneducated, or possibly stupid. Or both. Cut him some slack. After all, the Bush economy will provide a safety net for people floating in the turds that surround his boat.

Yo, Jake! What about it? A B. Clinton v. GW Bush election? Care to put your money where your mouth is? Or are you sweating what the outcome would be?

I have known loser, rich kid, frat boy sychophant (look it up, Jake) people my entire life. In general, we don’t want them running an elevator, much less a country.

    We don’t like you.

    You are a troll.

BTW: George W. Bush couldn’t carry William Jefferson Clinton’s jock strap. And Bush didn’t “have” to attack Iraq AT ALL. That’s why this war is criminal – it’s not just, and it was predicated on lies, to attain and end that will become more apparent with each and every hearing.

I’m guessing the Syrians don’t want to be responsible for anything bad happening to any visiting dignataries. Just a guess. Bad politics and all.

There’s this weird tendency in the Wingnuttosphere to believe that anyone who isn’t Christian and white is insane and not self-interested.

Which speaks to Jake’s IQ. Allegedly. IQ isn’t everything, after all.

Good Lord, Jake, can you at least stay on topic? Answer some of the questions that have been put to you?

  91. DBJ says:

    I still don’t understand it.

Leaving aside the whole partisan nature of this incident – I don’t get the whole schizophrenic thing we have going on with Syria.

According to the Right, they’re supporters of terrorists who we won’t talk to because they wouldn’t cooperate with us even if we wanted to talk – but then how is it that we send them terrorist suspects to torture (presumably they must be cooperating with us and giving information or we wouldn’t be sending the suspects over)?

It seems that this thing with Syria is really just Kabuki theater. When seen in that light it makes perfect sense that Perino could bash Pelosi while turning a blind eye to Republicans visiting there.

Not like the press is really going to point out the hypocrisy, since these days that is just business as usual.

  92. Continuum says:

    Yahhhh!!!!!!!

    Comment by VerbalKint — March 30, 2007 @ 8:42 pm

    I concur.

His vernacular is not that of a man who’s lived 3 quarters of a century.

In fact, its not even that of a man who’s lived 3 quarters of year.

That aside, I’m guessing Jake is somewhere in his late 20’s, early 30’s.

The reason he lies and tells us he’s 75 is because when he posted under one of his other handles (I-RIGHT-I) someone tore his ass up for being of military service age and yet not being willing to serve.

Also its helps deflect the insults about what a worthless pathetic loser he must be to sit home all day every day and try to derail someone elses blog.

So he lies and says he’s 75, hoping to disuade insults and increase respect for his idiotic ramblings and reich wing propaganda speeches.

If we start a pool I’ll take 32, overweight, moms basement, and better throw in currently undergoing psychological treatment at a major metropolitian hostpital.

  96. John O says:

LOL. My bad on the English.

Still, I think the point comes through.

Stay engaged, and try to let those pesky facts move your opinion at least a smidgen.

Not just you, Jake. I think the extreme left is as nutty (though not quite as dangerous) as the extreme right.

But you, Jake, could be the King of All Morons. At least so far as I can tell about your entire Self (which is admittedly little) from your posts here.

  109. I WORFEUS says:

These guys just have no tact. No diplomacy. Bush, Blair. All tough talk right out of the gate.

Look. A mature, reasonably educated person would say to Iran, “our information tells us that our sailors were in Iraqi waters, however we are not going to call quesiton your word, we simply ask that you as a gesture of friendship, overlook any trespass we may have made and return our citizens to us thus strengthening our countries friendship and cooperation”

Then offer them some money or something they want and move on.

We need to learn to work with these people, and is anyone in here prepared to say what these guys were doing patrolling so close to the perimeter of Iranian waters? Anyone prepared to say this wasn’t some pre-war covert operation or reconnaissance mission?

We don’t need cowboys at the helm when dealing with a proud and ancient race of people like those in the middle east.

We need diplomats. Ambassadors. People with tact and diplomacy.

Bush and Blair always have to start off every situation with the tough talk.

Remember the Auspry pilots that landed in China? China was going to release them as routine, until the Chinese Defense Minister heard George W Bush on CNN, demanding their immediate release and making threats.

The Defense Minister then ordered them to be held, and we went through that stand off.

Bush, Blair, the neocons, all START with the threats and the tough talk, and then end up having to back down and start negotiating, which of course means starting out from the weakest possible point.

You don’t start every international situation with threats and bravado. You start with respect and diplomacy.

You can always drop the hammer later, but if you start out with the hammer, you’ve got no where else to go but back.

    Jake, now your just being misleading;

    President Clinton, Syrian President Asad
Opening remarks at a news conference, Geneva, Switzerland, January 16, 1994
President Asad. At the conclusion of the important and constructive talks that were conducted today between President Clinton and myself, I wish to express my deep satisfaction for what these talks have effected in terms of U.S. determination to do all it can in order to bring the peace process to its desired objective–the objective of establishing a just and comprehensive peace in the region through the implementation of UN Security Council Resolutions 242, 338, and 425 as well as the principle of land for peace.

In this respect, I appreciate the fact that not withstanding the great importance that President Clinton attaches to the internal affairs of his country, he has attached a special importance as a full partner and honest intermediary to helping the parties reach a comprehensive peace that is in the interest not only of the peoples of the region, but also the people of the world at large.

[...] Certain folks on the left are screaming ‘hypocrisy’ over the administration’s focus on Pelosi’s trip and not the trip made by the House Republicans who have gone, too. And, as usual, they’ve gotten it wrong. There’s a reason that the administration is focusing on Pelosi’s trip, which I noted in a comment to this post at Hot Air, which I’m reposting here: [...]

[...] Talking To Syria: If anyone out there still buys the “We don’t talk to our enemies!” bullshit, just stop. Of course we do. Everyone does. Talking to your enemies is a necessary step in, you know, not being locked into a state of permanent warfare. The United States deals with Saudi Arabia, which is no worse than Syria. Hell, we once allied ourself with Stalin, choosing the slightly lesser of two terrible evils. We can talk to Syria. And if George Bush is too busy playing cowboy to do it, then I’m glad Nancy Pelosi is willing and able. Besides, it’s not like she’s the only one who has been talking to Syria lately. [...]

Comment on #1 – Jake, still blaming Clinton? Get over it, in case you haven’t heard, Clinton hasn’t been pres for 7 years.
Comment on # 8 – Jake, he (Clinton) avoided it by not attacking Iraq. Big duh!
Comment on # 132 – Valiant Venus, typical hypocritical drivvle from knee-jerk right (as if you had all the answers). What’s good for the goose is good for the gander, so get ‘goosed.’
This is my first time writing on this blog. All you (us) progressives don’t have to resort to name-calling to these ‘unenlightened’ right-wingers. Just use their words back on them, adding the facts. It’s that easy. They sink themselves! Thanks for the entertainment, righties

  188. bongo says:

It seems like Clinton just inherited Bush Sr’s mess. Bush Sr. supported Sadam against Iran, then didn’t and then didn’t finish the job with Desert Storm. Sadam went on to murder thousands. None of this has anything to do with Osam Bin Laden and 911 anyway. By now, everyone should have been able to read plenty of non-partisan press and listen to enough Middle East scholars to know that Bin Laden and Sadam were enemies. There’s no reason to call anyone names because most of us were ignorant about the complexities of the Middle East. None of us should have that excuse any longer. It’s causing too many Americans and Iraqis their lives.
