Ex-aide turns on Bush.

By Nico Pitney on Mar 31st, 2007 at 5:21 pm

Ex-aide turns on Bush.

President Bush’s former top aide and pollster Matthew Dowd comes clean:

In a wide-ranging interview here, Mr. Dowd called for a withdrawal from Iraq and expressed his disappointment in Mr. Bush’s leadership.

He criticized the president as failing to call the nation to a shared sense of sacrifice at a time of war, failing to reach across the political divide to build consensus and ignoring the will of the people on Iraq. He said he believed the president had not moved aggressively enough to hold anyone accountable for the abuses at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, and that Mr. Bush still approached governing with a “my way or the highway” mentality reinforced by a shrinking circle of trusted aides. …

In speaking out, Mr. Dowd became the first member of Mr. Bush’s inner circle to break so publicly with him.

He said his decision to step forward had not come easily. But, he said, his disappointment in Mr. Bush’s presidency is so great that he feels a sense of duty to go public given his role in helping Mr. Bush gain and keep power.

The source said the U.S. had already compiled a list of possible targets on Iranian territory and practiced the operation during recent exercises in the Persian Gulf.

Poor Dowd; the only real way for him to atone is to call for Bush’s impeachment, but he’s not there yet, psychologically speaking. He’s feeling the same as most republicans: used. Too bad their support for Bush has been squandered, much as their ideology.

If they ever want to be taken seriously again, conservatives must make a sacrifice. To restore integrity to the conservative movement, they, not the democrats, must impeach Bush. If conservatives really want to repudiate the disgusting behavior of the past six years, it’s quite simple: bring us the head of George Bush. Then we’ll talk of bipartisanship.

Because of the Bush administration hundreds of thousands of people have died, the American system of justice is a joke, respect for the rule of law has been denigrated, we have witnessed horrible cases of obscene and inhumane treatment of prisoners, basic tenets of common law have been abrogated, troops have been sent into battle without adequate equipment, and wounded veterans have been treated with disrespect and indifference. It’s pointless for Dowd to speak up now of his “disappointment.”

The “feeding frenzy” is in progress and the GOP is eating it’s own which is heartening to behold. In this case, the incredible corruption from the top on down is mind-boggling and it’s any wonder why any honest, moral individual would NOT be jumping ship at this point. Whether Republican or Democrat, Truth is Truth and, frankly, Truth is THE ONLY thing which exists. The bastardization of Truth is purely “fiction”. We’ve had enough fiction to last us a lifetime at this point. This is a very healthy sign for this democracy to see staunch “Bushies” finally seeing the light and realizing that they’ve all been HAD by a pro.

  34. veritas says:

And, from the horrendous way Bush looked at his photo-op at Reed, I’d put my bets that he’s crumbling before our very eyes. That’s what a lifetime of corruption, lies, and degenerative choices will do to an individual.

    Why should we?

    Comment by Massachusetts — March 31, 2007 @ 8:13 pm

    Simple.

Because if we don’t, then it doesn’t exactly encourage people to switch sides, does it?

I mean, if they know you’re going to crucify them whether they’re for or against Bush, then what motive does it give them to want to speak out against Bush and for the Democrats?

While it may feel good to damn them all to hell for time and all eternity, we are living in a real world, with a real society, and members of that society are going to make wrong choices. We need to accept and welcome those from the right wing who decide to switch sides. Many of them can become our strongest voices to sway the masses. Look at what a powerhouse for reason Andrew Sullivan has become. Chris Matthews, Joe Scarborough, all Bush fans who flew the coop once they saw Bush for what he was.

I’m not saying vote for them or something. Hilary, John Edwards, any of them who voted for the war or supported it early on, have shown they do no have the moral compass or judgement to make the right decisions when the balls in their court. So we don’t vote for them for President or something, but we don’t condemn them either when they say the right things, like “I’m sorry I voted for the war”. We should encourage it.

If we are going to pummel them when they tell us they’ve switched, then we’re going to get less converts.

  102. veritas says:

Just as Bush has done all this damage by himself, so now his damage to himself is becoming evident. His corrupt little white house of horrors is being “outed” left and right….day after ugly day…and it’s showing just how unqualified, incompetent, and pathological he really is. He’s surrounded himself with “yes men” and “fall guys” and now the people are finally getting to see that he is, after all, just the very little man behind the curtain at Oz….it isn’t a very flattering or pretty sight!

  103. Zooey says:

    Comment by Zep Tepi

  104. veritas says:

Agreed….those who voted “for” the war by enabling this mass genocide of our military & the Iraqis (Clinton, Edward, Biden, McCain, Lieberman) definitely should not be “celebrated” by our vote in 08. This was the largest error in judgment anyone could make in their lifetime and these people need to be shown by the people that they hold them personally responsible for all that’s gone wrong with this country. To vote for them at this point when we are aware of their flawed judgment is asking for more of the same.

Clearly, no one who voted for this war should be “rewarded” by one single vote in 08 – and that goes without exception – and on both sides of the aisle.

Actually, I’ll let you, and the select few who are reading this, in on a little secret: I chose this name, because I’ve always dug the movie “Barfly,” not because I am a barfly. The grittiness of the performances have always stuck with me, and they resonate at odd times. As when George Bush was reelected, the first thing that came to mind was the movie’s line: “Bad luck, by the fucking bucket!” said just as the character is pulling a knife from his ribcage.

Naw your not a bummer. We are basically wanting the same thing and for our government to regain it’s lost virtue. America was once a Just country to serve Justice and to live and let live. Not to war for resources and business interests, not to torture, or occupy, or force democracy at the end of a barrel.

plant root crops and do chores after monday untill new moon on 17th (”dark of the moon” or shrinking), then time again for above ground crops and plants (”light of the moon”)…

    Comment by dlet

They don’t think objectively. These are people who have been conditioned to think ideologically, not objectively. It is a direct result of the psycho-religious propaganda they have been conditioned to believe. Essentially, they are equipped with a nearly perfect filtration apparatus which is impermeable to facts which do not match their ideological imprint. Those facts which do break through the membrane are automatically twisted to fit. Look at the behavior of this Jake — his nonsensical commentary is virtually automatic, essentially effortless on his part. With these people, there is no felt need to investigate and analyze — the conclusion is self-evident to them ,even though the conclusions obviously conflict with reality to any external observer. Sadly, this is not an isolated problem today. It is very wide-spread indeed due to the nature of the western educational process.

Given all that, the question arises as to whether the Progressive Movement should start taking steps to manipulate this reality. I’m not sure that can happen to the degree to which it occurred with the zio-cons. It takes a certain degree of moral turpitude to operate on that basis. However, I do notice that Hillary is trying to capitalize on the Al Qaeda myth. To say the least, it is an interesting exercise to view the American landscape in light of this web of public mythology — perpetrators, victims and exploiters and nothing is what it seems.

Plus, active volcanos, glaciers, sub-tropical rainforests, a gazillion miles of coastline and they’re in the southern hemisphere, 1,200 miles from their nearest neighbor. But isn’t the world going to be a better place because of actions like or similar to Iran’s????

    QUESTION: Thank you very much.

Mr. President, critics of your proposed bill on interrogation rules say there’s another important test. These critics include John McCain, who you’ve mentioned several times this morning.

And that test is this: If a CIA officer, paramilitary or special operations soldier from the United States were captured in Iran or
North Korea and they were roughed up and those governments said, “Well, they were interrogated in accordance with our interpretation of the Geneva Conventions,” and then they were put on trial and they were convicted based on secret evidence that they were not able to see, how would you react to that as commander in chief?

BUSH: My reaction is, is that if the nations such as those you name adopted the standards within the Detainee Detention Act, the world would be better. That’s my reaction.

You certainly aren’t 75 and you would seem to me ineffective.

I have given you many clues yet you still do not realize what I say. Your words here have no effect as your thoughts have no effect.

The question then is why does Jake, who posts so much and think so much, have no true effect?

Can you yet divorce yourself from what you think as to that what truly is?

Only then, with a balanced mind, will you have any effect, and when you do have effect it will be for progress of mankind and not for war.

    Do you understand?

YOU cannot have an effect until you think in rational, not biased and not materialistically, terms.

Can you comprehend such simple things?

#111 Massachusetts – NZ is a wonderful place.
Just last week NZs PM Helen Clark was in Washington to see Bush, Rice and so on.
One of the discussions was about a Free Trade Agreement between New Zealand (pop. 4m) and the US (pop. 300m).
This idea was basically laughed at by Bushco as they consider NZ “a close friend, but not an ally”.
This is due to New Zealand’s “No Nukes In Our Waters” policy – meaning no nuclear power ships/subs and so on.
This impacts on the Navy using NZ ports as they won’t tell the NZ government if certain ships do or do not have nukes on board.
This policy has been in place since the mid 80s.
NZ is not part of the war in Iraq, but has sent a small contingent of troops to Afganistan.
It’s quite a liberal place – they even had the world’s first transsexual MP.

This gives rise to the question as to whether the Progressive Movement should be taking more aggressive steps to manipulate this reality.

    Comment by stonehinge — March 31, 2007 @ 10:56 pm

Who’s to say some in the Progressive Movement aren’t taking agressive steps to manipulate this reality?

Beginning with the fall equinox, I have been praying that those who know of wrongdoing come forward with testimony and evidence. Others have joined my prayer. How many revelations have there been since the middle of last September? There was enough from out of the blue, so to speak, to affect the November elections, wasn’t there? And just as the hours of daylight are increasing, so to is light being shown through the darkness that has enshrouded this Administration.

And so I continue to pray, may those who know of wrongdoing in this administration continue to come forward with testimony and evidence.

  187. Briseadh na Faire says:

    Meanwhile, back at the seige/surge…

“President Bush and Iranian President Ahmadinejad on Saturday ramped up the rhetoric over British sailors and marines held by Iran. Bush called them “hostages” and said Iran’s actions were “inexcusable.” “

Right. Hey, Bush, can you spell Guantanamo? I didn’t think so. How many “hostages” are you holding there? How are you treating your “hostages?”

  188. Martin Gifford says:

Dowd: “I think we should design campaigns that appeal not to 51 percent of the people, but bring the country together as a whole.”

From divide and conquer to togetherness. Better late than never.

Here’s the campaign for you Matthew Dowd: http://www.worldwidehappiness.org

Email me, Matthew. I’ll be waiting with bated breath.

    Martin Gifford.

Does it seem to anybody else that those sailors had been sent out there like bait to lure the Iranians into capturing them. Either that or it is just convenient timing to give Bush the excuse he’s going to use to justify the next action he takes. Of course another leader might try diplomacy but not Georgie.

  194. stonehinge says:

Well, Briseadh, I look at your manipulation as an interaction on the positive side, for such prayers do have a measurable impact within the noosphere. However, when Democrats starts talking about Al Qaeda in Iraq, that is playing into the dark side of public myth.

We have a lot of these public myths to deal with.

I’m just now coming to understand that we have just a tiny bit of a window to choose how to manage these myths. I feel as though I have been living under a shroud of darkness for 20 years, forced to speak a language that had no basis in reality, but that is changing due to your prayers and the prayers of others.

My question is this — assume that your prayers are being answered, how you would choose to reconfigure the dialectic? Please don’t feel any need to answer that question here and now. I’m putting it out there as one of those questions we need to live, in the sense that Rilke taught:

Be patient with all that is unresolved in your heart,
And try to love the questions themselves.
Do not seek for the answers that cannot be given,
For you would not be able to live with them.
And the point is to live everything.
    Live the question now,
    And perhaps, without knowing it,
You will live someday into the answers.

  195. shane says:

The fact that Dowd has jumped ship doesn’t mean much because he’s still a rat. The important issue it seems is that he wasn’t too scared to jump.

Whatever Rove or the other Bushies have been doing to maintain loyalty amongst them has all of a sudden lost its potency. Really either I missed it or there have been very few cases of anybody turning on them.

Hopefully this is only the beginning of the web of deception unraveling.

It sure looks like it was deliberate. This all went down right after the the language was removed from the funding bill which would have forced Bush/Cheney to seek approval for an Iranian invasion.

Pelosi has said it would be brought up in a stand-alone bill. Webb has one ready to go on the Senate side, but it’s not in the pipeline as far as I know. Justin Raimondo takes it to be a green light.

The problem we have is that it may be too late to stop now. The next two weeks are going to be touch-n-go in my opinion. I wish the Iranians would simply return the sailors, it might force the delay that we need. If that doesn’t happen, I think we can pretty well take the Iranian position as “bring it on, a$$____, we’re tired of this cat-n-mouse game.” Both sides will take huge losses.

#198 I really don’t think it was a deliberate act by the British.

    British Version
1 Crew boards merchant ship 1.7NM inside Iraqi waters
2 HMS Cornwall was south-east of this, and inside Iraqi waters
3 Iran tells UK that merchant ship was at a different point, still within Iraqi waters
4 After UK points this out, Iran provides alternative position, now within Iranian waters

    Iranian Version
1 Royal Navy crew stray 0.5km inside Iranian waters
2 Iran gives set of co-ordinates to back up their claims
3 According to seized GPS equipment, the Royal Navy crew had previously entered Iranian waters at several other points
4 Iran informs Britain of the position where the crew were seized, inside Iranian waters

Iranian Colonel Setareh, commander of Arvand Coastguard Base:
“Bearing in mind that British naval boats had previously violated Iranian waters in 2004 and had given commitment in the same year not to repeat this again, they have been handed over to relevant officials for further investigation and the issue is being studied.”

Exactly. I do not defend any military actions against any country, but what surprises me is the hypocresy that Blair and Bush have exercised in this particular event. What about Abu Ghraib? What about Fallujah, Qana and Haditha where CIVILIANS were slaughtered in another war crime that will go unpunish becuz the UN is as tough as US decides.

    BALANCE

What is making news right now is the darkness of man-unkind. Yet there are others, moving in the opposite direction, even as we speak…towards the light. And some of us must be willing to walk both paths to bring balance back, for it is for the darkness to bring destruction and decay, and they have not finished their path yet. They have perverted spirituality through religion for the sake of power. Yet their power is illusory. Breathe away your fears and no one has power over you any longer.

    Peace and Blessings.

Yes, Juan, you are correct. Even though I am now disabled, having once seen the moon shining on a still lake, it is impossible to forget that sense of poise and balance. But, I surely didn’t realize it was so obvious even now.

Why doesn’t he go talk to GPN … Government Propaganda News, aka MSM, or the news stations that no one cares about anymore since all they do is report LIES just like the LYING bush administration.

Blog definitely have killed the MSM, but it would be nice if this bozo Dowd talked about how the TV stations are reporting LIES just like “his” bush.

He’s going down with the GOP ship no matter what cuz blood is on his hands.

And many people have died for bush and Dowd’s LIES.

    Shame on him!

‘US ready to strike Iran on Good Friday’

The United States will be ready to launch a missile attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities as soon as early this month, perhaps “from 4 a.m. until 4 p.m. on April 6,” according to reports in the Russian media on Saturday.

According to Russian intelligence sources, the reports said, the US has devised a plan to attack several targets in Iran, and an assault could be carried out by launching missiles from fighter jets and warships stationed in the Persian Gulf.

Russian news agency RIA Novosti quoted a security official as saying, “Russian intelligence has information that the US Armed Forces stationed in the Persian Gulf have nearly completed preparations for a missile strike against Iranian territory.”

  215. doro says:

Tobey, they wont. I’m pretty sure about that. They would like to, but they won’t. That would be like a political suicide bombing. There is no way the GOP can survive such a stupidity. I’m sure they won’t let the boy king do it.

  216. Michael C says:

We have heard Harriet Miers and now Matthew Dowd declare their love for George, Condi has always been enamoured, Karen Hughes finds him huge, and even Monica Goodling is willing to burn at the stake for him.

Ex-gay marines and male hookers find the pickings easy at GOP job fairs. Mainstream boy stenographers adore his calling them demeaning nicknames. The German public loved Adolph with rhapsodic frenzy as well.

Barbara and Laura and Dad and the wacko macho 30% can’t admit he’s a dismal fake, failure and jerk.

    So here’s to father-longings and right-wing man-loving idolatry, fascism’s not so secret aphrodisiac, and America’s neo-con Fuhrer.

Short, stupid and venal as pious George may be, he looks great in an aviator’s suit.

  217. David H says:

Not an original thought, I’m sure, but Dowd appears to be your typical rat leaving a sinking ship. Look at his career. Becomes a Republican when Bush looks liike a good thing; now that Democrats have the Big Mo he decides that Obama is attractive. Give me a break!

Don’t let this guy off the hook. He played a big part in putting Bush in power and selling Iraq. Let him roast with the rest of them.
