Romney and Giuliani

By Nico Pitney on Apr 1st, 2007 at 11:35 am

Romney and Giuliani

open to imprisoning Americans without review. Glenn Greenwald comments on excerpts from a National Review article:

Crane asked if Romney believed the president should have the authority to arrest U.S. citizens with no review. Romney said he would want to hear the pros and cons from smart lawyers before he made up his mind.

Mitt Romney can’t say — at least not until he engages in a careful and solemn debate with a team of “smart lawyers” — whether, in the United States of America, the President has the power to imprison American citizens without any opportunity for review of any kind. … Ponnuru goes on to note:

Crane said that he had asked Giuliani the same question a few weeks ago. The mayor said that he would want to use this authority infrequently.

It sounds like Giuliani is positioning himself in this race as the “compassionate authoritarian” — “Yes, of course I have the power to imprison you without charges or review of any kind, but as President, I commit to you that I intend (no promises) to ‘use this authority infrequently.’”

Greenwald has much more.

    my apologies!
but im glad you linked to Greenwald!

I hope that the Democrats have tapes of both these men saying what they did and that they use those tapes as a political commercial. These people are very scary and the US public needs to know how scary they are. I would also like to hear McCain’s answer to that question, but I’m willing to bet the farm that I know his answer. It would be “what ever it takes to win the war on terror so that they won’t follow us home and blow us up”.

  4. Jim Source says:

Funny how these guys are so quick to swear to uphold the constitution, when they apparently have no idea what it says, and no regard for the millions of Americans who have sacrificed their lives over the past 200 years to safeguard it. Does anybody in the GOP actually believe in anything anymore, or are they just addicted to power?

  5. Briseadh_na_faire says:

Now, put this together with Federal prosecutors who are appointed because they are “loyal Bushies” and who only go after political opponents.

Hacker bob, your brothers and sisters in arms are getting shot and blown to bits so that Bush and the Republican Party can create a totalitarian state.

  6. Zooey says:

Romney & Giuliani are telling us who they are — we must listen and believe them.

    Fair warning….

If either of these authoritarian creeps manage to cheat their way into the presidency, I’m going expat the next day. Cuz, the USA will officially be DOA.

  8. freeman says:

Compassionate authoritarianism , an idea whose time has come ?
.What with a company like Black Water receiving billions of dollars from the federal government ( and being represented by ken star and the presidents general counsel Fred Fielding ) wanting to branch out into intelligence gathering ,we already have the makings for an American Gestapo.
I don’t know ,but having a private army with a budget of billions operating out of Virginia doesn’t sound like a very healthy idea for democracy in America !
But where is the outrage among the democrats ?What does it take for impeachment ?What happened to my country ?……HELP ….

Big mistake. What comes around goes around… guaranteed.

  10. shane says:

Do the Republcans have a different Constitution than the rest of us.

Warrantless wire taps and arresting with “no review”. What does “no review” even mean. But he has to ask some smart attorneys. Who’s going to find these smart attorneys, Gonzales, Sampson, Rove?

My bags are packed, I’m ready to go ….

I grew up ultra right wing republican… they dont put much weight onto the U.S. Constitution… their loyalty lays only with their 1800s interpretation of the bible (especially the old testament).

  28. Zippy says:

Marc Rich was doing business with the Iranians who held Americans
hostage in 1980. He fled the country when he was indicted in 1983.
(Why would he flee if he was innocent?) Bill Clinton pardoned him in
the last 15 minutes of his presidency, in the middle of the night. Guess who
was the US Attorney who indicted Marc Rich in 1983? It’s gonna be a great
    campaign.

  29. WC says:

I believe this is exactly what Bush (and/or the major players in his administration) had in mind from the very beginning: creating unlimited power for the President and then passing it along to other Repubs down the line. I believe the Repubs will do whatever they can to get another one of their own in the WH in 2008.

But it will be up to the Dems in Congress to put a stop to it, if they have the balls. That, and if they can hold on to the majority for years to come.

I remember reading an article in USA Today back when Bush was pushing Social Security reform. It said that it wasn’t just a short-term goal to fix the SS “problem.” The Republicans wanted to solidify their control in government for generations to come by showing the public that they had a winning plan for SS reform, and paint the Democrats as wanting to stick with the same old SS program, convincing the public that the Dems didn’t have any new ideas and couldn’t move the country forward, and thus didn’t need to be in the majority in Congress.

With the Dems in control of Congress now, SS reform is definitely dead. So the Repubs used the “war” on terror to give themselves control in another way.

  30. JPark says:

So, Zippy, a mayor threw a head of state out of the country? Are you retarded?

  32. Zippy says:

He absolutely did, check your facts. From Wikipedia:

In 1995, Giuliani made national headlines by ordering PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat ejected from a Lincoln Center concert held in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations after Arafat showed up to the event uninvited. “Maybe we should wake people up to the way this terrorist is being romanticized”, Giuliani said, and noted that Arafat had been implicated in the murder of American civilians and diplomatic personnel.[55]

How’s this gonna look in nice commercial, maybe use it as a voiceover while the picture shows Hillary hugging Arafat? Gonna be a wonderful campaign.

  33. steve says:

Infrequently: Is that related to frequently as inflammable is to flammable?

  34. Kate Henry says:

“Giuliani made national headlines by ordering PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat ejected from a Lincoln Center concert “….

And this translates to throwing him out of the country how? The Lincoln Center us the United States of America????

Hey Zippy the pinhead, how about some pictures of George Bush holding hands with and kissing his Arab friend? You know, the people who funded Al Queda?

  35. Zippo says:

HIllary Clinton hugging Arafat and Giuliani voiceover saying
“We have to wake people up to how this terrorist is being romanticized”
is going to be a great campaign commercial.

Marc Rich did business with Iran against President Carter’s injunction.
Giuliani indicted Marc Rich in 1983. Marc Rich fled the country (why would he do that if he were innocent?) Bill Clinton pardoned Marc Rich in the middle of the night on the last day of his presidency. This is going to\be a fun campaign.

  36. joshdestardi says:

so zippy…are you implying that hillary clinton, an American mother, who has a great stake in the future of this country is a terrorist?

Are you suggesting that the 65% of Americans who are disliking George Dumbya day by day, are terrorists?

    Are you stupid?

The only thing worse than criminals, are people who support criminals’ all for an ideology. You need to wake up…but alas, these words are wasted on someone who just doesn’t get it. Nice job on the attempt to hand our ports over to the United Arab Emirates…jus sayin

  37. Zippo says:

When the debates turn to terrorism and one of the most successful prosecutors in the history of the human race debates Hillary on strategies to capture Bin Laden…won’t that be an interesting debate? When Giuliani outlines how he nailed some of the most wanted people (according to the FBI) in history like Carmine Persico and Fat Tony Salerno, and how he intends to employ some of these same methods to break Al qaeda, what is Hillary going to talk about?

  38. Zippo says:

This will be another fun area of debate when Giuliani debated Hillary:

    Marc Rich, Pincus Green case
It was in 1983 that Giuliani indicted financiers Marc Rich and Pincus Green on charges of tax evasion and making illegal oil deals with Iran during the hostage crisis, in one of the first cases in which the RICO Act was employed in a non-organized crime case.[17] Rich and Green fled the United States to avoid prosecution; both were eventually pardoned by President Bill Clinton in 2001.[18

How in the world is Hillary going to survive when Giuliani unloads this on her?
