This morning on The Imus Show, NBC Iraq correspondent Tom Aspell followed-up on his report from last night that Sen. John McCain was accompanied by 100 American soldiers, 3 Blackhawk helicopters, and 2 Apache gunships on his stroll through a Baghdad market.
Aspell said that, with a similar level of protection, “even Paris Hilton could ride a bicycle in a bikini through Anbar province.”
Aspell observed, “It looked as though the whole trip had been arranged by someone to get rid of the negative publicity about [McCain’s] remarks in the States earlier in the week. It seemed as though he’d come to Baghdad, made a point of going to a market, staging this kind of visit to the market, and it just seemed to backfire.” He remarked that this weekend’s deadly violence in Iraq “made the trip look rather foolish.” Watch it:

This administration is in its last throes.
April 2nd, 2007 at 11:12 amNOW, you Mother F’ers tell us! This is obviously some liberal media attempt to hide these important facts to either:
a) make a fool out of George W. Bush
or 2) wait it out so the Dems can make a White House comeback in ‘08.
April 2nd, 2007 at 11:12 am“Backfire” as in McCain was NOT able to walk down the marketplace? I’d bet he did not want to wear that bulletproof vest either.
April 2nd, 2007 at 11:13 ami was curious how long planned this trip had been. my suspicions have been confirmed…
john mccain sinks ever lower into a sludge of lies to and contempt for the american people. what a vile, contemptible man — along with his own personal poodle — lindsey graham.

I love that kind of snark from reporters — especially when it’s true.
April 2nd, 2007 at 11:20 amYeeeh, Aspell never struck me as a comedian but maybe he ought to start doing two shows nightly.
April 2nd, 2007 at 11:21 amDid Aspell happen to mention where one can buy 5 rugs for $5?
April 2nd, 2007 at 11:22 amI hate America, which is why I support invading and occupying countries which are not hotbeds of Islamic extremist terror, and oppose going after bin Laden.
I hate America, which is why I agree with bin Laden that American liberals, with their feminism, cultural diversity, and tolerance for differences, should be subjected to sharia law, or its American equivalent.
I will work tirelessly to achieve these goals.
April 2nd, 2007 at 11:23 amnah… these kinds of things NEVER happen… and certainly not from a SENATOR… they are elected in the first place because of their unimpeachable high integrity… right…? RIGHT…??

Comeback? You mean like we took over in 06, and we’ll OWN DC in 08.. You might as well move to Iraq!
April 2nd, 2007 at 11:25 amWorse news for McCain: Mitt Romney raised $23 million, almost as much as Hillary Clinton!

We can’t have Americans thinking that the war might be turning in the right direction now, can we?
April 2nd, 2007 at 11:27 amThank you, Sen. McCain, for completely destroying your own argument.
Why do I get the feeling that he doesn’t want people to believe a single word he says ever again?

McCain & Graham are devout Bushlickers. Anything quoted about this trip should be put in the perspective that this about trying to sway public opinion about the invasion; not of how things ‘really are’.
April 2nd, 2007 at 11:49 amAs has been stated on other boards, what was the cost of this little shopping trip? Fiscally conservative repugs should be howling at this just for the exorbitant waste of military resources. Of course the cost of this trip could be why Bush says the military will run out of money in April rather than July.
April 2nd, 2007 at 11:49 amMEANWHILE…the Tal Afar truck bombing set an Iraqi War record for most people killed - 152 so far. We all remember Tal Afar’s significance, yes? Take a hike there, Johnny Mc.
April 2nd, 2007 at 11:50 amThere were also 6 US soldiers killed SW of Baghdad. Could it be that the security detail that was needed for McCain’s and Graham’s shopping spree would have normally gone to those 6 soldiers?
April 2nd, 2007 at 11:52 amTaliban will turn Afghanistan into a graveyard for Americans
the taliban obviously got numberless suiciders.
“We´ve sent thousands into the cities to attack the westeners and their Afghan puppets,” Taliban leader Mullah Dadullah threatened.
The Taliban would turn Afghanistan into a graveyard for American soldiers. The Islamic guerilla-group was equipped and sufficiently armed to fight enemy forces for a longer period of time Dadullah deplored further. After heavy losses in open battle the Taliban turn back to guerilla tactics more often. Since 2006 the number of victims has risen dramitically since 2006 thru suiciders according to the Iraqi example to 4000, 170 western soldiers among them. Just on sunday a convoy was attacked in province Laghman. Nine civilians died, among them also children.
The Taliban are primarily active in the east and south, close to the border of Pakistan. According to the Afghan government the leader of the Taliban, Mullah Omar, is currently in Pakistan. Dadullah denies it. Omar and the leaders of the Taliban were on Afghan ground.

April 2nd, 2007 at 11:53 amI find it ironic that the Republican bragging points McCain is making in trying to cover over his support for Bush’s War, is the fact that after 4 years of warfare he can be driven the eight miles from the Baghdad Airport to the Green Zone.
By that measure of success, in another 4 years, he will be bragging that he did it without wearing a flack jacket and with the windows rolled down in his armored humvee.
What do you bet that on this trip, McCain will be FLYING back to the airport in a blackhawk, rather than risk getting his ass shot off in a humvee to prove a point?

You think it don’t you. Obviously there are plenty of news stories out there reinforcing your belief that we did the right thing starting and then continuing this war. Why when the war is progressing with all the extra soldiers he asked for are you still whining and complaining.
Do you really think McCain went to Iraq and walked around the market because he didn’t want the publicity? And if the whole trip had been ignored would that have been our fault too?

I’m just thinking, but perhaps the Administration could get McCain to take a camel ride along the Afgan-Pakistani border to try and make a lie out of that bit of news, too. Perhaps visit a local market that used to be a former Taliban stronghold but now full of harmless goat herders.

April 2nd, 2007 at 12:11 pm“I bought five rugs for five bucks.” (Sen. Lindsey Graham in Baghdad)
Monday 2nd of April 2007
by Jay Randal
At a news conference, yesterday in Iraq, Sen. Graham and Sen. McCain told the press about their trip to the Bab al-Sharqi market in old Baghdad. “We went to the market and were just really warmly welcomed. I bought five rugs for five bucks. And people were engaging.” Said Sen. Graham with Sen. McCain grinning next to him. Sen. McCain later went on a photo-op stroll on street in Baghdad, but he wore a flak-vest and 100 soldiers guarding him, with helicopter gunships overhead too.
Both of them claim that Iraq is improving in security, but McCain needing massive protection to walk 5 minutes down a street in Baghdad proves otherwise.
Their Bush Regime approved trip to Iraq has cost US taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars, for them, to purchase five cheap Iraqi prayer rugs for five bucks.
Both Sen. Lindsey Graham and Sen. John McCain for doing this stunt should resign from Senate in disgrace and the Congress must force them to pay for the trip.
( Jay Randal, political activist and writer in Georgia, USA.)
PS: Contact Sen. Graham and Sen. McCain in DC to resign!
April 2nd, 2007 at 12:16 pmMcCain walking through the streets of Baghdad wearing a flak jacket and Hilton riding through on a motorcycle wearing a bikini are not really that different. Both are a couple of publicity whores who would do anything for a party. Both make me ready to barf when their faces appear on TV.

Well he can use his campaign money to reimburse you.
And I’m dead serious, what funding for that trip? Where came the money from? Was it supposed to be spent on a trip for republicans only. Or came it out of the Senate budget and if so, shouldn’t there be some Democrats there also?
I don’t know about it, but given the history of the republicans of disappropriating funds for their own means, I wouldn’t stop asking until I knew the facts.
