It’s easy to get the poll results you want

when you ask loaded questions. TPM Election Central looks at the latest Fox News poll, which manages to elicit “the exact opposite findings of other, more reputable polls on questions involving the Attorney Purge and the Iraq War.”

UPDATE: MyDD has more analysis and Crooks and Liars has the video of the poll being discussed on Countdown with Keith Olbermann.

Good point since I would go crazy watching Fox for :30 how would I ever answer their poll. Actually it should be embarrassing to Fox and its viewers to get results so different than the rest of the country.

Poll question: Whom do you trust more to conduct a meaningful poll — a reputable polling firm with a sound methodology, no axes to grind, and questions that are not intended to elicit a predictable response, or a fake news organization run by the Republican party and surgically attached to the president’s rear end?

    Take your time answering.

    This is my favorite question:

    36. After the 2004 presidential election, the president of the left-wing Moveon.org political action committee made the following comment about the Democratic Party, “In the last year, grassroots contributors like us gave more than $300 million to the Kerry campaign and the DNC, and proved that the Party doesn’t need corporate cash to be competitive. Now it’s our Party: we bought it, we own it and we’re going to take it back.” Do you think the Democratic Party should allow a grassroots organization like Moveon.org to take it over or should it resist this type of takeover?

    Too precious….

Here’s a loaded question I wish somebody would ask Fux Snooze:

“Since the Dems won back a majority in both the House and the Senate last November, has the situation in Iraq noticeably improved?”

“Yes” would indicate that the Dems have helped improve Iraq

    and

“No” would be admitting that even with the escalation, the situation remains the same (un-winnable, just ask Kissinger).

Oh, you could spin a ‘no’ vote and blame the Dems, but the facts say otherwise since any/all anti-Iraq legislation has yet to be passed.

Wingnuts lose no matter how they would answer.

    40. Last week the U.S. House voted to remove U.S. troops from Iraq by no later than September 2008 — would you describe this as a correct and good decision or a dangerous and bad decision?

    Correct and good – 44%
    Dangerous and bad – 45%

So with more Dems as Republicans responding, the correct-vs-dangerous is pretty evenly split.

Democrats vs America – War on Terror

A friend shared the following info:

Here are results from two polls released this evening that I can pretty much guarantee will not be reported by any mainstream media news organization:

First, from the FNC/Opinion Dynamics poll, respondents were asked:

    Read on . . .

Who do you trust more to decide when US troops should leave Iraq — US military commanders or members of Congress?

    Military Commanders 59%
    Members of Congress 18%

The breakdown by party affiliation is most revealing:

    Democrats
    Military Commanders 52%
    Members of Congress 30%

    Republicans
    Military Commanders 88%
    Members of Congress 7%

    Independents
    Military Commanders 69%
    Members of Congress 15%

In another question, respondents to the poll were asked…

Last week the U.S. House voted to remove U.S. troops from Iraq by no later than September 2008 — Would you describe this as a correct and good decision or a dangerous and bad decision?

    Correct and Good 44%
    Dangerous and Bad 45%

Once again, the party breakdown is quite telling:

    Democrats
    Correct and Good 62%
    Dangerous and Bad 26%

    Republicans
    Correct and Good 24%
    Dangerous and Bad 57%

    Independents
    Correct and Good 40%
    Dangerous and Bad 50%

In both of these questions, Independents overwhelmingly side with Republicans over Democrats.

Time Magazine released a poll tonight in which one of the questions
    asked:

Which one of the following plans for US policy in Iraq comes closest to your own position?

Withdraw all troops from Iraq in the next 12 months or so whatever happens in Iraq 32%

Set sliding deadlines for withdrawing most US combat troops by August 31, 2008, with the withdrawal schedule depending on the Iraqi government’s progress in training its forces and bringing stability to Iraq 36%

Keep US troops in Iraq as long as needed until the Iraqis can handle the situation themselves 28%

Despite the best efforts of Time to characterize those who favor the setting of a sliding deadline as distinct from those who support keeping troops in Iraq as long as necessary, in effect, nearly 2/3 of the American people today (64 percent) are advocating a conditions-based withdrawal; conversely, opposing an arbitrary deadline predicated in retreat and surrender.

Tim Russert, George Stephanopolous, Bob Schieffer…prove me wrong. Feel free to express astonishment and shock as you report these poll results that run in such stark contrast to the blatantly distorted narrative you’ve been desperately seeking to embed in the heads of your viewers the past four years.

Here’s an unrelated, thinly-veiled poll question of which I surmise Fox News haters will be less than thrilled to see the findings, especially amongst the crucial registered Independent voters:

If a political party agrees to participate in debates hosted by one television network but refuses to do debates hosted by another network, do you think it is fair to say the party is picking the network it believes is more aligned with its views and so would ask easier questions during the debate?

    Yes 66%
    No 21%

    Democrats
    Yes 61%
    No 25%

    Republicans
    Yes 69%
    No 19%

    Independents
    Yes 72%
    No 14%

Moveon.org may have won a battle in Nevada, but it probably cost them the war in seeking to discredit Fox News.

But you saying that “43% of the respondents consider themselves Democrats, 35% Republicans. (16% independent)” is hillarious. And we know the most ardent neocons around here claim to be “independent”. And your team still loses. Do the math.

  89. Mark says:

#69 Jake are you delusional? Never mind…

Back when I took a quantitative methods class our instructor was discussing polling and had several examples of polling during the Clinton era. Essentially the polls he showed were poorly designed polls designed to elicit specific responses. He guided us through the various questions and showed where the faults with each were etc… this was done because we were to design a poll execute it and analyze it. By the way the polls in question were designed to get you to view Clinton in a negative light and guess what the polls showed that people viewed Clinton in a negative light. The polls were corrected and re-run and the results changed 180 degrees. very interesting.

#70 how about wording the question this way, do you favor our constitution or a military dictatorship?

#71 all polls are not crap, a well designed poll can accurately reflect the publics mood, a poorly designed poll will only tell you what you want to hear. And a person calling asking questions is far from the people who actually make up the polls. I argue with the poll people when they call and have shitty questions, which is probably not fair to the person making the call, but they need to know when their poll sucks.

#78 they did ask about how people feel about Bush running the war the choices were good, very good excellently, fantastic, Better than Marshall. Most people chose not to answer so they struck it from their results.

Now it’s our Party: we bought it, we own it and we’re going to take it back.’ Do you think the Democratic Party should allow a grassroots organization like Moveon.org to take it over or should it resist this type of takeover?

Obviously Patrick’s handlers are disappointed in his “original” work, which seems to consist entirely of very stupid one-liners, so his efforts have been redirected to cut and paste from other right wing blogs.

Or they may use their polls to show their advertisers that they are following the wishes of their viewers. And because they clearly have a right wing agenda they need to follow, they need to counteract any negative comments the advertisers may be getting from the public. The best defense is a good offense after all.

It is a good question. If Congress wants to run the war perhaps we should ask the American people if that is a good idea.

    Comment by Patrick1 — April 2, 2007 @ 4:28 pm

The American people gave their opinion in the November election you idiot.

  96. VerbalKint says:

It must really hurt when your bosses tell you that your original work is so bad that you must stop writing it and must start plagiarizing others instead. Especially when your work is so unambitious to begin with. Geez, the guy is so freakin’ incompetent that he is failing his job as a TP troll! How bad is that? Maybe we should lay off poor Patrick for a while.

    Nah.

Yeah, we’re hilarious. Why don’t you read the questions on that “poll?” Now that’s funny! Then come back and tell us how well Fox did with their push poll.

  120. Captain Kirk says:

what foxnews did is ask the questions that the left wing media doesn’t dare ask because they know that they will get an answer that nutjobs like thinkprogress.org, moveon.org, etc, etc won’t like.

poor thinkprogress.org and liberals crying because the nation sees right through the liberal and Democrat Part Demagoguery.

Prediction….in the next election Republicans will take back the House and the Senate and win the Presidency.

    Comment by rabidbunny

Maybe you should read up on the art/science of poll taking. Polls are by no means perfect, but you can minipulate people into giving the answers you want.

Fox took this poll with a certain conclusion in mind — it’s called a push poll.

Wrong again-simple question do you think it is a waste of taxpayers money-yes or no. Just because you don’t like the results don’t cry that it was manipulation. Pathetic.

F*ck you, idiot. I would be just as unhappy with this poll if it were taken by MoveOn. Please, don’t try to educate yourself. Makes no difference to me, moron.

  132. ForTruth says:

Do you think its a waste of taxpayers money for all that stuff Ken Starr did?

Fox news people would say “hell no.”

Now they ask: Do you think its a waste of taxpayers money for these current investigations, now they say “hell yeah”.

Todays stupid Cavuto question was. “Is the Iran hostage crisis going to cause stocks to sag in the last quarter” Of course all the stooges said no.

How can I so easily predict the answeres to these polls. Not like they are leading questions.

  133. ForTruth says:

    Rabbit,

They should ask the general public that question, not the vacuum of idiots who tune into Fox.

    Rabbit,

I agree that it should be given to all the public, we don’t know their sample completely. But there is nothing wrong with the question.

    Rabbit,

They should ask the general public that question, not the vacuum of idiots who tune into Fox.

Also they were phone inverviews (not at their website), so how would they know if they were reaching Fox News viewers? That is like saying all NY Times polls have samplings of NY Times subscribers.

  139. rabidbunny says:

So you admit you can’t win an argument, since you called me “pathetic.” Thanks.

Actually I said it was pathetic to call this an unfair question, I never said you were pathetic. I’m sorry you cannot discern the difference.

  140. Zooey says:

    I’m sorry….
    Comment by rabidbunny

    I know you are.

    I work for Fox now.

  141. ForTruth says:

    Rabbit,

The FoxNews Polls I’m talking about are always on thier website. If they intermingle the phone and website feedback, its still has the vacuum effect from the website. I tend to look at thier daily polls on thier website.

  142. ForTruth says:

    Rabbit,

I saw the exact question on the Fox News website a few days ago. I find that to be sampling in a vacuum.

    The questions are always stupit.

Here’s an example of a Fox News website poll question.
From earlier today. I am paraphrasing, not quoting.

Will the stockmarket do poorly in the last quarter due to the Iranian hostage crisis?

I thought it will. The popular responses were of course no.

  143. ForTruth says:

Basically a poll is stoopit if the outcome can be accurately predicted every time. I find that to be the case everyday when I log on to the FoxNews.com and check it. It’s actually entertaining.

Obviously polls done on websites are going to be skewed because they are only seen by people that actually go to the website. The questions here, however are done on random phone interviews so they don’t have the same vacuum effect.

Her argument was pathetic, I stand by that. I don’t think she is pathetic, just a little too jaded to see things clearly.
