“The crack of shots fired by unseen snipers echoed on Monday through Baghdad’s wholesale Shorja market, a day after U.S. Senator John McCain held up his visit there as one sign of improving security in Baghdad.”
UPDATE: “Last week’s suicide truck bombing in the northern city of Tal Afar is the deadliest single attack since the beginning of the Iraq war in 2003, a high-ranking Iraqi Interior Ministry official said Monday as a new death toll for the blast surfaced.”
McCain is lucky he did not get shot in the head, because he took off his military helmet to look tough for the press photo-op.
April 2nd, 2007 at 12:55 pmMcCain’s credibility is not reduced to zilch!
April 2nd, 2007 at 12:55 pmmccain is toast… zero credibility and he’s only succeeded in making himself a laughingstock…
And, yes, I DO take it personally
April 2nd, 2007 at 12:56 pmHey, it’s progress.
The people there didn’t have to fear for their lives for a whole day.
April 2nd, 2007 at 12:58 pmWhen McCain was a Democrat and a celebrated war veteran, he had some credibility; in fact, it was back then that people were suggesting that he might make a good President. Then McCain “fell from grace” when he “sold his soul and conscience” for the almighty greed & corruption of the GOP. His affiliation with the GOP and as a “war candidate” (not unlike Hillary in this respect)….tanked any chances that the people respected him enough to elect him.
Right now McCain’s “electability rating” would be somewhere in the 20’s I’d suspect.
Now with this “Baghdad charade” it’s clear that this “pro war candidate” who claimed that Baghdad streets were safe to walk on (while foreign correspondents were laughing at him and officials were being shot at) had to stick to his guns by wasting taxpayer money to visit and prove his point. Problem is: His point is not based on Truth and fact and now he looks like an even bigger idiot than he’s looked since becoming a Rethug.
April 2nd, 2007 at 12:59 pmGosh, I guess those bombed-out ghettos and caves have satellite feeds and get CNN. Damn liberal media.
April 2nd, 2007 at 12:59 pmGuess McInsane is implying that it’s safe to walk around with military guard protecting you, wearing a bullet proof vest, and being deep, deep, deep, deep inside the green zone? I guess this further “qualifies” his comment about how safe it is, doesn’t it? He’s a zero.
April 2nd, 2007 at 1:00 pmoh but mr McCain said it was safe… wait… you mean… he LIED to us! I am shocked SHOCKED I SAY!!
April 2nd, 2007 at 1:01 pmMcCain’s market walk reminds me of Dukakis’ tank shot. I’m sure all those merchant really appreciate that little visit yesterday now that shots are ringing around them. Hey but one guy has $5 they can all take the rest of the day off.
April 2nd, 2007 at 1:02 pmUnfortunately the guy who sold Sen. Graham the 5 rugs for 5 bucks will probably get shot dead by the sniper, that is if he has not already been killed or gone into hiding outside of Baghdad.
April 2nd, 2007 at 1:06 pmMcCain, quit politics, go home, and make bird houses for the remainder of your days. You are in no way, shape, or form, qualified nor in possession of the mental capacity to do the people of Arizona’s business. I would rather scrape a bum out of a gutter and put him in the White House than have this bumbling, Mr. Magoo, brain dead, moron as President.
April 2nd, 2007 at 1:06 pmThat McCain stunt was just that, a friggin’ stunt and everybody knows it. There isn’t one person I know that thinks McCain was safe and that includes my wacko republican neighbors.
April 2nd, 2007 at 1:09 pmAnd there hasn’t been much mention of the clossal waste of time, energy and money this stunt cost our troops.
April 2nd, 2007 at 1:10 pmHow much did this cost the taxpayer of the USA? I think he should pay for his trip to Iraq and pay for the soldiers and the black Hawk helicopter that protected him.
April 2nd, 2007 at 1:21 pmPerhaps McCain was testing the next rove/cheney/bush strategy for winning in Iraq….
He proved we can keep a person safe in Iraq. . . the formula is:
1. 100 soldiers per person
2. Three Blackhawk helicopers per person
3. Two Apache gunships per person
4. One bulletproof vest per person
So, exactly how many non-insurgent, USA loving people who deserve this level of protection live in Iraq?
April 2nd, 2007 at 1:22 pmAnd there hasn’t been much mention of the clossal waste of time, energy and money this stunt cost our troops.
I think the Americans who were paying attention got the message. It’s ironic; that McCain’s visit, done to show how the current strategy was working, actually showcased the very flaws which doom it to defeat. Just as with the “surge,” the snipers and bombers laid low (or were in other parts of the city causing trouble), reappearing after McCain left.
April 2nd, 2007 at 1:22 pmWith this update, March becomes the deadliest in Iraq since September, 2006. According to the GOP spin machine, this represents progress.
On another blog I put up the numbers for the last 3 months to show that the Surge was actually Stay The Course since things have been mostly sideways and it was explained to me that this indicated the insurgents were in their last throes. Can you believe that?
Haven’t we had enough explaining of how bad news is actually good news, I guess because it could have been even worse. How deep in denial can some people dig themselves, McCain included.
April 2nd, 2007 at 1:24 pmMcCain should go back to Baghdad and take Bush/Cheney/Rove/Gonzales and all should walk without guards and protection and do some shopping in what McCain calls a safe place. Now if they do come back injured they all should be sent to Walter Reed and live with the mice/roaches/mold/maggots eating at their open wounds. McCain was finished as a candidate for President when he sold out the American people and gave that famous hug to Bush. Now McCain gives hug and he’s out, Lieberman got that lasting kiss from Bush. Lieberman is like a woman who want let go of a man who only used her and the kiss was a one time only thing. But Joe is stilling waiting and hoping he’ll get another KISS from Bush. How sick are these guys.
April 2nd, 2007 at 1:28 pmMcCain has lost all credibility.
He has joined the ranks of the liars.
April 2nd, 2007 at 1:35 pmI’m surprised Jake the Troll hasn’t come out to moan about how the Democrats and the Liberal Media caused these snipers to shoot people just because they wanted to prove McCain wrong because Democrats hate America.
April 2nd, 2007 at 1:36 pmPerhaps Senator McCain should start up a tourist agency offering guided tours of Baghdad and its environs– maybe even side trips to Anbar Province, Karbala, Fallujah. Some of the tours could be deluxe, with lectures by Paul Bremer, Richard Perle, Bernard Lewis, and Blackrock executives on ancient and modern Iraq.
April 2nd, 2007 at 2:09 pmBut… but… Clinton! Carter! FDR!
April 2nd, 2007 at 2:10 pmWhat happend to this guy? He was supposed to be the level-headed republican (at least he looked reasonable compared to Bush…)
I guess this is what pandering to the far-wrong does to you.
April 2nd, 2007 at 2:20 pmHe’s like the Jessica Fletcher character on Murder She Wrote. Every town that she booked a trip to became a ghost town because they knew her visit would result in one of them dying. He visits a square, the next day they blow it up.
April 2nd, 2007 at 3:21 pm#23 I talked to some AZ dems back when McCain was the “maverick”. They said it was a smoke screen. That he was a dyed in the wool righty and the major reason he kept getting elected is because he brought home the pork (not sure why the MSM describes him as anti-pork).
April 2nd, 2007 at 3:25 pm#15 – SWB,
April 2nd, 2007 at 4:19 pmActually, there were two senitors on the shopping trip, so you should substitute ‘pair’ for each instance of ‘person’ in your post except for the first instance which should read ‘a group of two people’
snipers are supposed to be unseen, jeez.
April 2nd, 2007 at 6:20 pm…too bad the buses don’t run on schedule…
…in DUHmerica occupied Baghdad…
April 2nd, 2007 at 8:24 pmGEE, IF ONLY McPAIN HAD GONE THERE ONE DAY LATER—-HE WOULD HAVE MADE FRONT-PAGE NEWS AS A MARTYR TO OUR COUNTRY—-TOO BAD BOYS, BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME!!!!!
April 2nd, 2007 at 11:06 pmI dont understand why the snipers left. MC Cain and Graham would have been juicy targets
April 3rd, 2007 at 4:30 pm
