FACT CHECK: Lawmakers Of Both Parties Have Condemned Iran’s Seizure Of British Sailors

The right wing has repeatedly criticized the congressional leadership for staying silent on Iran’s capture of British hostages. Last night on Fox News’s Hannity and Colmes, Newt Gingrich said that “it would be wonderful if people on the left would speak up,” and was “saddened” that “the Democrats in Congress [failed to] pass any resolution before they left town indicating how wrong this was.” Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2007/04/gingrichfoxiran5.320.240.flv]

Both Republicans and Democrats have condemned the hostage situation. The Senate agreed to, and passed, S. Res. 136, a resolution “expressing the sense of the Senate condemning the seizure by the Government of Iran of 15 British naval personnel in Iraqi territorial waters, and calling for their immediate, safe, and unconditional release.” The bill was sponsored by Republican Sen. Norm Coleman (MN) and had 22 co-sponsors — 11 of whom were Democrats. The list of Democratic co-sponsors:

Sen. Joe Biden (DE)
Sen. Ben Cardin (MD)
Sen. Bob Casey (PA)
Sen. Hillary Clinton (NY)
Sen. Chris Dodd (CT)
Sen. Dianne Feinstein (CA)
Sen. John Kerry (MA)
Sen. Barbara Mikulski (MD)
Sen. Bill Nelson (FL)
Sen. John Rockefeller (WV)
Sen. Charles Schumer (NY)

Transcript:

GINGRICH: I’m very saddened that, on the left, all the people who have worried about terrorists in Guantanamo, I haven’t heard a single one of them talk about the degree to which the Iranians are breaking international law, violating the Geneva Convention, acting in ways that are clearly illegal. And this exploitation of these 15 hostages is clearly, fundamentally a violation of international law.

COLMES: President Gingrich, or, in this case, Speaker Gingrich would use this as a club to beat the left, because they don’t have the rhetoric that you feel matches the situation, so you want to make this a left-right division in this country?

GINGRICH: No. Wait a second, Alan. All I said is — and maybe you can prove me wrong; I’d be delighted — I’d love to have, you know, Speaker Pelosi, Majority Leader Harry Reid, various Democratic presidential candidates speaking emphatically about their commitment to the British, their alliance on the side of civilization, their opposition to hostage-taking.

I didn’t see the Democrats in Congress pass any resolution before they left town indicating how wrong this was. They’re very quick to attack the United States over how we deal with terrorists, but they don’t seem quite as quick…

(CROSSTALK)

COLMES: Who’s attacking the United States? Mr. Speaker, why use this at a time like this of international crisis to simply attack Democrats? It’s not an American issue, although they are our allies. We support the British. But why use this to be divisive in this country?

GINGRICH: I said it would be wonderful if people on the left would speak up. All the people who claim they care about international law, they care about obeying the rules of law, they care about treating people decently, here’s an opportunity for them to indicate their concern about Iran and the Iranian dictatorship. And I don’t sense any great outpouring of concern about how the Iranians deal with an American ally, even when it is in violation of international law.

Only took them about ten days, that is pretty quick for the surrender lobby.

  2. Captain Kirk says:

How about Pelosi, will she pass a bill condeming the kidnappings? oh wait, she is speaking to our enemies in Syria. Wearing a barka and conforming to their way of living.

I got news for thinkprogress.org…the Senate is NOT the the House….

I would hope you silly people of thinkprogress.org would be educated enough to know this.

Let’s do to Newt what he’s doing to them and see how he likes it….

Newt – how many times did you cheat on a seriously ill spouse and then break it to her you wanted a divorce while she was lying in her hospital bed?

    Oh wait – that’s the truth…

She’s too busy getting bills passed that Americans need.

Obviously you did not read the article, orit had too many big words in it for you to understand.

Check your local community college or High School for reading comprehension classes. You need to take one badly

  15. HAHAHA says:

    Capt Jerk:

Ohhhh SCARY.. pass a bill condemning the Iranians, that’ll do a lot of good wont it? Haha..

And as some of us have learned from history, democracy is rarely installed at the end of the barrel of a gun, or point of the blade. So bravo for Nancy as well as republicans SPEAKING with Syria and Iran.

Look if a broken country like Iraq can break our military, just wait until we go to war with Iran. Hope you’re of draft age to go die for the war.
If not Blackwater is hiring, go die while getting paid more.

Mar 29, 2007: This bill passed in the Senate by Unanimous Consent. A record of each representative’s position was not kept.

The surrender lobby didn’t even have the guts to go on the record. I bet Biden didn’t even vote for the bill he co-sponsored. He was probably adjusting his tupe when the vote was taken, Hillary was probably meeting with the Chi-Coms for some campaign cash and Kennedy was probably taking some co-ed for a ride.

    Comment by pete592

Well said, pete! I’ve had many discussions with hard core conservatives, and I’ve found that many times they do not research anything before commenting. In fact, I often cannot get them to research something DURING the discussion. In fact, after I research something during the discussion and present it to them complete with the source and context, they either refuse to read it or refuse to acknowledge it. It’s like having a discusion with a recorded message. Grr, argh.

  26. Captain Kirk says:

  28. Jericho says:

International law, that’s rich. As in the UN? As in the Geneva conventions? As in the Kyoto-protocol? Why is this republican hack still taking the word ‘law’ in his mouth when his leader has broken almost any law, both written and unwritten, framing the world into an unforgivable war for private enrichment and, basically, taking mankind back a step or seven.

  29. whiteyfresh says:

D:or maybe you feel really bad about what your father figure(Bush) has done to you, repeatedly raping your belief system, and are just confused into following in the abusive relationship….

    Comment by Patrick1 — April 3, 2007 @ 4:10 pm

I’m not saying it’s America’s fault. Hell, for all I know the Marines could well have been in Iran’s territorial waters. After the last six years of this Government I have problems believing a word they say.

The jist of the article is that the actions taken by the US have upped the ante. This isn’t to say that this wouldn’t have happened anyway but it’s something worth considering.

Dismissing the comment as “it’s always America’s fault….yawwwwwwnnnn” suggests that you aren’t willing to consider the consequences of US foreign policy. The US does not operate in a vacuum.

  31. hellinabucket says:

Let’s not get too upset with Newt. After all he doesn’t have a good understanding of congress.

  32. UKBristolDave says:

    Comment by Captain Kirk — April 3, 2007 @ 4:17 pm

Here’s a crazy thought Captain. Perhaps engaging with your “enemies” via diplomatic channels means that your troops won’t end up dead by having to go to war with them.

Would you rather posture like a big man and send young men and women to die or try and avert conflicts via diplomacy?

Remember, one is “glamorous” and has big explosions – just like a Lethal Weapon film!!! The other requires months or years of nuanced and delicate discussion. Bit slow and boring to be honest.

  33. valiant venus says:

I saw Joe Ciriccione (from Center for American Progress) this morning on Fox News. he certainly has a nice “made-for’TV” presence. I remember two things from the interview:

***He praised both the Iranians and Brits for seeking a non-confrontational solution. (That was great -BUT he did NOT condemn the hostage taking.)
***He praised GWB for apologizing to the Chinese when they held our spy plane for 11 days, and thought Britain might be examining the same solution.

(Joe, you reminded me of the kindly Ward Cleaver frm “Leave it to Beaver” fame. I was impressed with your even, measured tones. However, An adversary would not quake around you.)

  34. Patrick1 says:

Why is it worth considering? Do you want to rationalize every behavior by the mullahs in Iran? I guess it was Jimmy Carter’s fault the hostages were taken. It was the Marines fault they were murdered…blah blah blah. The old lefty crap of moral equivilancy that we saw during the Cold War has returned and it is just as wrong now as it was then.

  35. CZ-1 says:

    re: #26

once again, the Senate is NOT the House….

    Comment by Captain Kirk

Captain Quirk: Once and for all, Gingrich referred to “Congress.” The Senate is half of Congress. The Senate traditionally deals with foreign affairs much more than the House. Therefore, a resolution passed in the Senate about this foreign affair means Congress has acted on the matter. Now, grow up.

  36. Captain Kirk says:

    UKBristolDave,

I am all for diplomacy with individuals and countries that are going to be fair and follow through.

I don’t think Syria falls into this category, they tend to murder the leaders of other country they disagree with, think lebanon.

Diplomacy is great when you are dealing with rational people. Neither Syria nor Iran are being led by rational groups.

Why doesn’t Pelosi go visit our troops in Kuwait? If she cares so much about our troops, why isn’t she going there?

Syria is a terrorist state and dealing with Syria is like dealing with the Devil, you need to sell your soul in the process. Not that Pelosi has one.

  37. Captain Kirk says:

    CZ-1….

grow up? so half of the Democrats in Congress, (not even) condemned Iran, the other half decided to visit Iran’s buddy and wear barkas, right?

  38. AboveTheClouds says:

Gingrich is beginning pretty early for his “Bush’s failed Presidency is the fault of Democrats” campaign. Remind me again, why did Gingrich leave the House in disgrace?

  39. Mary Poplins says:

#26 Captain Kirk Why are you so worried about Nancy Pelois as Old Bushies sent FOUR Republicans over to Syria. What do you say about that jerk?

  40. ForTruth says:

  42. UKBristolDave says:

    Comment by Captain Kirk — April 3, 2007 @ 4:28 pm

“Syria is like dealing with the devil” – bit over the top perhaps?

So you’re saying that it’s pointless then? Hell, Saudi Arabia is a terrorist state but we still deal with them. What’s the difference?

  43. DM says:

I’m very saddened that, on the left, all the people who have worried about terrorists in Guantanamo, I haven’t heard a single one of them talk about the degree to which the Iranians are breaking international law, violating the Geneva Convention, acting in ways that are clearly illegal. And this exploitation of these 15 hostages is clearly, fundamentally a violation of international law.

Not to worry Newt, we’ve been assured that the Iranians will only be interrogating the British prisoners with Justice Department-approved techniques.

It’s an extremely provocative move by the Iranians – mostly because western foreign policy is governed at the moment by an ability to overreact as fast and far as possible – but it does bring to the forefront the argument American POWs had with the Gonzales memo: The Geneva Convention is a two-way street.

Or as one friend of mine succinctly put it: “Even animals know better than to s*** where they eat.”

  44. Captain Kirk says:

    Mary Poplins,

so what? two wrongs don’t make a right, right?

whether it is Old Bush, who was in power when? oh yeah back in 1991, or TODAY Pelosi visiting and eating with our enemy, it is wrong!!!

unlike you, I don’t see the world through Democrat vs. Republican….take off the partisan glasses, they only make you look like a fool.

    nice try though… :)

If Democrats care so much about our troops, why hasn’t Pelosi bothered to visit them in the middle east?

  45. Jason Baddo says:

What about the arrogant and hypocritical Americans ? They kidnapped 5 Iranian officials in northern Iraq in January. Where’s the outrage?

  46. Briseadh na Faire says:

    But nothing about this?

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry continues to push for the release of five Iranians detained during a U.S. military raid in January, Iraq’s Deputy Foreign Minister Labid Abawi told CNN on Tuesday.

Shouldn’t Congress be condemning the holding of hostages by Bush as well?

Why no loud condemnation from the Right about the use of black sites, extraordinary renditions, torture….oh, that’s right, they passed the Military Commission Act to make all that legal.

  47. BlueArkansas says:

I see it was all Fox could do to put even “Fmr” in front of “Speaker of the House” on the banner beneath Gingrich. I wouldn’t put it past them to eliminate it completely as a projection of their wishful thinking. I’m sure we all remember “Mark Foley (D)” and the even better “Libby not guilty” absurdities…

  48. Klyde says:

What do you say about that jerk?

he eats some more cheetos takes another swig of mountain dew then wipes the orange powder on his shirt. Then he starts thinking about the next outrageous dumb ass lie he can post to get an angry rise out of people and prevent them from discussing the real issue. In this case what a lying sack of dog choi gingrich is. It’s what they do. the wingnut bloggers put instructions on blogs for the ones to stupid to figure out on their own what to do.

For a minute there I thought Gingrich was talking about Israel……

  50. Captain Kirk says:

    DM,

the sad part is that you believe all the crap you just wrote.

typical moral equivilancy from the left…

sorry, Guantanamo is a four star hotel. Have you been there? have you seen with your own two eyes how the USA is treating these prisoners? or are you just regugitating what the left and the media has told you about Guantanamo and the prisoner treatment?

why don’t you get permission from the State Department and the armed forces, go visit the prison and hten come back to us.

in the mean time, stop repeating like a parrot the lies the left and the media are saying about Guantanamo.

we are treating our prisoners with a lot more respect than we treat prisoners that end up in our mainland prisons.

only a wacked partisan liberal would claim that Iran and the USA are treating their war prisoners the same way.

how truly sad that you think your country is capable of the lies that the left and the left wing media spew.

are you kidding me? they were caught in foreign land helping our enemy….

that is NOT kidnapping. I would agree with you if we would have taken the Iranians from Iran, but guess what, we took them from Iraq!

see the difference? or are you so blinded by your hatred of the USA that you only see wrong from the USA….

Not a problem. All Iran has to do is label them “non-combatants” and then they can do what the hell they want with them.

That type of outrage falls flat.

You do know that Republicans went to Syria this week too – you can read that much can’t you?

Since you are obviously a Republican, and don’t try that independent crap, why don’t you contact your House members and complain to them. THEY are YOUR representatives, Nancy is ours and we’re happy she went to Syria.

  60. Saywho says:

I don’t pretend to know exactly what happened but how is it that the Britt’s are HOSTAGES when they in fact are prisoners?

What we see here is IRAQ all over again. Since officials have called them HOSTAGES over and over again that has become true for many. Next we will be shown photos of trucks suspected to be mobile bio-weapons stations.

If we catch people they go to prison till they are dealt with. We even take people from country A (like Iraq) and transport them to country B (like CUBA another mess we made) to ‘QUESTION’ them. So why can’t Iran bust people in and on their space and why are they Iranian HOSTAGES rather than PRISONERS. I know they are not guests!

    The Associated Press

BAGHDAD, Iraq — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rep. John Murtha, both vocal war critics, were in the Iraqi capital Friday at the head of a delegation of House members on a fact-finding mission as the White House and Congress dueled over the expansion of U.S. forces in Iraq….
She said the delegation also came “to convey to our troops the appreciation of the American people for what they’re doing, to applaud their patriotism.”

here is a clue….don’t believe everything that you read, hear and see…

your bias against our current administrations is what makes you so willing to believe the lies being spewed by sites like thinkprogress.org, by “news” organizations like the BBC, etc, etc….yes, even Foxnews jumped on the bandwagon to report lies about Guantanamo.

Once again, Guantanamo is a four star hotel compare to the prisons in mainland USA, in Britian, etc, etc.

but left wing Americans and world wide, rather believe that the USA bad before believing that the media is selling them a bunch of crap.

and look, you didn’t have to waste tens of thousands of pounds getting a silly journalism degree.

    good job guy.

so how do you want to me to back up what I am saying…telling you that I have been there? telling you that I have close family that have been stationed there? or maybe telling you that I have family in the Red Cross that has visited the prison and met with prisoners there?

how do you want me to do it….I know you aren’t going to believe anything that makes your world spin….you are only going to believe the BBC, New York Times, and other “news” sources that tell you Bush is bad, America is bad and the poor prisoners at Guantanamo are suffering.

so once again, why don’t you get off your lazy chair, stop typing ridiculous make no difference posts on this thread and get permission to visit Guantanamo. Then and only then you and I will be able to have an honest, respectful, well informed conversation. Until then you are just spewing out lies from the left. But you are too blind to see it, or don’t care to believe it. It is common sense. Britian and America are not over there to be friends.. both Americans and British are probing Iran sending in special forces teams (according to our republican leaders)….

It is not a matter of belief. It was no big deal even if Britian did cross over. Iran is overacting their part. They are trying to make the world see that their territory is being violated by the west…. not shit? But what they really would like to do is catch a bunch of Americans deep inside their territory… but since they apparently cant they do this stupid stunt… not hard to see really.

Bush should stop all these détente games…act like a man… and go talk to the Iranians no BS… Just like Reagan did with the “Evil Empire”…

    House Speaker Pelosi Visits Iraq
    The Associated Press
    Friday, January 26, 2007; 1:41 PM

BAGHDAD, Iraq — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rep. John Murtha, both vocal war critics, were in the Iraqi capital Friday at the head of a delegation of House members on a fact-finding mission as the White House and Congress dueled over the expansion of U.S. forces in Iraq….
She said the delegation also came “to convey to our troops the appreciation of the American people for what they’re doing, to applaud their patriotism.”

There has never been an accusation of a bomb factory or any terrorist activities except by idiots in the blogosphere.

I am amazed that America thinks they can discuss bombing Iran at a moment’s notice, position attack forces in the waters off her border, send special ops into her southern provinces, and then act all shocked and appalled if she responds to these provocations in any way. I’m sorry, but, if America were taunting Iran in a barroom, no one would blame Iran for taking a swing at his nose.

    Comment by Captain Kirk

You live in a fact free world, Captain Quirk. What is your evidence supporting: “Pelosi is going against the will of the people.”? The evidence against your statement is that the Democrats were voted into a majority of the House and technical majority of the Senate in the last election. Public opinion polls show about 60% of the American people oppose the war in Iraq. You have no polling data supporting your statement. Your arguments are meaningless, unsupported drivel.

Only about 30% of the American people support Bush and his unjust, unnecessary, war-of-choice policy, but ALL ordinary Americans support the men and women of our armed forces. There is clear evidence that Bush and others in his administration DO NOT support the troops, as they are using them only as a tool of an unlawful, ineffective, harmful, pre-emptive war policy. They do not adequately plan for the conflict, do not provide adequate equipment and training, do not provide adequate medical services upon return, and they constantly use the troops as political props. They are driving our military into the ground while using up military equipment that will take years and billions to replace. They are effectively adding several dollars to the price of each gallon of gas while not demanding more fuel efficiency. They should be ashamed of themselves many times over.

2.) Minimizing the deteriment to children of all ages when illegitimacy became an accepted “norm”.
3.) Liberal hostility to traditional family.
4.) Acceptance and defense of feminine debasement by pornography and an EXTREMELY casual attitude about sex.
5.) Liberal sexualization of children. (Been to a mall lately?)
6.) Attacking national institutions such as loyalty, patriotism – and the determination to tear down national heroes.
7.) Medicalization of deviance and crime – leading to more deviance and crime.
8.) Casual acceptance of drug use.
9.) Lack of respect/manners in schools and social settings.
10.) Promotion of “victimhood” and the lessening of parental and personal responsibility.
11.) And the catch all mantra born in the 1960’s “if it feels good, do it”.

  221. mydogshakespeare says:

Accepting valiant venus’ challenge, I examined http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/libertine to discover these definitions:

1 usually disparaging : a freethinker especially in religious matters
2 : a person who is unrestrained by convention or morality; specifically : one leading a dissolute life

Certainly, this does not describe the “Republican Ideal”, even if it *does* seem to fit quite a number of their so-called “moral leaders”. Consider Mr. “When I was young and irresponsible, I was young and irresponsible” Bush. All growed up now, but recklessly, perhaps even “unconstrained by convention or morality” he lied about the imminent danger posed by Saddam Hussein to propel the United States into its first Crusader War of Choice. How about another: Ted Haggard, President of the National Association of Evangelicals, Head of the New Life Church, and occasional spiritual adviser to our “uniter”… gay lust, meth user, lies to evade personal responsibility. Certainly is a “new kind of life”, this “libertineness”.

valiant venus: it’s clear from your list in #215 that you think the worst traits of poor and uneducated people are indeed defining characteristics and goals of Democratic, or “Liberal”, philosophy. Obviously, your response to intellectual challenge is specious rebuttal… was this reaction learned in a public, private, or parochial school?

I understand where you are coming from, though: Personal Responsibility. It’s axiomatic in Republican philosophy. And since Republican’s put so much faith in it, every one who falls a little too short is automatically disparaged… even those who are willing to forgive their shortcomings; even those who are willing to help. Yep, that’s those lamentable Democrats you decry. The ones who cherish personal responsibility, as you do, but also put a premium on Collective Responsibility as well. That is, Democrats (or Liberals, or Progressives) are willing to extend a hand to folks who lack the opportunities to acquire, value, and manage personal responsibility, not merely punish them for the sins of their fathers.

For all your personal responsibility, you seem unwilling to foster its growth in those who lacked your exposure to it. I guess that’s just your restraint imposed by convention, morality, brainwashing, or whatever you call it. Certainly not your “liberal education”… no, not YOU!

#214 You have just moved yourself from an annoyance to an irrelevance. That post was just idiotic.

  223. valiant venus says:

#222 “valiant venus: it’s clear from your list in #215 that you think the worst traits of poor and uneducated people…”

Sorry to disappoint but many spoiled, wealthy people are guilty of libertine behaviours…does the names Paris Hilton, ring a bell? The difference – wealthy people throw money at their behaviour problems (i.e. throught PR firms, rehab, photo-ops, etc.) while the poor, lacking such resources fall deeper into societal backwaters…..

But lets examine a few of your specific examples:
GWB“he lied about the imminent danger posed by Saddam Hussein to propel the United States into its first Crusader War of Choice.” Again, you fall into the liberal talking hole, failing to mention that the information of the day was readily agreed to and accepted by the previous administration and the majority of Western intelligence agencies.

Ted Haggard - This poor soul is a liar, a hypocrite, a pervert and a druggie. (Did I forget anything?) You are to be congratulated on noting his role as a libertine. He has sacrificed his family, his job, and his reputation on the altar of “ME,ME,ME…” Hopefully, he can change his life around and lead a productive life.

As there is always room for personal improvement and correcting rotten, stupid or selfish behaviour. That statement is neither liberal or conservative.

You say, “...every one who falls a little too short is automatically disparaged… even those who are willing to forgive their shortcomings; even those who are willing to help.” ” Disparaged” is an interesting choice of words. People should only be disparaged for being habitually stupid – as opposed to liberals encouraging and/or excusing bad behaviour. But let me say, many poor to middle class folks are wonderful, watchful parents who help mold mold terrific, responsible kids….

To be honest, it’s hard to remember a liberal Democrat “who cherish(es) personal responsibility, as you do,”….

“…but also put a premium on Collective Responsibility as well.” Dems do this well!! (I think it has to do with anything having to do with “Collective”.) I remember how sad I thought it was when the Bush administration wanted to encourage faith based organizations to assist underpriveleged areas…..and that “God-thing” got in the way of too many liberals. IF Dems are sincere in bolstering poor communities that factoid should mot have gotten in the way of community improvement.

I was lucky – my parents were loving, fair and strict. They thought kids made mistakes to learn from – not to become a road map for their lives….I believe while someone is still here they can change for the better and I am optimistic most people are good…

    …defined as you mentioned above…

    …otherwise you’re just “creating your own reality”…

…as right wing gutter trash are known to do…

…pretty much ALL of those “definitions” in post #220 are NOT supported by the courts system…

…they are a matter of individual personal choice…

…and actually get people IN trouble with the court system…

…so take your head out of your god Bushiva’s a*s and STOP stereotyping and being such a bi*ch…

    …and maybe hubby’ll stay home for a change…

  226. valiant venus says:

Fat Daddy – I have taken my valuable time to educate you on aspects of a libertine social agenda – (YOU asked for clarification – I provided it.) (I further clarified shakespearespooch on several misconceptions.) Your request for Supreme Court cases to bolster my argument is another pathetic attempt on your part to shift the goal post. In conclusion, you may agree with the libertines, you may not. Regardless, the libertine agenda has had detrimental effects on our society, just as designed by social misfits.

  228. mydogshakespeare says:

valiant venus sure backed off the implication that “libertine behavior” was essentially a “liberal” trait. I was beginning to think you were wife_from_7th_heaven reborn.

That is until reading “IF Dems are sincere in bolstering poor communities that factoid (of faith-based government aid) should mot have gotten in the way of community improvement. Oh really? It’s the proposition that is all wrong: “Here’s some water, you thirsty man, just thank My God for giving it to you, and you can drink.” Shame on Bush (and you, too) for bundling government aid to the poor with strings of your mythology. Tsk, tsk, tsk. Nothing wrong with churches collecting money from their patrons to redistribute in “God’s Name”; those dollars are donated voluntarily to “God” and “His” earthly representatives. It’s bad enough that my tax dollars are used to kill people in unjust warmongering… I really don’t want them attributed to “God”; not yours or anyone else’s.

Here’s some classic doublethink: “People should only be disparaged for being habitually stupid – as opposed to liberals encouraging and/or excusing bad behaviour.” So, “Liberals encourage bad behavior”, like being poor and needing a hand(?), yet “Conservative help is ‘noble’ since is comes direct from the ‘Hand of God’”. You got it all wrong valiant venus, liberals just think some folks have it rough because of the circumstances they were born into, chose to live, or where to work, etc., and need assistance from those of us who don’t have it so rough… liberals actually believe the concept of “equality for all”, and are willing to work toward that. After all, it wasn’t “conservatives” who freed the slaves, earned women suffrage, or fought for the independence of our nation. You mistake Liberal “assistance” for “encouragement”, and imply Conservatives actually care?… typical of cross-eyed conmen.

Oh, and then there’s this gem: “Again, you fall into the liberal talking hole, failing to mention that the information of the day [Bush's justification for invading Iraq] was readily agreed to and accepted by the previous administration and the majority of Western intelligence agencies.” Well, there you go again, singing the same old song about how “Bush knew this, Bush knew that, blah, blah, blah”. Bush was in a unique position to learn the facts where his predecessors merely had speculation. Bush had inspectors on the ground, and eyes in the sky and could have determined the truth about Iraq’s WMD if he hadn’t been lying about spoiling for a war in the first place. As the truth comes out, and as all but about 30% of Americans know by now, Bush was cherry-picking, exaggerating, even pressuring intel agents to provide evidence to fit his story and bury the facts that did not. Shame on you, valiant venus, your kind of apologetic attitude is what brought an imbecile (some say “monster”) to head our great country.

As you wrote, valiant venus, “People should only be disparaged for being habitually stupid.” Ok, then you understand why I, and a majority of others, disparage you.
