Novak Floats New Dowd Smear: Bush’s Former Chief Campaign Strategist Is Just A Partisan Democrat

novakWhen former Bush strategist Matthew Dowd first publicly criticized President Bush, conservatives questioned whether “emotions” over his son’s deployment to Iraq were having an “impact” on his judgement. This talking point, which was repeated by President Bush during his press conference yesterday, has been sharply criticized as “insulting to the hundreds of thousands of Americans whose sons, daughters, sisters, brothers and spouses have served or will serve in Iraq.”

So conservative pundit Robert Novak has stepped in to offer a new strategy for smearing Dowd.

In his political report today, Novak tests the waters for a new attack on Dowd’s credibility, claiming that he is acting with partisan motivations:

Dowd views Bush as trapped within a bubble formed by his closest advisors, and blind to the public’s demand for withdrawal from Iraq. Some Republicans, however, question this sudden reversal, particularly since Dowd is a former Democrat and he expressed interest in working for Sen. Barack Obama’s (D.-Ill.) presidential campaign.

So desperate to undermine Dowd’s criticism of Bush’s Iraq strategy, the right wing is incredulously claiming that the man who dedicated six years of his life to getting President Bush “to the Oval Office and keeping him there” is really just a partisan Democrat.

Nothing they won’t do or say – and couple this with the recess appointment – what’s next – martial law ?

  2. yanceylebeef says:

Truly, in Jon Stewarts words, “a douchebag of liberty.”

  3. valiant venus says:

Since when would Barack Obama be against a partisan Democrat working on his campaign?

  4. yanceylebeef says:

Truly, in the words of Jon Stewart, “a douchebag of liberty.”

  5. JPark says:

It is amazing how many partisan Democrats have infiltrated the Bush administration. Richard Clark, Paul O’Neill, Matt Dowd. And they were so convincing as Republicans.

I wonder if this version will work. Those smears didn’t stick with Clarke and O’Neill and now they are trying it again.

  6. Patrick1 says:

Are Dowd’s credentials on military strategy as impeccable as Algore’s on the environment?

Now that’s a picture of someone who tears the heads off of small animals.

  11. Republicans are the fear and smear party says:

#3…please try to stay on topic. The topic is Novak’s smear of Dowd. Sheesh.

  12. cynical ex-hippie says:

Of course he’s a partisan Democrat. Our plan all along has been to get Bush elected in order to make Republicans look really really stupid.

    Bwahaha ha ha ha!

Okay, that’s not as funny as it would be if 3,200 American soldiers and countless Iraqis were still alive. Sorry.

  13. cynical ex-hippie says:

Didn’t Novak’s last column say Bush is the most isolated President ever? Does that make Novak a partisan Democrat (not that we would want him)?

  14. Raven says:

    Novak is a “floater”…

  15. hellinabucket says:

Remember that Novak has to work extra hard to get back into the good graces of the WH. His name is tied with the Libby mess and Cheney needs proof of his faith. He’s not going to get there on his looks alone.

  16. veritas says:

Aren’t they all partisan Democrats at this point? The Republican Party is mid-implosion and I presume they will jump ship – and soon. Certainly a modicum of “sanity” hits one otherwise demented by schizophrenic talking points when his own flesh & blood will face the reality of a war based on pure lies. I’d say Dowd’s son being deployed was his “dark night of the soul” and his transformed self emerged – one with a human conscience AND a soul. Dowd finally “saw the light” as the Reichwing Christofascists like to say. Well, time to apply it accurately to Dowd.

  18. Badger says:

#12 When Kerry lost the election, I was consoled with the fact that now Bush would have to reap what he had sown. The tragic war in Iraq is now 100% owned by George Bush. He got everything he wanted, and he made a total disaster of it. If he and his party go down in flames now….so be it.

  19. Republicans are the fear and smear party says:

#6…Are Patrick’s credentials for posting on blogs as impeccable as any other republican partisan hack’s?

  20. Raven says:

Lucky for him he doesn’t have to travel very far on his looks…

  21. El Tonno says:

“Democrat” is the new gay! We demand more forceful outings!!

  22. veritas says:

If I were Robert Novak I believe that I’d be keeping a very low profile at this point. For some reason, he managed to slip by the skin of his teeth in the Plame affair although we know how vapid this guy is and how his big mouth makes him just another repugnantly idiotic and irrelevant Rethuglican. I’m surprised that, following his tango with disease, he would take the chance of corrupting himself any more from the inside out. Novak reminds me of an insidious carcinoma deeply ensconced within who pops up on the radar periodically only to help us realize that his cancer has metastasized making his body habitus one totally necrotic, rotting piece of human flesh. That is, assuming Robert Novak is actually “human” at all.

  23. draftedin68 says:

    .

    Robert Novak?

    Who’s he?

  24. Raven says:

    Ahem……….. TP? Democart?

#7…. a Democart is what John McCains tour bus will be called on the day after the Repuglican primary…………

  25. Republicans are the fear and smear party says:

Raven, you are cracking me up!

  26. Cappy says:

The only way this makes sense is if Dowd knew that putting Bush into the Oval Office would effectively keep the Republicans out for several terms, which is pretty much the case considering Bush’s pitiful performance.

  27. JaneESchneider says:

The headline should read: “Novak Floats a New Turd.”

  28. Patrick3 says:

I see Novak is trying to keep his flip-flop sales up by creating controversy.

YAWN. SO OLD. SO LAME. SO BORING. SO DEEP THROAT.

  29. Patrick3 says:

Novacula finds a new blood donor!

  30. GSD says:

They don’t call him The Douchbag of Liberty for nothing.

    -GSD

  31. Badger says:

You can’t really expect Novak and his ilk to write columns about how Bush Liberated the Middle East, Shrunk the government, Balanced the Budget, and lead the free world.

  32. PeterW says:

Why is Novak not in prison for maliciously outing a CIA agent? How can any respectable media outlet continue to support this traitor?

  33. euni84 says:

At least Dowd is willing to speak out against Bush directly. The reaction from conservatives over his statement just proves that the Iraq war isn’t trying to accomplish what it set out to do: eliminate terrorism. According to the Borgen Project, $340 billion has already been spent on the war. I think there are better ways to spend that money–say by eliminating global poverty or proving education to children–to actually get to the roots of terror and spend the federal budget wisely.

  34. katy says:

So desperate to undermine Dowd’s criticism of Bush’s Iraq strategy, the right wing is incredulously claiming that the man… is really just a partisan Democrat.

and that only makes sense because a good many democrats, maybe most?, have no good will towards this man’s dealings of the past 6 years…
some think he should be welcomed “back into the fold”, the others say to shun the traitor to the constitution and the country…
i can identify with both stances…
    however, i don’t trust him at all… ever… never again…
    any of ‘em…

  35. Mike says:

Bush himself gets the award for most cynical and shameless person, more so than Novak. He suggested that Dowd was “emotional” because he had a son who’s going to Iraq. Imagine what that’s like, for a guy who would never raise a limb of his own to take part in his neocon quagmire, to brazenly attach someone as a father. If that’s not partisan, I don’t know what is. Definitely criticizing a president’s policies is not a “partisan” thing to do.

  36. circusfifthfloor says:

this creep has been irrelevent for years

  37. Patrick3 says:

Sen. Richard Lugar, Republican chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, pointedly told reporters that Bush needs to “have much more of a cadre of people in both houses, from both parties” visiting the White House “very frequently.” Lugar cited Bill Clinton as the model.

  38. Badger says:

340 Billion , that’s 1000 dollars for every man, woman and child in the country !!!!

  39. Bluedog49 says:

$340 billion could have purchased a lot of homeland security if the money were in the hands of adults.

  40. Patrick3 says:

But that’s just life in the bubble. That’s just what happens when you’re the President. And I knew that going in, so I’m not griping about it. -GWB

    Heh,

  41. SKdeA says:

Novak has what my husband calls a “sh!t-smelling-face” (it probably sounds better en Espanol). Why should anyone believe anything this professional liar says?

  42. JaneESchneider says:

Hey, SkdeA, Wayne told me that you left a nice message on his blog. He’ll get back to posting on it eventually, hopefully within a month or so.

  43. Krazny says:

    SKdeA,

I think the translation to English would be something along the lines of “a sh!t eating grin”. It is unfourtunate, that such phrases tend not to translate well from one language to another.

  44. JaneESchneider says:

He does look like a bulldog sniffing another dog’s butt!

  45. moi says:

    Novak is a douchenozzle.

Why hasn’t he been tried for reason yet?

  46. moi says:

    errr, treason, not reason… doh!

  47. Zooey says:

Why is Novakula not in prison…?

  48. Raven says:

He could well be tried for reason, there seems to be some doubt!

  49. cal says:

“Some Republicans question” = “Some people say” = “in my opinion”

  50. Bluedog49 says:

All throughout the 2004 election, CNN allowed this traitorous liar to sit in front of cameras and say the Swiftboat liars were honorable men. All along, CNN knew that Novak’s son was working for the Swiftboat liars. Novak is not only a traitor to his nation, but he’s a disgrace to journalism as well. He’s an operative and he always has been an operative.

  51. Hello... says:

I don’t think they should impugn the motives of this guy…much like we shouldn’t have impugn Zell Miller and Joe Lieberman…

…Sometimes a big inclusive tent has many different viewpoints, and a person shouldn’t be kicked out because of what they think about a part-issue.

  52. shane says:

Hey Novak, good way to blame it on the black man. Have you talked to Gingrich so you could find a brown man to blame it on next.

  53. RAM says:

    Novak: America’s greatest living traitor.

  54. chadwick says:

    The Right: Bat . . . Shit . . . Crazy.

  55. ForTruth says:

Not responding is the best strategy, it’s also the most difficult. You get back what you put in to it.

  56. ForTruth says:

Someone said earlier governments are more concerned with short term appearances that long term solutions. Yes the real long term solution to terror would be to eliminate the roots, the causes. Growing up in a wartorn nation, with perpetual PTSD, and constantly worried about the most basic of needs is the root of terrorism. Its not the religion.

  57. Briseadh_na_faire says:

    DARVO

Deflect – Dowd is just too emotional.

Attack, reversing victim and offender: Dowd is a long-time partisan Democrat and Bush is the victim of partisan politcs.

    Comment by vermin venus —

This president and vice-president have a unique talent for turning Repub-leaning people into partisan Democrats, don’t they?

  61. wmholt says:

I noticed that Novak wouldn’t take responsibility for his own opinion, merely stating that “Some Republicans” say… just like the Katie Couric interview with John Edwards and his wife, stating that “Some people say…”

  62. the republic of stupidity says:

Someone should do Novak a big favor and let him know he’s been dead for at least 5 or 6 years now. He certainly looks it.

  63. Raymond Funamoto says:

Novak? IS THAT OLD REPROBATE STILL AROUND? I THOUGHT HE WAS KILLED, WELL, HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN!!!!! SWIFT-BOAT-SHIT-SMEAR TACTICS, GIVE IT A REST, Rove, CHIMPya, Bushland Uber Allies, IT DOESN’T WORK ANY MORE, YOU ARE EMPTY FOOLS, ROARING YOUR MEANINGLESS WORDS ON THE STAGE OF LIFE, TELLING YOUR TALE OF USELESS STRIFE, YOU FECKLESS FOOLS, FULL OF SOUND AND FURY, SIGNIFYING ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, ZILCH, NA-NA, BIG FAT ZERO!!!! Dowd HAS COME TO HIS SENSES AND ABANDONED YA, CHIMPya, YOU PITIFUL EMPTY HALF-A-MAN, QUEER, PUNY, SCRAGGLY, NO-ACCOUNT BASTARD!!!!! WHY DON’T YOU SAVE THE TAXPAYERS AND UPCOMING CRIMINAL COURTS SOME MONEY AND OFF YOURSELF LIKE HITLER DID, YOU FILTHY NAZI-FASCIST SCUM, BUT YOU PROBABLY DON’T HAVE THE NERVE, THE GUTS, THE INTESTINAL FORTITUDE TO DO THAT, RIGHT?????

THE TEXAS TWO-STEP! Matt Dowd fled a sinking ship, much like his partner before him

This is an interesting bit of background on Mr. Dowd and a partner during their time in TX.

A McCann section starts off the page and that is interesting reading as well.

  65. Kate Henry says:

Oh, I get it. Dowd was under cover for the 6 years he worked to advance the Republic & Bush’s agenda all so he could, at this point in time, get some conscience and see the light. He was doing that for 6 years just so he could go work for Obama.

Knovak is an idiot and I can’t understand why anyone listens to anything he has to say. The man is a traitor. He outed not only an under cover CIA agent but also her cover company Brewster Jennings. That may have ended up in the deaths of American CIA agents whose cover was blown along with Valerie Plame.

  66. JPark says:

#52 Yes, hello Zell and Holy Joe truly represent Democrats. Right.

  67. MikeS says:

We should hope that Dowd’s wife is not a covert CIA agent.

  68. George says:

He was once a Democrat who was attracted to Karl Rove. Pass the barf bag! No thank you! Do not let this man near a single Democratic candidate.

Well, Karl is obviously a very, very, very bright strategist, has been a bright Republican strategist for 30 years. I knew Karl. Karl and I used to co-teach some classes together when I was a Democrat. We’d sort of do a Democratic/Republican thing. He and I got to know each other fairly well in that time, and he was a big reason why, besides my fondness for the governor, that I went over and became a Republican, basically a Bush Republican, in that time.
