does laura bush not represent the united states in any way? is she being respectful? or subservient? is she repesenting that women are not equal to men?
#86:"So what did they talk about? The date and time of American surrender to Islamo Fascism?"

[...] ThinkProgress has a post about the right wing media smearing Pelosi for wearing a scarf while visiting a tomb in Syria. The mainstream media has ignored that fact that many other prominent U.S. women (republicans and democrats) have done the same to respect the customs of the countries they were visiting. This is important, but I think it is more important to look at what the administration officials said, and what mainstream media reported, and to talk about the substance of her visit and not just the scarf. The media only wants a controversy for their ratings, and have stopped caring about presenting the real news. They report administration lies and distortions without correcting them, and wait for a good ‘ratings producing’ fight between the left and the right, when they bring the pundits on camera for their shouting matched. This is not news! It is media irresponsibility hiding behind false neutrality and the pretense of fairness. [...]

AntiMORON - ISREAL IS A TERRORIST ENTITY MADE UP OF DESPODIC CRIMINALS. They will never have peace until they admit the crimes they have committed against the Palestinians.

Arial Sharon is known all over the world as "The Butcher of Sabra and Shatila".
The victims have now become the victimizers.
Who has the Apache heli's, who has the tanks, the gunships, the weapons, the nukes?
What is a refugee and what is the definition of that term?
You believe in democracy so blindly that you don't see that democracy has to ensure certain conditions for it's people to live in security and peace. Same for our country the US.

Laura was in Israel you Einsteins. And she wasn't trying to imitate the Secretary of State either. If you guys want to appoint a Secretary of State, try winning an election. Any way you slice it, Pelosi is trying to negotiate with despotic criminals. They are in no way equal to the democratically elected government of Israel. Quit trying to justify the trip, it's just plain idiotic. You lefties would have us negotiate with Pol Pot...

Jeff - YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT HIJAB. It is a requirement for men and women. Since I am sure you will not be familiar with this contextually, then at least consider that you speak on things you really have no knowledge of.

Read previous posts above #268, 297, 305.

Once again, many of you know nothing about our history, our culture nor our how our faiths (Islam, Christianity & Judaism) are practiced in the East. You want to view everything through a myopic lens and a filter of only what YOU consider acceptable.

The world is a bigger place YOU ARE NOT ALWAYS RIGHT, PROGRESSIVE AND THE GOOD GUYS AND WE ARE NOT ALWAYS WRONG, BACKWARDS AND THE BAD GUYS.

Taking steps to understand different faiths and cultures in order to intelligently qualify what is faith and what is tradition/culture is integral in today's world.

SCION - Good Afternoon. Just checked this thread - yes if you are interested please feel free to email...abdallac@gmail.com .

Your point above is well taken and understood. However, there certainly seems to be a great majority of people on this thread that had/have not clue one about hijab, Muslim women's rights, the reality of being a woman in a Muslim country as opposed to the few sensationalized stories the Western media pick up on, and Islam in general.

It's annoying that no matter what I say to shed light on facts that are broader in the sense of everyday life in most countries - no one wants to even entertain the possibility.

Looking for your reply.

Obviously, your lack of knowledge is coming through. These three men below fought for our freedoms. George Washington believed in a standing army. If these men were liberals such as yourself, America as you know it would never have existed. You should live in Canada. You are not an american.

Wrong. You enjoy your freedoms because of people like me… Liberal, progressive thinkers like Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and Thomas Paine who wrote the US Constitution and created a nation that was never supposed to have a standing army. It is people like you who have destroyed what was once the greatest exercise in the theory of Democracy…

The Reform Pary of Syria (RPS) is just another neo-con-game. See this assessment from sourcewatch:

http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Farid_N._Ghadry

It's leader, Faird N. Ghadry models himself after Ahmad Chalabi. (Just what the world needs now is another Ahmad Chalabi.) Note that other than a profile of Ghadry on its website, the RPS "leadership" page is blank:

http://www.reformsyria.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=29&Itemid=47

Its offices are conveniently located at 1700 Pennsylvania Ave. The "statement" posted by Jeff is nothing more than a propaganda piece probably sent over from 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. or maybe AIPAC.

A statement from the Reform Party of Syria about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s disgraceful visit to the Baathist regime, and what it means to women struggling for rights in the Islamic world: Has Pelosi Gone Bonkers? (Hat tip: seekeroftruth.)

As a Muslim, I fully understand respect of our religion by visiting US officials and I applaud that respect. Had Speaker Pelosi worn the Hijab inside a Mosque, this would have indicated respect but for Pelosi to wear it on the streets of Damascus all the while she is sitting with the self-imposed Baschar al-Assad who has come to symbolize oppression and one of the reasons why women are forced to wear the Hijab as they turn to religion to express their freedom is a statement of submittal not only to oppression but also to lack of women’s rights in the Middle East. Pelosi just reversed the work of the Syrian civil society and those who aspire for women’s freedom in the Muslim countries many years back with her visual statement. Her lack of experience of the Middle East is showing.

Assad could not have been happier because Syrian women, seeing a US official confirming what their husbands, the Imams in the Mosques tell them, and the society at large imposes on them through peer pressure will see in her wearing a Hijab as a confirmation of the societal pressures they are constantly under. No one will ever know how many women took the Hijab on after seeing Pelosi wearing it. The damage Speaker Pelosi is causing with her visit to Syria will be felt for many years to come

In all of the photos I have seen of Pelosi visiting with state leaders in Syria, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia she is not wearing a head scarf. See the following links:

Nanci Pelosi did not just wear a headscarf visiting a religious site.

She wore a headscarf visiting a market, walking down the streets.

That's the difference and thats a problem

Head scarf big issue now, I think she should have gone with her behind half exposed as representation of American women. Yes Women are equal to Men but
they are also very different.

I think Nancy looked great!! I think it’s a look she might want to get comfortable with…..

Unlike you, Nancy Pelosi always looks great. But seriously, since you claim to be a practicing Catholic, you really shouldn't be so surprised by women wearing headscarves at religious sites.
