With poverty still rampant in the areas that produce terrorists, we are fighting a superficial war in which the terrorists continue come out of the woodwork. Terrorism to me seems a desperate attempt to get attention. Maybe if we were to pay attention to the humanitarian needs in each of these countries, instead of bombing the pants off them, we could actually combat the creation of terrorists. It seems to me that a “war on terror” would combat the conditions that create terrorists. With poverty still rampant in the areas that produce terrorists, we are fighting a superficial war in which the terrorists continue come out of the woodwork. Terrorism to me seems a desperate attempt to get attention. What are we doing there? If they really wanted to fight terrorism, the Bush administration would've joined in a multilateral effort with other nations to peaceably do so. One of the biggest ways to confront terrorism is to end global poverty. Our leaders need to not abandon Iraq, but support its growth and the growth of other undeveloped countries by funding the UN Millennium Development Goals. According to the Borgen Project, just 0.16 of out federal budget is spent on poverty reduction while $340 billion has been spent on the war.
