Breaking: Republican Congressman Darrell Issa Currently In Syria For Talks»

issasyria.jpgThe AP reports that Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) met with Syrian President Bashar Assad today in Damascus. And according to the article, Issa criticized the administration while on the visit:

Commenting on Bush’s criticism, California Republican Darrell Issa said the president had failed to promote the necessary dialogue to resolve disagreements between the U.S. and Syria.

“That’s an important message to realize: We have tensions, but we have two functioning embassies,” Issa told reporters after separate meetings with Assad and his foreign minister, Walid al-Moallem.

ThinkProgress contacted Issa’s press office for comment. A spokesman signaled Issa may defend the trip by claiming it was Pelosi — not him — who “broke the embargo” of meeting with Syrian officials.

UPDATE: More Issa criticism of the administration’s failed approach:

“President Bush, is the head of state, but he hasn’t encouraged dialogue. That’s an important message to realize: we have tensions, but we have two functioning embassies.”

UPDATE II: Issa is heading a 3-person delegation.

UPDATE III: House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) explains that it’s okay for Republicans to visit Syria, just not Pelosi:

Boehner declined to criticize [fellow Republican Rep. David Hobson] for joining Pelosi, saying her stature gave the visit an imprimatur it didn’t deserve.

“It’s one thing for other members to go,” Boehner said, “but you have to ask yourself, ‘Why is Pelosi going?’ She’s going for one reason and that is to embarrass the president. She is the speaker of the House. She’s giving (the Syrian) government more credit than they deserve. They sponsor terrorism. They have not been at all helpful. I wish she wasn’t there.”

Hobson defended Pelosi, saying she “did not engage in any bashing of Bush in any meeting I was in and she did not in any meeting I was in bash the policies as it relates to Syria.”

UPDATE IV: Greg Sargent notes that Rep. Joe Pitts (R-PA) also rapped Bush over Syria.

UPDATE V: Asked about the Issa trip, White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe says, “I think the administration’s position on members of Congress, Democrat or Republican, is very clear: We do not think it’s productive; we do not think it is useful; we do not think it is helpful.”

Darrell Issa isn’t in a “leadership” position and isn’t trying to broker any deals - He’s probably just gone to visit some relatives who fled Lebanon and Hezbollah and went to Syria……

What a complete joke the media have become. Republicans visit Syria on Sunday and Republicans visit Syria on Thursday, but it is a huge outrage when a Democratic Representative visits on Wednesday.

Total and complete lack of credibility. They should do more stories on Ann Nicole. That is all they are qualified to do.

  5. Ringo Says:

Is he there to undermine the President at a time of war?

  6. clb72 Says:

Issa was there on a purely humanitarian mission, to teach Syria the importance of democracy and the rule of law. His entire life is a testament to those principles.

    From wikipedia (footnotes omitted):

In 1971, Issa allegedly stole a Dodge sedan from an Army post near Pittsburgh. The allegation has made by a retired Army sergeant, and published in a 1998 newspaper article. Issa denied the allegation. No charges were filed.[2][3]

In 1972, Issa and his brother allegedly stole a red Maserati sports car from a car dealership in Cleveland. He and his brother were indicted for car theft, but the case was dropped.[2][3]

Also in 1972, Issa was convicted in Michigan for possession of an unregistered gun. He received three months probation and paid a $204 fine.[4][5]

On December 28, 1979, Issa and his brother allegedly faked the theft of Issa’s Mercedes Benz sedan. Issa and his brother were charged for felony auto-theft, but the case was dropped by prosecutors for lack of evidence. Later, Issa and his brother were charged for misdemeanors, but that case was not pursued by prosecutors. Issa accused his brother of stealing the car, and said that the experience with his brother was the reason he went into the car alarm business.[2][3]

In 1982, Issa allegedly used deception to take control of Directed Electronics Inc. (then named, A.C. Custom) from a former business partner, Joseph Adkins. Adkins borrowed $60,000 from Issa with Adkins’ company stock serving as collateral. Issa made a verbal agreement to give Adkins extra time to repay; but later Issa obtained a court order to seize the stock despite the verbal agreement, a move Adkins describes as cheating him out of the company and Issa calls the only chance to protect his loan collateral.[4]

A day after the court order, Issa allegedly carried a cardboard box containing a handgun into the office of an A.C. Custom executive, Jack Frantz, and told Frantz he was fired. In a 1998 newspaper article, Frantz said Issa had invited him to hold the gun and claimed extensive knowledge of guns and explosives from his Army service. In response, Issa said, “Shots were never fired. … I don’t recall having a gun. I really don’t. I don’t think I ever pulled a gun on anyone in my life.”[5]

  7. Ringo Says:

If the article is accurate then Issa’s behavior is as irresponsible as Pelosi’s.

We need to lock up and murder all these traitorous bastards, no matter which side of the aisle they’re on, right? This isn’t about politics, it’s about national security and protection of our interests in this war on terror, right? How dare they take the side opposite of our President, the side of the terrorists.

And how dare Israel be thankful for our talks with Syria! As far as I’m concerned, we should be blowing them up too. Right? Doesn’t that constitute an act of war against our Leader?

When can we see Malkin and our beloved Coulter go after these traitorous Republicans? C’mon now, Anne, don’t let me down!

  25. Dr Benway Says:

Now I am getting real curious about what has been discussed with the Congresspersons visiting. Is Syria wanting to pull a Libya but noone in the White House is listening? Remember the letter from Iran to the US from spring 2003. I can not blame you if you don’t, Condi didn’t either (too busy “mowing her lawn”?)

Peace talks resume in the MidEast, despite all Bush and newcons try to do to derail them. Can not run around using the (busted) military to topple regimes if word gets out the evil dictators actually want to talk.

  26. ben Says:

Let’s be clear no one here is saying it is a bad thing to do what the Iraq Study Group suggested. We’re just pointing out the fake outrage on the right and the incredible lack of credibility in the media.

But Fat Bastert did. During the Clinton administration, Fat Bastert went to the middle east and told them they could bypass Clinton and negotiate directly with the Repukes.

This is typical Repuke projection…falsely accuse the Dems of doing something crooked that THEY are doing, and hope it diffuses the issue.

I think you are absolutely right. Bush does not want any Democrat to talk to anyone in the Middle East, because they might find out how much he and his cabal have been assaulting and robbing from the Middle East in the name of the GWOT. Good thinking, James.

Bottom line when political figures attend meetings with heads of state in any official capacity (that includes a PR capacity as Laura Bush did) You are representing the US.

Hi, mighty aphrodite! I think I like that moniker better than valiant venus. (Besides valiant venus it makes you sound like a porn star).

That Pelosi is the real deal, huh? I mean, the way she upstages Condi and George on the world stage, and pissing off the Republcans who are now rushing in behind her to get a face to face with a Syrian leader. And the way stole the show and bypassed a photo op in Baghdad with Johnny McCain. McCain was probably pissing himself, having been upstaged by the likes of a San Francisco Liberal!

I mean, it just pisses me off the way she jerked the rug out from under the Administration—-no wonder some of the Republicans were more glad to be seen with her in Damascas rather than with McCain as he makes a complete ignoramous out of himself while shopping for rugs at the market.

    A real pisser, you know?

  57. valiant venus Says:

That distinction was not made by either the Republicans or the media.” Comment by Ben

So, Ben, Speakette Pelosi does NOT have a bit more clout than, say, Congressmember Adrian Smith from Nebraska? So if the Repubs and the MSM doesn’t make the disctinction, the distinction does not exist? What an interesting parallel universe you live in….

Dem SOLD - I must have missed a war report in the news - when was Colombia supporting enemies of ours when they were in the midst of fighting US soldiers? Your analogy is weak - at best….

  58. Willy Says:

Boehner said, “but you have to ask yourself, ‘Why is Pelosi going?’ She’s going for one reason and that is to embarrass the president.

Bush does an excellent job of embarrassing himself. Only thing is that he’s too stupid to realize it.

  59. goehl Says:

    the Boehner article:

“Hobson said the administration knew about the trip in advance and provided the delegation with a jet.”
Another tactic to try and undermine the Dems especially Pelosi. What - if Pelosi’s trip went well Rove can claim the credit?

Pelosi is cleaning house and restoring bad relations that came about due to the do nothing109th Congress and THIS moron we have had sitting in the oval office. She is not running for president or looking for any glory… Get off it repugs.
Sam Sedar, on his show this morning, played a clip from limpball - caller/callers are outraged as it is claimed here Pelosi wore a berka. How ridiculous - she merely wore a scarf.

  62. Jackie Rawlings Says:

Issa helped fire DOJ lawyer so Jerry Lewis wouldn’t be indicted now he’s off to see what Pelosi was talking about with the Syrian President. Yes three Republicans went before Pelosi to tell the President what Bush/Cheney wanted him to say, it didn’t work. Issa went to get information about the Pelosi visit and got nothing. Karl Rove is so stupid the Middle East leaders are smarter then the White House idiots. They know the GOP is in trouble and will play them like a drum. Rove, Fox new and all the paid media are worried about Pelosi what they should be looking at is what was Waxman doing during this trip. Did he find out all the secrets deals and torture done by the White House during the past 6 years. Now just think of this. Issa is now up on ethic charges for illegally involving himself in a Federal criminal investigation as he save a GOP yet now he goes to Syria saying he’s against Bush Policy. I know the President of Syria was laughing at how stupid the GOP is now, even a blind man could see through that.

  63. DM Says:

That’s one of the few ways that Bush doesn’t need help.

  64. MrBlueSky Says:

I truly wish our leaders were above this immaturity… how dare I wish that leaders (irrespective of party, branch of government, or personal world view) behave like adults instead of playground bullies.

I wished that Democrats and Republicans could have worked together to achieve a shared goal.

I know that Madam Speaker wanted to negotiate… but the Bush Admin was the first to act like little kids.

It truly bothers me that this kind of immaturity is taking place where leaders are working… (and truly scary that these kinds of people are the ones who are leading the whole world!!!)

  72. FatKat Says:

Issa…Donna, his motives are larger and deeper than we know! I look back at the recall that HE put into motion against G. Davis. The energy thing and the bedfellows in Texas had with Enron…We could go on, but He was the one who pushed for the recall, it was HE who wanted the job in Sacramento, it was HE who is hiding something, what - thats the bigger question, his motives are with others who are now in jail!

On another note, yesterday Bush was in Irvine at the training base, what a surprise standing behind him in his “photo opp” Jerry Lewis Rep (R) who was on the list to be indited by Carol Lam…

I just cant believe these cockroaches! There is a link between Lewis, Issa, and many many more…there actions show their arrogance’s toward the tax payer.
