Cheney: Senate Committee Is ‘Stalinist’ For Blocking Swift Boat Funder’s Appointment

Yesterday, the White House bypassed the Senate and recess-appointed Republican fundraiser Sam Fox as U.S. ambassador to Belgium. Fox contributed $50,000 to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, a group that slanderously attacked Sen. John Kerry’s (D-MA) Vietnam War service.

Today, Rush Limbaugh claimed that the Senate Judiciary Foreign Relations Committee had deprived Fox of his “freedom of speech” because it would not confirm him “until he would go up to Kerry and apologize for supporting the Swift Boats.”

He added, “This is the kind of move that garners a lot of support from the people in the country. This shows the administration willing to engage these people and not allow them to get away with this kind of — well, my term — you don’t have to accept it — Stalinist behavior from these people on that committee.” Limbaugh’s guest, Vice President Cheney accepted the characterization, stating, “Well, you’re dead on, Rush.”

The Senate Judiciary Foreign Relations Committee never voted on Fox. Last month, the White House pulled Fox because it believed “his nomination would not have passed” the Senate. The Committee never told Fox that his nomination was contingent on him apologizing to Kerry.

Note to Cheney and Limbaugh: Soviet leader Joseph Stalin killed between 3 and 60 million people. There is no comparison between this man and the Senate’s opposition to Fox, who supported a group that slanders U.S. veterans.

Digg It!

Transcript:

LIMBAUGH: One more, and that’s the recess appointment of Sam Fox. Sam Fox is from my home state, and I know Sam Fox — he’s an immigrant, a Ukrainian Jewish immigrant, whose parents would have nothing — when they died they had nothing. He is a totally self- created man, a great American. And he was treated horribly by Senator Kerry and others on that committee, simply because he had made a political donation. They essentially told him he did not have freedom of speech in this country, until he would apologize, until he would go up to Kerry and apologize for supporting the Swift Boats.

Now the President has recess-appointed him. And of course, the Democrats have said they’re going to investigate this and going to look into this.

This is the kind of move that garners a lot of support from the people in the country. This shows the administration willing to engage these people and not allow them to get away with this kind of — well, my term — you don’t have to accept it — Stalinist behavior from these people on that committee.

CHENEY: Well, you’re dead on, Rush. I know Sam well. He’s a good friend of mine and has been for many years. I think he’s a great appointment. He’ll do a superb job as our Ambassador to Belgium. I was delighted when the President made the recess appointment. He clearly has that authority under the Constitution. And you’re right, John Kerry basically shot it down.

LIMBAUGH: You go on vacation, this is what happens to you.

CHENEY: If you’re a Democrat. (Laughter.)

  9. GSD says:

Yeah Dick. Stalinist. Kind of like politically prosecutors from your own party because they won’t take a Bush loyalty oath. Stalinist. Or using federal money to pay writers to propagandize on the governments behalf. Stalinist. Like gagging healthcare workers from talking about abortion or environmental scientists from talking about global warming.

Dick Cheney is the new Uncle Joe.

  13. Bluedog49 says:

If Democrats argue about a given issue, they are said to be in disarray. If they agree on an issue, they are “stalinists.” This is just another interesting example of conservative projection. Stalin is known to have exerted tremendous discipline on his communist party members. Grover Norquist kept a portrait of Stalin above his desk for years because he admired the discipline of Stalinist communists. Karl Rove and Norquist have stressed discipline in the recent republican party, punishing anyone who didn’t follow the party line.

  14. Jackie Rawlings says:

Rush supports his friends Cheney because he can still get little girls to molest and he can keep taking illegal drugs.

  15. Bluedog49 says:

Remember, Limbaugh-lovers, your hero in his own words just last year: “I’m tired of carrying water for this administration.” The fat old drug addict was very disallusioned after the Mark Foley scandal. I guess he’s gotten over it and is carrying water again.

  20. IraqVet says:

    Lemme see…

GWOT is dead wrong, when THEY created the term and now are trying to distance themselves from the term that they branded as an accurate description of the global war we are engaged in…

Now, RUSH is dead on by associating people with Stalinistic tendencies, which, in fact, reinforces the stigma and stereotypical response from a party that seeks to strip ALL Americans of the life-long rights and liberties in order to hide their deceptive actions…

So, if we are indeed Stalinists, then that would make them NAZIS!!!

So who were we fighting in WWII again?

Dayum, does this man care about anything?

  21. ocdemocrat says:

In a perverse way(a common Bushie rationalization) isn’t Fox, and of course Cheney and this administration the real Stalinists?

How many American soldiers have been killed since the 2004 election was subverted by the politicizing of lies about Kerry and Democrats.

Fox is partially responsible for all the senseless killing of our soldiers since he propogated lies about honest people to brainwash idiots with Stalinistic tatics of repeating it soooo much, it must be true.

Fos and his ilk(including Cheney) are the 21st century’s Stalinists, and they are spewing their trash to our country’s detriment.

It is simply amazing that they do this every time, they accuse others of doing exactly of what they are doing.

If the Dems don’t FINALLY wake-up to the fact that this administration does not and never will play by the rules than they are useless and should get out of the way so we can have a revolution and be done with it!

I am so f*cking sick of this bullsh*t! Congress – Put these pigs in the docket already! They’re NOT going to listen to you any other way! I don’t know how many ways there are to say this before it sinks in!

  33. Karim says:

    What a set of idiots.

  34. Bluedog49 says:

Ringo: “Yes he did, but not without the help of the many useful idiots on the American and European Left.”

So, you’re saying that American and European liberals were somehow complicit with Stalin’s ongoing forced labor camps in Siberia and his efforts to wipe out certain ethnic groups in the Soviet Union. You do know of course that in the context of his own system, Stalin was a conservative and that many of the people he sent to gulags were considered liberals. I hope you take that into account.

In addition, your position would mean that you hold conservatives in our system responsible for things like the rape and murder of nuns in Central America since the soldiers who did it were supported and trained by conservatives in America.

I know you want to be consistent.

I didn’t say “liberals”, I said “leftists”…..and yes they were complicit.

Conservative is a relative term, Leftist is not. A conservative in the Soviet Union would be a devout Communist and anti-Capitalist, while a conservative in the U.S. is a staunch Capitalist and anti-Communist….Therefore your point is stupid.

You’re confusing labels. Capitalist-Communist isn’t the same thing as Conservative-Liberal. An American “leftist” is not the same as a Soviet “leftist.” American leftists stand for labor rights, human rights, personal liberty, social welfare, communities over corporations, peace over the military industrial complex. I don’t see how holding these positions had anything to do with Stalin’s forced labor camps. How exactly were American leftists complicit with Stalin? What help did they give him? Did they give him money? Did they make speeches in his behalf? If you can point to anything like that you may have a point, but so far your position just sounds like warmed-over Coulter-like blather.

Conservatives say these things all the time – leftists helped Stalin! There is absolutely no evidence to back this up. Most American leftists are not communists. The President’s grandfather had a bank which was closed by the government under the Trading with the Enemies Act for providing banking services to the Nazis during WWII. It’s much easier to link American conservatives to Hitler than it is to link American liberals to Stalin.

In the late 60’s, under military guidelines, not being in contact with your superior officers for 30 days or more was technically classified as Absent Without Leave. I’ve seen no evidence that Bush was not AWOL during the war. I’d like to know why he refused a physical and, in doing so, gave up his right to fly after we spent thousands training him.

    ——————————————————————————————–

Many intellectuals and artists openly supported Stalin all through the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s – some, like Jean Paul Sartre, Paul Robeson and even HuffPost’s own Robert Scheer, even supported Stalin long after his worst crimes had been exposed.

No they did not activlely help Stalin the way that Walter Duranty or Alger Hiss did but YES many did contribute to communist charities and many were active members of communist organizations that helped support Stalin. Most of these people were not intentionally evil – I’m sure they ment well, they were simply fools.

The list of artists and intellectuals who supported, through word and deed, Stalinist Russia is a long one.

You should read a few books on the subject. I recommend the following:

    Witness by Whitakker Chambers
The Opium of the Intellectuals by Raymond Aron
The Dragons of Expectation: Reality and Delusion in the Course of History by Robert Conquest

Prescott Bush’s dealings with German companies (although not with Hitler himself) during the late 1930’s was reprehensible.

It’s imilar to European countries today that do business with Iran.

  134. earlofhuntingdon says:

Mr. Limbaugh knows that Americans have no idea how to distinguish among leftists, social democrats, socialists, workers’ parties, communists, Trotskyites, Stalinists, and Lenninists.

Such things are virtually forbidden to teach in public schools, though a quick read of Howard Zinn’s American History would be a good introduction to some of them. But few of us do read about them or travel abroad to experience any of them first hand. In fact, being able to distinguish among any these is a sign that you should be watched, and probably are.

The Right in America has succeeded in severely limiting permitted discussion of these very different movements and ideologies, just as it has made “union” a four-letter word. In England or France, most of these are just routine parts of the political spectrum.

Some do refer to specific authoritarian governments considered historical enemies of the United States. Many are simply left of center movements advocating that their members have shared access to their country’s economic and political resources.

Like Mr. Bush, many of those who have such things prefer not to share, and villify those who want them to. Mr. Limbaugh gets paid to do that. He does it very well.

Of course you do. Because instead of addressing my main question – if American leftists were complicit with Stalin, were American conservatives not complicit with the Holocaust? Yes, some American leftists gave money to the American communist party. No, that does not make them complicit with Stalins forced labor camps. Prescott Bush and other conservatives helped the Nazi regime. That’s providing direct support to fascism.

    (1) and (2) are easy questions, Ho. You could simply answer yes or no. I don’t understand why you are running away from them as they are completely relevant to your blockquoted statements.

As for (3), I keep hearing that the invasion or occupation itself should be a considered a war crime for which the Bush administration should be brought up on charges of “crimes against humanity.” Well, what about the troops that did the actual invading and occupying?

  202. shane says:

You don’t know anything about him. You’re a liberal lemming!

    Comment by michael — April 5, 2007 @ 10:22 pm

Why does Bush want him so bad. Because he paid big bucks to get Bush elected by spreading lies about Kerry. Fox wasn’t even born in this country he just payed his way into the inner circle. If you had money you could too. But you’re stuck here with us, peasant. Why are you defending Fox. What’s in it for you? Is Bush going to make you an Ambassador. You people are such fools. Like accesories to a bank robbery that never gets his cut.

  278. UCSBClassics53 says:

Another reason we oppose him because this is another example of Bush’s cronyism, another example of him rewarding one of his pioneers and rangers. Do you remember Michael Brown? Remember what he was before he became the head of FEMA? He oversaw horse judges…as if that made him extremely well qualified to head FEMA. Did he have any experience in emergency management? Did Sam Fox have any experiencing that would make him well qualified for the job or was he rewarded because his money benefited Bush through the Swift Boat Veterans 527?

Bush and his ilk think that government is not meant to serve the people, but only to enrich his cronies and to reward them with high positions of power. Government is not something to be worked with, it’s a reward, a privilege without the responsibilities. Unfortunately, this is another example.

  279. whosebone says:

it delights me that Dick Cheney irritates you libs…….hehehe

  280. UCSBClassics53 says:

o and before you go with the CLINTON did it defense or the DEMOCRATS did it defense, take for example, the NASA appointee who tried to limit reporters’ access to a top authority on climate change…Do you want to know his qualifications? He worked on Bush’s reelection campaign and inaugural committee. He also falsified his resume, claiming he graduated from Texas A & M with a degree in journalism. Apparently Bush didn’t care that he had no background in the sciences, but all he cared about was that Deutsch would advance his ideology. This is WHY we are opposed to the Bush Administration’s appointees, because Bush has taken cronyism to the stratosphere…

  281. whosebone says:

lol…….oh yeh, like algore has degrees in the sciences…………lol, you libs are amusing……….

  282. UCSBClassics53 says:

yeah well at least he graduated college…unlike Deutsch…haha

but hell, it’s what goes in the GOP…if you’re a sheep instead of an independent thinker, well all the better! Welcome aboard!

  283. UCSBClassics53 says:

and is Gore currently on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change or any other scientific panel or advisory board? Is he a political appointee? Deutsch was appointed to be a writer and editor at NASA, would you not think that you might want some scientific background on it? Or is it like Bush’s Civil Rights division which is now pushing out career lawyers who have worked countless hours for civil rights in favor of political cronies and appointees who have no experience in civil rights cases and probably wouldn’t care less except for pursuing the Bush Administration’s faux specter of “voter fraud?”

Wouldn’t you think experience should count over political connections? Name Al Gore’s official government position and then I’ll concede you have a point…oh that’s right, he is a PRIVATE CITIZEN…

  289. UCSBClassics53 says:

I guess you forgot that I was talking about Deutsch here…and the sheep comment was directed at him…

  290. JPark says:

#282 Why would we need to do that? That is just stupid.

  291. whosebone says:

whats wrong jpark, cant get google to load?……….lol

  292. UCSBClassics53 says:

Was she negotiating with Assad? Don’t flatter yourself…

Pelosi will be traveling to Syria has part of a congressional delegation with five other members of the House of Representatives, including one Republican.

To be fair, let’s prosecute the Republican too under the Logan Act…

Way to spin all this as an OMG Pelosi is negotiating with “terrorists” outcry…

  293. UCSBClassics53 says:

so yeah, be fair…Republicans went to Syria too, but they are sacrosanct, aren’t they? I thought we didn’t talk to Syria…Gingrich did the same thing under the Clinton Administration, yet you fail to point that out…Shouldn’t that be criteria to get him under the Logan Act?

  294. big papa says:

    Comment by whosebone #282

…for the same reason YOU conned’self-serving Bushite TRAITORS…

…refuse to help us save America by prosecuting Bushiva and L’il Dick…

…on any number of “high crimes and misdemeanors”…

…I’m sure you won’t have to google the list…

  295. JPark says:

  296. UCSBClassics53 says:

#289, it’s clear where he got his Logan Act talking point…Free Republic of all places…

  297. UCSBClassics53 says:

Just for fun, I would like to ask our colleagues on the other side who claim that Democrats are undermining our country to comment on this tidbit from a few months back…

  298. JPark says:

#290 That is not surprising except that freeperland is less popular these days.

  299. UCSBClassics53 says:

    Gingrich went to China, remember?

One is to be praised, one is to be condemned…go figure…

    Praised:Condemned :: Republican:Democrat

  300. Valiant Penus says:

Hey! Cheney is smiling in that picture.

    Comment by Ringo

you can’t see where Rush’s hands are, can ya? Normally Rush likes underage vietnamese girls, but when he gets so pilled out…

  301. I WORFEUS says:

it delights me that Dick Cheney irritates you libs…….hehehe

Comment by jawbone of an ass — April 6, 2007 @ 2:02 am

    Lets see genius.

Cheney enjoys an approval rating in the LOW TEENS.

That means he “irratates” more than EIGHTY PERCENT of the United States of America…. hehehe

  302. Raven says:

    Are those natural smiles?
Only their pharmacist knows for sure…..

  303. kelso says:

So the Pres appoints Fox to a recess appointment. Fine, it’s within his power to do so. It’s also within the power of Congress to withhold every penny from the the U.S. Belgian embassy until Bush explains his reasoning for appointing Fox in such an underhanded fashion.

So, what unique talents or expertise does Fox have? The talent of making financial contributions to political parties? Well, I’m sure the amature diplomat will make a good puppet spokesperson, just like all the other hacks that W appoints.

  304. roooth says:

    Ringo,

Why do armchair warriors like you always have such lame excuses for not serving?

You didn’t serve when you could because you were a liberal then? And now that you can’t serve, now that you’re safe from having to pick up a weapon and defend your country, you’ve taken on the right to advocate war and death?

    What an ass you are.

If you had had the courage to serve, you would have met people like me, who were liberals before during and after our service to our country.

And thank God for liberals in the military, we are sometimes the only thing that stands between honorable duty and atrocities. Like it or not, we are sometimes the only conscience on the front lines.

It is the conservatives – again – who have turned our military into the mess it is today, from Abu Grahib to Walter Reed. And it will be liberals, dragging the mouthbreathers like you behind them, kicking and screaming all the way, who will restore dignity and honor to our military.

If it were up to me, you would be extraordinarily rendited to a secret prison camp in a foreign country, denied all the rights that I served to defend and you have given up so easily, and tortured until you had some recognition of the horrors your support for these monsters has unleashed.

Now, get off the computer and go upstairs. Your mom needs help taking out the garbage.

  305. underdog says:

This attack on Kerry was a horrible thing. I try and laugh off Bushy and his propoganda machine most of the time, but this one gets me all a flutter. Guts: According to Bush and his Evil Empire, no veteran should ever be decorated who did not get wounded by an enemy bullet. Bombs, chemicals, sharp objects or flying debris don’t count. ONLY BULLETS. Which would save a lot on purple hearts and ceremonies, but I’m really not thinking we should take ANYTHING away from the men and women who watched that hell and lived it and did so with courage and … blah. This seriously pisses me off.

  306. Beonda Pale says:

This is not the 1st interview Limbaugh has done, the president himself has also been interviewed by Limbaugh on at least one other occasion. But the lending of someone of Rush Limbaugh’s credentials as being a interviewer is new as a political phenomenon.

It used to be that talk show hosts that offer opinion over fact weren’t offered the same kind of legitimacy and credibility that well heeled journalists had earned over time. This is one of the things this administration has changed in the way the nation’s highest office speaks to the public.

Now, instead of questions of substance that probe issues, we are handed pure talking point garbage and cheap political one-upsmanship. And that this is done in the supremely ironic cause of moving AWAY from bias in the media makes it all the more disgusting.
