Pelosi Challenges White House: If I Gave Syria The Wrong Message, Prove It

Conservatives and media figures continue to claim, without evidence, that Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) delivered an incorrect message from Israel to Syria during her meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Pelosi insists that Israel’s message was communicated accurately, and has suggested a good way to prove it:

[Pelosi spokesman Brendan] Daly pointed out that Pelosi was briefed by State Department officials before her meetings with the foreign leaders and that State Department officials also attended her meetings.

So if Pelosi really committed foreign policy flubs of the first order, the State Department is in a position to confirm as much.

The White House certainly received a read-out of what exactly Pelosi and the foreign leaders said in their meetings. Significantly, the White House has not openly accused Pelosi of the foreign-policy missteps the Post had accused her of.

In an e-mail follow-up, Daly wrote: “WH has not said that because in fact the Speaker did not get the message wrong — she included the necessary caveats and did not say or imply that this was a change in Israel’s position.”

Indeed, despite President Bush’s claim that Pelosi’s trip sent “mixed signals,” State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said during his briefing today, “I don’t think [the trip] necessarily complicates anything that we’re doing.”

Show me the DECLARATION OF WAR from Congress.

No the AUMF is NOT a declaration of war! Which Bush did not even follow to begin with, which makes this conflict ILLEGAL!!!!

Also, as long as the Republicans do it…… It’s OK!!!! The Repubs put troop limits on Clinton, and a time table for the troops….. The Repubs, Hastert, went to Columbia and told them to IGNORE Clinton and to deal directly with the Congress……

Issa wouldn’t have gone if the SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE had not broken the embargo.

    Comment by Jake

Now before Pelosi went to Syria a Republican group spoke to the President of Syria. GOP House Members Virginia Wolf, Penn. Pitts and Ala. Aberholt.
No mention of breaking the embargo. Why? Bush ok’d his GOP reps. to go and talk but Pelosi can’t go. Then Bush ok’s Republican Issa’s visit. Why is Pelosi’s visit considered breaking embargo yet Republicans are free to do as they want. Now former Speaker Hastert visited the Middle East during the Clinton term just to make sure the Middle East didn’t listen to a word Clinton said. No problem there is it. The President of Syria knows what’s happening in the US as the scandal and lies come to light. That fake show by the GOP could be seen even by a blind man. Bush is busted and he knows it. Karl Rove’s tricks no longer work and the Middle East is finished with the GOP and White House. Only the paid media and Fox news are selling the lies that don’t work anymore.

“Jake” seems to be on overdrive today. I don’t know what I find more entertaining: the reactionary slurs of Speaker Pelosi or the desperate spinning of the parallel trip made by GOP representatives.

Pelosi is doing what needs to be done. Why does she go? Because Dubya won’t. If we had a real president, you know, one who really understood diplomacy and foreign affairs, she could have rested comfortably in Washington DC or back in her home district instead.

Yes, Bashar al-Assad is a thug and the son of another thug. Yes, Syria is run by corrupt people who hate Israel and don’t like the US very much either. BUT THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT WE CAN’T TALK WITH THEM!!! Syria is an important player in the region. We cannot ignore them or sideline them for “bad behavior”. Syria is not our lapdog nor will they jump through hoops to please us.

The United States faced an existential threat during the Cold War with the USSR. The nuclear arsenal they held could have destroyed us 1000 times over. Yet we talked to them ALL THE TIME!! We had well-established diplomatic relations and several US presidents even went to Moscow on official visits! Just imagine if we applied the same doctrine back then that the Bushies want to apply now. Would there ever have been detente without diplomacy?

I applaud Speaker Pelosi for doing the right thing and meeting with al-Assad.

So he can request that she is DECLASSIFIED, but the final say is the CIA…… (the originator)

This comes from a 20+ year ex-CIA who would know better than you, how declassification works….. No I am not referiing to me… I heard him on the radio, and he gave details about this and how declassification works……

The president can declassify what ever he wants, but that does not mean that it happens…… I must first be APPROVED by the ORIGINATOR.

Yet another lie from jake. If he’s served in the military he would have said so by now given all the challenges to join up and serve in Iraq that he’s recieved. Now he’s impersonating a soldier, (or marine). He just continues to sink deeper and deeper into his own filth.

Pelosi bugs the hell out of these mini turd blossoms.

  88. Jake says:

    For the record:

The Bush Doctrine is name given to a set of guidelines first unveiled by President George W. Bush in a speech given on June 1, 2002. The policies, taken together, outlined a broad new phase in US policy that would place greater emphasis on military pre-emption, military superiority (”strength beyond challenge”), unilateral action, and a commitment to “extending democracy, liberty, and security to all regions”. The policy was formalized in a document titled The National Security Strategy of the United States of America, published on September 20, 2002. The Bush Doctrine is a marked departure from the policies of deterrence and containment that generally characterized American foreign policy during the Cold War and the decade between the collapse of the Soviet Union and 9/11.

From now on, the U.S. would “make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts and those who harbor them”. The immediate application of this policy was the invasion of Afghanistan in early October 2001.

Hey Patty, that’s a good shot at Pelosi. Maybe you ought to send it into Sean Hannity as it might catch on. And her trying to be diplomatic by talking with a corrupt thug. I mean, she ought to just switch parties and snuggle up Putin over in Russia. Bush has seen his heart, you know.

Or that pre-war darling of the right wing, Ahmed Chalabi and his BS and lies that helped us get into the Iraq War. Him, Cheney, and Wolfowitz were big buddies, you know, and Chalabi even managed to get himself set up for a while in the new Iraqi government. And Dick Cheney and his Halliburton empire? Or guys like Duke Cunningham?

Really, Patty, you shouldn’t leave yourself open mentioning “corrupt thug” around here or you could fill the blog with hundreds of Bush thug entries.

  133. Mike says:

Actually, the troubling thing is that Syria has been at war with us for quite a few years. We just haven’t gotten around to reciprocating.

Anyhow, I really like the idea of having multiple foreign policies (and trade agreements). When that happens, we won’t ever need a President. Every Senator or member of the House or Representatives can negotiate with whomever they want and we can finally say goodbye to America. Thank you, Nancy! I have also heard that Florida would like to retake Cuba and, with this model, that can happen. California can then enter into trade discussions with Mexico and perhaps form a political relationship. The possiblities are endless! Who needs the Constitution anyway…it was probably written by some bitch white guy.

  134. hellinabucket says:

You want to be really mad at someone. Get PO’d at the State Dept. for allowing this trip. They supplied the fricking plane as well as signing off on it.

Let’s get that traitor Rice and anyone else who approved such a terrible display. I mean diplomacy? We haven’t had a need for that in 6 years. Nevermind there’s a US embassy in Syria and the review of all meetings have been looked at by the State Dept. showing that no boundaries were overstepped.

We can’t allow this type of communication and attempt to understand anybody else when there’s TERRORIST’s out there.

I can’t wait to hear from the Decider on this so he can fire Rice and throw her in Jail.

  135. Freep Burp says:

Folks, learn how stupid the WHite House really believes you are. And in many cases, they’re absolutely right.
    …….

Pelosi’s outreach to a state sponsor of terrorism is a “really bad idea,” White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said at a briefing in Washington. “Someone should take a step back and think about the message that it sends and the message that it sends to our allies.”

Perino’s remarks come as a group of Republican lawmakers has embarked on their own trip to Syria. Michael Lowry, a spokesman for Representative Robert Aderholt, said that the Alabama lawmaker will visit Syria as part of a Republican delegation led by Representative Frank Wolf, a Virginia Republican. Wolf is the top Republican on the House appropriations subcommittee that funds the State Department.

Perino wasn’t available to comment about that trip.

  136. Gregor Samsa says:

This post is meant as a rebuttal to a few points made by a certain lying, mindless troll:

Pelosi’s visit did not break the US embargo against Syria. The Bush administration has imposed trade, and banking sanctions against that country, but a visit from a foreign official does not break any “embargo”. This is one of the more ridiculous, laughable claims made lately.

A Republican delegation met with Syrian Pres. Hassan before Pelosi, so the previous claim about Pelos “breaking” an embargo looks even ridiculous -if that is possible.

Claims that a Representative should not visit the enemy in times of war are equally absurd: Syria is not at war with the US, the “global war on terror”, the “Axis of Evil”, and the Bush doctrine notwithstanding.

  137. RemoveBush says:

And, none of them gave comfort and support to the enemy during wartime.

    Comment by Jake — April 5, 2007 @ 3:56 pm

So when are you going to PROVE that we are at war????

Please provide me with the DECLARATION OF WAR provided by Congress…..

We were the agressors here….. We did not go to Iraq to help fight off some invading force, we are the invading force…

I won’t hold my breath for that proof though……

Show me the proof Jake. Show me a link to the Declaration of war by Congress……

If you can show me that, I will stand beside you 110%

  138. pgw says:

“I stand by my assertion that you lie about your service.”

you mean the “service” as in “mass”, as in “i attended a southern baptist catholic service”?

  139. Aimee says:

    That’s correct #10.

And as to Condoleessa Rice, she is useless.

We as a nation should be as one when it comes to the troops, but all I can see is the Republicans protected their asses I mean assets.

For a party of the Religious, they lie, steal, cheat, dividing the country, and are pro war no matter what the cost is.

I am a Christian, but I do not belong to their kind of Christianity. If Christ tried to speak with these people, they would probably put him into Gitmo.

Back to the subject. First, Nancy is a strong leader and a woman and a Democrat. I know they truly hate that. Second, she is not afraid of them, and they truly truly hate that.

  140. Fred Farkle says:

    Hey Jake,

You and I completely agree. pelosi (small p) has no business trying to set U.S. foreign policy during a time of war. Yes, Republicans have gone to Syria to talk to Assad, but they are there REINFORCING and REITERATING the U.S. State Department position that Syria MUST stop it’s support and export of terror, not trying to solve a conflict that has gone on for time itself like pelosi is doing. She is completely overmatched in the arena of international politics and diplomacy but is on such a power trip she’s assuming she’s got some legitimate “alternative” to official policy. She’s mistaken.

We are NOT at war with Syria, Iraq or Afghanistan. We’re at war with a violent, fanatical ideology; one that IS supported by Syria and USED to be supported by Iraq. One that could and would kill every poster on this board, simply because we’re infidels. No hesitation, no second thoughts. This ideology resorts to killing fellow muslims, using children as suicide car bombers and they don’t hesitate to hide behind women when bullets are flying their way.

President Bush has done an excellent job in this war, (NO attacks since 9//11 in the U.S. except for lone, lunatic muzzies shooting up malls and running over college kids with SUV’s which due to leftist enforced politcal correctness the DHS refuses to label as “terrorism”) and he deserves our support.

When and IF the dems win in ‘08 (doubtful since she’s pissing off even moderate democrats who are liberal on most issues but who support the war on terror), they can set all the policy they want. She has made the mistake of taking a slim win in ‘06 and calling it a “mandate”. It’s a mandate which isn’t there except in the shallow minds of far-left moonbats.

Hang in there Jake, the best we can try and do is educate.

  142. Gregor Samsa says:

I posted this before in another thread, but it is relevant here too -

At this point, not even Republican Congressmen care what the Bush administration says. Or at least not when it comes to Syria:

“I don’t care what the administration says on this. You’ve got to do what you think is in the best interest of your country,” said Rep. Frank Wolf, R-Va. “I want us to be successful in Iraq. I want us to clamp down on Hezbollah.”
3 Republicans part with Bush on Syria

Clearly, Rep Wolf has already separated love for his country from blind following of the Dear (mis)Leader; a concept the 30%ers have yet to wrap their teeny little minds around.

  143. Freep Burp says:

Fred Farkle, if republicans are really there for policy needs and Pelosi isn’t, what is the White House doing playing politics with peace? If what you say is true, then the republicans are putting party above country. That’s called treason in some circles.

Wise up already, you are way too easily fooled by this administration and by now you really should know better – it’s been 6 years of this, it’s at the point where everything they do is highly predictable and is always the diametric opposite of what’s best for american citizens.

Concerned that she stole a page out of the Bush/Rove playbook — that’s all they have done. In case you missed it, the Iraq war was entirely a political play — pick on the weakest link of the “Axis of Evil” thinking easy victory, prance around the deck of a battleship in a flight suit with a sock stuffed in your crotch, declare victory, stir up the brain-dead masses’ nationalistic, military fetishism and install your delusional permanent Republican majority. Oh, except one thing — these dimwits forgot they had to actually govern.

Yeah, certainly no politics with national security there. Or haven’t you noticed those little color alerts staged at key times during the 2004 election have oddly disappeared. I am just hoping to find some fool who will wager and pay me one dollar everytime the IDIOT Monarch, George, invokes 9/11 as the wheels continue to come off his BS administration.

Pelosi went to Syria to ask them not to send there terrorist out when Bush attacked Iran. Because Syria has terrorist and would not be happy if that happened.

Bush was dying to attack Iran – but Syria worked with them to get them to release the Brits. Whatever caused the release, whether it was Syria as they claim and Pelosi along with the non-neocon Republicans influencing them or not. Diffusing the tense situation in Iran is a good thing.

Bush is so psychotic that no matter how many people told him how dangerous it would be to do that his trigger finger was itching to invade Iran. That’s what he’s so mad about and that’s why this tirade agains Pelosi has been unleashed. Strictly because his new war plans have been foiled.

  215. Marko says:

Hey you retards that keep saying its a conservative lie that Pelosi screwed up a diplomatic message from Israel to Syria:

Pelosi did not carry any message from Israel to Assad

By Yoav Stern and Amiram Barkat, Haaretz Correspondents and AP

The Prime Minister’s Office has strongly denied that Israel relayed a message to Syria, accepting its calls to renew peace negotiations.

The bureau responded to questions raised yesterday by a statement made by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, following a meeting with Syrian President Bashar Assad. Pelosi said she had relayed a message from Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, to the effect that Israel was ready for peace talks with Syria.

The Prime Minister’s Office was quick to issue a denial, stating that “what was discussed with the House speaker did not include any change in Israel’s policy, as it has been presented to international parties involved in the matter.”

Make sure you actually find out what the Israeli government is saying itself before you yell out anti-Bush slogans.

    PPPLLLLLLEEEEEEAAAAAAASSSSSSEEEEEE

I don’t believe a word any of them say!

So before you go calling people “anti-Bush”, why don’t you do a little research?????

    Bush is a TRAITOR!!!!

He was warned about 9/11, and he did nothing…. TREASON!

Yet you blindly support him…… Oh, and just so you have some FACTS….. Here you go!

Fox News Sunday, 23 Sept 2001, Tony Snow: “Sept. 11 there was a report that there was a coded message that said, “We’re going to strike Air Force One” that was using specific coded language and made the threat credible. Is that true?

    • Condoleezza Rice: “That is true…. I will tell you that it was plenty of evidence from our point of view to have special measures taken at that moment to make sure the president was safe.”

Sept. 13, 2001, White House briefing:

    • Reporter: “Can you confirm the substance of that threat that was telephoned in…that Air Force One is next and using code words?”

    • Ari Fleisher (Press secretary): “Yes, I can. That’s correct.”

    • At Sept. 26th briefing, asked again about this, Fleisher said “I’m not going to comment on any particular threats coming toward the White House.”

    • This matter needs further investigation, for such person(s) with top-secret information may still be a threat to the President and others…

    • Tarpley discusses a large body of evidence and concludes:

“The official version of 9/11 says that the attacks came out of a distant cave in Afghanistan. But it makes more sense to explore networks and agencies which have means, motive, and opportunity, as well as a track record of advocating and promoting large-scale violence.”

How in the world does a group of terrorists obtain the code words for AF1???? So you see, it was performed by our government and Bush was warned to just let it happen and do nothing or he was next. By his doing NOTHING, he is a party to the crime and that is TREASON!!!!

  217. hellinabucket says:

Marko, you are quiet the asshat yourself. Pelosi didn’t state anything other than Israel’s policy. Read the links before jumping in. The link in the original post states she didn’t give a conflicting message.

#212 Liblogic got me again. I guess one could be flying over the ocean as well as another country; if you’re not over Iraq, you’re either over another country, or over the ocean, aren’t you? Whether the ocean or another country, I’m happy that you would now support Bush no matter where we got attacked.

Seriously now, no-flyzones were established by the UN obviating the need for Iraq’s ‘permission’.

If the USSR flew planes over our country, we would be at war – unless our missles missed – then we wouldn’t, according to liblogic.

Dog pissing = Wife beating? My simple mind? Puleese. Pretty Pelosi Puleese.

  219. Ringo says:

The leaders of Hamas and Islamic Jihad think that Pelosi’s doing a fine job:

One terror leader, Khaled Al-Batch, a militant and spokesman for Islamic Jihad, expressed hope Pelosi would continue winning elections, explaining the House speaker’s Damascus visit demonstrated she understands the Middle East.

Pelosi’s visit was opposed by President Bush, who called Syria a “state sponsor of terror.”

“Nancy Pelosi understands the area (Middle East) well, more than Bush and Dr. (Condoleezza) Rice,” said Al-Batch, speaking to WND from Gaza. “If the Democrats want to make negotiations with Syria, Hamas, and Hizbullah, this means the Democratic Party understands well what happens in this area and I think Pelosi will succeed. … I hope she wins the next elections.”

Islamic Jihad has carried out scores of shootings and rocket attacks, and, together with the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades terror group, has taken responsibility for every suicide bombing in Israel the past two years.

Ramadan Shallah, overall chief of Islamic Jihad, lives in Syria, as does Hamas chieftain Khaled Mashaal. Israel has accused the Syrian-based Hamas and Islamic Jihad leadership of ordering militants in the West Bank and Gaza Strip to carry out terror attacks.

Al-Batch expressed hope Pelosi and the Democratic Party will pressure Bush to create dialogue with Syria and Middle East “resistance movements” and prompt an American withdrawal from Iraq.

“Bush and Dr. Rice made so many mistakes in the Middle East. Just look at Palestinian clashes and Iraq. But I think some changes are happening for the Bush administration’s foreign policy because of the hand of Nancy Pelosi. I think the Democratic Party can do things the best. … Pelosi is going down a good road by this policy of dialogue,” he said.

‘It’s much better when you sit face to face’

Abu Abdullah, a leader of Hamas’ military wing in the Gaza Strip, said the willingness by some lawmakers to talk with Syria “is proof of the importance of the resistance against the US.

“The Americans know and understand they are losing in Iraq and the Middle East and that their only chance to survive is to reduce hostilities with Arab countries and with Islam. Islam is the new giant of the world,” he said.

    Thanks Nancy.

Given the numerous foreign policy-related powers assigned to Congress, it would be unAmerican to suggest that members of Congress shouldn’t meet with foreign leaders so they can do their Constitutional job.

So all Pelosi’s detrqctors can STFU. As long as they allow the president to be the “sole organ” for actual negotiations, there is no reason why members of congress shouldn’t go to foreign countries to gather facts, deliver messages, establish relationships, etc..

The Constitution gives Congress a much greater number and variety of foreign policy related powers than it does the President:

    Congress’s Powers:

    1) To regulate Commerce with foreign Nations
    2) To define and punish Piracies and Felonies committed on the high Seas, and Offences against the Law of Nations
    3) To declare War,
    4) grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal,
    5) make Rules concerning Captures on Land and Water;
    6) To raise and support Armies
    7) To provide and maintain a Navy;
    8) To make Rules for the Government and Regulation of the land and naval Forces;
    9) To provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions;
    10) To provide for organizing, arming, and disciplining, the Militia, and for governing such
    11) the Authority of training the Militia according to the discipline prescribed by Congress;

Compare that to the one foreign policy related power of the President:

    1) The President shall be Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the Militia of the several States

The President shares other some powers with Congress:

    1) He shall have Power, by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, to make Treaties, provided two thirds of the Senators present concur;

    2) and he shall nominate, and by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, shall appoint Ambassadors, other public Ministers and Consuls, Judges of the supreme Court, and all other Officers of the United States

So when an arguement fits your need, the Repubs will use the UN laws as an OUT!!!

But you REFUSE to acknowledge that the SAME UN states that a Soverign nation CANNOT invade another soverign nation without UN APPROVAL!!!!

So by YOUR logic….. Bush committed a WAR CRIME!!!

I’m glad to see that you are in agreement with that!!!

    Thanks for playing…….

    Bush = WAR CRIMINAL!!!

#223 Q.”So when an arguement fits your need, the Repubs will use the UN laws as an OUT!!! A. You bet your butt I will. I’ll use anything I can get!

    Q. “But you REFUSE to acknowledge that the SAME UN states that a Soverign nation CANNOT invade another soverign nation without UN APPROVAL!!!! A. Apples & Oranges. I think 17 sanctions are enough. How many more sanctions would you give before you gave up on the UN and asked permission from Saddam so you could fly over their country so they could fire missles that wouldn’t hit us so we wouldn’t be at war? I need an asprin.

    Q. So by YOUR logic….. Bush committed a WAR CRIME!!!” A. You got me there. Your liblogic is irrefutable. Bush is the devil because he decided it was better to fight terrorists ‘over there’ rather than ‘over here’. How dare that man!

  228. Marko says:

oh please. Bush is a liberal piece of crap anyways. He hasnt done one thing that he said he would have. Iraq war? so what Congress ok’ed that. To make arguements otherwise is stupid. If Bush had one shred of rationale, he would have put in 3 times the number of troops and really secured Iraq, not 180,000 and hope things go smoothly.

Democrat Franklin Roosevelt played nice with the Nazis? I’d better ask five-deferment Cheney about that. Or Donald “I shook Saddam Hussein’s hand” Rumsfeld.

Wasn’t Benedict Arnold a Tory? That is, a conservative?

George W. Bush: saving your ass, whether you like it or not.

    Comment by Jake — April 5, 2007 @ 2:48 pm”

    Saving our ass!?! Bwahaaaaaaaaaaaahaaaaa

Puppet-boy was AWOL (again) from his job and let 9/11 happen, the worst significant attack on our nation in almost 60 years. If he wasn’t AWOL, he would have heeded his intelligence alerts, and, at a minimum, stepped up airport security based on the August 6, 2001 PDB alone.

And you call that “saving your ass” ? Bwahaaaaaaaaaahaaaa.

This loser Bush is out to save one thing, and one thing only; the tattered remnants of a destroyed Bush legacy….., like that airhead had much of a chance anyway. He’s a punk, and innocent U.S. troops are dying for the Bush name, and not our country.

  236. Urban Sombrero says:

George Bush is not saving my ass or your ass either. First he failed to stop the 9/11 attack (though Pentagon officials canceled flight reservations they had for that day), then he let bin Laden escape at Tora Bora, then he lied us into a war in Iraq that has strained our army and actually increased terrorism. He insulted our military by sending our soldiers into battle without sufficient armor, has cut veterans’ benefits, and now the Walter Reed fiasco. Meanwhile bin Laden mocks us. That’s not protecting my ass. Bush has been as incompetent about this “war” as he has about everything else like Katrina, and exposing CIA covert agent who had a mole inside Iran. There is no reason to trust him about anything. Least of all winning this war. Can’t wait for the $4 a gallon gas, that’ll truly be “Mission Accomplished” for that joker and Cheney.
