The Washington Post editorial page today published a vicious editorial attacking Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), calling her “ludicrous” and describing her bipartisan trip to Syria as an “attempt to establish a shadow presidency.”
The editorial rests on two claims, both of which are baseless.
1) Pelosi passed an incorrect message from Israel to Syria. Pelosi said yesterday that she gave Syrian officials the message that Israel is “ready to engage in peace talks.” The Post falsely claims, “The Israeli prime minister entrusted Ms. Pelosi with no such message,” misinterpreting a statement from the Israeli Prime Minister’s office that simply reiterated its position that talks with Syria will not take place until Syria has taken steps to end its support for extremist elements. There is no evidence that Pelosi failed to communicate this message. In fact, Pelosi’s delegation specifically pressed the Syrian president “over Syria’s support for militant groups and insist[ed] that his government block militants seeking to cross into Iraq and join insurgents there.”
2) Pelosi is attempting to “establish a shadow presidency.” This claim is directly contradicted by the Post’s own reporting this morning, which states, “Foreign policy experts generally agree that Pelosi’s dealings with Middle East leaders have not strayed far, if at all, from those typical for a congressional trip.” Pelosi herself has “described the trip as little different than the visit paid to Syria the same week led by Rep. Frank R. Wolf (R-VA),” and she went to great lengths to express her unity of purpose with President Bush on terrorism issues. The Post’s own reporting today also cites several instances of members of Congress meeting with foreign leaders during the past 30 years. As ThinkProgress noted yesterday, in contrast with Pelosi’s trip, previous congressional actions abroad attempted to directly undermine President Clinton.
Fred Hiatt and the Post editorial page get it wrong on Pelosi just like they got it wrong on the recent Iraq legislation, the U.S. Attorney scandal, the CIA leak investigation, the decision to invade Iraq, and on and on and on.

A Pelosi “shadow presidency” would be a major improvement over a totally incompetent, “Bush league” empty suit.
April 5th, 2007 at 8:40 amWhen in God’s name are we going to, as a society, pull away the curtain in front of the corrupt media and the power structure they protect? These major papers etc. no longer honor their former journalistic principles of integrity and public service. They are ALL partying together. Literally. Just look at David Gregory at the Rove debacle as he bowed, scraped, and laughed at the pig boy’s rap fiasco.
April 5th, 2007 at 8:49 amWHEN are people going to start talking about WHO owns what in the media, WHAT their connections to power are specifically, and HOW do we take them down? Until we have a media worthy of all of us, progress against men like BushCo will be painfully slow.
This is not unusual. A Conserv666ative paper spouting lies is not unusual. The American people cannot be bothered with seeking the truth and the fascists know that and take full advantage of it.
April 5th, 2007 at 8:55 amLies work.
I rather like the shadow presidency idea. Have they arrested Bush yet?
April 5th, 2007 at 8:56 amI’m just farting right now before my other anus shows up.
April 5th, 2007 at 8:56 amI cann’t believe that the media can get away with false stories.
April 5th, 2007 at 8:58 amEverytime they say something that is false we need to call them on this. It need to be done right away because they keep repeating this.
WAPO is lookign more and more like the national enquirer every day. :o/
April 5th, 2007 at 8:59 amIf someone give me an algebra problem and I give an incorrect answer because I suck at algerbra that is “getting it wrong.” Hiatt and the ComPost are lying they have no interest in telling the truth.
April 5th, 2007 at 9:02 amthey can’t help themselves…
And, yes, I DO take it personally
April 5th, 2007 at 9:02 amI dunno why one should expect more from a propaganda rag. Hiatt and the like have cast their lots in with what they believe will be the winning side, election of ‘06 notwithstanding. Prediction: if the Dems win the presidency in 08, an “incident” “forces” Bush to declare Martial Law, the Patriot Act suspends the Constitution, and Hiatt and his ilk are safely ensconsed behind their gated enclaves, protected by Blackwell “mercenaries.”
April 5th, 2007 at 9:05 amWhen the US completely divests itself from all terrorist and “freedom fighter” groups, then it can start to tell other countries what to do. Until then, it’s just hypocritical.
April 5th, 2007 at 9:08 amI guess someone has to establish a “presidency”; goodness knows, Bush certainly hasn’t in six long years.
April 5th, 2007 at 9:09 amI don’t know why you guys are even talking about this. You never let the facts get in the way of a good smear. Every GOP attack dog knows this.
April 5th, 2007 at 9:09 amWashington Post = Bush Regime’s Propaganda “Poodle”
April 5th, 2007 at 9:09 amAn editorial is supposed to reflect an opinion. In a way, it was nice of Fred Hiatt to give us the basis for his, because distorted facts equal distorted opinion, and that - in my opinion, anyway - renders it meaningless. If this is how Fred Hiatt forms his opinions, it tells us two things about him: one, he’s already made up his mind what he thinks, and has no problem distorting the facts to support his conclusions, and two, his critical thinking skills are abysmal. It makes him a nice fit with the administration, though, doesn’t it?
A few more editorials like this one and there won’t be anyone who actually bothers to read them, just as fewer and fewer people are tuning in to the networks for much the same reason. When they continue to get it wrong, over and over and over again, what is the point in going back to that source for the truth or the facts?
The silver lining in what Haitt hopes is a huge cloud over Pelosi is that Nancy doesn’t cower before the Fred Hiatts of the media; she’ll be sending him off to stand in the corner with the rest of the troublemakers, and she’ll do it with her usual class.
April 5th, 2007 at 9:10 amThe media is no longer about journalism and bringing the truth to the people. The Bush Administration has brought “corporate spin” to the white house while using the news media as their “whore”. People are turning revulsively away from the mainstream media, particularly our youth, who recognize the hypocrisy and lies being paraded as truth. That’s apparent from their overwhelming support of Obama. Our youth will chastise us; our youth will bring our heathen souls to justice; our future IS our youth.
April 5th, 2007 at 9:12 amPelosi is attempting to “establish a shadow presidency.â€
They say this like it’s something bad…
There’s already a “shadow Presidency”…Cheney’s….and look at the state we’re in as a result of that. I can’t imagine how a Pelosi “shadow Presidency” would be anything but an improvement.
(Not that I’m giving credence to these pernicious lies, but “shadow President Pelosi” has almost as nice a ring to it as “President Pelosi” does. ^_^)
April 5th, 2007 at 9:12 amThe people overwhelmingly support Pelosi and what she is doing. She’s obviously “hitting a big nerve” within the power structure and the GOP to be eliciting such smears and attacks, isn’t she? What do they say:The truth hurts! And “If the shoe fits, wear it”.
Nancy is obviously trumping Bush & Rice and wearing the “shoes of the president” and doing so with greater finesse and aplomb than Bush has ever done.
Impeach now: Pelosi rocks!
April 5th, 2007 at 9:13 amGuess el presidente was worried that Pelosi might learn what his cohorts went there last month to squelch…..Cheney’s dirty deals abroad and more about our “outsourcing of torture”….heh..heh…guess Nancy will get an earfull which will bring about more investigations soon….can’t wait!
April 5th, 2007 at 9:15 amWho knows: The Shadow do!
April 5th, 2007 at 9:15 am“The most insidious aspect of the following well-documented agenda is that it is in fact so well-funded and all-pervasive that merely by discussing it, the victim is made to appear “unstable” in the eyes of those who are unaware or unaffected by these nonetheless very real and long-established secret government programs. This characterization of “instability” is then used as a pretext to silence the victim, thus simultaneously covering up the program, and intimidating others.
During the first phase of this Govt. program a person is broken physically and mentally. The methods used are typical CIA and FBI tactics like Cointelpro tactics. They use Echelon, Tempest, microchips, implants, see through wall radar, obtain informants, neighbors, and co-conspirators to harass, discredit, and harm an individual. Victims loose their families, jobs, homes, and cars. The ultimate goal is to destroy a persons life which will isolate them from family, friends. The
isolation is needed to have access to the person to conduct many of the experiments on them. All privacy and constitutional rights are thus stripped away.
After a victim becomes isolated from everyone in the world, the victim now has feelings of regret, remorse, of loss, trauma, and is drained and broken emotionally and physically. During this time many have been implanted with microchips. Many begin experiencing extreme pain to their head. Some hear voices. Then pain is delivered to various other parts of their bodies. The pain is delivered by Directed Energy Weapons. No one sees anyone around them causing the pain and no one is touching them, as microwaves, ELF, etc are invisible
energy forces. Along with drugs being administered by the scientist through either a drip system which has been inserted into an individual, food tampering, or injection all without the victims permission. Then Mind Entrainment begins.
Some of the weapons were known as non-lethal weapons. They use such weapons as extremely low frequency Elf electromagnetic weapons (which has been used in mind control), acoustics, harmonics (which have been used as a mind control technique), ultrasound, microwave audiograms, microwave pulsed, and radio frequency. Another electromagnetic energy beam can be used to induce “considerable agitation and muscular activity” or “induce muscular weakness and lethargy” this weapon is known as Ultra High Frequency EM. Pulsed Microwaves can enhance the effects
April 5th, 2007 at 9:16 amof various drugs and bacteria.”
The only hope I have is that most people do not read the editorials of newspapers. If they do, usually they read the news stories also. In this case, and many others, the readers’ minds will begin to spin like a pinwheel in a tornado. The reporters aren’t too much different than the editorial writers in their willingness to spin the truth, but just enough to cause a disconnect between what is reported and the editorial content. After all, the reporters have to work for the people that run the newspaper. As I understand it Fred Hiatt comes from an anti-Democratic background, so it would not be surprising that he would be willing to ignore the truth and make up lies. If you have not yet read Eric Alterman’s What Liberal Media, or Eric Boehlert’s Lap Dogs, do so.
April 5th, 2007 at 9:16 amAmerica: Sixty trillion pounds of muscle that can’t remember where it put its car keys.
April 5th, 2007 at 9:19 amSmall point - we’re in the Easter recess, and Bush is clearing brush in Crawford and hurling insults at Democrats. Pelosi is spending the week visiting political leaders in the Middle East.
Just so we are clear on who has sensible priorities.
April 5th, 2007 at 9:20 amOne other thing…
Anyone else feel a bit odd having to click on Post - I Agree on this thread?
April 5th, 2007 at 9:24 amThe article was definitely hard hitting, but I would not call it vicious. Why is it anytime an article is written about a democrat, this site and others instantly labels it vicious?
There is never going to be bipartisanship in this country as long as both parties continue to use catch phrases such as vicious.
April 5th, 2007 at 9:30 amIf you can stomach reading Hiatt’s editorial, check out the comments and the orchestrated deluge of Trolls supporting him. They’re breathtaking.
April 5th, 2007 at 9:32 amWhat’s more, the 3 Republicans, in AP’s words, broke with Bush on Syria as part of their trip. At least Pelosi didn’t say this:
“I don’t care what the administration says on this. You’ve got to do what you think is in the best interest of your country,” said Rep. Frank Wolf, R-Va. “I want us to be successful in Iraq. I want us to clamp down on Hezbollah.”

April 5th, 2007 at 9:53 amRead what Digby has to say about this whole fabricated controversy. In particular, he reminds us that Dennis Hastert went on a trip to South America in 1997 telling SA countries not to deal with Clinton but to deal directly with the GOP Congress. Shadow presidency? More GOP hypocrisy.
April 5th, 2007 at 10:04 amThe Washington Post has grown.
April 5th, 2007 at 10:15 amSnarky@10
A few years ago I would have called a post like that nuts. But after watching these people operate over the last six years sadly I agree with you.
April 5th, 2007 at 10:18 amThe vile eliminationist rhetoric that comes from the wingnuts shows that they want a violent crackdown on everyone who disagrees with them.
I can’t see a huge difference between Hiatt and Pelosi. They both put Israeli concerns above American. Hiatt’s just a little more rabid.
April 5th, 2007 at 10:19 amHouse Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) offered an excellent demonstration yesterday of why members of Congress should not attempt to supplant the secretary of state when traveling abroad. . . .
The really striking development here is the attempt by a Democratic congressional leader to substitute her own foreign policy for that of a sitting Republican president. Two weeks ago Ms. Pelosi rammed legislation through the House of Representatives that would strip Mr. Bush of his authority as commander in chief to manage troop movements in Iraq. Now she is attempting to introduce a new Middle East policy that directly conflicts with that of the president. We have found much to criticize in Mr. Bush’s military strategy and regional diplomacy. But Ms. Pelosi’s attempt to establish a shadow presidency is not only counterproductive, it is foolish.–
The Washington Post
Indeed. If Bush and Cheney were really evil, they’d both resign and stick the Democrats with a Pelosi Presidency for the next two years. The Democratic Party would never recover. Alas, neither would the country.

April 5th, 2007 at 10:22 amGood grief, can the WaPo get any worse?
April 5th, 2007 at 10:28 amThe media whores, specially all those filofascist ones, want to offset the efforts of the anti-war movements writing unreal, stupid, fantasized editorials to brainwash the few idiots that still vote for the reich-wing.Good Ol’ propaganda in the 21st century.
April 5th, 2007 at 10:29 amA century ago there were different newspapers: papers for the bosses, union papers, socialist papers, ethnic community papers.
No one was stupid enough to believe that the bosses’ papers would have the same view as the union papers. No one was confused when all the bosses’ papers came out demanding the government crush whatever strikers were striking at the time.
Now, the only newspapers left are the bosses’ papers, and yet people keep trying to convince themselves that, yeah, really, they’ll be the paper for ‘all of us’.
And once again people act shocked, shocked, when the bosses’ papers act like the bosses’ papers they are.

The Speakette, not content to hold the purse strings, is trading in her Dolce Gabbana high heels for presidential pants. (Somehow the scarf thing gets in the way…..). I did an internet search looking for Republican Congress-members who met with Axis leaders during WWII and came up empty handed. Surely some Republicans must have been meeting with the enemy and enemy sympathizers during FDR’s tenure!

I wonder if the godlike complex that the idiots that run thinkrprogress.org have would even allow them to believe that just maybe, just maybe…..they are the ones that are wrong….oh my gosh, the horror, imagine that thinkprogress.org could actually be wrong

s, I believe no progressive project could possibly be more important than first exposing, then changing the current media hierarchy… because the long-term success of all our other projects depends critically on that one.
It’s the most important thing we have to do, and the toughest one to figure out how to do. One approach is to add to the current mix well funded sources of information whose objectivity is actively guarded and promoted. Another possible proposal might be for “representative media” along the lines of “representative government.”

April 5th, 2007 at 12:53 pm#46 - Actually, Marty, Bush was involved in business with prominent DEMOCRAT Avrell Harriman. The same Prescott Bush “was involved with the American Birth Control League as early as 1942, and served as the treasurer of the first national capital campaign of Planned Parenthood in 1947. Bush was also an early supporter of the United Negro College Fund, serving as chairman of the Connecticut branch in 1951.” (wiki) I’m sensing a bit of a conumdrum, Marty. Nancy Palosi was OUT OF LINE for doing what she did. If she worked for any organization/business, she’d be “canned”.
April 6th, 2007 at 1:29 amBush lies continue. Rove and Cheney pull the strings. If they lie long enough and strong enough, people will believe them. Their truth squads were an example of turning the world upside down. They trample the constitution by torture. deception, spying on citizens, denying due process, and killing thousands of innocent people without a stated reason. Instead we get all sorts of “reasons” that change with the conditions deemed by Rove/Chaney team as plausible and saleable to the public. Then they manage the news. They deny Carter the opportunity to speak with the Syrian leader, who he has known for many years. The try to deny Pelosi. Their “Patriots” are traitors and their “unpatriotic” is patriotic. When will we prosecute them for the war crimes and unconstitutional acts that deny citizens their protected rights?
April 6th, 2007 at 8:40 amUnfortunately we have lived with a shadow Presidency (in many senses of the term) for over six years. The majority of voters elected other men but somehow we keep ending up with the village idiot.

438,000 Americans killed in War in 2006
America has 12 times the population of Iraq.
April 6th, 2007 at 1:06 pmHow would we feel if:
UN reported that Iraqi deaths averaged 100 per day in 2006.
100 X 365=36,500 X 12=438,000
Lancet Report on Iraqi deaths is now up to 655,000.
655,000 X 12= 7,860,000
Reports vary but many say 2,000,000 have fled their homes.
2,000,000 = 24,000,000.
438,000 killed in one year
7,860,000 killed in four years.
24,000,000 lost their homes.
Oh! How we mourned for 35 years the loss of 58,000 soldiers.
Oh! How we had world ending crisis in New Orleans with loss of homes.
Oh! What a crisis with loss of 2500 Americans from twin towers disaster.
HOW WOULD WE FEEL WERE WE VICTIMS LIKE IRAQIS? Think on it.
