ThinkFast: April 5, 2007

cheneybushes.jpg

In an editorial entitled “Cheney’s Chance,” the New York Sun encourages Vice President Cheney to run for president. The Sun claims that, were he in the race, “it’s hard to imagine that the president’s approval ratings would not be five or 10 points higher” because the administration would have “a defender on the campaign trail.” Note: Cheney’s approval is even lower than Bush’s.

The White House has unveiled a public Internet database that lists “all the pet spending projects lawmakers tucked in the federal budget for the 2004-05 fiscal year,” but does “not include the earmarks the president and his administration requested.”

Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) said this week of purged U.S. attorney Carol Lam, “She’s a former law professor; no prosecutorial experience; and the former campaign manager in Southern California for Clinton.” In fact, Lam served as a prosecutor for 15 years, and according to Lam, was neither a law professor nor a Clinton campaign worker.

The Justice Department’s White House liaison Monica Goodling yesterday “refused a request from the House Judiciary Committee to answer questions in a private interview.” Chairman John Conyers (D-MI) and Rep. Linda Sánchez (D-CA) earlier indicated that if Goodling refused to grant the private interview, she may be required to attend a public hearing and invoke the Fifth on a “question-by-question basis.”

A new Amnesty International report states that conditions at Guantanamo Bay prison have worsened. “Most detainees have suffered harsh treatment throughout their detention,” the report says, and a new facility opened in December “has created even harsher and apparently more permanent conditions of extreme isolation and sensory deprivation.”

10,328: The number of housing complaints received in 2006 by the Department of Housing and Urban Development and Fair Housing Assistance Program agencies, “up 65% from the 6,270 complaints received in 1996.” Last year’s number was a record, “with disability and race as the leading reasons for filing a complaint.”

President Bush yesterday recess-appointed Andrew Biggs, a supporter of Social Security privatization, to the No. 2 spot at the Social Security Administration. Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-MT) said the move “could derail any chance of a Social Security overhaul.”

“A newly formed consulting firm hired to account for more than $7.3 billion in Iraqi reconstruction money did not deliver a database that could help investigators track waste and fraud. … The result: Two years after uncovering one major fraud case, auditors still haven’t determined whether there was more graft in the spending of Iraqi oil proceeds.”

And finally: Former Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA) has been greeted at events recently by someone dressed up as a dolphin, dubbing himself Flip, who is highlighting Romney’s “flip-flops” on various issues. Earlier this week, Flip tried to enter a campaign event “but was caught in a net of young Romney staffers. ‘You need to leave the building,’ bellowed one, as he porpoisely pushed out the heckler.” The dolphin “would only admit to being a student from Davenport, Iowa. Asked what he school he went to, Flip offered: ‘The University of the Pacific Ocean.’”

7.3 billion of taxpayer’s dollars lost?? I’d say we look in Bush and Cheney’s pockets and offshore accounts for this money.

Orin Hatch is and has always been a misinformed fool who is incapable of intelligent discourse and always shows his bigotry and idiocy in public. There’s “no fool like an old fool”, Oren, so either get with the program (if your brains allows) or move forward with your life which, clearly, has nothing to do with unbiased representation of the people.

Wow, even the Republican-friendly NY Sun has turned against the party. They can’t possibly think Cheney would actually win, so the only explanation could be that they are trying to sabotage the Republican chances for the next presidential election.

  31. chimpeach says:

The Justice Department’s White House liaison Monica Goodling yesterday “refused a request from the House Judiciary Committee to answer questions in a private interview.”

Okay, she’s stalling for time. She knows too much and doesn’t want to spill her guts before Gonzales takes the stand. She and her lawyer and Karl Rove want this to go so far that a special prosecutor is called. That will drag the process out for a year or more. They can probably squeeze two years out of it. While that’s going on, Bush and anyone else who is asked about it will refuse to comment while there’s “an ongoing investigation”. In the meantime, they can try to make a deal for immunity, but she’d pull an Ollie North. She’d get immunity and then claim sole responsibility for everything. She might be too involved to be the one getting immunity. There might be somebody else who knows what she was doing besides Rove and Miers.

The best way for Congress to handle this is probably to go the harsh route. Subpoena her. If she refuses to show up, as she seems to be indicating, she’ll be cited for contempt of Congress, and she can end up in jail for it. If they think she’s going to win sympathy while she’s sitting in jail, they’d better guess again. The majority of people in this country are fed up with the administration’s secrecy, lawbreaking, and stonewalling and they want Congress to do something about it.

I mean the creepy factor, whitey.

It would be kinda creepy if “Dick” were just standing behind a hedge a few feet away; but to me, the fact that he was standing really far away makes it more creepy.

  48. GaPeach103 says:

Harry Reid should dispense with senatorial comity and censure Orrin Hatch because of his lies about Carol Lam. Hatch’s lack of professional integrity has been revealed for the world to see, and as such, it’s a black mark against the Senate. Then Reid should follow that up by banning from the Senate floor any Republican senator who says “democrat” when it should be “Democratic”! The lies and insults are not insignificant, but like water dripping on stone, are the slow erosion of proper public discourse, political ethics, and mutual respect among political opponents.

As for Dick Cheney, we should be so lucky if he decides to enter the presidential race. Each day (night) would be like Dracula rising from his coffin to seek his next victim (American taxpayer), draining her of life-sustaining blood (plunding American treasury, looting million$$$). Rund, Dick, run. See Dick run.

  49. bobcat_grad says:

    From the editorial about Cheney:

Mr. Cheney has virtues as a candidate in his own right. He has foreign policy experience by virtue of having served as defense secretary, and he has economic policy experience, having served as a leading tax-cutter while a member of the House of Representatives. His wife, Lynne, would be an asset to the ticket in her own right, a point made by Kathryn Jean Lopez in a post on the topic at National Review Online back in February. By our rights, Lynne Cheney would make one of the greatest First Ladies in history.

Seriously, who wrote this? Did they even read it after they wrote it? This is supposed to be an editorial. Written by an EDITOR. Who is supposed to watch over his journalists and correct/modify poorly written stories.

Reading this editorial reminded me of something I wrote in school:

“The duck went in to the water. The duck swam in the water. The duck was wet. The duck has feathers. The duck was almost shot by the Vice-President. The duck was lucky the lawyer got hit first.”

    I was 8.

  50. seth says:

that’s interesting- what will Cheney do after (if he isn’t in Federal prision)? I can only imagine that he will be made an executive at either an Oil company, or go back to Halliburton (in Dubai of course to escape U.S. prosecution of war crimes, and war profiteering). He stands to make way too much money- and that is all important to Dick.

There is no way he is even considering running for another elected office- he will never get elected again (unless in Wyoming or Utah).

To be honest, and a realist, he probably doesn’t have too may years left on this Earth. Considering his age, heart problems, being over weight, and a generally unpleasant prick- I’d say he has about less than five years left in him. Unless of course it’s true and he already sold his soul to the Devil, that will mean he’ll be around torturing humanity for eons… What a DICK.

The difference between the two is that Elizabeth Edwards is not a leading member of the criminal neocon cabal that has hijacked our government, shredded the Constitution, and is doing everything in their power to rape and pillage this nation, as well as the entire Middle East.

But I suspect that distinction will be lost on you.

What happened to the concept of the VP being the person who, being neccessarily a person in good health, could be capable of assuming the presidency?
Or who could have a chance of gaining the presidency after 8 years?
Chainee fit neither, and being aware of his background with Nixon, Reagan, and George senior, I was doubly concerned about what might be afoot.
Given that GW was obviously a complete incompetent to begin with…..

  60. And You Thought REAGAN Was Stupid says:

To paraphrase Mr. Cheney, he can go f**k himself.

The Dick, Cheney, is the epitome of what chronic disease looks like from the outside in. 92. TripMaster Monkey says:

    Dale sez:

So you ignored my point about Al Qaeda possibly targeting the Dalai Lama, and I ignored yours about whether or not bin Laden is dead.

And you’re seriously claiming to be stupid enough to fail to see the connection?

Fine. I’ll spell it out for you.

If a “terrorist threat” references as motivation a communication from a man whose communications have all been shown to be bogus since 2001, exactly how credible is the assumption that the terrorist group allegedly responsible for the “terrorist threat” is actually responsible?

Given this uncertainty, which is more probable? That a terrorist group attempts (and fails) to assassinate the Dalai Lama because of some nebulous theological dispute, or that an organization stages an “assassination attempt” against the Dalai Lama in an attempt to sway public opinion, reminding them of who they need to be afraid of and who is protecting them from the “threat”.

Put simply: false-flag attack. I’m not buying it, and I suspect there are many others who won’t, either.

Given this analysis, your specious question of ‘is the Dalai Lama evil?’ is beside the point.

So…how about you try to stay ‘on-topic’, mmmkay?

  93. lightning says:

Cheney for president!….oh my God, I just wet myself with anticipation…….laughter is all I can think of when I try to imagine Big Dick Cheney leading us on the world scene. Cheney as president would be at least…….predictable.

  94. TripMaster Monkey says:

Well, it looks like my last post went down the rabbit hole, so here we go again.

    Dale sez:

So you ignored my point about Al Qaeda possibly targeting the Dalai Lama, and I ignored yours about whether or not bin Laden is dead.

And you’re honestly saying you’re so stupid you can’t see how the two are related?

Fine. I”ll spell it out for you.

Every communication from “bin Laden” since the “fatty bin Laden” video has been bogus. None have been shown to be authentic.

A terrorist organization attempts (and fails) to assassinate the Dalai Lama. A “recent communication” from the dead bin Laden is cited as the rationale.

Given these facts, what is more probable? That a terrorist organization attempted to assassinate the Dalai Lama, based upon a nebulous theological dispute delineated by a communication from beyond the grave, or that another organization created the appearance of said “terrorist incident” to remind its citizens of who to be afraid of, and who to trust to protect them from that fear?

In short: false-flag attack. I’m not buying it, and I suspect that many others here aren’t buying it either.

Do you seen now how my point was ‘on-topic’, Dale? Given the serious doubt that this was an authentic ‘terrorist incident’, your specious question of ‘is the Dalai Lama evil?’ takes on a new significance.

No, the Dalai Lama is not evil, Dale…which is precisely why he makes such an excellent target for a false-flag attack.

  95. TripMaster Monkey says:

    Dale sez:

And, it looks like the fake bin Laden is at it again.

Well, let’s hope that they can fins a passable actor this time around. Their last two attempts were pretty laughable.

  99. barfly says:

So… what would your reaction be if I said that I hoped Mrs. Edwards cancer got markedly worse, and John Edwards had to drop out to take care of her?

    Comment by Dale — April 5, 2007 @ 10:22 am

Well, I wouldn’t wish cancer on anyone, but the Edwards are milking this for political gain, so I’m not feeling too supportive. On Huffingtonpost, there’s an article which states that they’re hitting up well-wishers for campaign donations. If true, that’s pretty low.

  100. barfly says:

so maybe you should be careful about posting a little rhyme about a heart attack for VP Cheney?

    Comment by Dale — April 5, 2007 @ 12:46 pm

If you believe in such things. Cheney, on the other hand, is one person I wish ill; his hands are stained with the blood of innocents, and he has besmirched America’s ideals and made them a mockery. America, and the world will be a better place without him.

  101. Dale says:

#95, you’re assuming that the theory that bin Laden is dead, and *the US* is putting out these tapes, is true. But that is only a theory put forth by a few individuals; one denied even as late as 09/06 by people as diverse as the CIA director, the Saudis, and the French. (google it).

But let’s assume for one moment that bin Laden IS dead. The article in question said “SECURITY surrounding the Dalai Lama has been tightened after reports of an attempt by the al-Qa’ida-linked terrorist organisation Lashkar-e-Toiba” (emphasis mine). Further down it says “Lashkar-e-Toiba is believed to be al-Qa’ida’s agent in South Asia and has been involved in virtually every major terrorist attack in India.” (emphasis mine).

And in my posts, I never said that bin Laden was targeting him… in fact only in #84 did I mention Al Qaeda… which should really have said Al-Qaeda-linked.

So the article is about Al-Qaeda-linked threats against the Dalai Lama.

Which means your inane supposition that bin Laden is dead is, well, inane.

That whole cognitive reasoning thing *is* pretty hard for you, isn’t it Hendler?

  102. Dale says:

#100 I hadn’t seen that, and hope it isn’t true. While I don’t agree with Mr. Edwards political views, I *do* hope that he isn’t the type to take advantage of his wifes’ illness, so I’ll reserve judgement unless there’s proof otherwise.

And btw, just so you know, I *DO NOT* wish anything bad on Mrs. Edwards. I just get angry when I see people of ANY political persuasion reviling in the sickness/death (or imagined death) of someone like I did in the two posts I mentioned. Yeah, call for his impeachment… yeah, call him a criminal, but to gleefully talk about his death? Ridiculous.

  103. Anacher Forester says:

“A newly formed consulting firm hired to account for more than $7.3 billion in Iraqi reconstruction money did not deliver a database that could help investigators track waste and fraud.”

In spite of being a “newly formed” company, RMI received a no-bid contract because they were the only ones who could do the job. Yeah, right. Where have we heard that before? RMI is run by a man named Robert Raggio. Could Mr. Raggio be a relative of Nevada Senate Majority Leader William Raggio (R) Reno? Or is he Lt. Gen. Robert “Bob” Raggio (Ret.) former commander, Aeronautical Systems Center, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio? Or could he be both?

(Note: “Wright-Patterson the largest of three product centers within Air Force Materiel Command. The center designs, develops and delivers dominant aerospace weapon systems and capabilities for U.S. Air Force, other U.S. military, allied and coalition-partner warfighters, in support of Air Force leadership priorities.”)

  104. TripMaster Monkey says:

    Dale sez:

you’re assuming that the theory that bin Laden is dead, and *the US* is putting out these tapes, is true.

Show me one verified communication from OBL since December of 2001. Just one.

Um, did you actually read the article you linked to, Dale?

    From the article:

In a recent document, Osama bin Laden denounced “pagan Buddhism” as part of his general attack on anything not Islamic.

The assassination threat picked up by Indian authorities is thought to be based on bin Laden’s denunciation and the extremist jihadi movement’s hatred for anything and anyone that is not Muslim.

You didn’t need to reference OBL…the article you cited did it for you.

There’s more to your post, but since it failed utterly to address my points, there’s no point in responding.

There is one other thing I would like to address, however:

That whole cognitive reasoning thing *is* pretty hard for you, isn’t it Hendler?

This is the second time (the second time I’ve noticed, at any rate) that you’ve referred to me as ‘Hendler’. Care to explain?

  108. Dale says:

  111. Dale says:

#111, I *did* respond to you, apparently it was deleted. Basically:

While bin Laden was mentioned, he was not the source of the threat… it was an Al-Qaeda-linked group. bin Laden being dead is only a theory, one which I don’t believe, I’m not about to waste my time trying to prove something to you. But whether he’s dead or alive, the main thrust of the article was an al Qaeda-linked group is the source of the threat.

As far hendler, I was under the impression that was your name, if I’m mistaken I apologize.

  113. TripMaster Monkey says:

    Dale sez:

While bin Laden was mentioned, he was not the source of the threat… it was an Al-Qaeda-linked group.

    Missing the point again, Dale…

I’ll repost the relevant passage from the article yet again.

This passage is clearly linking the activities of the al Qaeda-affiliated terrorist organization to a recent communication from OBL.

bin Laden being dead is only a theory, one which I don’t believe,

If you’re so skeptical, just find one authentic communication from OBL more recent than December of 2001. That’s all.

When you fail at that, you might then consider why the 2000 ‘fatty bin Laden’ and the 2004 ‘bin Laden’ from the video tapes are not the same person…and why neither of them is the authentic bin Laden.

I’m not about to waste my time trying to prove something to you.

Typical. I’ll take that as the capitulation it so obviously is.

But whether he’s dead or alive, the main thrust of the article was an al Qaeda-linked group is the source of the threat.

If you’re going to link to an article, Dale, you have to stand behind all of it, not just the bits and pieces convenient for you. The article was pretty darned clear on where the motivation of the “terrorists” came from. Given the evidence, it’s far more likely that this is just another false-flag operation, which brings us back to your original question.

    Is the Dalai Lama evil?

No, the Dalai Lama is not evil, Dale…which is precisely why he makes such an excellent target for a false-flag attack.

    Just one more thing:

As far hendler, I was under the impression that was your name, if I’m mistaken I apologize.

Now what would give you that ‘impression’, Dale?

  114. Dale says:

If you’re so skeptical, just find one authentic communication from OBL more recent than December of 2001. That’s all.

What… you want me to find something that’ll meet *your* standards for authenticity? Just who are you again?

Typical. I’ll take that as the capitulation it so obviously is.

Take it however you’d like. I’d have the same response if you asked for proof of any other wild conspiracy theory.

If you’re going to link to an article, Dale, you have to stand behind all of it, not just the bits and pieces convenient for you. The article was pretty darned clear on where the motivation of the “terrorists” came from.

I do stand behind all of it. The article only fails if you have the paranoid belief that the US is really the ones releasing videos of bin Laden.

Basically, I’m not going to waste the time trying to either prove or disprove any paranoid theories you may have. Should I try to disprove the boogeyman too? (cue the Bush-boogeyman comparisons)

  115. Dale says:

As far hendler, I was under the impression that was your name, if I’m mistaken I apologize.

    Re the observation:

The White House has unveiled a public Internet database that lists “all the pet spending projects lawmakers tucked in the federal budget for the 2004-05 fiscal year,” but does “not include the earmarks the president and his administration requested.”

hasn’t anyone noted that the FY2004-2005 period would be associated with the prior Publican-controlled Congress? So, has the White House decided to finally throw all of the surviving Publican Congressional incumbents under the bus? That’s what this database does. It definitively highlights the general corruption of the Publicans, even if it doesn’t address the earmarks the WH requested. How can anyone trust Publicans with the national Treasury ever again?

I’m all for Cheney as President.

They have already halfway destroyed the country. If Cheney was elected he would be sure to totally destroy it… in a short amount of time.

IMO, the destruction of the US is inevitable. That being the case, as far as I’m concerned, the quicker we get it over with, the better. Thereby we would at least have some impetus to rebuild America, as opposed to watching the slow painful, prolonged death, that we are now having to endure.

Anyway, Cheney has been the main architect of expanded Presidential powers. He has been planning this for several decades now. Anybody that thinks that he will relinquish these hard won powers to a Democratic President is a FOOL.

The Federal Reserve will most certainly drive the US into a full-blown depression by mid next year. This will serve as a pretext for them to suspend election and Cheney will then assume control. Good luck stopping them now that the Feds have control over State National Guards.

Cheney will most definitely become President/Emperor. I have absolutely no doubt about it… mark my words on it.
