“A suicide bomber driving a truck loaded with TNT and toxic chlorine gas crashed into a police checkpoint in western Ramadi on Friday, killing at least 27 people and wounding dozens, police in the Anbar provincial capital said.”
The media is to blame for our unwillingness to urge a surge. If they hadn’t try to make a fool out of the president with the Baker-Hamiliton Report (It’s Daddy’s friends to the rescue), then maybe the president would have followed their advice!
Sad news, but pertinent to our own safety.
Trains carrying Chlorine gas pass through American towns & cities everyday.
Does your local community have a Chlorine / toxic gas disaster readiness plan?
If so, do you know the protocol for dealing with such an event?
I know this isn’t political, but it’s very important. Not long ago a train derailed spilling chlorine gas in Minot, ND. Clear Channel had bought all the radio stations, which were on ‘automatic pilot’ late at night to save the corporation some money. Trouble is, emergency broadcasts on the local level never happened. Many people didn’t know what to do, & suffered severe health consequences.
Guess what? The railroad has fought tooth & nail against the lawsuit, denying any culpability. The Federal Appeals court has sided with the railroad.
So…never expect anyone but yourself to be prepared for disaster.
Right or wrong, corporate will always take the least expensive route.
Yea, chlorine is such a WMD we use it in our swimming pools and to bleach our clothes. It is about as common as the materials Timothy McVea used in OKC.
Did you get the Chlorine-as-WMD as a Rover/Limpball Talking Point or did you just make that up yourself?
All the ultra-radical right-winger neo-con regressives are now going to claim that using a chlorine tank as part of an IED suddenly means that iraq has chemical weapons!
Look out! Every pulic pool in the US harbors chemical weapons!
This is just too good for color TV! Come on, all you ultra-radical right-winger neo-con regressives, lets hear how an IED suddenly means WMD and Chemical Weapons over night!

#17 He is such an easy target…. kinda like Darth’s comment today (AFTER one of his own guys, Feith said it wasn’t true) about the ties between al-Queda and Sadam before we got there.
All these NeoCon Chickenhawks are so full of BS, they are turning brown and mooing!
More proof that right-wingers only spew talking points. The media is to blame for our unwillingness to urge a surge. So let me get this straight…….It’s the media’s fault for the skepticism regarding Bush’s escalation. It’s the media’s fault that the B-H report suggested diplomacy and redeployment over incresed troops, (they specifically addressed that point by the way) and it’s the media’s fault that Bush ignored the report entirely while simultaneously suggesting that he was open to following the recommendations of it before it was released.
I wonder why the RiechWingNutballs and ChristoFascistTerrorists LOVE the idea of a chlorine IED but HATE the talking about the ones made from ammonia and farm fertilizer?
Could it be that the deadly WMD made from common farming materials are the preferred method of ChristianTerrorists? I’m sure they don’t want to give away too many secrets here.
if there’s chlorine gas in Iraq now (I understand they’ve already determined it was something else), that doesn’t mean it was there in 2003… where’s it been sitting for four years? no doubt it would have slipped through the unprotected borders, the same one insurgents are crossing daily, in the time since… it’s not an exactly under-control situation over there…
Pete, if you mix chlorine bleach and Comet, you get chlorine gas. That’s why they warn you on the labels not to do that. Perhaps you don’t do the cleaning around your house? Or you don’t read the labels? I suggest you do, it could save your life.
So they didn’t have to import the gas! Anyone can make it out of two ingredients.
Nice try on the “insecure borders” meme. But not applicable here.
Will the US be struck with toxic bombs? Oh, then the “link” between Iraqi insurgents and a US domestic terrorist attack will be made. Of course, then we’ll have to institute martial law. For our own safety of course.
“if there’s chlorine gas in Iraq now (I understand they’ve already determined it was something else), that doesn’t mean it was there in 2003″
No, Pete, prior to 2003 they purified their water supply with camel manure.
We’ve brought them CIVILIZATION! And only at the cost of their nation, their culture (and a million dead citizens). At least Bushco can’t bring their deadly democracy to Hammurabi the Lawgiver– he’s been dead for 3,500 years, and as everyone knows, that’s more than half the time there has BEEN an Earth, so that’s a long time ago.
Sodium hypochlorite is just another form of chlorine, Pete, so no, they haven’t determined it’s ’something else.’ It’s the same thing, in a slightly different form, as required by water purification in various locations (like the United States), because it is easier to transport.
ThinkProgress, do you think you could NOT spread this bs about a ‘chlorine bomb’? The people DIE FROM THE EXPLOSION, NOT FROM CHLORINE GAS.
This kind of toxic result from a BOMB generally clears up after six hours or so. People generally do not die from it, if the airway is maintained while the swelling goes down.
Bushco LOVES that ThinkProgress is SO indiscriminating as to ‘catapult’ the propaganda for their sock puppet.
But Iraq is such a nice, safe place according to all those who stand to profit monetarily or politically. We’re not supposed to notice.
Now get in line and drink the nice koolaid we’ve prepared. It’s really good for you.
MORE AND MORE INNOCENTS DIE AS THECRAZED TERRORISTS ON BOTH SIDES, Iraq and Bushland Uber Allies PLAY THEIR SILLY GAMES OF “WHO CAN KILL THE MOST INNOCENT BYSTANDERS” AND GAIN INTERNATIONAL CONDEMNATION OR NOT!!!!!
No chemical weapons in Iraq, move on, nothing to see here.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:35 amWe will just add those 27 to Chimps account.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:36 amNot a Civil war, though?? As the “surge” progresses, so will the dead measure commensurately.

April 6th, 2007 at 11:49 amGet the US out of Iraq. NOW!
We’ve done enough damage to last several lifetimes. BushCo turned Iraq into a vast training ground for future US haters. S**t!
Oh, and to you ReichWingNut apologists who LOVE this occupation: got Osama?
April 6th, 2007 at 11:49 am1. Partick
You do know that the chlorine is there for water treatment right.
No I guess you wouldnt know that… or anything else. STFU already

April 6th, 2007 at 11:53 amIs Chimpy staying in Ramadi for Easter? Hope so.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:53 amThis proves that the surge is working. Since part of the attack was chlorine it doesn’t count as one of those bomb-a-day thingys.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:56 amCan anybody guess what 1,600 gallons of liquid chlorine can do when mixed with an equal amount of liquid ammonia?
If we really had a problem with terrorists in America, we would have found out by now.
Bush will veto the war spending bill because it includes ammounts to fund the recommendations of the 9/11 commission.

April 6th, 2007 at 11:59 amChlorine gas has been used as a weapon since WWI. Iraq and Iran both used it against each other in their 9 year war back in the 1980’s.
Nasty stuff….I causes a very painful death.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:59 amRingo, from the article, I think that was Sodium hypochlorite, not Chlorine gas.
Regardless, this is a horrible event. How “secure” can Iraq be if they can’t secure things like Chlorine gas?
April 6th, 2007 at 12:00 pmAt first I was worried about #10s ‘breaking story’, and then I saw who wrote it:

Note the massive fatalities from the chlorine gas. What’s that?

What’s that? Patrick1 is a TROLL? The rightwing media is spreading bs because they have nothing else?

It’s otherwise known as BLEACH.
Those damn Iraqi WMD scientists never rest!
April 6th, 2007 at 5:01 pmWhy are the Iraqi insurgents using Chlorine? Is it because they are waging chemical war now?
No. Chlorine is an oxidant. It is like fertilizer. They use it to increase the force of their explosives.
The deadly byproduct of gas is just a secondary result that they are obviously happy with.
