Breaking: Gonzales Counsel Monica Goodling Resigns»

Monica Goodling, counsel to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, has resigned, CNN reports.

goodling.jpg

UPDATE: Goodling’s letter to Gonzales, via ABC News, does not explain the reasons for her resignation:

I am hereby submitting my resignation to the Office of the Attorney General, effective April 7, 2007. It has been an honor to have served at the Department of Justice for the past five years. May God bless you richly as you continue your service to America.

UPDATE II: NBC’s Pete Williams: “It doesn’t really put her on any other [legal] footing, in terms of testimony. I mean, it makes it pretty clear that she won’t be represented in any way by the government, but she has retained private counsel, who have been quite muscular in their dealings with Congress, saying she’s simply not going to show up.”

UPDATE III: CNN’s report:

UPDATE IV: Sen. Schumer (D-NY) on Goodling’s resignation: “Attorney General Gonzales’ hold on the department gets more tenuous each day.”

UPDATE V: A spokesperson for the House Judiciary Committee told Raw Story that Chairman Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) “remains committed to questioning Monica Goodling, especially with this new development. Her involvement and general knowledge of what happened makes her a valuable piece to this puzzle.”

UPDATE VI: Goodling’s mother, Cindy Fitt of Osceola Mills, Pa., on her daughter’s resignation: “She told me I’m to say ‘no comment’ for everything.”

Hopefully, Congress won’t let her off the hook on testifying regardless.

How many assistants/counselors going over the cliff does it take to pull the top dog over, too?

    The witch hunt continues.

Nice work, Ms. Goodling. Excellent job doing the bidding of–and then protecting–your superiors. See you behind bars.

Looks like our little “in your face” sassy Bible gal is starting to weaken around the knees a bit. So hard when one’s delusions no longer do the trick………..

  12. whiteyfresh Says:

    So,everybody, which will it be?

    1) I need to spend more time with my family in these trying times

    or

    2) I’m a raging alcoholic, and shouldn’t be held responsible for my actions. I’m going into rehab on Monday.

  13. UncommonSense Says:

Well, it is Friday afternoon on a holiday weekend. What better time to announce it just in time for the widely-read Saturday edition of the New York Times? Huh.

  14. veritas Says:

At least one thing the Jaker-troll is accurate about - it is a “witch” hunt and Monica Goodling is the Chief of the Coven!

  15. Jake Says:

    Hey, whiteyfresh, how’s it hanging?

  16. Bob Says:

It’s good that there’s one less partisan hack in the Justice Dept., but there is still too much bs going on here and not enough truth being given.

  17. Jake Mayhoffer Says:

So what? Clinton’s appointees resigned, too.

  18. veritas Says:

Looks like the little twit Goodling is now running for cover. Of course, she will incriminate herself if she decides to tell the truth; of course, Gonzo and Bush were at the genesis of this…along with Chubette Rove….of course, they will drop like flies because there’s far too much criminally indicting evidence now coming from all over the country in the offices of the Federal prosecutors. Let it rain impeachment and indictments!! The “whistleblowers” are singing their tunes and the heat is being turned up on the Bushies! What goes around, comes around and they thought it wouldn’t bite them on the butt until they were out of office. Big mistake to overreach and fix the Ohio campaign (which BTW the ballots from that election in Ohio and all documents have been turned over for investigation with Bennett being ousted from office)…

  19. whiteyfresh Says:

    dandy like candy, Jake.

which one of my Goodling ‘talking points’ do you think it will be?

  20. Bob Says:

    3) It’s the Democrats fault.

  21. veritas Says:

I also heard today that Jeff Gannon/Guckert is singing his tune. Anyone else hear that?

  22. Devil's Advocate Says:

Gos must have spoken to her. It’s Good Friday after all.

At least she is finally off the taxpayer’s payroll.

I bet you anything that her attorneys are furiously negotiating some sort of immunity…

  23. david Says:

Goodling resigned to avoid public scrutiny, not because she’s the victim of a witchhunt. She hasn’t appeared before Congress. And you have to admit there is something perverse about someone in the DoJ invoking the 5th. She didn’t even want to talk behind closed doors. Something really rotten is going on at the DoJ.

  24. veritas Says:

Good Friend, Goodling! It’s a very good, Good Friday!! The GOPigs are dropping like flies!

  25. mongo Says:

    Yeah, sure, great.

    She had nothing to hide.

  26. Jake Says:

For the record, there is no such thing as a witch. Those accused of such — killed in Salam, Massachusetts — were innocent. As is Ms. Goodling. I mean, even her NAME sounds like an innocent lamb being led to slaughter.

    Happy Easter everyone!

    HE IS RISEN!

  27. whiteyfresh Says:

I don’t remember who it was, but remember when someone said it was creepy how you are so interested in my ‘dangly bits’(i believe that was the term)
funny how to you and me, it’s a bit of levity amongst all the flaming that goes on here, but to them, it’s sexual.
I mean NO OFFENSE to whoever said it, by the way

  35. VerbalKint Says:

Jake, are you going to continue to defend Goodling when she goes state’s evidence and sinks the Bush administration?

  36. veritas Says:

Just checked out C & L to see what they have on GoodyGoLightly Goodling….It’s Good-ling Good Friday, that for sure. Now let’s see them subpoena her and have her be in contempt of congress. Let the fun begin.

C & L used to be a good blog until the owner decided to play god and censor the comments because he had some “pet peeves” or believed he knew better than the people did. I checked one of their threads just now and there were only 3 bloggers on it. They used to be filled. That’s what censorship can do….prime example.

For some odd reason, John (C & L) couldn’t seem to bring himself to even fantasize about the possiblity (now a probability) that the official story of 911 was conflicting at best; totally innacurate at worst. Amazing how some folks who call themselves progressive, still can’t face their own demons or acknowledge the truth, as ugly and as heinous as it may be.

Siteowner’s comments tanked his blogsite….that’s evident now.

  39. veritas Says:

“He is risen” in this case, hopefully, means that the troll has risen from his chair and has decided that no one here is interested in dialoguing with him???? Incidentally, wasn’t it the Jake-ster who called this a “witch hunt”. I think his brain has been drained…time for another brain-washing supercharge I guess.

OMG - Jake I usually do not read your posts because frankly, you are an idiot. But I accidently read the one where you are comparing this woman to Jesus. This has reaffirmed my opinion of you as the biggest idiot to visit this site!!!

  45. david Says:

Jake, you don’t even remember what Jesus was accused of. Crack open your Bible, man, and read. Perhaps you’ll fall to your knees and beg forgiveness from the Lord for following Satan’s spawn.

  46. Jake Says:

I’m not George Burns. I am glad Ms. Goodling has retained private counsel, though, who have been “quite muscular” so far ; )

    Comment by Jacob Gnarley — April 6, 2007 @ 5:14 pm

Sorry, I would have answered sooner but I had to clean up the sodapop that squirted out of my nose.

    Actually no, he didn’t.

Jesus answered most of the questions posed to him, by both the Sanhedrin and by the Romans. The ONLY person he refused to talk to, was Herod, who had killed his elder cousin John, and to whom he had nothing but contempt. To Herod, he refused to speak. But it had nothing to do with the nature of the accusations being made to him.

    More to come….

  52. veritas Says:

#49 I thought Jake-off was Jesus? Could have fooled me! Hahahaha! He’s such a dweeb.

  53. Bob Says:

How can anyone say whether she was innocent or guilty since she won’t devulge anything? As it has been pointed out, the proper use of the 5th amendment is to keep yourself from legal jepordy. The 5th cannot be invoked based on paranoia, just as you cannot assume it’s a witch hunt just because it’s an investigation against your party affiliation.

  54. veritas Says:

If I were Goody Goodling, I’d move to the opposite end of the earth because she will not be able to move about publicly now without a good disguise.

  55. I WORFEUS Says:

I think its probably pretty clear what Goodling is hiding. There obviously was a much LARGER plan to fire US Attorney’s.

Probably a plan that she had some sort of managerial role over.

  56. Jake Says:

Isaiah 53:7, “He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth.”

Matthew 26:62-63, “The high priest stood up and said to Jesus, ‘Well, aren’t you going to answer these charges? What do you have to say for yourself?’ But Jesus remained silent.”

Matthew 27:12, “When the leading priests and other leaders made their accusations against him, Jesus remained silent.”

1 Peter 2:23, “Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously.”

  65. Bluedog49 Says:

Here’s one Jake the Joke evidently has forgotten as evidenced by his many exortations today:

“And when you pray, be not like the hypocrites, who affect to pray standing in the assemblies, and at the corners of the streets, that men may observe them. Indeed, I say to you, they have received their reward. But you, when you would pray, retire to your closet; and having shut the door, pray to your Father; and your Father, to whom, though he is unseen himself, nothing is secret, will recompense you.”

    — Matthew

  66. Jackie Rawlings Says:

The crimes in the Attorney Generals office are bigger then you might think.
It goes back to 2000. Yes after Ashcrof left Karl Rove took over and gave Gonzles the title only. That’s why Gonzo doesn’t know what was going on. Now to save Karl Rove, Gonzo will have to resign. Notice Libby had to leave to save Cheney and Rove. Look for more Bush loyal appointees to resign as we get closer to the truth. I wonder will Matt give a spin to this story as he did with Pelosi’s visit to Syria. Matt is working hard for the Bush money by spinning/lies/blame on the Today Show. No wonder NBC is losing money who wants to watch liars.

If she refuses to even show up (with counsel, of course), then throw her lying ass in jail. Talk about sending a message!

Now is the time for Congress to show some backbone. Bush and his cronies are just waiting for their opposition to blink. I hope, for everyone’s sake, that the investigative committee adopts a “take no prisoners” attitude, and brings out the big stick on this one.

  69. Bluedog49 Says:

And, according to his friend, Luke, Jesus repudiates modern conservatism with a ringing endorsement of progressive taxation:

“For everyone to whom much is given, of him shall much be required.” — Luke 12:48

    Woo hoo, He is risen!

  70. Jake Says:

For the record, I am not praying in public when I post Scripture to rebut the claim Jesus did not stay silent in the face of His accusors. If anyone (NOT on the “Ignore List”) has any questions about, please let me know.

    LoL.

First, I already debunked your other two scriptures. Jesus DID answer questions in both of your Matthew quotes, one in the preceding verse, and the other in the following verse.

As for your Isaiah verse, that is generally believed to reference Jesus being beaten and not crying out.

How on earth can any person, professing to be a Christian, condone such behavior?

I I do NOT buy the BS that she’s refusing to testify because she may make a mistake that could cause a false accusation. THAT IS COMPLETE AND UTTER BS Jake! That line of logic, for all practical purposes, destroys the validity of the entire US legal system.

Goodling’s resignation takes the spotlight off Cheney’s latest lies about Saddam Hussein and 9/11. Stealth Cheney presented his lies at a GOP gathering; did not provide evidence; but got his lies on the news cycles of all majhor media. Heck-of-a-job McCarthy (or was that Cheney?).

  108. AboveTheClouds Says:

Of course it’s possible. All the Christians that I have ever met are hypocrites. And I do mean ALL. I can’t count how many times I have been ripped off by doctors and others professing to be Christian. It is a cloak that many con artists love to hide behind. the

Anyway, what do you expect from followers of a religion that the Roman’s altered to suit their interests?

    Nicene Council anyone?

So few Christians are even aware enough of the history of their religion, and the Bible, to even realize that they are devoting their lives to following false and corrupt teachings.

    Comment by JPV — April 6, 2007 @ 5:36 pm

I am an “old time” Christian; that is, was raised in the church and truly believed (and still do) in the teachings of Christ. The first encounter with a so-called “Born-again” Christian was my father’s. He worked for a guy who bought the business, and one of his first acts was to stop paying the employer-guaranteed portion of medical insurance for an employee who had cancer. The insurance policy for that man was then cancelled. Then the guy fired the employee. When my dad raised objections, he was then fired as well. Some “Christian,” huh?

This kind of person, who likes to wrap themselves in the clothing of a spiritual teaching while acting in opposition to that teaching are the ones we have been warned about “Beware of ravening wolves who wrap themselves in sheep’s clothing; they will lead many astray.”

Osama and his followers are one example. Bush and those he surrounds himself with are another.

  131. veritas Says:

Since Goodling IS the centerpiece in the Attorney-firing scandal, what recourse does Congress have with regard to forcing her to provide information; i.e. as a public servant in her position with the citizens employing her, shouldn’t she be forced to provide information. Isn’t that the intentional “obstruction of justice”?? Actually, the 5th is taken so the individual will not incriminate themselves which, in itself, is an indication of Monica’s culpability in all of this. If one has nothing to hide, they testify. So, as it goes, Monica IS guilty by her own admission of taking the 5th.

However, I wish someone with a legal background would weigh in on what the potential remedies for getting this important testimony might be at this point? Surely, we have remedies in place for this type of situation where the DOJ is the one being investigated vs. being the ones called upon to do the investigating. What happens next?

What they mean by this obtuse statement is that they live in a state of grace and don’t really have to pay a lot of attention to those commandments since they have already accepted Jesus Christ as their personal savior. And, in general, christianity encourages amoral and immoral behavior because it provides a means by which someone can avoid consequences for those kinds of actions. When I was growing up, the Catholic girls in our city were always the most “fun.” I quickly learned that this was because the next morning, they were in confession.

    By the people …

I’ve been hearing it all my life, “… a government for the people, by the people …”, it’s right there in the Constitution.

I haven’t seen much yet. But I’ve heard it.

A vast majority of Americans have voiced their opinions. We know we’ve been lied to. We don’t like it. We especially don’t like it when it costs us fortune, honor and our children.

We also don’t like it when the so-called higher-ups of the leadership that we have just given that leadership to tells us they’re not concerned with holding those accountable for squandering said fortune, honor and the lives of are most precious commodity, our children. Just forget about all that. We have to go on with the business of governing.

Believe me, we REALLY don’t like this. Matter of fact we’ll put you right in with the squanders.

So, what is that “business of governing”? Going back to the Constitution, it’s “holding to the true principle of the law. ” What a beautiful thing “law”. Not fully absolute, but firm. Much like a parent governing a child. Allowing the child to grow, within certain guidelines.

The law has been broken BIG time. I need not go down the list.

Either you bring to justice those that have broken some of the most horrendous crimes against humanity accountable or we don’t have an America. There is no United States. There is no law. No shame. No nothing.

Impeach? Not only that, the perpetrators should be dragged before the World Court and judged if we are to even begin to regain any measure of honor.

You can’t refute lies if you won’t confront them.

People are dying in a foriegn land because of what people like Jake believe. At the end of the day, its a battle of ideals that precedes the battle of bullets and bombs. We lost the last battle of ideals, which is why the battle of bullets and bombs is currently taking place.
