Lauer On Pelosi Syria Visit: ‘Let’s Face It, A Lot Of People Think She Messed Up On This One’

This morning, NBC’s Today Show ran a biased segment casting doubt on Pelosi’s Syria trip. Every single question asked by anchor Matt Lauer was framed around conservative talking points. In his first question, Lauer claimed Pelosi has gotten off to a rough start because of criticisms from a baseless Washington Post editorial, Vice President Cheney, and the conservative editorial pages of the Wall Street Journal:

LAUER: Vice President Cheney called Nancy Pelosi’s trip to Syria “bad behavior,” a Washington Post editorial on Thursday called it “counter-productive and foolish,” and an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal this morning goes a step further and suggests her trip may actually have been a felony, that it may have violated something called the Logan Act. Tim, is this the way the Democrats wanted to get off the mark in terms of foreign affairs?

With his second question, Lauer asserted that “a lot of people think [Pelosi] messed up on this one,” and then asked “what’s the impact for the Democrats overall?” Lauer never mentioned the fact that five Republicans — Reps. Frank Wolf, Robert Aderholt, Joseph Pitts, David Hobson, and Darrell Issa — visited Syria this week.

To wrap up the segment, Lauer suggested that Pelosi may be “seen as usurping presidential power in designing and implementing foreign policy,” disregarding Rep. David Hobson’s (R-OH) comments that the Pelosi-led delegation “reinforced the administration’s positions.”

Watch the segment:

What the right-wing and the feckless media haven’t reported is that the American public supports giving diplomacy with Syria a chance. A December World Public Opinion poll found that 75 percent of Americans — including 72 percent of Republicans and 81 percent of Democrats — support the Iraq Study Group’s recommendation for direct engagement with Iran and Syria. Polls for the Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg and the Washington Post found similarly high levels of support for engagement.

Transcript:

LAUER: Vice President Cheney called Nancy Pelosi’s trip to Syria “bad behavior,” a Washington Post editorial on Thursday called it “counter-productive and foolish,” and op-ed in the Wall Street Journal this morning goes a step further and suggests her trip may actually have been a felony, that it may have violated something called the Logan Act. Tim, is this the way the Democrats wanted to get off the mark in terms of foreign affairs?

RUSSERT: No, they clearly wanted to distinguish themselves from the president’s policies, but you have to be careful, as Congressman Hamilton suggested. One ranking Democrat, Matt, said “we have an alternative Democratic foreign policy.” That is going to be very difficult to articulate and put into place when you don’t control the White House. On the other hand, Speaker Pelosi issued a statement last night on behalf of the bi-partisan delegation she is leading. Her delegation includes Republican congressmen. She is saying she has done nothing wrong or inconsistent with American foreign policy.

LAUER: Well, that’s their side of the story. However, if you look back at the mid-term elections, clearly some voters in this country were unhappy with the administration’s foreign policy, specifically in Iraq; it’s one of the reasons we think Democrats took control of Congress. But if the Democrats and Speaker Pelosi appear to be acting irresponsibly or incompetently, and let’s face it, a lot of people think she messed up on this one, what’s the impact for Democrats overall?

RUSSERT: It’s considerable. The Democrats have always had a difficulty being competitive with the Republicans in the public voter’s mind on national security and foreign policy issues. And if the people perceive missteps, it’s going to create and underscore that perceptual problem of Democrats.

LAUER: And let’s go back to the point you touched on a second ago. If it’s seen — what is the bigger and longer-term issue here if a political party is seen as usurping presidential power in designing and implementing foreign policy?

RUSSERT: As we learned in 1994, Matt, when Republicans took control of Congress with the Republican revolution and the Contract With America, people voted for change. But the voters are also willing to turn that around on its head, if they believe people have gone too far. That’s why this debate is so important.

  5. Chris says:

I agree that there is blatant hypocrisy, but you better get use to the fact that Nancy Pelosi is going to endure criticsm. Every speaker of the house since Foley has been scrutizined very carefully. She’s become the face of the Republican-to-Democratic power shift, and will have to weigh what she says and does, as it may be manipulated by the media.

I personally feel that if she’s going to make trips abroad, especially to volatile areas in the world, that she should include moderate Republicans in her efforts. I think the Dems need to make an attempt to focus on policy-solution in a bipartisan way, to prove that they can rise above the petty partisan politics of Cheney and Rove, as well as prove to Americans that they are competent (by soliciting solution ideas from both parties).

However, a declassified Pentagon report released Thursday said that interrogations of the deposed Iraqi leader and two of his former aides as well as seized Iraqi documents confirmed that the terrorist organization and the Saddam government were not working together before the invasion…

It’s all clear to me now–the failed Bush presidency is all due to Pelosi’s visit to the Middle East. Is it asking too much for Matt Lauer the sissy pants to simply bring up the fact that a republican delegation was in Syria the day before Pelosi? Why is that such an outrageous question to ask?

All I can do is shake my head in dismay. But I am raging inside.

  28. Ringo says:

Hamas and Islamic jihad think Nancy is doing a wonderful job:

Terrorists endorse Pelosi’s ‘good policy of dialogue’

One terror leader, Khaled Al-Batch, a militant and spokesman for Islamic Jihad, expressed hope Pelosi would continue winning elections, explaining the House speaker’s Damascus visit demonstrated she understands the Middle East.

Pelosi’s visit was opposed by President Bush, who called Syria a “state sponsor of terror.”

“Nancy Pelosi understands the area (Middle East) well, more than Bush and Dr. (Condoleezza) Rice,” said Al-Batch, speaking to WND from Gaza. “If the Democrats want to make negotiations with Syria, Hamas, and Hizbullah, this means the Democratic Party understands well what happens in this area and I think Pelosi will succeed. … I hope she wins the next elections.”

Islamic Jihad has carried out scores of shootings and rocket attacks, and, together with the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades terror group, has taken responsibility for every suicide bombing in Israel the past two years.

Ramadan Shallah, overall chief of Islamic Jihad, lives in Syria, as does Hamas chieftain Khaled Mashaal. Israel has accused the Syrian-based Hamas and Islamic Jihad leadership of ordering militants in the West Bank and Gaza Strip to carry out terror attacks.

Al-Batch expressed hope Pelosi and the Democratic Party will pressure Bush to create dialogue with Syria and Middle East “resistance movements” and prompt an American withdrawal from Iraq.

“Bush and Dr. Rice made so many mistakes in the Middle East. Just look at Palestinian clashes and Iraq. But I think some changes are happening for the Bush administration’s foreign policy because of the hand of Nancy Pelosi. I think the Democratic Party can do things the best. … Pelosi is going down a good road by this policy of dialogue,” he said.

‘It’s much better when you sit face to face’

Abu Abdullah, a leader of Hamas’ military wing in the Gaza Strip, said the willingness by some lawmakers to talk with Syria “is proof of the importance of the resistance against the US.

“The Americans know and understand they are losing in Iraq and the Middle East and that their only chance to survive is to reduce hostilities with Arab countries and with Islam. Islam is the new giant of the world,” he said.

  29. elemgee says:

You mean Matt Lauer actually had time to pretend to do a substantive interview before the “How to Decorate your Bedroom for Love” segment? Wow. He really has balls.

  30. veritas says:

#25 I wouldn’t give that type of blanket approval so quickly if I were you. Obviously, when one generalizes one loses credibility. There are plenty of americans (and in our highest offices, as we are seeing with all of the criminal investigations ongoing) who are, indeed, “bad guys” so please do not continue to generalize and, instead, qualify your blanket statements because they are not based on fact.

  31. Clyde the Ripper says:

Just give the lady credit for practicing. After all she will be President before the Fourth of July and she will have to do it for real.

  32. Patrick1 says:

Nancy Pelosi is to world diplomacy what Michael Jordan was to baseball: completely forgettable and unnecessary.

  33. veritas says:

Matt Lauer is a “lightweight” in the anchor field, that’s obvious. I’ll bet he even walks on his tiptoes when off camera.

  34. Zooey says:

Lauer shows his true colors: Lazy-assed hack.

Anyone know how to find Lazy Matt’s email address? I think he needs to be buried with emails demanding he report the full story, and apologize for f*cking it up the first time.

What’s wrong with his hair, anyway?

  35. veritas says:

Ringo: No one will even get to first base in terms of peace initiatives unless there is dialogue. It seems that we dialogue with “selected dictators” when oil or profit is concerned and shun others who have the balls to stand up to our hypocrisy. We also engage in trade activities with known communist countries; i.e., China who, BTW, owns over l/3 of this country right now….and growing.

  36. Raging Gurrl says:

Nancy did include Republicans in her efforts and it still doesn’t help – the MSM will attack her and give a pass to the Republicans every time.
Lauer has lost all credibility, Russert is known as a White House “Go-To” guy – they can count on him to get their message out.
So what is the solution? Restore balance in the MSM. Congress has to go on the offensive, not with this President, but in 2008 with a Dem in power. Go after the MSM, restore the fairness doctrine, break up the monopoly, be brutal – it’s got to be a bloodbath. Payback for what they’ve done to the Democrats over the last decade. Never let one side have a monopoly on our media again.

  38. GaPeach103 says:

I can only imagine the conversations Katie Couric and Matt Lauer had when they co-hosted the “Today” show. Both are obviously right wing nuts, take their marching orders from the right wing noise machine, and read word for word from the RNC talking points script! PumpkinHead is bossed, bought, and paid for, so quite naturally he would be called in to participate in this hatchet job. Timmeh, there is NO debate. Speaker Pelosi is properly carrying out her duties to determine first hand what exactly is going on in the Middle East, recipient of billions of American taxpayer dollars. As Orrin Hatch said of Press the Meat last Sunday, this is no more than a tempest in a coffee cup ~wink~.

Letters to NBC, “Today,” “Meet the Press,” Lauer, and Russert will be written this morning. In no way does this rise to the level of acceptable journalism. I will also write a letter to Speaker Pelosi letting her know how much I appreciate her diplomatic efforts and her moderate, mature response to the “huffing and puffing” of these repulsive Republicans.

  39. I WORFEUS says:

Nancy Pelosi has more balls than the entire white house put together! Nancy rocks and represents the american people’s mandate in everything she is doing. Kudos, Nancy! Keep the heat on and do whatever you want to do without intimidation. They may have intimidated Carter but they certainly will not intimidate you when you hold their almighty “purse strings”….hahahah! The one who holds the money wins in this country, as we all know.

  41. Democrat Soldier says:

Pres. Bush screwed up. Rather than exercise diplomacy and work with other nations, his “go it alone” approach has proven to be the biggest disaster since Pres. Reagan quadrupled the debt.

Speaker Pelosi has shown that diplomacy works when exercised by rational people, and has proven that clueless righties are traitors to the US Constitution.

  42. Republicans are the fear and smear party says:

That statement is so stupid on so many different levels it’s difficult to know where to begin.

He starts out by saying: “Let’s face it…” as if he’s a truth-teller and he’s about to state a fact that is obvious to everyone.

then: “…a lot of people…” Who are these imaginary people?

“…think she messed up”…”messed up”? what are we in high school?

“…on this one.” More juvenile drivel. This “one”?…trivializing an important mission into a pass at a football game?

This is insulting to the intelligence of all Americans and I can’t believe that NBC thinks we have dumbed down to their level.

  43. JesusChrist_GodofWAR says:

#31 – Just give the lady credit for practicing. After all she will be President before the Fourth of July and she will have to do it for real.

Don’t tease me. I wish it were to be. But I seriously doubt the power brokers in Washington will ever let that happen.

Unless, that is, a major piece of evidence revealed the truth behind the current administrations complicit actions in the days leading up to and including 9/11. Then we’d stand a good chance of having President Pelosi take her rightful place in US history.

  44. Jay Randal says:

The attack on Rep. Pelosi is a diversion from Sen. McCain’s criminal stunt in Iraq. He misused American troops to stage a photo-op in Baghdad which cost US taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars. Also it cost the lives of 21 Iraqi merchants who were murdered by insurgents afterwards.

  45. Bruce Gorton says:

Funny thing about this whole thing:

Some English soldiers get kidnapped, and Pelosi goes to visit Syria. The soldiers get released without any real pressure or compromises from the UK – but sources state that a certain amount of pressure came from Syria to release them (As per Sky News.)

Gee I wonder how much of a failure talking to Syria really was.

Oh sure, it didn’t cost a few billion dollars, or a few thousand lives, and it didn’t have the visceral effect of you know, screwing the world economy, but the fact that it has already had one possible positive spin-off must count something to the idiot right?

  46. Sam says:

Matt Lauer has been a slick salesman for the right wing for a LONG time. I stopped watching him a long time ago, he is just creepy and sneaky. I’d rather watch an openly divisive conservative on tv if I had to, because at least you know what you’re getting.

Lauer instead is Soft Propaganda. It’s propaganda without you feeling it’s there. The agenda is intermingled with entertainment, and the bias is wrapped around a lowered tone of voice, fake concern, set-up questions, and fake “surprise” at what guests say to him on the air. It’s the knive in the back instead of at your head. And that’s unsettling.

As far as Pelosi, she’s done nothing wrong, and she doesn’t need to bring “moderate republicans” as stage props with her wherever she goes. Our party just needs to bring their balls and step up to the challenge. And yes, do it in the face of a hostile media.

And let’s face it, even though Pelosi endures snide republican attacks because she is a democrat, and because she represents the post-election reality, she also endures it because she is a woman. You bet that the comments have a bite to them beyond what is afforded the usual male rival. When they say with a special growl that Pelosi should “stay home,” they mean stay in the kitchen. There’s an unusual dismissiveness to the tone of the comments.

You can expect the republicans to ride Pelosi for years to come. They don’t have an answer to the presidential election, so they are trying very hard to make Pelosi the face of the democratic party. And they know they own the media so they can make her into anything they want.

They have told their corporate press friends to smear Pelosi in revenge, but she is a hero for helping to prevent WWIII before Easter. Bush and Blair are criminals!

HOW BIG A PART DID OTHER COUNTRIES PLAY IN SECURING THE BRITONS’ FREEDOM?

Last week, Tony Blair phoned the Turkish Prime Minister and asked him to help. He did – letting the Iranians know they had overplayed their hand and needed to resolve the situation.

The Foreign Ministries of Qatar, Syria and Iraq sent the same message. This helped the pragmatists in the Iranian Foreign Ministry explain to the people higher up that the situation could end badly for Iran unless resolved quickly.

I knew it would be tough for the Dems. MSM is right-winged biased and right-winged financed. They are never going to let up on their attacks against Democrats and those American citizens who agree with what they are doing. A “liberally biased media”? I don’t think so! I am a liberal ( and a moderate liberal at that), but out of all the news broadcast on the three 24 hour cable news stations and the news and commentary on network TV, there is only one hour that relates to my views. Indeed, if there is any liberal bias in the MSM, it is biased against liberals. Keep those hearings going! It’s the only resource we have to uncover all that this administration has done to destroy America.

2007-04-05) — In the wake of recent tensions following House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s unauthorized visit with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, the White House announced today that it would attempt to “build a bridge” to Congressional Democrats by sending detained al Qaeda mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammad to conduct peace talks with Rep. Pelosi.

“The president believes that you have to engage your opponents,” according to Deputy White House Press Secretary Dana Perino. “Diplomacy requires a certain like-mindedness and ability to find common ground. Based on Nancy Pelosi’s eagerness to meet with Assad, a mere terror sponsor, the president figures that Khalid Sheikh Mohammad will be even more welcome.”

Mr. Bush, in a brief statement, said he’s “glad that relations with the Speaker would soon be headed in the right direction,” adding that the meeting with Mr. Mohammad will give Rep. Pelosi “an opportunity to wear some of the lovely scarves she bought at the mosque gift shop in Damascus, demonstrating her willing submission to a male-dominated culture.”

Rep. Pelosi, upon hearing from reporters of the president’s proposal, said, “At least he’s not sending Karl Rove or Dick Cheney.”

Oh, and Islamo-fascism is a contradiction in terms. Fascism is a secular state government, which though frequently using religion to disguise itself, is not religion based. What the so called “Islamo-Fascists” want is called theocracy, which is a state based on and around religious rule.

CNN did the same report during its morning talk show.

O’BRIEN: But the meeting with the Syrian president has sent the speaker down a rocky path of condemnation. Joining me live from our Washington bureau is our CNN special correspondent Frank Sesno. Frank, good to have you with us.

FRANK SESNO, CNN SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Miles.

O’BRIEN: The “Washington Post” yesterday, normally a friend of Speaker Pelosi said this. Ms Pelosi’s attempt to establish a shadow presidency is not only counterproductive, it’s foolish. And then listen to this. This is the vice president dialing into the Rush Limbaugh show.

    (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

DICK CHENEY, VICE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES: I think it is, in fact, bad behavior on her part. I wish she hadn’t done it, but she is the speaker of the House and, unfortunately, I think the various parties involved recognize she doesn’t speak for the United States in those circumstances. She doesn’t represent the administration.

    (END VIDEO CLIP)

O’BRIEN: So, bad behavior, foolish. Was it a bad idea to take the trip in the first place or was it the way she conducted herself during the trip?

SESNO: It may have been both. For one thing, I think it’s definitely thumb in the eye politics. She knew full well that she was doing this against what the administration wanted and though, congressional members all the time goes overseas and they do these fact-finding missions and they should, because they should know what is going on around the world, since they vote on how to spend money and how to conduct policy. She’s not just any old Congress person any more. She’s the speaker of the House. She’s third in line to the presidency. When she steps in front of a camera with an American ally or adversary, it has special meaning. So, that’s why this is such thin ice and it’s why, to some, it may have made her look like the prime minister when she’s really a congresswomen, Speaker of the House.

O’BRIEN: So if she was not the Speaker of the House, just a member of Congress, it would be different?

SESNO: I think so. And in fact, Assad has been meeting with all kind of American congressmen over this past week, some of them Republicans. He met with five Republicans, Frank Wolf, Republican from Virginia new full well that the administration didn’t want him going there and he said, I don’t care what the administration says and he went on and held his meetings. But he’s one of 435, it’s just different. It’s perceptual politics and it’s perceptual diplomacy and if Pelosi didn’t realize that before, she does now.

O’BRIEN: Let’s put this in the context of the lingering battle that exists on both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue now on the war in Iraq. And there’s a lot of talk right now about cutting off funding for the war effort. Do you get the sense that the Democrats, relatively newly emboldened, are overreaching a little bit?

SESNO: You know, whether they’re overreaching, many, many say that or whether they’re connecting with what the election was all about and trying to push the president into a corner, either way they’re playing their hand. And I think, Miles and this is very important, has a lot to do with the dynamic of what’s happening here in Washington. Take Pelosi’s visit to Syria and the Middle East, take the debates here and over funding and how the war is going to be fought and it boils down to one thing and that is that the president of the United States, at his end of Pennsylvania Avenue, is more isolated than he’s been, more on the defensive than he’s been and more appearing to be out of control, having lost control of events than I think we’ve seen in his term. That’s the political danger, certainly for him right now.

    O’BRIEN: Frank, thanks very much.

    SESNO: You bet.

Look, the entire “Today Show” is a silly excuse at entertainment disguised as news for a lazy American public who can watch for 10 minutes and then walk out the door feeling justified in calling themselves “informed.” It’s a big red lollipop: tastes great, but completely empty and ultimately it will rot your teeth. Evidence of Rohrabacher’s attempts to conduct his own foreign policy became public on April 10, 2001, not in the U.S., but in the Middle East. On that day, ignoring his own lack of official authority, Rohrabacher opened negotiations with the Taliban at the Sheraton Hotel in Doha, Qatar, ostensibly for a “Free Markets and Democracy” conference. There, Rohrabacher secretly met with Taliban Foreign Minister Mullah Wakil Ahmed Muttawakil, an advisor to Mullah Omar. …

I have noticed republicans do not engage in ‘fact’ conversation….their language is around appearances, snide remarks about the unhappiness Dems are experiencing: “See how they act!” I even heard Bill Wattenburg comment that Micheal Moore had bad breath…. Dear Madam Speaker:
I am writing to let you know that I support whole-heartedly your diplomatic trip to the Middle East. Despite the fact that many Americans have received and believed quite erroneous reports about your trip (due to the duplicitous reporting of the corporate media), I am well aware that you are patriotically serving this great country of ours and competently executing your constitutional duties as Speaker of the House of Representatives. If ever there was a time and a need for American-Middle Eastern diplomacy, that time is now and the need is urgent! Because of our foolish venture into Iraq, based on lies and subterfuge, we have created a “cauldron of chaos,” to quote our president. I regret that President Bush and Vice-President Cheney have unfairly, hypocritically, and maliciously issued negative statements about you, your mission, and your attire. Nevertheless, you continue to positively influence the people and leaders of the Middle East, their public policies, and their view of the United States. Your graciousness, moderate speech, and obvious respect for their customs have been a sight for sore eyes and a boon for our nation’s tattered image. What a public relations coup for you! As an African-American female, I am so proud of you, your efforts, and your hard working staff. Please have a safe trip home and a happy Easter.
    Sincerely,

  143. Joey SoCal says:

    (original included multiple links)

Hey Matt Lauer, and all of his Editors and Directors,

Are you familiar with the phrase lying by omission?

“In a statement issued by the U.S. Embassy in Damascus,” the three Republican congressmen visiting Syria “said they had talked about ‘ending support for Hezbollah and Hamas, recognizing Israel’s right to exist in peace and security, and ceasing interference in Lebanon.’ ‘We came because we believe there is an opportunity for dialogue,’ the statement said. ‘We are following in the lead of Ronald Reagan, who reached out to the Soviets during the Cold War,’ it added.” April 3, 2007

And when Tim Russert brings up the fact that there are Republican Congressmen in Syria as part of Nancy’s delegation, you blow it off instantaneously and move on to more hackery?!?! In fact 5 Republican Congressmen have visited Assad this week!!!

You state all of the criticisms of Nancy Pelosi, but leave out any essential context. News without context, or with beligerantly misleading context, is useless at best and virtually criminal at worst. There is a place for this form of hackery, it is Fox Gossip Channel and it’s affiliates. They more than fill the market’s need for hack ‘journalism’ and gossip. Consider the following in context of you’re assault on Speaker Pelosi:

FLASHBACK: Hastert Traveled Abroad, Told Foreign Leaders Not To Listen To Clinton

Newt Gingrich’s 1997 trip to China

What you and those like you are peddling, ’sir’, has nothing even remotely to do with journalism, or anything of any substance or value whatsoever. You’re doing nothing more than soapboxing you’re own pitiful personal feelings. NBC and others are foolish to dissolve the standards that constitute journalism, as it is a need, not like gossip and infotainment which are mere indulgences.

For all of this, you do not deserve the platform that you have.

    Sincerely and Flaming Mad,
    Joey
    LA area

This is the biggest ‘NO STORY’ of the year….

The media keeps dwelling on a such stupid story like this…the scarf Pelosi put on etc..etc…

She went to visit an old church built next to Ummayad Mosque..one of the main landmarks of ancient city of Damascus.

The Church and the Mosque existed side by side for centuries…

The media is making a big fuss out of nothing.

If Syria is sponsering terrorism…then why do we have diplomatic relationship with Syria. We have an embassy in Damascus, and visa versa.

Syrian troops ,when asked by Bush,SR. in 1991 war against Saddam, they fought side by side with Americans under US command with other Arab countries like Egypt who also participated in 1991 war of liberating Kuwait.

This is no story at all….

Patty is just pissed that a woman is running things in the House of Reps.

    Deal with it. Heh-heh.

So what do you think about the Repubs going to Syria, Pat?

  150. Bluedog49 says:

When I said drastic measures were needed, bullets were the farthest thing from my mind. No, I’m talking about re-regulating media by reinstituting legal “firewalls” between corporate boards and news operations. I’m talking about publically financing all federal elections so there isn’t so much money in them for media and there’s no reason for the corporate lobbyist to be in your representative’s office. Those are what I call “drastic measures.”

“One bullet – one whore” is what I call “murder.”

  151. Bluedog49 says:

tarazan: “This is no story at all….”

I totally agree that there are more important stories. I do think there is a message in this story. The message I get is that Nancy Pelosi is better at diplomacy than George W. Bush.

The only contribution Matt Lauer could make to the war effor is that of a human shield. The opportunistic weasel is Left one day….Right the next….needless to say, trust worthy he ain’t….one second thought, maybe he’s evolving…..

Lauer is a fool. He just lost all credibility.

  155. Bluedog49 says:

Let’s just keep in mind that when he was Speaker of the House, Newt Gingridge went to Isreal, met with conservatives there, and pronounced Jeruselem the capital of Israel, which was counter to the language the government was working out between Isreal and the Palestinians for a peace agreement at the time. I don’t remember a peep about this from the media.

  156. The Mahablog » Pelosi in Syria says:

  159. valiant venus says:

Dear TP – If 75% want to engage Syria – that doesn’t mean it SHOULD be Speakette Pelosi. Everyone worldwide knows she is in direct political opposition to WHATEVER George Bush favours. I thought it was especially touching to have the spokesperson for Islamic Jihad and AlAqsa praise the Speakett….

  160. valiant venus says:

BluePuppy – You didn’t hear a peeep – because we weren’t engaged in a war at the time…Annnd at that time BOTH Repubs and Dems supported Israel…..Do you always mix apples and oranges – - here in CA.we call that fruit salad, not any sort of credible comparison.

  161. valiant venus says:

Dear Faiz – i appreciate your position of defending “all things Progressive” and bashing “all things conservative”. May I compliment you on a job well done! I have taken a peek under different topic headings and have found little reaction from Think Progress on the release of the British Marines and Sailors. I was SHOCKED that they were treated differently than depicted by Iranian and Arab media…..

  162. Bluedog49 says:

VV: “You didn’t hear a peeep – because we weren’t engaged in a war at the time”

The peace accord between Israel and the Palestinians was an important part of Clinton’s foreign policy. The carefully chosen words our government was able to negotiate were important to both sides. By going to Isreal and making that pronouncement, Gingridge was undermining the foreign policy of the administration at the time.

We are not at war with Syria. Syria has cooperated with us with respect to finding al Qaeda and closing the border with Iraq. Our CIA has sent prisoners to Syria for “questioning.”

You didn’t hear a peep because, as usual, the media has a different set of rules for Dems than it does for Repubs. When Hastert went to Columbia and told the government there to bypass Clinton and work directly with congress on terrorists and drug trafficing, you didn’t hear a peep about that either. And, you didn’t hear any complaining when three repubs visited Syria just three weeks ago.

  163. Bluedog49 says:

VV: “Everyone worldwide knows she is in direct political opposition to WHATEVER George Bush favours.”

Yes! And, I suspect that they appreciate it.

  164. Com-n-sense says:

    By the people …

I’ve been hearing it all my life, “… a government for the people, by the people …”, it’s right there in the Constitution.

I haven’t seen much yet. But I’ve heard it.

A vast majority of Americans have voiced their opinions. We know we’ve been lied to. We don’t like it. We especially don’t like it when it costs us fortune, honor and our children.

We also don’t like it when the so-called higher-ups of the leadership that we have just given that leadership to tells us they’re not concerned with holding those accountable for squandering said fortune, honor and the lives of are most precious commodity, our children. Just forget about all that. We have to go on with the business of governing.

Believe me, we REALLY don’t like this. Matter of fact we’ll put you right in with the squanders.

So, what is that “business of governing”? Going back to the Constitution, it’s “holding to the true principle of the law. ” What a beautiful thing “law”. Not fully absolute, but firm. Much like a parent governing a child. Allowing the child to grow, within certain guidelines.

The law has been broken BIG time. I need not go down the list.

Either you bring to justice those that have broken some of the most horrendous crimes against humanity accountable or we don’t have an America. There is no United States. There is no law. No shame. No nothing.

Impeach? Not only that, the perpetrators should be dragged before the World Court and judged if we are to even begin to regain any measure of honor.

  165. valiant venus says:

“We are not at war with Syria. Syria has cooperated with us with respect to finding al Qaeda …”

No, BluePuppy, but we might as well be. Syria has allowed thousands of foreign fighters across the Iraqi border….but you knew that… Syria and Iran are behind Hezbollahs’ destabilization of Lebanon and are suspected to be behind the murder of the Lebanese PM Harrari – but you knew that…..Saddam’s stolen currency (some of which made it out of Iraq) went through Syria….but you knew that.

And as for the Repubs who visited Syria- they are not Speaker of the House, third in line to the president (OMG!) Regardless….THEY should NOT have gone to Syria unless the President asked them to go – otherwise, they should be ashamed of themselves.

  166. valiant venus says:

More irrelevant droppings from BluePuppy, “When Hastert went to Columbia and told the government there to bypass Clinton and work directly with congress on terrorists and drug trafficing, you didn’t hear a peep about that either.”

In which war was Colombia aiding our enemy?? FARC, a Marxist guerrilla organization has been threatening the Colombia/Venezuela border for years….but you knew that. Besides, you forget that Dems aren’t exactly big on “the war on drugs”. Hell, if the government could find a way to tax heroin, cocaine, marijuana and mexMeth, Dems would do it in a heartbeat and rejoice at having found a new revenue stream.

  167. Jeha says:

In the context of the middle east, this has nothing to do with right/left wind debate. She messed up, period.

We’re facing increased pressure as the Syrians try to leverage the effect of her visit in the local Lebanese scene. When the assassinations resume, what will Pelosi do?

  168. jpecci says:
