This morning, NBC’s Today Show ran a biased segment casting doubt on Pelosi’s Syria trip. Every single question asked by anchor Matt Lauer was framed around conservative talking points. In his first question, Lauer claimed Pelosi has gotten off to a rough start because of criticisms from a baseless Washington Post editorial, Vice President Cheney, and the conservative editorial pages of the Wall Street Journal:
LAUER: Vice President Cheney called Nancy Pelosi’s trip to Syria “bad behavior,” a Washington Post editorial on Thursday called it “counter-productive and foolish,” and an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal this morning goes a step further and suggests her trip may actually have been a felony, that it may have violated something called the Logan Act. Tim, is this the way the Democrats wanted to get off the mark in terms of foreign affairs?
With his second question, Lauer asserted that “a lot of people think [Pelosi] messed up on this one,” and then asked “what’s the impact for the Democrats overall?” Lauer never mentioned the fact that five Republicans — Reps. Frank Wolf, Robert Aderholt, Joseph Pitts, David Hobson, and Darrell Issa — visited Syria this week.
To wrap up the segment, Lauer suggested that Pelosi may be “seen as usurping presidential power in designing and implementing foreign policy,” disregarding Rep. David Hobson’s (R-OH) comments that the Pelosi-led delegation “reinforced the administration’s positions.”
Watch the segment:
What the right-wing and the feckless media haven’t reported is that the American public supports giving diplomacy with Syria a chance. A December World Public Opinion poll found that 75 percent of Americans — including 72 percent of Republicans and 81 percent of Democrats — support the Iraq Study Group’s recommendation for direct engagement with Iran and Syria. Polls for the Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg and the Washington Post found similarly high levels of support for engagement.
Transcript:
LAUER: Vice President Cheney called Nancy Pelosi’s trip to Syria “bad behavior,” a Washington Post editorial on Thursday called it “counter-productive and foolish,” and op-ed in the Wall Street Journal this morning goes a step further and suggests her trip may actually have been a felony, that it may have violated something called the Logan Act. Tim, is this the way the Democrats wanted to get off the mark in terms of foreign affairs?
RUSSERT: No, they clearly wanted to distinguish themselves from the president’s policies, but you have to be careful, as Congressman Hamilton suggested. One ranking Democrat, Matt, said “we have an alternative Democratic foreign policy.” That is going to be very difficult to articulate and put into place when you don’t control the White House. On the other hand, Speaker Pelosi issued a statement last night on behalf of the bi-partisan delegation she is leading. Her delegation includes Republican congressmen. She is saying she has done nothing wrong or inconsistent with American foreign policy.
LAUER: Well, that’s their side of the story. However, if you look back at the mid-term elections, clearly some voters in this country were unhappy with the administration’s foreign policy, specifically in Iraq; it’s one of the reasons we think Democrats took control of Congress. But if the Democrats and Speaker Pelosi appear to be acting irresponsibly or incompetently, and let’s face it, a lot of people think she messed up on this one, what’s the impact for Democrats overall?
RUSSERT: It’s considerable. The Democrats have always had a difficulty being competitive with the Republicans in the public voter’s mind on national security and foreign policy issues. And if the people perceive missteps, it’s going to create and underscore that perceptual problem of Democrats.
LAUER: And let’s go back to the point you touched on a second ago. If it’s seen — what is the bigger and longer-term issue here if a political party is seen as usurping presidential power in designing and implementing foreign policy?
RUSSERT: As we learned in 1994, Matt, when Republicans took control of Congress with the Republican revolution and the Contract With America, people voted for change. But the voters are also willing to turn that around on its head, if they believe people have gone too far. That’s why this debate is so important.
Matt Lauer is a right-winger?
That’s the funniest thing I’ve ever heard.
April 6th, 2007 at 10:58 amNancy “messed up” because she’s over there brokering peace.
BushCo DOES NOT want peace in Middle East.
ITMFAs now!!!
April 6th, 2007 at 10:59 amIf you can’t think for yourself, be objective and look at all sides, you must be in the MSM.
Lauer: Just another overpaid pretty-boy whore.
April 6th, 2007 at 10:59 amPelosi screwed up..which of course is in the tradition of Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton and other clueless lefties who believe that America is the bad guy.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:00 amI agree that there is blatant hypocrisy, but you better get use to the fact that Nancy Pelosi is going to endure criticsm. Every speaker of the house since Foley has been scrutizined very carefully. She’s become the face of the Republican-to-Democratic power shift, and will have to weigh what she says and does, as it may be manipulated by the media.
I personally feel that if she’s going to make trips abroad, especially to volatile areas in the world, that she should include moderate Republicans in her efforts. I think the Dems need to make an attempt to focus on policy-solution in a bipartisan way, to prove that they can rise above the petty partisan politics of Cheney and Rove, as well as prove to Americans that they are competent (by soliciting solution ideas from both parties).
April 6th, 2007 at 11:02 amalways humorous to see newsies with so many opinions that allow them to prove they are neither newsies, and a lack of basic smarts. he’s a today show kind of guy. must be boring as hell.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:02 am… and when with the ReichWingNuts tell Darth Cheney to STFU? He’s an embarrassment to our nation. Really, he is.
[from: http://news.yahoo.com/ s/ ap/ 20070406/ ap_on_go_ca_st_pe/ iraq_pentagon_intelligence ]
Vice President Dick Cheney repeated his assertions of al-Qaida links to Saddam Hussein’s Iraq on Thursday…
However, a declassified Pentagon report released Thursday said that interrogations of the deposed Iraqi leader and two of his former aides as well as seized Iraqi documents confirmed that the terrorist organization and the Saddam government were not working together before the invasion…
When is arrogant stupidity and willful lying an impeachable offense???
April 6th, 2007 at 11:03 amThere goes the “liberal” MSM again!
April 6th, 2007 at 11:04 amI.Can’t.Take.It.Anymore!
Pelosi going to Syria with a BIPARTISAN delegation=overreaching democrats.
3,200+American lives lost, (ten times that many wounded), who knows how many hundreds of thousand Iraqis killed, 1 trillion dollars and counting wasted & and a “Scandal Du Jour” administration=”Nothing to see here, move along!”
P.S. Won’t April 17th be fun!
April 6th, 2007 at 11:04 amI saw the picture of Nancy Pelosi sitting beside the chinless dictator of Syria and I must admit that for an old broad she has nice legs.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:06 amIt’s all clear to me now–the failed Bush presidency is all due to Pelosi’s visit to the Middle East. Is Cheney really upset because Pelosi’s delegation spoke to someone on his “we don’t like them” list? Too bad Cheney got his advice from clowns like Perle, Feith, and Kristol who ditched his ass the second things started going south on their “New American Century” failure.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:06 amThe Washington Post and NBC news fail to ignore the obvious and you cool aid drinkers can’t admit that Ms. Pelosi is in way over her head. You condemn conservatives for the same thing. You’re NEVER willing to admit when your side screws up.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:06 amjsut sent the same firmly stated email to NBC… 150 times :D
Spam the motherf*ckin media yall!
ITMFA!!!
April 6th, 2007 at 11:08 amPatty.
Hows that dick kissing going?
No America is not the bad guy, Bush and his supporters are! We got rid of a bunch of you last election, and the rate you idiots keep screwing up, we’ll OWN DC in 08.. Thanks for being a loser!
April 6th, 2007 at 11:08 amWhat an embarrassment! She had trouble pronouncing “Damascus”. I wished I had voted in Nov.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:09 amReichWingNuts and ChristoFascistTerrorists can’t stand the fact that Newt was launched from his post as Speaker during the time when they were trying to drive home the importance of fighting “immorality” in the WhiteHouse.
Of course Newt was up to his own ears in thighs at the time. Not that ReichWingNuts will consider the actions of one of their own “immoral”. Ever.
Nancy is doing what needs be done. Something ChristoFascistTerrorists had 6 years to work on and NEVER succeeded.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:09 amMy fellow Americans, all is a lost cause.
Since exposing the first lies of the Bush administration, all we’ve been able to do is gripe about it in a constant circle.
There has not been any reasonably honest debate in the media to constructively discuss the most pressing issues.
Is it asking too much for Matt Lauer the sissy pants to simply bring up the fact that a republican delegation was in Syria the day before Pelosi? Why is that such an outrageous question to ask?
All I can do is shake my head in dismay. But I am raging inside.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:09 amLauer is the one “messed up on this one”. Overwhelmingly, the people support what Pelosi is doing. After all, Jimmy Carter was forbidden to go there by this white house….what’s up with that?
April 6th, 2007 at 11:10 amAdd NBC to the whoring sycophantic mainstream media list!
April 6th, 2007 at 11:10 amNBC is simply another “propaganda machine”. Boycott it along with the others now.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:10 amI saw a picture of Darth Cheney sitting next to the Saudi Prince dictator of Arabia and I must admit that for an old fart he sure is well hung.
ITMFAs now!!!
April 6th, 2007 at 11:11 am(That’s his diaper……..)
April 6th, 2007 at 11:13 am#2 Do you really think that a self-professed “war president” would want peace? Do you really think that a VP who’s receiving pension funds from the no-bid contract Haliburton who have handily stolen taxpayer money want peace? It’s now unconscionable to believe that they would actually desire peace when we’ve been show who their “God” is - money and the lust for power!
There’s no way these thugs who are reaping the benefits of war profiteering want true peace! It’s the “illusion of peace” which they are attempting to craft….their administration is total illusion - smoke & mirrors, steal & conceal, dog ‘n pony show.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:13 amWe cannot permit the ChristoFascist Terrorists holding our highest offices to dominate the people any longer. We must hold them accountable for their wrongdoings. We must “out” them for what they are and all of their sycophantic, paid corporate whores.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:14 amPelosi screwed up..which of course is in the tradition of Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton and other clueless lefties who believe that America is the bad guy.
Comment by Patrickthedick — April 6, 2007 @ 11:00 am
We don’t believe America is the bad guy.
We just believe that you, and vermin like you, are the bad guys.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:15 amThere goes NBC’s rating down the toilet! They’ll soon suck Matt Lauer into professional obscurity as well. Once a newscaster engages in an outright lie, it’s curtains for him, as we all know. The people produce the ratings and the ratings will show NBC for what it is: an irrelevant mouthpiece of the right wing ChristoFascists who are the real “terrorists” in this country.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:16 amI saw a picture of Darth Cheney sitting next to the Saudi Prince dictator of Arabia and I must admit that for an old fart he sure is well hung.
That is his colostomy bag, Moran!

April 6th, 2007 at 11:16 amHamas and Islamic jihad think Nancy is doing a wonderful job:
Terrorists endorse Pelosi’s ‘good policy of dialogue’
April 6th, 2007 at 11:18 amYou mean Matt Lauer actually had time to pretend to do a substantive interview before the “How to Decorate your Bedroom for Love” segment? Wow. He really has balls.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:18 am#25 I wouldn’t give that type of blanket approval so quickly if I were you. Obviously, when one generalizes one loses credibility. There are plenty of americans (and in our highest offices, as we are seeing with all of the criminal investigations ongoing) who are, indeed, “bad guys” so please do not continue to generalize and, instead, qualify your blanket statements because they are not based on fact.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:18 amJust give the lady credit for practicing. After all she will be President before the Fourth of July and she will have to do it for real.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:19 amNancy Pelosi is to world diplomacy what Michael Jordan was to baseball: completely forgettable and unnecessary.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:19 amMatt Lauer is a “lightweight” in the anchor field, that’s obvious. I’ll bet he even walks on his tiptoes when off camera.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:19 amLauer shows his true colors: Lazy-assed hack.
Anyone know how to find Lazy Matt’s email address? I think he needs to be buried with emails demanding he report the full story, and apologize for f*cking it up the first time.
What’s wrong with his hair, anyway?
April 6th, 2007 at 11:21 amRingo: No one will even get to first base in terms of peace initiatives unless there is dialogue. It seems that we dialogue with “selected dictators” when oil or profit is concerned and shun others who have the balls to stand up to our hypocrisy. We also engage in trade activities with known communist countries; i.e., China who, BTW, owns over l/3 of this country right now….and growing.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:21 amNancy did include Republicans in her efforts and it still doesn’t help - the MSM will attack her and give a pass to the Republicans every time.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:22 amLauer has lost all credibility, Russert is known as a White House “Go-To” guy - they can count on him to get their message out.
So what is the solution? Restore balance in the MSM. Congress has to go on the offensive, not with this President, but in 2008 with a Dem in power. Go after the MSM, restore the fairness doctrine, break up the monopoly, be brutal - it’s got to be a bloodbath. Payback for what they’ve done to the Democrats over the last decade. Never let one side have a monopoly on our media again.
That’s no colostomy bag.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:22 amI can only imagine the conversations Katie Couric and Matt Lauer had when they co-hosted the “Today” show. Both are obviously right wing nuts, take their marching orders from the right wing noise machine, and read word for word from the RNC talking points script! PumpkinHead is bossed, bought, and paid for, so quite naturally he would be called in to participate in this hatchet job. Timmeh, there is NO debate. Speaker Pelosi is properly carrying out her duties to determine first hand what exactly is going on in the Middle East, recipient of billions of American taxpayer dollars. As Orrin Hatch said of Press the Meat last Sunday, this is no more than a tempest in a coffee cup ~wink~.
Letters to NBC, “Today,” “Meet the Press,” Lauer, and Russert will be written this morning. In no way does this rise to the level of acceptable journalism. I will also write a letter to Speaker Pelosi letting her know how much I appreciate her diplomatic efforts and her moderate, mature response to the “huffing and puffing” of these repulsive Republicans.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:22 amNancy Pelosi is to world diplomacy what Michael Jordan was to baseball: completely forgettable and unnecessary.
Comment by Patrick1 — April 6, 2007 @ 11:19 am
Yea?
So why don’t you forget her then?
April 6th, 2007 at 11:22 amNancy Pelosi has more balls than the entire white house put together! Nancy rocks and represents the american people’s mandate in everything she is doing. Kudos, Nancy! Keep the heat on and do whatever you want to do without intimidation. They may have intimidated Carter but they certainly will not intimidate you when you hold their almighty “purse strings”….hahahah! The one who holds the money wins in this country, as we all know.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:23 amPres. Bush screwed up. Rather than exercise diplomacy and work with other nations, his “go it alone” approach has proven to be the biggest disaster since Pres. Reagan quadrupled the debt.
Speaker Pelosi has shown that diplomacy works when exercised by rational people, and has proven that clueless righties are traitors to the US Constitution.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:23 amThat statement is so stupid on so many different levels it’s difficult to know where to begin.
He starts out by saying: “Let’s face it…” as if he’s a truth-teller and he’s about to state a fact that is obvious to everyone.
then: “…a lot of people…” Who are these imaginary people?
“…think she messed up”…”messed up”? what are we in high school?
“…on this one.” More juvenile drivel. This “one”?…trivializing an important mission into a pass at a football game?
This is insulting to the intelligence of all Americans and I can’t believe that NBC thinks we have dumbed down to their level.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:23 am#31 - Just give the lady credit for practicing. After all she will be President before the Fourth of July and she will have to do it for real.
Don’t tease me. I wish it were to be. But I seriously doubt the power brokers in Washington will ever let that happen.
Unless, that is, a major piece of evidence revealed the truth behind the current administrations complicit actions in the days leading up to and including 9/11. Then we’d stand a good chance of having President Pelosi take her rightful place in US history.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:24 amThe attack on Rep. Pelosi is a diversion from Sen. McCain’s criminal stunt in Iraq. He misused American troops to stage a photo-op in Baghdad which cost US taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars. Also it cost the lives of 21 Iraqi merchants who were murdered by insurgents afterwards.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:26 amFunny thing about this whole thing:
Some English soldiers get kidnapped, and Pelosi goes to visit Syria. The soldiers get released without any real pressure or compromises from the UK - but sources state that a certain amount of pressure came from Syria to release them (As per Sky News.)
Gee I wonder how much of a failure talking to Syria really was.
Oh sure, it didn’t cost a few billion dollars, or a few thousand lives, and it didn’t have the visceral effect of you know, screwing the world economy, but the fact that it has already had one possible positive spin-off must count something to the idiot right?
April 6th, 2007 at 11:26 amMatt Lauer has been a slick salesman for the right wing for a LONG time. I stopped watching him a long time ago, he is just creepy and sneaky. I’d rather watch an openly divisive conservative on tv if I had to, because at least you know what you’re getting.
Lauer instead is Soft Propaganda. It’s propaganda without you feeling it’s there. The agenda is intermingled with entertainment, and the bias is wrapped around a lowered tone of voice, fake concern, set-up questions, and fake “surprise” at what guests say to him on the air. It’s the knive in the back instead of at your head. And that’s unsettling.
As far as Pelosi, she’s done nothing wrong, and she doesn’t need to bring “moderate republicans” as stage props with her wherever she goes. Our party just needs to bring their balls and step up to the challenge. And yes, do it in the face of a hostile media.
And let’s face it, even though Pelosi endures snide republican attacks because she is a democrat, and because she represents the post-election reality, she also endures it because she is a woman. You bet that the comments have a bite to them beyond what is afforded the usual male rival. When they say with a special growl that Pelosi should “stay home,” they mean stay in the kitchen. There’s an unusual dismissiveness to the tone of the comments.
You can expect the republicans to ride Pelosi for years to come. They don’t have an answer to the presidential election, so they are trying very hard to make Pelosi the face of the democratic party. And they know they own the media so they can make her into anything they want.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:27 am#37 - That’s no colostomy bag.
No wonder his wife prefers women to Darth “Hung Like A Whale” Cheney (aka: her husband).
April 6th, 2007 at 11:27 amI expect this treatment from Phaux News. I can understand the big wigs at the WaPo skewing news to make Democrats Look bad. But honestly, when CNN’s Suzanne Malveaux & now NBC’s Lauer start swiftboating for rightwingers…..I’m pissed. I guess we all need to buy one share in each & then bitch like hell every stockholder meeting from now till whenever.
I am impressed with rightie trolls here. How they manage to cross a busy street without getting killed to still be alive at this point in time amazes me.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:27 amCourage would have been to go to Syria and openly ask Assad why he murdered the former Prime Minister of Lebanon? Why he is sending fighters into Iraq? Why is supporting Hezbollah and why as a Fascist thug he doesn’t “retire” to Saudi Arabia and let the Syrian people have freedom?
Did she say any of those things? Of course not. She has the courage of Neville Chamberlain.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:27 am#45 - Funny thing about this whole thing:
Some English soldiers get kidnapped, and Pelosi goes to visit Syria. The soldiers get released without any real pressure or compromises from the UK - but sources state that a certain amount of pressure came from Syria to release them (As per Sky News.)

EXCELLENT find. Wow!
Peace? Yes. That leads to lower profits for Halliburton and Bechtel. Sorry.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:28 am#4 thanks for the reference. It’s clear that Pelosi may accomplish something Bush and his whole cadre of cronies can’t accomplish - human diplomacy & tact. Bush should realize that in order to have legitimate discourse, one has to open one’s mouth and begin some form of dialogue. Of course, from his appalling speeches with a script and his loose-cannon responses when taking questions, I can see why dialogue would not be his preferred mode of communication.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:30 amDid the MSM give former Speaker Hastert this much shit when he went to the Middle East to attempt diplomacy? Sorry, I forgot–Hastert was busy in Washington pimping gay marriage and flag burning amendments, Terri Schiavo, and enabling Mark Foley. Pelosi is getting ready for the post-2008 era after the GOP is swept from office. More and more America is seeing the GOP has nothing for America but war, death, debt, and Karl Rove-style politics of division and lies.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:30 amPelosi shouldn’t have gone to Syria, because to Repub. plan of not talking to them has worked so well. So well in fact, there isn’t any support for the insurgency coming from Syria anymore?
April 6th, 2007 at 11:31 am#48 Corporations run the country in true fascism. Be not surprised when their owners/CEO’s prostitute themselves for a paycheck. But, really, why even tune them in when more timely news and certainly more factual news is available at least 18-24 hours earlier on the internet and these days very few people are not “online” so we will be seeing the collapse of the 24-hour news channels in the near future. They’re becoming the irrelevant albatross in the news game rapidly.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:32 am#52 FatassDenny was too busy with the teenage boys! That was his first priority - dipping his dingdong into the honey pot and covering the butts of his co-conspirators (Boehner, Foley, et al).

Maybe they’ll reprise their ridiculous segment “where in the world is Matt Lauer” because it will be so much more apropos now. Where in the world IS Matt Lauer. He’s certainly not in touch with reality OR the pulse of the american people.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:41 amPelosi’s trip to Syria helped to win the release of the 15 British hostages in Iran. That pissed off Bush, because he and Blair intended to bomb Iran today and hostage release destroyed their plan. They have told their corporate press friends to smear Pelosi in revenge, but she is a hero for helping to prevent WWIII before Easter. Bush and Blair are criminals!

April 6th, 2007 at 11:43 amOrwellian-speaking trolls and Bushevites adopt the reverse definition of all things….dimplomacy means surrender….wrong is right…..lies are truth. It’s comical to watch their predictable, inane reactions and responses on these threads. They’re the best case study for overt “brainwashing” that we will ever get to witness firsthand. They are never going to let up on their attacks against Democrats and those American citizens who agree with what they are doing. A “liberally biased media”? I don’t think so! I am a liberal ( and a moderate liberal at that), but out of all the news broadcast on the three 24 hour cable news stations and the news and commentary on network TV, there is only one hour that relates to my views. Indeed, if there is any liberal bias in the MSM, it is biased against liberals. Keep those hearings going! It’s the only resource we have to uncover all that this administration has done to destroy America.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:44 amYowch! Take a look at Glenn Greenwald’s post today The American media’s fringe ideological view of Pelosi’s trip. It fits nicely with this thread.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:44 am#69 - Check out the ones who are emasculated by Nancy Pelosi - both here on the threads and in the whore-mongering news. They’re outing themselves left and right and it’s a total hoot to see them for what they really are.
Point well taken. We’ve always known them to belong to the party of Smear and Fear.
They’re afraid of their own shadows.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:44 amIt’s always hilarious to read the comments that right-wingers post. Nothing of substance. Never addressing the facts of the issue. Just repeat the talking points dictated to them. I’ll give you an example:
Pelosi screwed up..which of course is in the tradition of Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton and other clueless lefties who believe that America is the bad guy. Comment by Patrick1 — April 6, 2007 @ 11:00 am
What kind of mindless dribble is this? One more time for the right-winged sheep that may have missed it………REPUBLICANS were in charge for 6 YEARS!!! What good have you done for the country? The last time I checked, things were pretty f*&ked up. It is in reality Bush and the Republican party that has made America the “bad guy”.
I suppose you’ll find some way of blaming Clinton for that as well. Some things (and people) will never change. (Bush)
April 6th, 2007 at 11:44 amAnd, they DARVO everything in the world of fact and truth:
D = Deny
A = Argue
R = Reverse
V = Victim (with)
O = Offender
Rove’s been inculcating DARVO tactics into the brainwashed empty head cylinders of the Reichwing and the Bushevite Trolls for years!
Check it out the next time a scandal surfaces….they’re “transparent” all right….transparently evil!
April 6th, 2007 at 11:45 amlauer’s not an ideologue. he’s an idiot chattermonkey who repeats whatever words are put in front of him — that typically eminate from the white house.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:47 amYou’re right, Matt Lauer is not a right-winger. He’s a metrosexual. And he believes whatever he believes his posse believes.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:47 am#73 You got that right. Mafouz Bin Laden (Osama’s bro) was George W. Bush’s first partner in Arbusto Energy….and then bailed him out of his Harken Energy stock. Mafouz is also the #5 money guy in AQ. The House of Bin Ladin and House of Bush regularly vacationed together as we all know.
Also, I applaud (as does a good portion of americans) Barak Obama for NOT taking money from corporations and special interest groups - unlike the others who are outwardly prostituting themselves to BIG Pharma, BIG Insurance, BIG oil, and the rest of the groups currently running this fascist government.
The change is coming…..and it may mean some hope for this country. Otherwise, the Bush Cabal will tank this country just like Bush did with all of his business endeavors….swiftly and totally.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:48 amTrizza: The trolls’ fascination with Clinton is interesting–perhaps they wish their man Bush had approval ratings even half of what Clinton’s were?
April 6th, 2007 at 11:48 am#77 The GOPigs (I love your new moniker for them!) will simply create another false war, that’s what they’ll do.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:49 amPhrases like “a lot of people think” are used by lazy, biased conservative journalists as a substitute for real data. I suspect they really believe that they know what a lot of people think, but it is based on their right-wing associates, their conservative neighbors, their barber, etc., all within their conservative bubble. They are out of touch and do not know they are out of touch, or to the extent that they do know, it is just fine with them because they think everyone outside their little circle is beneath them and that they are the real America.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:49 amI think your new moniker for the Rethugs should be one adopted immediately by everyone because it “says it all” and is easy to type, too.
GOPigs - gotta love it!
April 6th, 2007 at 11:50 am#88 This is called either pure propaganda or these people are on a very low level of “consciousness”; that is, the unconscious incompetent who live in a vacuum and believe that everyone thinks as they do.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:52 amUnconscious Incompetents simply “don’t know that they don’t know” - just like all of the trolls on these threads. They’ve got their empty heads so far up their anus’s that they don’t even see the light of day.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:53 am2007-04-05) — In the wake of recent tensions following House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s unauthorized visit with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, the White House announced today that it would attempt to “build a bridge†to Congressional Democrats by sending detained al Qaeda mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammad to conduct peace talks with Rep. Pelosi.
“The president believes that you have to engage your opponents,†according to Deputy White House Press Secretary Dana Perino. “Diplomacy requires a certain like-mindedness and ability to find common ground. Based on Nancy Pelosi’s eagerness to meet with Assad, a mere terror sponsor, the president figures that Khalid Sheikh Mohammad will be even more welcome.â€
Mr. Bush, in a brief statement, said he’s “glad that relations with the Speaker would soon be headed in the right direction,†adding that the meeting with Mr. Mohammad will give Rep. Pelosi “an opportunity to wear some of the lovely scarves she bought at the mosque gift shop in Damascus, demonstrating her willing submission to a male-dominated culture.â€
Rep. Pelosi, upon hearing from reporters of the president’s proposal, said, “At least he’s not sending Karl Rove or Dick Cheney.â€

April 6th, 2007 at 11:53 amthe hypocrisy of the American right.
Nothing you didn’t already know.
And lauer is a golfing buddy of GHWB. I think it was media matters that called him out on it. He then lied and said he had never golfed with GeorgeI. It took about 10 minutes for bloggers to find a couple of examples of matt on golf outings with GeorgeI. A right wing hac and a liar. Your illiberal media.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:55 amMatt’s performance piece is proof positive that things are changing and the powers that be are scared **itless. They can see the writing on the wall. Americans have had enough with this administration. So MSM is going to pull out all the stops.
I for one am overjoyed at this prospect. For when they do what they are just now beginning to do, more Americans will see them for who they are. Americans know slimy used car salesmen when they see them.
Keep it up Matt! More and more of the American public is waking up to the snake oil you’re peddling. Even conservatives with a conscience are starting to shake their heads. It’s like the scene in Oh Brother Where Art Thou when the racist remarks of a politician who thinks he’s calculated public opinion, goes over like a turd in a punchbowl.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:57 amMaybe pumpkinheads stupidity infected Lauer? Lauer is usually better than this.
April 6th, 2007 at 11:58 amPatrick1
If all the so called ‘Islamo-fascists’ want to do is talk, I don’t exactly see the problem here. Talk, is a lot cheaper then $2m missiles - and that is all they got in exchange for those hostages, that is, unless you are willing to admit that America’s government has started breaking the basic fundemental rules of international engagement that go back to before Genghis Khan and started kidnapping diplomats.
Oh, and Islamo-fascism is a contradiction in terms. Fascism is a secular state government, which though frequently using religion to disguise itself, is not religion based. What the so called “Islamo-Fascists” want is called theocracy, which is a state based on and around religious rule.
That you righties feel the need to make up new words because you don’t know the old one is not a sign of you being clever, it is just a sign that you should really start reading more books.

April 6th, 2007 at 12:05 pmThe irony of this is that for the most part, it seems like a lot of the Republican congressmen actually supported this. At least those that seem to have been quoted.

April 6th, 2007 at 12:38 pmCNN did the same report during its morning talk show.
O’BRIEN: But the meeting with the Syrian president has sent the speaker down a rocky path of condemnation. Joining me live from our Washington bureau is our CNN special correspondent Frank Sesno. Frank, good to have you with us.
FRANK SESNO, CNN SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Miles.
O’BRIEN: The “Washington Post” yesterday, normally a friend of Speaker Pelosi said this. Ms Pelosi’s attempt to establish a shadow presidency is not only counterproductive, it’s foolish. And then listen to this. This is the vice president dialing into the Rush Limbaugh show.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
DICK CHENEY, VICE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES: I think it is, in fact, bad behavior on her part. I wish she hadn’t done it, but she is the speaker of the House and, unfortunately, I think the various parties involved recognize she doesn’t speak for the United States in those circumstances. She doesn’t represent the administration.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
O’BRIEN: So, bad behavior, foolish. Was it a bad idea to take the trip in the first place or was it the way she conducted herself during the trip?
SESNO: It may have been both. For one thing, I think it’s definitely thumb in the eye politics. She knew full well that she was doing this against what the administration wanted and though, congressional members all the time goes overseas and they do these fact-finding missions and they should, because they should know what is going on around the world, since they vote on how to spend money and how to conduct policy. She’s not just any old Congress person any more. She’s the speaker of the House. She’s third in line to the presidency. When she steps in front of a camera with an American ally or adversary, it has special meaning. So, that’s why this is such thin ice and it’s why, to some, it may have made her look like the prime minister when she’s really a congresswomen, Speaker of the House.
O’BRIEN: So if she was not the Speaker of the House, just a member of Congress, it would be different?
SESNO: I think so. And in fact, Assad has been meeting with all kind of American congressmen over this past week, some of them Republicans. He met with five Republicans, Frank Wolf, Republican from Virginia new full well that the administration didn’t want him going there and he said, I don’t care what the administration says and he went on and held his meetings. But he’s one of 435, it’s just different. It’s perceptual politics and it’s perceptual diplomacy and if Pelosi didn’t realize that before, she does now.
O’BRIEN: Let’s put this in the context of the lingering battle that exists on both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue now on the war in Iraq. And there’s a lot of talk right now about cutting off funding for the war effort. Do you get the sense that the Democrats, relatively newly emboldened, are overreaching a little bit?
SESNO: You know, whether they’re overreaching, many, many say that or whether they’re connecting with what the election was all about and trying to push the president into a corner, either way they’re playing their hand. And I think, Miles and this is very important, has a lot to do with the dynamic of what’s happening here in Washington. Take Pelosi’s visit to Syria and the Middle East, take the debates here and over funding and how the war is going to be fought and it boils down to one thing and that is that the president of the United States, at his end of Pennsylvania Avenue, is more isolated than he’s been, more on the defensive than he’s been and more appearing to be out of control, having lost control of events than I think we’ve seen in his term. That’s the political danger, certainly for him right now.
O’BRIEN: Frank, thanks very much.
SESNO: You bet.

April 6th, 2007 at 12:49 pmGive me a break. I haven’t watched the “Today Show” since 2002, when Katie Couric interviewed Christy Todd Whitman about “green tips for the holidays!”–right after news of false Ground Zero air quality reports hit the blogs. The topic never came up in the interview–surprise, surprise.
Look, the entire “Today Show” is a silly excuse at entertainment disguised as news for a lazy American public who can watch for 10 minutes and then walk out the door feeling justified in calling themselves “informed.” It’s a big red lollipop: tastes great, but completely empty and ultimately it will rot your teeth. In a just world, Matt Lauer would stick to cooking segments and travel pieces while the real journalists did the heavy lifting. But this isn’t a just world, it’s a corporate world, where Lauer can pretend to be a newsman and Ameri-Bots are supposed to buy it. I ain’t buying.
April 6th, 2007 at 12:53 pmNancy really needs to hold some type of press event when she gets back and simply unload on the entire media whore thug machine….I mean, seriously. April 6th, 2007 at 12:55 pmIf any party should be questioned regarding national security, it should be the Republican Party. After all, it was REPUBLICANS that outed a CIA agent, NOT Democrats which threatened our national security. Get it right, for gods sake. The Democratic Party needs to keep reminding the voters that Republicans have jeopardized our national security by exposing an undercover CIA agent.
April 6th, 2007 at 12:58 pmi hope that everyone who left a comment here protesting Lauer’s smear piece on Pelosi also sent an email to NBC to complain. Nothing is going to change until we learn how to raise hell like the right-wingers. Take a couple of minutes to BITCH OUT NBC!!!!

April 6th, 2007 at 1:01 pmInstead of hammering away at Pelosi, how come no one in the msm ever complained about Congressman Dana Rohrabacher meeting with the Taliban just months before 9-11 (and still refuses to come clean what that was all about)?
Congressman Dana Rohrabacher’s absolutely crazy, quite possibly illegal back-channel chats with the villains of Sept. 11
April 6th, 2007 at 1:05 pmKatie was paid by the GOP while on NBC. Matt got mad because Katie got a bigger offer from CBS. Now he’s in the back pocket of the GOP. What he said made him look and sound stupid. Americans know Bush sent Republicans before Nancy’s visit to make sure the Syrian President didn’t tell her things Bush doesn’t want her to know. Look after her visit Issa was sent to try and get information. Matt is not dumb so we know he’s working for the White House. Bush/Cheney are scared that the President of Syria told Nancy about the deals Bush made to have prisoners sent to be tortured and the deals Cheney has made with taxpers money. The Syrian President is smart and knows what tricks the White House is pulling. Let’s say the Midddle East just played the White House for the fools they are. Matt is doing the spin/blame/lie for the White House. Wonder why NBC is losing money look at Matt lie.

April 6th, 2007 at 3:26 pmI have noticed republicans do not engage in ‘fact’ conversation….their language is around appearances, snide remarks about the unhappiness Dems are experiencing: “See how they act!” I even heard Bill Wattenburg comment that Micheal Moore had bad breath…. Republicans do not discuss the core issues but side track to put others on defense. sadly too many fall for this.
Matt Lauer … right-wing scum bucket. He would insert a thistle for “Katie’s” pay and feels the way she got it was not only by sticking her head in a bucket full of make-up after selective plastic surgery and highlighting dye jobs, but by making sure not to ask important questions of Republican shills on subjects the american public want to know about and framing questions about Democrats and their issues with statements stenciled out of Republican talkng point garbage she receives on idiot cards to practice from handed to her by the same MSM media executives who reside in the corporate right wing pocket. And he’s pretty much correct on that idea. Poor schmuck. What worries me is that our fascist corporate media will not allow Pelosi to have equal air time…..
April 6th, 2007 at 4:05 pmIt is getting pretty obvious as look who is STILL on Sunday TV news talk shows even tho Dems now have control of Congress.
The corporate owned media continues to provide us with one highly paid whore after another. If it’s not Susan Malveaux it’s Matt Lauer, that are prostituting themselves for their paycheck.
It would be justice if someday there was a reckoning with those who so easily sell out and they lost their careers and their reputations as they should.
April 6th, 2007 at 4:10 pmCopy of Letter Sent to Nancy Pelosi:
Dear Madam Speaker:
April 6th, 2007 at 4:11 pmI am writing to let you know that I support whole-heartedly your diplomatic trip to the Middle East. Despite the fact that many Americans have received and believed quite erroneous reports about your trip (due to the duplicitous reporting of the corporate media), I am well aware that you are patriotically serving this great country of ours and competently executing your constitutional duties as Speaker of the House of Representatives. If ever there was a time and a need for American-Middle Eastern diplomacy, that time is now and the need is urgent! Because of our foolish venture into Iraq, based on lies and subterfuge, we have created a “cauldron of chaos,” to quote our president. I regret that President Bush and Vice-President Cheney have unfairly, hypocritically, and maliciously issued negative statements about you, your mission, and your attire. Nevertheless, you continue to positively influence the people and leaders of the Middle East, their public policies, and their view of the United States. Your graciousness, moderate speech, and obvious respect for their customs have been a sight for sore eyes and a boon for our nation’s tattered image. What a public relations coup for you! As an African-American female, I am so proud of you, your efforts, and your hard working staff. Please have a safe trip home and a happy Easter.
Sincerely,
