Yesterday, the Washington Post reported on a declassified Pentagon Inspector General report which said that captured Iraqi documents and intelligence interrogations have “all confirmed” that Saddam was not directly cooperating with al Qaeda before the U.S. invasion of Iraq. The report provided further evidence of the manipulation of intelligence by the Bush administration and then-Undersecretary of Defense Doug Feith.
Feith has responded on his personal website, claiming the Pentagon Inspector General was “poorly informed and illogical.” Feith reacts to the claims that he exaggerated a relationship between Saddam and al Qaeda by hiding behind CIA Director George Tenet. Feith notes that Tenet wrote a letter to the Senate Intelligence Committee on Oct. 7, 2002 suggesting such a relationship.
But in his incoherent and rambling response, Feith acknowledges that the CIA largely tended to “deny or downplay” Iraq-al Qaeda connections before the war:
“Tenet’s account was influential in the Bush administration. Officials from every agency - including myself - accepted it. It had special credibility - at least as far as it went - because CIA and DIA analysts tended to deny or downplay information about Iraq-al Qaida connections. They favored a theory that the secular Baathists of the Saddam Hussein regime would not want links of any kind with the religious extremists of al Qaida. They would not acknowledge such links if they could possibly find a way to dismiss the underlying information. So the Tenet letter was seen as a grudging admission by those CIA and DIA analysts.”
The CIA reported in June 2002 that there were “no conclusive signs of cooperation on specific terrorist operations” between Iraq and al Qaeda. Why Tenet deviated from this analysis is not known. Recall, Tenet was awarded a medal of freedom by President Bush months later.
It’s ironic that Feith claims he was duped by Tenet’s letter. After all, Feith has been suggesting that the intelligence stovepipes he set up in the Defense Department were part of an effort to question the CIA’s judgments. It appears Feith only questioned the CIA when they were putting out analyses that didn’t match his imaginary theories of an al Qaeda-Iraq relationship.
Feith concludes his rebuttal by noting he is happy that the Pentagon IG report is declassified. He writes, “The public can now view the whole argument in all its naked incoherence.” Indeed.

Have no ‘faith’ in Doug.
April 7th, 2007 at 12:53 pmOne small correction, Tenet was awarded a “Presidential Medal of Freedom” NOT a “Congressional Medal of Honor”.
April 7th, 2007 at 12:53 pmDouglas Feith is staring into the yawning maw of a naked singularity.

How does that trickle of cold sweat running down your back feel?
Uh huh, naked incoherence…..
April 7th, 2007 at 1:09 pmCongress will tip toe, side step, sweep aside and dance around this issue, until finally it becomes the focus of the impeachment hearings.
Republicans say Bush has committed no crime.
But he has.
He committed a crime when he manipulated classified material to say something other than what it actually said, and then in presenting it to the American people as proof of why we should invade Iraq.
All the other stuff, Gonzales and the Attorney scandal, the cronisim, the scandals, are all peripheral.
This one thing, manipulating intelligence to trick the US into a war, will be the one that he gets impeached for.
Its the bitch of the bunch.

April 7th, 2007 at 1:30 pmRead the website; it’s hilarious. First he says that the IG was wrong in his assessment, then he criticizes Levin for taking the word “inappopriate” out of context from the report. In one case he slams the report, and in the other, Levin, for taking the report out of context. Either the report has validity, or it doesn’t. Feith is trying to say that the report is wrong, and even if it isn’t, Levin is taking it out of context.

April 7th, 2007 at 1:44 pm#9 You got it! The sign of strength is, indeed, the ability to take responsibility for EVERYTHING which fall within your purview and has your fingerprints on it. This country has always been respected because of this ability and strength; that is, until crooked Bush came along. He’s slimed our laws, spat in the face of our constitution, and continues to swagger around like some demented, schoolyard bully. Except this time, he’s not swaggering and bullying a foreign power; this time, he’s swaggering and bullying the people who employ him - the people who pay his salary - (I can’t say: the people who elected him because we KNOW, without a doubt now, that he stole both elections - Jebbie did his dirtywork along with Katherine Harris in Florida in 2000 - Bob Bennett and Ken Blackwell, along with the scheming Diebold did the dirtywork in Ohio).
Bush’s pissing contest with Congress who absolutely DO represent the will of the people as well as his reprehensible continuous bullying of the people from his personal “bully pulpit” has made him loathed by a majority of his own people, repudiated and repulsed in every foreign country like a pariah, and the worst president ever in american history.

I bought a new book on quotes last week. The guy who assembled them is hilarious - but also picked some very political ones (he’s written anti-Bush books as well). The guy who said that is the guy who founded the first version of a group that is basically “Jews for Atheism” (they don’t believe in god, but practice the rituals of the religion/ hertitage for their cultural sake). It seemed appropriate and applicable to any neocon. He’s just the first one TP posted about since I read the quote : ). They truly are a party of blame and weakness.
So, if the shoe fits - it’s only because they picked them out, bought them, wore them, and kicked the dog (aka American people) with them themselves… I’m just wondering when the dog is going to get angry enough to bite the shit our of the little boys kicking him… Odd what We the People are tolerating…

April 7th, 2007 at 2:01 pmDoug Feith just wrote the script that Bush/Cheney wanted written. Tenet was a wuss because he couldn’t or wouldn’t stand up. He let the CIA be corrupted and allowed a secret government arm to run the conspiracy. A boatload of folks are responsible for the worst political cabal in American History. Fold up this tent and start over.
April 7th, 2007 at 2:15 pm“Naked incoherence” pretty well describes the whole Neocon gang.
April 7th, 2007 at 2:16 pmDouglas Feith is a traitor. He works for a foreign power, Israel. Feith is not at all interested in the interests of the American people. He is an extreme rightwing Likudnik who is only interested in defending Israel. He lied about Iraq because the Israeli government told him to.
Feith is like Americans who supported Hitler in the 30’s. You know, people like Prescott Bush.
The sooner he is arrested and tried for treason, the better.
April 7th, 2007 at 2:35 pmhe is the norm. it is so obvious now that people that were only extreme could have a chance of surviving this admin. only people willing to commit crimes have managed to continue over time, and what seems to be an overwhelming percentage of these “its” due to war profit or religious motive. let us look at every one of the ones that are hanging on. the religious incompetents are in bushwa’s list, the war criminal/profiteers, are all in dickshot’s sphere. the common connector is so common that it is amazing. both groups act as though they are totally ignorant and that it doesn’t matter. they know they are wrong, or are obviously mentally ill people. there is no middle ground here. I never noticed it before. they just don’t care what they are told to say, or what they believe. Bolton tells John Stewart that history is totally wrong about Lincoln. he must know he is wrong or he is an idiot. cheney says al caca was saddam’s mens club all along, he seems smart enough to be able to label on this one, he is wrong and lying about it. Abu, seems to have only one qualification as an attorney, willingness to subvert justice for anyone that asks. Goodling, this is another example of the same format, without knowing much about her. she is either lying, and idiot, or ordered to do things she knows are illegal. she clearly knows the latter now, hence the resignation. could this be because reality and legal charges are the only thing that brings them out of the coma that they operate under by doing their majesty’s bidding? Feith, clearly an idiot that cares nothing about fact. he says things that are so clearly idiotic, he must be a star among these people. only indictment or loss of employment is going to make these sycophants realize that drugs wear off, and it really may be surprised about why it is going to prison. the only ones that seem to understand they are going to prison during of after the tenure are the dick and rover. miers is clearly a vegetable that has long since given up her identity to be the president’s lawwhore yesmouth. abu seems the same?
anyone follow me? I doubt my assumptions are unique, but there is clearly a pattern to any rational person’s continuing disbelief at what they are willing to say and do. there are those few things that we may be able to conclude about their assumptions. 1. that the news media does not matter, statements do not require any truth, ever. 2. they have some “protection” that means nothing else matters.
I am scared because it seems similar to a meat cult suicide club in many ways. I have never heard of grown people whose jobs are important to all people in the world, be so wacked out on religion, drugs or willing to abandon all logic to be rule by a madman, and bent on destroying another. even the comparison to adolf is starting to get strained. so, look for the end of the world club to act before they are taken away in chains. for those of us that are afraid of all religions for their stupidity, this is the first indicator that we are all screwed. when so many polls say that the people of this world think in increasing numbers, that god is all that is of value, and killing for it is just fine, you know where we are headed. this grand experiment is nearly over my fellow humanity. for we have learned nothing because of those that fear our doing so would compromise their ability to control us. I really think some would prefer the end of he world to an orange jumpsuit
it’s been a gas, hope the next dimension is fun.

April 7th, 2007 at 7:31 pmAs befits its terminal defense incompetence, the Left turns
into its knowingly fake headlines, like, “Pentagon Report says No Al Qaeda - Saddam Connection.”
“No conclusive signs” becomes no possibility. Cooperation “on specific terrorist operations” becomes any connection whatever.
Even though the Clinton administration shot at what it said were “indirect links between the [Sudanese WMD] facility and Bin Laden and the Iraqi chemical weapons program”, at Al Shifa in Sudan,
http://www.9-11commission.gov/ hearings/ hearing8/ cohen_statement.pdf#search=‘cohen%20prepared%20testimony’ Pages 9, 14
the Left is now irreversibly wedded to the historical fraud that there COULD BE NO SUCH LINKS and therefore, no threat to us. Because Bush also said there were.
Even though the 9/11 Commisioners themselves rebuked the LeftMedia headlines that falsely said the 9/11 Report showed no Saddam-Al Qaeda links, despite that it did undeniably show such links on pages 61, 116-118, the false headlines and the willful blindness and amnesia of its own contradictions still bellow from the Left’s dilapidated pipeorgans of anti-Bush propganda.

April 7th, 2007 at 9:17 pmNo Lefty will ever discuss the Al Shifa WMD conection between Saddam and Bin Laden.
It just never happens.
They can only curse at you on the way out the door rather than admit to what Clinton once proved to us and still testified to, along with Gore, Berger, Clarke, Tenet and Cohen, to the 9/11 Commission as late as 2004:
-Saddam’s uniquely identifiable VX nerve gas was present in the soil of the Bin Laden funded Al Shifa facility in Sudan.
-Saddams Chemical Weapons guru was picked up by the NSA in dozens of phone conversations with the Bin Laden funded Al Shifa facility.
-Saddams Chemical Weapons guru was visited in Baghdad by the head of the Bin Laden funded Al Shifa facility.
-A former Al Qaeda member later testified in the Clinton administration’s launched Al Qaeda trial that Al Qaeda was indeed trying to make VX nerve gas in Sudan at that time.
This testimony is CONTRABAND to the Jihad denying surrender artists of today’s self-destroyed Democratic Party.
April 7th, 2007 at 9:30 pmThe WMD are gone, Leaky — GONE!!
When we went into Iraq, on Bush’s assertion that the WMD were there, they did not exist.
Bush admits it now. The inspectors reported it. What the hell are you going on about?
It simply doesn’t matter if Saddam still had the WMD Reagan and Rummy sold him at the time Clinton was president. That was THEN.
On March 19, 2003, the WMD no longer existed — no reason for us to invade, other than the oil, of course. And the war profits, don’t forget about that.
So Leaky, what’s to discuss?
Run along….
April 7th, 2007 at 9:46 pmYes of course. Clinton SAID the WMDs were in Iraq when he bombed Iraqi WMD Facilities in 1998 in Desert Fox and in Sudan when he bombed Al Shifa in 1998.
But after Clinton let Saddam kick out the UN inspectors that same year without following up with his theeatened regime change he had mouthed off about, Saddam took the opportunity, while totally unobserved, inspected or harrassed, to voluntarilty become a nice guy and destroy them all.
No matter that Clinton told the Portugese Prime Minister he was certain Saddam still had them up to the time of Bush’s invasion.
No matter that the entire Democartic party and world intelligence community was all insisting he had them.
No matter that Saddams generals, a UNESCO award winning Syrian journalist and even David Kay said that some WMDs went to Syria.
No matter that Clinton PROVED his VX nerve gas got to one of Bin Ladens Sudan facilities and that bombing one did nothing to disrupt the others.
None of those facts matter to raise a concern over more WMD-armed 9/11’s the Jihad has promised us when you have a Liberal’s faith in humanity that makes you just KNOW that Saddam was too nice a guy to keep those WMDs he sacrificed his people’s lives to acquire.
April 7th, 2007 at 10:16 pm#63 Rufus…Baaaaaaahhhhhh…Clinton…Bahhhhhhhhh. Why can’t you defend your president without bringing up Clinton?
April 7th, 2007 at 10:28 pm#63 By the way, Rufus. David Kay was probably wrong but he said that those WMD went to Syria BEFORE your idiot king invaded. So, even you admit there were no WMD in Iraq. Is that right?
April 7th, 2007 at 10:30 pmBringing up Clinton when Clinton PROVED Bush’s case is of course, not allowed under Lefty Rules of Politically Expedient Amnesia.
And playing games with how much WMD is OK for a mass murdering outlaw meglomaniac and terror host to be allowed to keep after promising to give them up after one war, and when its too late or too early to invade is all pathetic when you have said only that we should never invade and that there could not possibly be a threat to us no matter who was proven or suspected to be getting Saddams Clinton-verified WMDs.
The Lefty plan of defense inaction is simply too disgraced by Bush’s victories over the Taliban and Saddam terror host regimes and over Khadaffis entire WMD program and much of Al Qaeda to allow for open admissions that all your America-blaming positions only served to reward and strengthen our deadliest enemies.
Just like Lefties still do.
April 7th, 2007 at 10:46 pm#66 No, Roofies, Clinton didn’t prove Bush’s case. Bush attacked Iraq. Not Clinton. Don’t you understand that? Bush is the only one that felt that an invasion was the best course. And he (and you) were clearly and disasterously wrong.
April 7th, 2007 at 10:50 pm#66 Wow, are you for real Roofies? Bush’s victories over the Taliban and Saddam terror host regimes (sic) and over Khadaffies (sic) entire WMD program and run on and run on.
1. The Taliban is alive and kicking because Bush could never finish a job.
2. Yeah, we hung Saddam…and what exactly did that get us and how much has it and will it cost us?
3. Are you stoned? Libya’s WMDs? Are you stupid or just brainwashed. It is nice that you think that appeasing Khadaffi was a good thing. Stupid, but so sweet.
4. al Qaeda is stronger than ever. They are getting plenty of recruits because of your illegal invasion.
5. Der.
April 7th, 2007 at 10:54 pmClinton made the case for regime change in Iraq even more eloquently than Bush. He signed regime change policy into law. He proved that Saddams VX nerve gas ended up in Bin Ladens funded Sudan facilities - a worst case scenario for the U.S.
http://www.cnn.com/ WORLD/ africa/ 9809/ 01/ sudan.plant/
But Clinton had more plans for goings on under his desk than against the terrorists he knew were already behind attacks on us and their most flagarant of terror hosts, Saddam.
He left it to Bush to effect the regime change Clinton only crowed about.
And because Bush acted where Clinton knew he should, but would not, we have him to thank for removing the Saddam side of the Saddam - Bin Laden WMD connection Clinton proved but ran from opposing effectively.
And today, Al Qaeda must still content itself with killing only dozens at a time with conventional explosives. Thanks to Bush it has not perfected the ability, Clinton was willing to let them acquire, to kill thousands at a time with Saddams VX.
April 7th, 2007 at 11:02 pm#69 Um, you ignored ALL of my points and the most egregious was that Bush illegally invaded Iraq, not Clinton.
April 7th, 2007 at 11:07 pm#69 By the way…
And today, Al Qaeda must still content itself with killing only dozens at a time with conventional explosives.
You are one of those jackoffs that are ok with our soldiers being targets…”We are fighting them over there so we don’t have to fight them over here”. Way to support the troops. Last I knew soldier did NOT mean magnet for terrorists. Coward.
April 7th, 2007 at 11:11 pm1. The Taliban once ruled Afghanistan with a cruel, iron fist and openly hosted our terrorist enemies. Bush has relgeated them to a guerilla force capable of starting but not ending skirmishes in the middle of nowehere, where they hide in spder holes.
No way Gore or any limp wristed Dem would have hardballed Mushariff into allowing US forces to attack the Taliban through his previously pro-Taliban country and to help us round up the likes of Khalid Sheik Muhammed and many other Al Qaeda kingpins.
2. Elminating Saddams terror hosting regime sent a message to the pro-JIhad world that to harbor our enemies is to seal your own doom.
3. Khadaffi, an American killing terrorist, never agreed to surrender his WMDs until 5 days after Saddam was captured. He told Berlusconi of Italy that it was because of seeing what Bush did to his pal Saddam.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/ news/ main.jhtml?xml=/ news/ 2003/ 09/ 04/ wun04.xml
4. Al Qaeda is still begging for truce, knowing it has lost in Iraq. Bin Laden begged Bush for truce in more than one tape. http://www.cnn.com/ 2006/ US/ 01/ 19/ binladen.tape/ index.html So has Zawahri and Zarqawi. Here was Bush’s answer to Zarqawi. http://www.cnn.com/ 2006/ WORLD/ meast/ 06/ 08/ iraq.al.zarqawi/ His successor was recently rudely abducted to a place he had probably been hoping not to visit. Can you name his successor who now heads the forces you now consider to be even more powerful, who can’t even stop elections, let alone a new Constituional government from continuing? I didn’t think so.
The only force that can win them Iraq now is the Democratic Party.
And since all three branches of the US government regard and have deemed the Iraq invasion as lawful, you must share with us the name of the branch you have started.

April 7th, 2007 at 11:20 pmI have no problem with our brave volunteer forces willingly fighting our terror hosting enemeis to stop their killing an exponentially larger number than the 3,000 or so we have lost in our sweeping and historic victories over those brutal forces. Saddam killed over a Million before he was stopped. With his VX nerve gas he could have kiled many multiples of that through his terror clients taking them to our shores.
As for myself, I volunteered in 1980, when I was financially quite comfortable but when it looked like force might well be needed in Iran to free our people there. Carter didn’t utilize my willing manpower. But I belonged to the Army. had they opted to go there, as I had wanted to do.
But you must have served even more gallantly to be so sure of my own patriotic inadequacy.

April 7th, 2007 at 11:29 pm#74 Saddam killed over a million? Does that include Iranians?

Comment by JPark
I’m gonna make a giant leap here, JPark, and say YES.
April 7th, 2007 at 11:42 pmBy the way, Roofies…Reagan and Bush KNEW Saddam had WMD because they gave him the Sarin. THEY didn’t illegally invade Iraq, either.
April 7th, 2007 at 11:45 pm1. We ousted an entire government of a very very difficult to fight in country from Taliban rule. So they are killing some people in skirmishes bewteen the times they are being mopped up by NATO foces. You want to go over there and up the ante with your humanitarian ass? I dodn’t think so.
Did you care that much about a Million Iraqis being slaughtered by Saddam when it was Bush proposing to stop it? I thought not.
2. The Free Iraqi government tallies over a Million civilians missing from the Saddam regime. The Iraq invasion caused the deaths of just over 50K by the best account, and most of those were from the insurgent bombing schools and mosques. I know Libs don’t do math. But think of all the Global Warming Saddams extra decomposing corpses caused.
In fact here are some more reasons why Libs ought to finally get mad at Saddam:
-His gassing of the Kurds endangered the breeding grounds of the Snuffle Snouted Beetle Banger.
-He built his childrens prisons on fargile wetlands.
-He filled a Million Plus mass graves withut a single Environmental Impact Report.
3. American-killer Khadaffi, once owner of the largest chemical weapons factories in the devleoping world, as well as huge bio and even nuike arsenals and missiles to deliver them all, is now a defnaged, disarmed pansy, making appearances in his queer garb to the ovations of the Liberal university circuit across the U.S.
4. Read it and weep. Bin Laden begged Bush for truce. http://www.cnn.com/ 2006/ US/ 01/ 19/ binladen.tape/ index.html Zarqawi begged Bush for truce. (Before being ground up for falafel.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zarqawi Zawahri begged Bush for truce. http://english.aljazeera.net/ English/ archive/ archive?ArchiveId=13964

April 8th, 2007 at 1:52 amI got the distinct impression when you were posting as Mighty Aphrodite/Hypocrite that Israel was about the only foreign country you liked, so why are you now dumping on the Clintons and Kerry for supporting it?
“Everyone knows that the United States has lost the war in Iraq. The politics of Washington, DC today is simply a series of maneuvers between Republicans and Democrats to position themselves so that the other party pays the electoral price for the fiasco.”

April 8th, 2007 at 8:52 amOnly the most silly brand of tube steak would believe for one second we invaded Iraq to “liberate” it. This is only the latest in a string of excuses that turned out to be lies. Iraq will NEVER be free until we’ve pumped out all its oil.
It’s obvious that the 600,000 Iraqis who’ve died since Bush diverted our military from capturing the perpetrator of 9/11 don’t matter to these radicals one bit. The pure and simple fact is that right wingers think Iraqis are subhuman chattel that just happen to live on our God-given oil.
And yes, some might be bone-deep gullible enough to believe everything their daddy figure Cheney tells them. After all, their lives are guided by a great big invisible man who lives up in the sky who has nothing better to do than watch their every move so he can decide whether to torture the crap out of them for eternity after they’ve died, so believing that Bush converses with Jesus is only a hop, skip and jump from that. But hey, zipperheads, you don’t see these “liberators” rushing into Darfur, do you? It’s a pathetic, sick joke, and you’re the butt.
It is entertaining to watch these pickle-suckers flail about senselssly in their goofy self-righteousness now that they are in such a vanishingly small minority as to be insignificant in charting our future course. Yes, to be sure, they have all the mainstream media outlets shoveling their propaganda at us, but about 70% of Americans are hip to the deception.
It’s over, zipperheads, it’s over.

April 8th, 2007 at 2:21 pmYou want to know why, BM? Because the fraud was being committed for Israel, with the full participation of Ariel Sharon’s government.
It is politically just about impossible to address this matter, because the Israel lobby controls both major political parties in this country.
Robert Dreyfuss explains all this in a July 2003 article for The Nation called “More Missing Intelligenceâ€:
“According to the former official, also feeding information to the Office of Special Plans was a secret, rump unit established last year in the office of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon of Israel….â€
http://www.thenation.com/doc/20030707/dreyfuss ….
So now the mass media is finally catching up with the 10/04 edition of Mother Jones-whcih described in detail Feith’s and the other neocons’ criminal plotting and shenanigans. It is titled “the Irag lie factory.â€
Bush and Cheney URGENTLY need to be impeached and prosecuted fully as the war criminals they are. ..A fine article, but–instead of saying “…a war costing tens of thousands of lives and an expected $1 trillion that served no valid national security purposeâ€, I would say a war costing 658,000 lives (excellent Johns Hopkins/Lancet study covering up to July 2006, plus number of US military) and an expected $2.2 trillion (excellent Stiglitz-Bilmes study that they now consider too low) that harmed our national security (16 intelligence agencies of the US plus every study in the world).
It is far more reasonable to go with what the Downing Street Memo (and all other evidence) shows–that we wanted to take Iraq and any intelligence would be made up later, than to bend over backwards trying to explain why all the intelligence was so “flawedâ€. Weren’t the reasons for the last 100 US invasions of other countries later found to not be true. I like books by William Blum and Stephen Kinzer.
April 8th, 2007 at 3:40 pmTrippin #89: I don’t know if Rufus has given up on trolling here and distracting the conversation with his useless “anti-liberal” drivel, so I’ll step in and let you know what he would say about those 600,000 dead (and 2 million displaced) Iraqis — they were all part of the terror network and their death and displacement a necessary part of the “war on terror.”
That’s right, Iron-handed Saddam had a few MILLION fundamentalist Islamic terrorists in his secular country. Amazing.
I wasted ten minutes reading this thread and realized that better moderation of our boards is necessary. Trolls such as Rufus need to be called on their BS and banned if they can’t deliver facts. Our energies are too limited to waste them wallowing with idiots and our discussions are distracted by these battles with pigs.
