Spanish-language papers want Gonzales to resign.

The daily La Opinión in Los Angeles and the Chicago weekly La Raza argue in a common editorial that Alberto Gonzales should resign. ‘The firing of the U.S. attorneys is sufficient cause for doubting his capacity for distinguishing his loyalty to President George W. Bush from his duty to citizens,’ the editorial says. Another Spanish-language column in the Chicago paper Hoy:

Gonzales’ ascent was “a double triumph,” Muñoz wrote: “Not only was he was the first Latino attorney general, but he was the first Latino to occupy one of the four most important seats in the presidential cabinet.”

But with many in Congress calling for his resignation as a result of the U.S. attorney firings, the columnist added, “Latino leadership needs to join” in that demand. “Gonzales not only has let down the community — he’s let down the nation,” Muñoz…wrote.

    That’s it, isn’t it?

    Well stated, Mr Munoz.

Yea but, but those papers are biased, and the editorials were written by racists, and Clinton did it too.

“Diversity” is one word that is rarely associated with the conservative movement in general and the Republican Party in particular. But when it comes to efforts by minority Republicans Alberto Gonzales and Lurita Doan to convert their federal agencies into entrenched partisan redoubts of the GOP, the right has been very quick indeed to turn to the “diversity defense.”

    For the details, see:
“Gonzales, Doan and the Republican Diversity Defense.”

  10. Briseadh_na_faire says:

I’m glad to see La Raza finally come out on this, since they so strongly supported Gonzales for AG inspite of Gonzales’ support for torture.

I think this was a case of supporting Gonzales because he was Hispanic, not because he was qualified. In other words, yes, I do think their earlier support was racist. It is good to see La Raza look past race and to qualifications. May they continue to do so.

Clearly, Bush & Gonzo & their cadre of crooks have made this presidency like that of a corporate CEO – where everyone owes allegiance to the Jefe simply because he has the power to hire and fire. And, as we well know, it’s always the almighty “bottom line” with corporate mentality and their bottom line is to grab as much power as possible, trample our Constitution and Bill of Rights to tatters, and do so while laughing all the way to the bank and right in the citizens faces (who, BTW, pay for these nincompoops to be in office and work for us). I believe they’ve forgotten that one, simple and undeniable fact and that is that “they” serve at “the pleasure of the people”. The people are pulling the cork…..and the miasma of corruption and the stench of putrificiation is now permeating every pore of the Bush white house.

  14. veritas says:

He has let us hispanics down by sucking up to the rich boy to get ahead, instead of doing it by his own skills and abilities…damn shame. He used his poor childhood as an excuse to get help along the way, only to use his position to protect his benefactor and do his bidding rather than to do his job on behalf of the Constitution and the American people. He deserves to be impeached. Let his story of betrayal to his roots and to his oath of office and his well deserved shame be a warning to others who would get ahead by being subservient to those who used him for their own ends. Why could he not figure it out? My conclusion is that the guy is not that smart to begin with, and easily manipulated and controlled by those he wished to please. Now, Alberto, go. Shame. Shame.

  19. Jackie says:

So much for the race card defense. Now Al is really on his own. This is not a surprise as many Spanish people are a shame of Al’s conduct. He doesn’t represent the honesty of the Spanish people. It wouldn’t be so bad if Al’s knew what the job duties of an Attorney General are. Al let Karl Rove and Meirs run the show and now he’s stuck. He said he signed papers but didn’t know what he was signing. Bush appointed Al in the position to have the GOP get the Spanish vote. Al should choose his friends more careful. Bush just uses people and then stabs them in the back ask Libby.

  22. Marie says:

In a related story from TP Muckraker:

A Bush-nominated U.S. Attorney launches a corruption case during an election year that implicates the Democratic governor. He pushes the case, which targets an obscure state bureaucrat and obtains a conviction in June; she’s sentenced to 18 months in prison in late September. The case is featured prominently by Republicans in attack ads against the governor.
But when the case is appealed (after the election), the circuit court, in a remarkable reversal, rejects the conviction out of hand, saying that the evidence against the bureaucrat “is beyond thin.” Says one of the three circuit judges, “I’m not sure what your actual theory in this case is.”
Well, it happened — in Wisconsin. And the U.S. attorney in the case is Milwaukee’s Steven Biskupic, appointed by Bush in 2002. Somehow he’s been given the privilege of serving beyond his four year term.
    Is this a loyal Bushie?

  45. Angry One says:

Sadly for columnist Ruben Navarette, there is little empirical evidence to support his claim of a Latino backlash against Democrats for simply investigating the wrong-doing of an Attorney General who happens to be a Mexican-American.

The National Council of La Raza, which enthusiastically supported Gonzales’ nomination in 2005, has “not taken a public position on the firing controversy.” League of United Latin American Citizens, the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the Latino Coalition, and the National Hispanic Bar Association to date have all withheld public support for Gonzales in the face of the mounting evidence of his role in the U.S. attorneys controversy.

  49. david says:

It’s this “winner take all” attitude of the Neo-Con Republicans that makes them dangerous and divisive. Anyone who imagines that they can lord it over society if they get 51% of the vote will make the 49% very unhappy. Gonzales’s loyalty must be to 100% of the American people, not just to the Bush supporters. He can allow his political philosophy to inform his work, but, from the moment he begins to discriminate against half the population because they aren’t loyal to Bush, he has broken faith with the Constitution.

  50. FunMe says:

If you think about it, bush PURPOSELY chose minorities like Gonza and Lurita Lolita to dispel the notion that bush is racist.

But these are simply TOKENS to divert attention to the WORSE civil rights advancement during the bush crime family adminstration. Didn’t we discover recently that only 1 or 2 civil rights cases were accepted by minorities? The rest were by non-minorities?

The reality is that bush can no longer hide.

The end is near for all those freaks of nature!

And the sociopaths like bush, too!
