Report: Terrorists Following U.S. Home After Iraq Withdrawal Is ‘Remote At Best’

When it comes to Iraq, a common refrain from President Bush and other stay-the-coursers is that “if we were to leave before the job is done, the enemy would follow us here.” For example, on March 6, Bush said:

The extremists are fighting to take control of Iraq so they can establish it as a base from which to overthrow moderate governments in the region, and plan new attacks on the American people. If we fail in Iraq, the enemy will follow us home.

A new report from McClatchy debunks Bush’s claim. Here’s what the survey of military and diplomatic analysts found:

U.S. military, intelligence and diplomatic experts in Bush’s own government say the violence in Iraq is primarily a struggle for power between Shiite and Sunni Muslim Iraqis seeking to dominate their society, not a crusade by radical Sunni jihadists bent on carrying the battle to the United States.

Foreign-born jihadists are present in Iraq, but they’re believed to number only between 4 percent and 10 percent of the estimated 30,000 insurgent fighters – 1,200 to 3,000 terrorists – according to the Defense Intelligence Agency and a recent study by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a center-right research center.

“Attacks by terrorist groups account for only a fraction of insurgent violence,” said a February DIA report.

While acknowledging that terrorists could commit a catastrophic act on U.S. soil at any time – whether U.S. forces are in Iraq or not – the likelihood that enemy combatants from Iraq might follow departing U.S. forces back to the United States is remote at best, experts say.

One U.S. intelligence official quoted in the article points out that “the war in Iraq isn’t preventing terrorist attacks on America. If anything, that – along with the way we’ve been treating terrorist suspects – may be inspiring more Muslims to think of us as the enemy.”

So, the danger isn’t that leaving Iraq will bring more terrorism to the U.S., but that staying there will.

  5. slappy magoo says:

The sad heart of the matter is that it’s more or less inevitable that another terrorist attack will occur in American. Might not be al Queda. Hell, might not even be one a them Ay-rabs. But our country is so large, with so many disparate points of view, that there will eventually be more homeland terror, be it on a large or small scale. And when it happens, the GOP will be the first to jump on their chairs and say “ya see? YA SEE? This is because we didn’t finish the job ‘over there!’ Damn Clinton!” Just like you can count on the GOP to say “Here, where’s the global warming?” whenever the temperature drops below 50, so too will they assume any individual or group with an ax to grind and a bomb to throw is there because of whatever happened or didn’t happen in Iraq.

WHEN DOES YOUR UNIT LEAVE FOR IRAQ?

  8. Alejandro says:

I want a reporter to ask anyone who states this falsehood to explain how our troop presence in Iraq is stopping some random terrorist (or cell) from carrying out an attack in the US. Even if they came from Iraq, the Iraqi borders aren’t secure and neither are US borders. The occupation of Iraq has nothing to do with it and couldn’t stop it if it wanted to. The occupation of Iraq is, though, allowing the oil to flow unmetered.

The amazing and discouraging observation is the great number of people who buy this bull hook, line and sinker. It is dispiriting to say the least. They become irrational and violent if you suggest to them that the situation in world has become that much worse for the bungled US effort. The constant refrain is: “Bush is right, we have not been attacked since 9/11.” Why would they attack us here? We have done such a great job of dismantling our military, bankrupting our nation and turning world opinion against us.

  22. JMOHR says:

Actually, on second thought, the President has protected the US from another direct attack by Al Quaeda. Face it, another attack on our soil would cause the final collapse of that small support that Shrub’s war has in the US. Bin Laden knows that he must give Shrub the talking point that Al Quaeda is so tied down in Iraq that they could not spare twenty or thirty people to plan something for the US. Bin Laden knows that Shrub does far more damage to the US at this point than any operation that he could put together.

  24. veritas says:

This is hallmark “fear exploitation” by Bush….”fighting them over there so…..” How do you think that makes the innocent Iraqis caught in the crossfire of this Civil War and US “surge”. How inhumane and self-centered can one get? Does he really believe that this is anything but pathological thought process? Does he really believe that he can pull up the “fear card” again on the same people who watched him sit on his ass and read My Pet Goat while thousands died in the WTC?? This man has zero credibility and absolutely NO ONE is listening to any more lies coming from him or his henchmen.

Of course, the probability of this thought when connected to the Iraq War is inane at best; totally simplistic and idiotic at worst!

With our intentionally open and insecure borders, the probability of those borders being responsible for insurgents “fighting us over here” becomes much more credible a threat and an outstanding probability based on the sheer numbers of people illegally entering this country. For this fact alone, Bush should be impeached!

Then he has the nerve to attempt to connect the illegal Iraq War with an insurgency within this country?? More lies just like the inaccurate dots they attempted to connect between Saddam and 911.

This gang of thugs is totally washed up!

I love the way he throws around hackneyed phrases like “until the job is done” which is a totally vacuous statement with subtance and used to connote gross generality when nothing specific CAN be named.

Job? What job? Done? What is “done”? He’s never had a plan because there never was a real enemy (even Cheney admits to that) – without an enemy, there can be no war – just an american occupation of a sovereign country. So this “occupation” which has never had a plan now will not be “done” until something occurs. What, pray tell, is that illusive “something”?? I presume that in this game of mental masturbation between the twisted, inept administration and the people, the “job” will not be “done” until every last Iraqi is wiped out.

How can it be otherwise when we can’t even identify the “enemy” over there – except that they are Iraqis!!

He’s teetering around the 30% mark right now but soon to plummet to the 20’s at which time he will have to be impeached because, clearly, the american people no longer trust this president or support his presidency.

We’ve been so busy being offensive in this “war on terror” that we have a limited offense. The fact that we have a limited offense and have not been attacked since 9/11 on America soil doesn’t do much for the credibility of the neocon claim that they will follow us home.

Sharon – I’ve noticed that you are a spiritually evolved individual from your posts and I so appreciate reading what you have to say. I couldn’t agree more that the shedding of the blood of both the Iraqi civilians and our military qualifies, most definitely, as “war crimes” of this administration. Now we learn the truth that our worst nightmare is true: Doug Feith, PNAC, and the members of Bush’s Cabinet DID cook the books to trick us into this war which was based on bogus facts and manipulated evidence. We all suspected that, of course, but now knowing it means that we must do the next right thing – which is speedy impeachment of these monsters who defrauded us with their lies and spin. Everyone must realize that we may not have 2 more years before this democracy tanks completely so it is imperative that they be impeached now. We can’t afford the damage of 2 more years!

Also, when the entire truth becomes public through Kucinich’s new investigation into the contradictions between the “official story of 911″ and eyewitness testimonies, the people will take to the streets is disgust and dismay.

EVERY DOT IN THIS NIGHTMARE CONNECTS US BACK TO 911 WHICH IS THE STARTING POINT IN THIS CHICANERY, FOLKS.

I’m surprised that that weakness HASN’T been exploited. The fact that it hasn’t shows that the terrorizing fear of radical Muslims or any other boogeymen is absurd. Even 9/11 could have been prevented if Bush had either bothered to read the CIA (FBI?) report and accept it was possible, or had not seen it as his opportunity to invade Iraq.

In some ways, this bit of stimuli can be construed as a positive thing in that it begins to get the juices flowing; however, now we must corral this level of angst, disappointment, and anger and catalyze it by projecting it and channelling it properly upon those who deserve it. And, that would be the Bush Cabal. No angry american should waste this precious energy on dialoguing with disgusting hate-filled trolls because it merely allows their anger to grow exponentially which is not beneficial to anyone’s mind/body/soul. 87. Briseadh_na_faire says:

The flaw is in the premise.

In order for the logic of the “follow us home” argument to work, terrorists must be a centrally commanded organization whose entire efforts are expended in Iraq. There must be no other terrorist organization in the world, or, if other organizations do exist, they lack the capability of travel to the United States without the resources tied up in Iraq.

Let’s face it, if terrorists really wanted to do damage to the U.S. all they would have to do is hijack a few chorine tankers.

Of course, for those who believe that operatives within our own government were responsible for 9/11, the detonation of a few chlorine tankers around the U.S. prior to the ‘08 elections might cause enough panic to declare martial law…

I am pessimistic about this. Think military industrial complex, Blackwater’s 20,000 strong army and the young rumsfelds and cheneys that all have combined to form the American Al-qaeda thanks to the current bunch of goons in the administration.

  146. fubar says:

If memory serves, 9/11 happened BEFORE we went into Iraq. So they were already here and Bush Co. did nothing to stop them. They can’t follow us home when they are already here. Thanks to our unguarded borders. Bush was on vacation (the first of many) when he got the PDB “Bin Laden determined to attack inside the United States”. He ignored that warning and the FBI agent from AZ who was trying to get some attention with his concerns. No one listened. Osama who? Now the people in Iraq want to put back up the statue of Saddam. They miss the “good ole days”. I support our military and I know that they have been honorable in the call, but this president has abused them and his power. I am a marine vet and the mother of 2 children serving. My son was in Iraq last year and will leave again in the summer. Even he doesn’t know why we are there. The IP are dirty, the IA are retards. This is a civil war and the politicians over there need to get their act together so we can get our kids home. I have read that there are about 3500, plus or minus “cells” in this country that are being monitored. We are there, they are here. Don’t take rocket science. At least if we had to fight them here like the wing nut neocons are saying it would be on our terms. We don’t know who we are supposed to fight over there.

  147. Sean says:

Eh, I’m surprised nobody has mentioned Bush is using his old tactic of simplifying reality so as to justify his reasoning for continuing Operation Iraqi Freedom to the American people. His old statements such as “we’re going to stay the course” and “surging” 21,000 troops to “improve security” are surely as laughable as “the terrorists will follow us home”. Really now, if there was any terrorist state to go after, it would’ve been North Korea.

I honestly think Iraq will go down in history as America’s worst foreign policy blunder. I can’t speculate on what’s going through Bush’s mind. I don’t know if he’s just dumb, can’t face reality, or that over-masculine Texas attitude won’t let him back down until his term is over. All jokes aside, I think Bush and the Republican Party simply stand to loose way too much if Democrats get their way and force a withdrawal. Bush simply because he represents any number of big business ventures (including Halliburton and the big oil conglomerates) as their official pass for exploiting Iraq, and the Republican Party simply because they back him as a candidate for presidency (twice!!). So, please tell me how this just boils down a “liberal” versus “conservative” fight?

Liberals let too many illegal immigrants into the country, conservatives start pointless wars for economic gain. Take your pick if you look at the world that narrowly.

  148. valiant venus says:

Contrary to public opinion, the angst and “collective guilt of the Left” is beneficial to our country.

Leftists make excuses for all manner of criminals, social misfits and libertines,,,and expect perfection from the American government – run by people. Letists are generally willing to believe ANY opponent or enemy of the US and give that enemy EVERY benefit of the doubt. (Of course, in their misplaced zeal to appear “fair”, such benefit is NEVER accorded their own country.)

As I noted, the benefit of misguided Leftists is clear – they are examples to point to and say, “This person is an excellent example of why moral relativism ruins a society.”

  149. Sean says:

You have somewhat of a valid point, Valliant, but the Iraq War hardly falls along the lines of “left vs. right”. If it did, the world would be much simpler. That’s the problem with the Bush Administration, Bush tries to pawn the war off as a simple “us versus them” or “good versus evil” fight and it’s not that at all.

Frankly, as I said above, if you look at the world through black/white party lines, you could just as easily say “leftists let too many illegal immigrants in, conservatives start pointless wars.” And the US is not really a socialist nation, so you should ask yourself “what has the right done for me in conducting this war?” There hasn’t been a decrease in gas prices, despite Halliburton boating it out as fast as they can, taxes haven’t gone down, among other things half the world things the US is a villainous nation. So again, what has Bush and his Republican Right done good for the country.

I’m saying the “right” is bad at all, but if you’re going to directly compare them to the left, it was the right has gotten the country into more trouble and wars.

Bulls@it. The President has said the terrorists will follow him home. He is basing that on fact. You gonna call the leader of the free world a liar?

    You guys are laughable.

What evidence do you have that he is basing this on fact??? In fact, if he has facts to back this up, why has he NEVER explained them???

YOU are an idiot if you think that, just because this MAN (not GOD) happens to be President that he isn’t capable of lying or at least stretching the facts to suit his needs.

You should listen and respond to the experts quoted in the article, rather than responding to those making comments on the article. Because the experts say that Bush is NOT CORRECT when he makes this ridiculous statement over and over again – which he just made again this morning!!!

Not only are there NO FACTS to support this ridiculous contention, but Bush’s position actually defies logic. In fact, when the 911 attacks took place, we were NOT in Iraq. So how do you and Bush explain that? Additionally, I would imagine that it would be virtually impossible for the U.S. to turn into some sort of terrorist battleground like Iraq. In fact, from what I can tell, we seem to be catching and stopping any and every terrorist plot that gets planned these days.

No. This is nothing more or less than POLITICAL TERRORISM. Bush is basically trying to SCARE the American people into doing what he wants. For whatever reason, he is totally invested in this war and he obviously thinks everyone else should be as well.

BTW, the current situation with a “nuclear Iran” makes another great point about the START of the war in Iraq:

It has always been my position that, if we REALLY believed that Hussein had WMD’s, we would certainly never have attacked. Indeed, if he had such weapons, why did he not immediately use them to repeal the U.S. invasion?

I believe that the reason we are not looking at military options in Iran is for this very reason: I think we KNOW that Iran has such weapons and, as such, would USE them, if attacked – something the U.S. does not want any part of.

If this is true, I think the fact that we even invaded Iraq PROVES that we KNEW there were no WMD there. As such, the entire war IS illegitimate. And, since the original reason for the war was invalid, Bush naturally has to come up with something else. And it’s so obvious what he’s doing:

He’s basically trying to hypnotize and brainwash the American people: He believes that, if he says this over and over again, people will start to believe him.

And you are the perfect proof that he has a point. You have no logical reason to believe this man and yet you do. That is the classic definition of “brainwashing”: to hold the opinion of another without critically examining or coming to the opinion on one’s own.

    Good luck, Lemming!
