McCain: It’s ‘Fun’ When I ‘Misspeak’ About Progress In Iraq»

In a recent TV interview, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) criticized CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, saying he didn’t know what was going on in Iraq. As proof of progress, McCain claimed, “General Petraeus goes out there almost every day in an unarmed humvee.” Tonight in a 60 Minutes interview, McCain acknowledged that statement was a lie. He said “there is no unarmored humvees. Obviously, that’s the case.” He excused himself, saying, “I’m trying to make the point over and over and over again that we are making progress.”

McCain also previously claimed that there are neighborhoods that you can walk around freely, claiming his heavily-armed stroll through a Baghdad market was an example. Tonight, McCain said he can “understand why they would provide me with that security.”

“Of course I’m gonna misspeak,” McCain said. “I’ve done it on numerous occasions. And I probably will in the future. I regret that when I divert attention to something that I’ve said from my message. But that’s just life. And I’m happy, frankly, with the way I operate. Otherwise it’d be a lot less fun.” Watch the segment:

60 Minutes host Scott Pelley noted that McCain had been a fierce critic of Donald Rumsfeld but seems to “give President Bush a pass.” McCain responded, “I say that he is responsible and I will continue to say that he is responsible. Should I look back in anger? Or should I look forward?”

McCain harbors no anger because he has been an early cheerleader of ill-conceived Iraq war and remains one today.

Perhaps McCain should speak to the family and loved ones of the American soldiers killed today in Iraq. I’m certain they would appreciate his humor and enjoy the “fun” he’s having.

Hahaha. He’s still lying. He didn’t mispeak. There was no mistaken miscommunication.

He said what he said. He got called on it. And then he flew to Iraq to try to prove his case. Instead he ended up disproving his case. If he had misspoken, he would have noticed it before he flew to Iraq and made a fool out of himself.

John McCain, Republican liar. Just like all the rest. No straight talk. No maverick. Just another lying sack of shit Republican politician.

Some of us were never fooled for a second.

ABC has a nice article out describing Bushs total (or voluntary?) ineptitude in Iraq. His total “hasardeur” approach led to little more than total chaos.
Bushs actions in Iraq served hardly any constitution. Especially not the one of Iraq.

What followed was the “rank amateurism and swaggering arrogance” of the occupation, under L. Paul Bremer’s Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA), which took big steps with little consultation with Iraqis, steps Allawi and many others see as blunders:

The Americans disbanded Iraq’s army, which Allawi said could have helped quell a rising insurgency in 2003. Instead, hundreds of thousands of demobilized, angry men became a recruiting pool for the resistance.

Purging tens of thousands of members of toppled President Saddam Hussein’s Baath party from government, school faculties and elsewhere left Iraq short on experienced hands at a crucial time.

An order consolidating decentralized bank accounts at the Finance Ministry bogged down operations of Iraq’s many state-owned enterprises.

The media is pushing the lies about Iraq while Al Sadr is taking control. Al Sadr has got the support of the Middle East leaders and Bush appointee Maliki is pushed out. Notice the press isn’t talking about the Saudi Kings comment that he wants the US out of Iraq.

John McCain: Well again, I disagree with what the majority of the American people want.

You haven’t replied to my post. What you said against my post is an evasion of the challenge I made against you. It’s also an example of a (futile) attempt to try to change the subject. McCain’s own words convicted him.

By the way, I’m a professor of philosophy and am well versed in ethical theory, especially issues about relativism. I’m not a relativist, but rather a Kantian, which means the complete rejection of moral relativism.

    Interesting Easter story:

Last Easter, at the lovely Clearwater Hills Estates in Paradise Valley Arizona. It was on a county island, and in the desert mountains. The inlaws hosted a lovely brunch. The children were dressed nicely and hunting for eggs. The nice cat they have, wanted to offer her Easter gifts. And arrived with a dead baby bunny in its mouth. We of course tried to put a stop to that business and quickly disposed of the cute little dead bunny. The cat then came back with a second cute dead little bunny. It was horrific. I processed the trauma this year, with my son. He said he picked up one and thought it was a chew toy before he realised it was real.

This year no dead baby bunnies. I did see one adult live one, and some quail running around. The cat was still annoying.

  61. Briseadh_na_faire Says:

Regarding the impeachment resolutions in the various states: none have gotten as far as being sent to the House of Representatives. I did a bit of research into the Jefferson Manual and was motivated to send this message to Kucinich:

I’ve been following your campaign because you are the only one taking a principled stand on the issues.

I would like to encourage you to go one bold step further: introduce impeachment charges against Bush, Cheney and Gonzales.

According to the Jefferson Manual, such charges, when introduced on the House floor by a member, become a matter of high privilege, taking precedence over all other business:

§ 603. Inception of impeachment proceedings in the House.

    In the House there are various methods of setting an impeachment in motion: by charges made on the floor on the responsibility of a Member or Delegate (II, 1303; III, 2342, 2400, 2469; VI, 525, 526, 528, 535, 536);

§ 604. A proposition to impeach a question of privilege.

A direct proposition to impeach is a question of high privilege in the House and at once supersedes business otherwise in order under the rules governing the order of business (III, 2045–2048, 2051, 2398; VI, 468, 469; July 22, 1986, p. 17294; Aug. 3, 1988, p. 20206; May 10, 1989, p. 8814; Sept. 23, 1998, pp. 21560–62; see Deschler, ch. 14, § 8). It may not even be superseded by an election case, which is also a matter of high privilege (III, 2581). It does not lose its privilege from the fact that a similar proposition has been made at a previous time during the same session of Congress (III, 2408), previous action of the House not affecting it (III, 2053).

If you wish, I offer my services to help with this matter.

Perhaps if enough of us encouraged him, he just might do it.

One thing is certain, if Kucinich did introduce such charges on the House floor, it would be the political equivalent of the 2004 tsunami.

I am pleased to make your acquaintance. It has been a while since I’ve had the opportunity to discuss Kantian Metaphysics. And, since last I read Kant, I’ve studied shamanism a bit.

So I have a question for you, if you don’t mind. Given the Kant position on Transcendental Idealism:

With Kant’s claim that the mind of the knower makes an active contribution to experience of objects before us, we are in a better position to understand transcendental idealism. Kant’s arguments are designed to show the limitations of our knowledge. The Rationalists believed that we could possess metaphysical knowledge about God, souls, substance, and so; they believed such knowledge was transcendentally real. Kant argues, however, that we cannot have knowledge of the realm beyond the empirical. That is, transcendental knowledge is ideal, not real, for minds like ours.

How can that be squared with the commonality of experiences of shamans from different cultures?

  70. Zep Tepi Says:

(I’ve learned my lesson now.) I don’t know anything about either of these individuals, but they seem incapable of even a basic degree of understanding, perhaps because of emotional immaturity or educational inadequacy. 74. Mark Colby Says:

    Hello Briseadh_na_faire,

I’ve noted the intellectual sophistication of your posts, and I salute you as well. To briefly answer your question, the Kantian view would be that the commonality of experience of shamans (or any other human beings) from different cultures and time periods is due to the uniformity of the human mind across cultures or history. (This is one of Kant’s fundamental assumptions.) No human mind, whatever the cuture or historical period, can hope to transcend the limits of sensory experience.

To be polite to other readers of TP, I don’t want to hijack this thread. I’d be pleased to expand on Kant with you by private e-mail. Just do a search at the Columbia University website for me and my e-mail address will show up. (I’m assuming that this post doesn’t violate the TP rules.)

Kant’s arguments are designed to show the limitations of our knowledge.
    Heh.

I find this argument flawed. Knowledge is what we read ansd study, but not what is contained in our unused DNA. Kant seems to look for knowledge in past written works, when in fact that knowledge lies within and is not written.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein called Sunday for Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to resign over the firings of eight U.S. attorneys, saying he’d lost her confidence and hadn’t told her the truth.

Feinstein, D-Calif. and a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, had held off on calling for Gonzales to step down even as many leading Democrats and some Republicans did so in recent weeks.

“I believe he should step down. And I don’t like saying this. This is not my natural personality at all,” Feinstein said on Fox News Sunday. “But I think the nation is not well served by this. I think we need to get at the bottom of why these resignations were made, who ordered them, and what the strategy was.”

(This is one of Kant’s fundamental assumptions.) No human mind, whatever the cuture or historical period, can hope to transcend the limits of sensory experience.

  98. Mark Colby Says:

    Zep Tepi,

I don’t think it’s a matter of anyone being “hard headed,” as you put it, but rather that anyone is capable of being mistaken and not even realize it. This is one of the reasons why it takes someone like a Kant to show the limits of what’s possible for human beings to know. Those limits might not be clear to anyone without deep, systematic, specialized study.

  110. Mark Colby Says:

    Zep,

The question you asked in #98 is relevant also to people like Jake and Valiant Venus, namely, what does someone else know that I’m not in a position to know? For example, I teach critical thinking, so I know what the rules of valid reasoning are and the hundreds of ways in which people violate those rules. (For example, Valiant Venus violated one by trying to change the subject.) How can I teach Valiant Venus what he or she doesn’t know and doesn’t realize that he or she doesn’t know, so that our political disagreements can be more worthwhile? The answer is: I can’t. Valiant Venus would have to take a course in critical thinking and also have enough intellectual and emotional maturity to be willing to learn how to reason better. To connect this to your question about Kant, what he claims to know is that there are absolute limits to knowledge. But in order to understand what this means, you’d have to take a course in philosophy. Unfortunately, in the end it all comes down to people’s differences in education, temperament, and intellectual and emotional maturity. When those differences are too great, such as between me and Jake or Valiant Venus, there can be very little worthwhile discussion.

Zep, the professor is for real. I’ve studied some kantian philosophy and would object to it being called mental masturbation. It is merely one path among many, each seeking to determine the truth about the nature of the Universe.

I, for example, am still trying to understand the nature and scope of shamanic journeying and healing. To that end, I am curious about your claim of accessing unused DNA. And I am also interested in the Professor’s understanding of metaphysics.

I guess what I’m asking is that you be … tolerant, if that’s the right word, of philosophers. And I’m asking this because I value your posts and your insight. I’ve never seen you go off on someone like Prof. Colby before. After all, he’s on our side, you know.
