In the Bush administration's Orwellian version of reality, the increased death toll will be extolled as a sign of progress, and as evidence that the surge is getting the strategy back on track.

Kay @ 5 -- you are so right, because it's indisputable that the plan is actually to increase troop levels indeterminately and to keep them there indefinitely. My reasoning that it's as plain as the ass on Bush's face is this:

They argue against having a public timeline because they claim it will "inform the enemy" of when we're leaving so they just can lay back in hiding until we do. The gaping hole in that particular bit of what the right wing considers logic is that that's precisely what they're doing now.

The question is, how long will these people hold a grudge against each other? I mean, let's say we had a "secret plan" to pull out troops in February 2008 and we do it. Surprise! We're outta here! Is that a long enough time having repressed the violence to be assured that we won't leave a full-on war in our wake? OK, maybe not. How about February 2018?

Considering these people have been at each other since the middle ages, that's most assuredly not enough either. No, this has been a prescription all along for the permanent occupation of Iraq -- permanent that is until we've sucked them dry of everything we desire, that is.

Posession is nine-tenths of the law, and that goddamn oil is OURS. Well, not yours and mine, but Exxon/Mobil and Chevron's, who will gleefully sell the spoils of a war that we (not they) payed for back to us, continuing year-over-year record profits as far into the future as we can imagine.

Pretty nice racket, eh? Now, consider that a major-league spike in oil prices is only one border crossing away from where our troops are now positioned.

We are not stopping Iraq from sinking into anarchy: it is anarchy now. It will be anarchy in two, five, or ten years. Nothing we do now, in two, five or ten years from now will change that, no matter how many troops die over there. Bring our troops home now!

Yeah, seriously, on what planet do the two battles of Falluja not count as "major combat operations?"

Don't worry, lance corporal, at least your leg wasn't blown off in major combat operations.

We need to rephrase:

...U.S. casualties since the beginning of the escalation have been “running at 3.14/day, which is the highest of any period since 'Mission Accomplished'”

All anyone has to do is read a little history on Vietnam to know once we started increasing troops, the death rates increased as well.

But when the only two books Dubya has read is My Pet Goat, and Being a Christian for Dummies, what can we expect.
