Today President Bush toured a section of U.S.-Mexico border near Yuma Arizona. He took the opportunity to tout his guest worker initiative and to hail the Border Patrol’s “amazing progress” in “deterring people from attempting illegal border crossings.”
He cited a decrease in illegal immigrant apprehensions as evidence of their recent successes. “When you apprehended fewer people, that means fewer were trying to come across,” Bush said. “And fewer were trying to come across because we’re deterring people from attempting illegal border crossings in the first place.” Watch it:
But just over 18 months ago, Bush cited a 42-percent increase in apprehensions as one of the Border Patrol’s “best examples of success“:
Our actions to integrate manpower, technology and infrastructure are getting results. And one of the best examples of success is the Arizona Border Control Initiative, which the government launched in 2004. In the first year of this initiative — now, listen to this, listen how hard these people are working here — agents in Arizona apprehended nearly 500,000 illegal immigrants, a 42-percent increase over the previous year.
Bush’s new view of apprehensions comes with a new, more hard-line conservative approach to immigration “devised after weeks of closed-door meetings with Republican senators.”
Transcript:
[A] month before Operation Jump Start, an average of more than 400 people a day were apprehended trying to cross here. The number has dropped to fewer than 140 a day.
In other words, one way that the Border Patrol can tell whether or not we’re making progress is the number of apprehensions.
When you apprehended fewer people, that means fewer were trying to come across. And fewer were trying to come across because we’re deterring people from attempting illegal border crossings in the first place.

“Devised after weeks of closed-door meetings with Republican senators.†What a flesh-crawling prospect.

April 9th, 2007 at 5:05 pmDoesn’t this mean that all we have to do to stop illegal immigration is to dissolve the Border Patrol?
If there are no patrolmen to make any arrests, there won’t be any arrests, and if there aren’t any arrests, that clearly means that there are no longer any illegal immigrants coming in, right? :-P
April 9th, 2007 at 5:09 pmIts Chimpyspeak.

When they catch fewer illegals its a great success.

Did anyone see Bush flip-flop with regards to examples of success on border patrol? See Bush lovers, this Admin is continually in the spin cycle.
Oh damn, that’s what this thread is about!
Flip-flop
Flippity-floppity
That Rove character really hit on a good phrase with Flip-Flop.
A smart person changes their mind, or Flips or Flops if you prefer, when confronted with new facts. Anyone can change their mind and really should given new facts.
Now, if you change your mind, or Flip or Flop if you prefer, but use no new facts or give no new facts for changing your mind, then you are either lying for propaganda reasons or just a dumb ass.
In this case, Bush isn’t flipping or flopping (well he is flopping around like a dieing fish but that’s another matter), he is just pretending that whatever he says based on whatever statistic he is given, that the border patrol is a success. I have no idea which stat means it’s a success, more apprehensions or less apprehensions. Bush believes he is right no matter which is says is better. If you said this to a psychologist, you just might find yourself in an institution!
April 9th, 2007 at 5:33 pmThat’s hilarious Tobey… thank you!
April 9th, 2007 at 5:34 pmRyan, you poor thing! The concept must be confusing for a “bright” guy like yourself - so R-E-A-D the following VERY slowly. (Then your attempt to politically shang-hai GWB won’t make you look so foolish…) From the San Diego trenches - HERE is how it works:
When a particular section of the US border is being swarmed with illegal aliens, the Border Patrol shifts resources (i.e border agents, aircraft, etc.) and concentrate on a sector. When the word gets out, fewer people try to cross at that point, making fewer apprehensions a SIGN that certain sector work IS WORKING. NOW we need to concentrate our efforts in similar fashion along the remainder of the border. I’m sorry the concept and operation of the program confused you so easily.
April 9th, 2007 at 5:35 pmwe don’t have an illegal immigration problem
so much as an illegal EMPLOYER problem…
just sayin’…
April 9th, 2007 at 5:36 pmBush couldn’t find his way out of a kitty litter box let alone complete a math course. Logic long ago lost.
April 9th, 2007 at 5:39 pmI only hire the company to clean my yard, if they hire the illegals it isn’t my problem. I certainly don’t want to have to pay a decent price to have my yard cleaned.
April 9th, 2007 at 5:39 pmTruth is, that Bush believes that whatever decision he makes is fated to be successful, no matter what the facts or reality on the ground is. He creates his own reality (in his own mind), and he creates a construct to then support that reality. In clinical terms, it’s usually called paranoid schizophrenia. He’s got at least one very strong counselor (probably Rove) that helps enable his illness.
This is from an article written by Ron Suskind in october, 2004.
In the summer of 2002, after I had written an article in Esquire that the White House didn’t like about Bush’s former communications director, Karen Hughes, I had a meeting with a senior adviser to Bush. He expressed the White House’s displeasure, and then he told me something that at the time I didn’t fully comprehend — but which I now believe gets to the very heart of the Bush presidency.
The aide said that guys like me were ”in what we call the reality-based community,” which he defined as people who ”believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality.” I nodded and murmured something about enlightenment principles and empiricism. He cut me off. ”That’s not the way the world really works anymore,” he continued. ”We’re an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you’re studying that reality — judiciously, as you will — we’ll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that’s how things will sort out. We’re history’s actors . . . and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.”

The Bush “hard line” plan is probably conceived of as a bargaining chip against the House plan. Of course, in both plans, American citizens lose.
Visitors to this site might want to review the LooseBorder policies favored by both the Dems and the GOP, trying to figure out whether they should support either side in this matter.

April 9th, 2007 at 6:05 pmThe rate and numbers of apprehension are totally of no value in determining the value of any immigration program. The repeat rate of reentry and prosecution and penalty rate of those apprehended is all that matters. The rate under Bushco is just a little over zero (maybe 5% at best). For over sixty years the INS has been rounding up the invaders and shipping them back only to repeat the process as many as two or three times a week until the invader is successful. This information I learned directly from the INS in the early 1950’s. I will not argue the moral aspects of our immigration policy, program, or problem but I will state my opinion on the legal aspects of the problem. If it is illegal to enter this Country except under those conditions imposed by law then any individual who enters should be treated as a hostile enemy invader. Again, take up your moral issues with those that wrote and enacted the law. That invader should be shot upon sight or arrested and deported–the first time. The second time there is no alternative and there will be no third. Plain, simple, straight forward, no chance for misunderstanding or photo-ops. My point is that an immigration policy for the Country should be established and followed and there will be no need for burros (since he is in Arizona) like King George the Dumb to run around the Country spouting how great and good he is while stealing us blind with the other side of his mouth. Let Congress and the States establish the policy through the standard democratic procedure, direct AND FUND the INS and DOJ to do their job as prescribed in the law. Then we citizens can live in peace under a Democratic Administration without fear of the illegals stealing what the bushco overlooked. AMEN!

You could be right or you could be wrong and that’s the problem with what you and he are saying.
April 9th, 2007 at 6:15 pmThis president is the quintessential “war on the american people” or is it more like “plague on the american people” or “pariah of the american people”?? Take your pick; they all apply to the Chimp.
April 9th, 2007 at 6:25 pm#33 It matters little what the dems or rethugs think or come up with in terms of an immigration plan. The sad fact, that you Rethugs find so hard to accept, is that Bush and YOUR administration of steal & conceal, lie & coverup has totally botched absolutely EVERYTHING possible. It’s all coming apart at the seams and the scandals and attempted coverups are reaching epidemic proportions. I cannot find one thing this administration or the Republican Party has done right - can anyone????
April 9th, 2007 at 6:27 pmThis is just another attempt by Bush and his cadre of liars to try to obscure the derelection of duty for the past 6 years in making this country TOTALL INSECURE and less safe because of it’s wide open borders. He can throw any numbers to the wall and hope they will stick but they have absolutely no relevancy to anything but the fact that he and his administration, once again, have betrayed the trust of the american people in allowing terrorists to waltz right in.
If I were him, I certainly wouldn’t be calling attention to his 6 year derelection of duty in not dealing with illegal immigration and how it is straining our system (hospitals closing, not paying taxes, etc.). His focus on one more thing he’s totally botched will only add more fuel to the funeral pyre of the GOP.
Actually, his own party needs to muzzle him because he has and will continue to do infinite harm to any candidate running in 08. I’d say to those Rethugs considering it: Don’t bother to waste your money. It’s over for you and your party for a very, very long time.
April 9th, 2007 at 6:31 pmThe problem with illegal immigration is that, at the core, poverty exists all over the world, and it is especially prominent in South America. Building a wall or arresting people for attempting to cross the border will not dispel the fact that the prospect of escaping poverty supercedes the consequences. I think the misconception in America is that “they” are stealing our jobs and resources, when in fact, they work jobs that the man who claims his job is stolen won’t even consider working. Why do you think Bush has this visitor program? Because our economy needs illegal immigrants to give you your 99cent hamburger!
The problem isn’t the illegal immigration, it’s the extreme poverty that people live in. If our government really wanted to halt illegal immigration, it would spend money on helping lesser-developed nations grow economically. Supporting the UN Millennium Development Goals to end poverty would a great step to take, rather than funneling money into inefficient border patrol. According to the Borgen Project, just $19 billion annually would end starvation. Put into perspective, we have a $522 billion military budget. I may be socially liberal, but I am conservative when it comes to the economy and spending…the Millennium Goals would be a better place to invest the money than endless war.
April 9th, 2007 at 6:32 pmThe trouble is that the number of apprehensions isn’t an indicator of the number of attempts. We could have decreased patrols of the border, and that also would have lead to a decrease in apprehensions. Would that have been a success, too? So to call it a success presupposes that the policy worked in the first place.
What’s needed is an estimate of the number of illegal crossings (the ones that don’t get apprehended). Otherwise, it’s like saying the murder rate went down because fewer people were arrested for murder.
Does anyone think that arresting them is a deterrent? Sure, it might deter an individual from trying again (because they’ve run out of money to pay their smuggler), but will it deter someone else?
April 9th, 2007 at 6:39 pmBlack is white, up is down, that’s Bush speak. You can almost always know that the truth is pretty much the opposite of whatever comes out of his mouth. If we want to solve the illegal immigration program, all we need to do is to arrest the employers who are knowingly hiring illegals. The problem is that they would then go out of business because one of the reasons why they hire illegals is that they can’t find any American to do the dirty jobs they hire the illegals to do. We are much too spoiled to do most of the jobs the illegals do. But, if the Republics are truly concerned about all those illegal aliens in this country, shut down the employers who are giving them the jobs. If there were no jobs, they wouldn’t come here. The only reason why most come here is to earn a living so that they can support their family back home. Ninety nine percent of the illegals are hard working, law abiding people who just want to provide food and shelter for their families. Kind of like us. The difference is that they are willing to work much harder and for less money than we are.
April 9th, 2007 at 6:45 pmYah, I’m a liberal and a Democrat. I would like for some liberal who’s in favor of illegal entry to explain why it’s a good thing for the United States to have millions of people entering the country, stealing legal citizens’ identities, and using all of our social services, which the American middle class (already hurting) has to fund. Could someone explain that to me?
April 9th, 2007 at 6:46 pmOff Thread but interesting: HookerGate is beginning with Deborah Jeane Palfrey spilling her guts about her “fantasy services” to Big Wigs in DC. HookerGate is here!

April 9th, 2007 at 6:50 pmSmoke, meet mirrors.
April 9th, 2007 at 6:52 pm#47 You didn’t mention that these “illegals” pay no income taxes because they don’t have a legal social security number. So what’s up with that….you and I pay taxes yet they don’t have to?? You and I have to pay for medical insurance and they clog up our ER’s and don’t pay a dime - ultimately resulting in these Texas ER’s closing?? It’s time for us to put our foot down and, if we grant them amnesty because of Bush’s “derelection of duty in upholding our immigration laws” then all “legal immigrants” need to be reimbursed immediately for all the money and time (not to mention the stress of jumping through bureaucratic hoops) to make things fair. Otherwise, it’s NO DEAL!
April 9th, 2007 at 6:53 pmLet’s face the facts though: Allowing the illegal entry of those workers who will work for less than the minimum wage was “Bush’s Grand Scheme” to suck up to the corporations who OWN HIM! He’s totally run by corporations (fascism) and has taken so much personal dinero from them that they would blackmail him in a heartbeat. However, what is this really illustrative of? It means that this country’s economy is only being propped up by illegal aliens. It means that, without them, the City of New York, for one, would be out of business if they were deported. It means that this country, which is already crippled perhaps beyond repair, would totally collapse. Now….who shall the people hold accountable and fully responsible for allowing us to get into this predicament?? You got it: the one and only….the “decider”, George D (Dumbko) Bush.

April 9th, 2007 at 6:56 pmIf our “legal immigrants” had to jump through the hoops, so do the illegals. If not, it’s unfair and legal immigrants need to be promptly reimbursed, in full, and with interest.

April 9th, 2007 at 7:35 pmThe problems on this thread have resolved themselves to two salient points: (1) The invaders are here to work at any wage to get the job. (2) They are taking jobs people here won’t do. Let us add one more salient point to the equation: There are people in this Country that don’t want to work and would rather draw subsistence from the Government.
The Solution: (1) Identify the jobs meeting the requirements of the above paragraph (A). (2) Identify the available unemployed workers (B). (3) Identify the potential illegal invaders (C). (4) Offer the first available job (A) to the first (B). (5) If the job is refused by (B) continue through the list of (B)’s until the job is filled. If the job is not filled by a (B) then offer the job to the first (C). (6) If (C) accepts the job, repeat the process for all (A)’s. Deport all (B)’s that refuse an (A) to the Country from which came the appropriate (B) and remove them from the unemployed and/or welfare rolls. For all (A)’s not filled rewrite the job description, and/or raise the wage, and repeat the process until everybody is working, there is no unemployment and welfare and there is no illegal immigration. (Economy 101)
The moral of the story: When politicians are involved the result will be freaked up.
Just remember: Any generalization is not worth a damn, including this one.

April 9th, 2007 at 9:45 pmPrezident Bush says:
When you apprehended fewer people, that means fewer were trying to come across. And fewer were trying to come across because we’re deterring people from attempting illegal border crossings in the first place.
Tucson Daily Star Says:
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 04.09.2007
BISBEE — After nearly two years of declining numbers, illegal border-crossings took a sudden jump last month in Cochise County, law enforcement officials said.
Gustavo Soto, a spokesman for the Border Patrol’s Tucson Sector, said agents at the Naco, Douglas and Willcox stations captured more than 13,000 illegal immigrants last month, a 30 percent increase from March 2006. Before the spike, Border Patrol apprehensions in the county were down 13 percent since Oct. 1. That decline followed a 45 percent drop during the previous year.
Sgt. Taron Maddux, spokes-man for the Bisbee Police Department, also noted a recent spike in local border crossings.
“From Jan. 1 up until about three weeks ago, we had apprehended a total of maybe 100 to 150 (illegal immigrants),” Maddux said. “And then, in a two-week period, we apprehended something like 255.”
So, it looks like deterrence isn’t working everywhere in Arizona.

The topic I would like to see discussed is the topic of the thread. Any thread, all threads.
Case in point:
“How are we going to get Mexico to pay an honest wage when we
won’t?”
“Why should we pay an honest wage to an dishonest citizen?”
“I thought you didn’t love our esteemed (one you forgot) A**HOLE!”
Two rhetorical questions that have no answer and one sarcastic one-liner that serve no useful purpose in the discussion of the topic. No one here wants to engage in anything but “one-up-manship.” It should be the primary purpose of all dedicated proponents of the basic premise of this site to further the aims of the site. Namely: impeach Bush and Cheney. Levity is fine, sarcasm is fine, profanity to make a point is fine, argument is fine, stubborness, to a point, is fine, stupidity is not. Lets be civil. There is no need for a pissing contest when we all share the same bucket.
April 9th, 2007 at 9:55 pmI am all for impeachment but if you think that is the primary purpose of this site, you need a reality check. Impeachment is not going to happen. Even if it weren’t “off the table” it wouldn’t pass. We are stuck with Bush for the duration. Also, civility is overrated.

I BELIEVE THAT UNDER http://WWW.BUSHWATCH.COM/LIES OR http://WWW.BUSHLIES.COM OR WHATEVER
my understanding there have SO many lies, so much twisting the truth, the truth doesn’t matter anymore
take example for all the wonderful services we all desperately need… okay i’ll agree WE GET HALF and YOU GET HALF… there are SO MANY taxes, it’s easily 50%
YET… you dog gone can’t get the services. why? jeez i wonder why and if you state that…. the response from a rigged system…. it doesn’t matter, yet we pay for service we dog gone can’t get.
yet trusty phone and ask for a bribe for an election and guess what? dracula comes in, twists arm and superfunds “funds” disappear into
somebody’s pocket
THERE IS SO MUCH CORRUPTION WITHIN THIS SYSTEM AND I FIND IT ABSOLUTELY AMAZING AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF JUSTICE AND ACCORDING TO CREW THERE ARE WELL OVER 25 TOTALLY CORRUPTED CONGRESS/SENATE AND WELL OVER 25 TOTALLY CORRUPTED IN THE WHITE HOUSE.
which reminds me, one of those white house public servants made it a habit to hit walmart…. right by somethin, take it out to his car, return back to the store, load up his cart and take his receipt and that item to customer service to get a refund…… what a faithful public servant.
dude…
you going to trust birds like that to handle billions in defense or health or in fact anything when there is little oversight, just like the bricks of $100 sent to iraq
right immigration…. in just 60 days, us truckers will begin getting outsourced….. immigration is totally corrupted, but so is defense health
care or all the 1000’s of wonderful services we all supposely get until
the hoodlums raid social security and leave a bunch of empty IOU’S

BILLIONS UPON BILLIONS IN ARM TWISTING DRACULA PARTIES, DOIN EACH OTHER FAVORS AND ALL THESE DOG GONE EAR MARS. SOUNDS TO ME LIKE BRIBERY, SWINDLERS, AND HOODLUMS…….. NOT SOME GOD APPOINTED TRUSTY PUBLIC SERVANT FULL OF INTEGRITY/TRUTH, THERE AINT NO TRUTH BY THE TIME THEIR ETHICS SURFACE, IT’S A DOG GONE LIE
So catching less illegal aliens is good, even as republicans claim that Carol Lam was fired for not catching enough illegal aliens. Got it.
April 9th, 2007 at 11:58 pmWill TP please implement some sort of login function so that we can filter the troll comments. Instead of ignoring them, I would rather have maybe an X button next to everyone’s name so that I can block them in the future. That way, they are free to post and my browser isn’t filled up with garbage.

Why aren’t you over in Iraq defending our great country? Instead, you just waste your time doing nothing but collect food stamps. Now go sign up and do something for your great leader and country.
April 10th, 2007 at 12:18 am#86 Excuse me, Brutey? You are the one who loves the Iraq war. Why aren’t you there you pathetic little pussy?
April 10th, 2007 at 12:36 am#86 Oh, by the way, retard, I don’t even know what a food stamp looks like, troll boy. But you wouldn’t understand someone that doesn’t have the same experiences than you, would you, Corky?

April 10th, 2007 at 8:21 amGO HOME ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
May 1st, 2007 at 5:23 pmIllegal immigrants cause nothing but trouble in America.
May 1st, 2007 at 5:25 pmIllegal immigrants only cause trouble in America.
May 1st, 2007 at 5:26 pmFewer apprehensions could simply mean that the President has reigned in the border patrol. He had Attorney General Gonzalez put Ramos and Campeon in prison for shooting an undocumented drug trafficker. If I was a border patrol agent I think I would be very careful as to how well I did my job with this president. His statement in my opinion was a complete distortion of reality.
May 30th, 2007 at 1:57 amBush and a substantial contingent in the government democrat and republican want to pay back there contributors and are willing to sell out America to do it.
